La Pedrera & Park Güell :: What to do in Barcelona #4 - Duration: 5:44.

Hello! Today we are on the terrace of La Pedrera, or as it is originally named: Casa Milá

It is one of the houses built by Gaudí, or rather it is an apartments building

Its construction was order by the Milá family

For them to live here and rent the other apartments and thus live on rent

At the moment, we are at the terrace, which is super cool

Its bottle tips and hulls above the fireplaces, it's very pretty

Yes, it's crazy, some very original designs, the sky is super blue ...

We just left La Pedrera or Casa Milà. What do you think about it?

I liked it, it is very different from Casa Battló

We recommend that you come to both

If you can't, then investigate a little to see which one is more to your liking

To me, I think I liked the other one more, the Casa Batlló

However they are very different, what happens is that these are more apartments

So you can imagine how life was back then

It's very nice as well, it has the curves, it does not have as much color as the Casa Battló

But it's worth to pay a visit

It's the common name that people gave to the building, because they said it looked like a stone quarry

At the time it was a little...they did not like it that much...

It was something very revolutionary, very controversial for the time

We are in one of the most representative places of Barcelona

The weather is not helping us, it is raining, it has rained all day, it has not stopped

It is a light but steady rain

But, this place is spectacular, you can not miss it when you visit Barcelona

It is one of the masterpieces of Antoni Gaudí

It is said that a gentleman called Eusebi Güell

Loved all the art and all the work of Gaudí

So he entrusted him to design a residential complex in this area

Eventually the whole idea fell and ended up being the park we have today

The park is full of political and religious symbolism because Gaudí was very religious

What You SHOULD and SHOULDN'T Buy At The Dollar Tree - Duration: 8:59.

Hey guys today we are at my local Dollar Tree

because I'm going to be sharing with you some of my favorite tips for shopping here

This is going to be sort of like my money-saving series

But since you can't essentially save money at a store where everything is already a dollar I'm going to share with you things you should

definitely buy at the Dollar Tree and then things that maybe you shouldn't buy as well as some other tips and tricks for when you

Are shopping at your local Dollar Tree! Let's go

One thing you should always always always buy at the dollar tree is their gift wrap and their gift bags

The gift wrap, the bags...they're always a deal. The party stores can charge you anywhere from $4- $8 for a roll of

wrapping paper. But at the Dollar Tree always $1. It's also great for birthdays, they have baby shower stuff,

they have wedding stuff. As well as all the gift boxes

you need.

Ribbons and all the accessories you need for your gift wrapping.

This is so much cheaper than buying party supplies at the grocery store, or at a party store

You can get plates, cutlery...like here

you can get a whole set of 48 cutlery for only a dollar this is great for any of your parties and they come in

all sorts of different colors for whatever party you're having.

One time you should always buy at the Dollar Tree

is gift cards. Because at the regular stores

They're going to charge you anywhere from $3 to $4 sometimes $7 for a gift card

But here you can get them for $1, and lots of times

they're 2 for $1, so only pay in 50 cents.

*reading card* like turning 50 doesn't mean you have to give up living

life in the fast lane,

It just means you have to make more rest stops along the way.

Let's talk about office supplies

and what office supplies are worth it when you're shopping at the Dollar Tree. At the end of the day an index card

index card and you can get a rack of index cards for a dollar or you can pay around $2-$2.50 at an

Office supply store.

another things that's always a deal at the Dollar Tree is the poster boards. These are easily $1.50-$2

Cvs, or Office Depot.

But you can get them $1 or sometimes 2/$1 at the Dollar Tree.

An important thing to keep in mind is just during back to school season lots of times Staples, or

Walmart, you can get a lot of the office supplies for a lot cheaper because they are doing back to school sales.

So you kind of have to shop around depending on the time of year.

another thing that's never worth it to get at the Dollar Tree

when it comes to the office supply area is things like folders and lined paper

So folders that you can get at the dollar tree

It's usually like four of them for a dollar when you can get single ones of them at the office supply store for like 10 Or 15 cents each

Another thing, I always recommend you don't bother with at the Dollar Tree

Is these scissors both office supplies scissors and kitchen scissors. I bought both, and they're just not worth it

They just break really fast they never cut they're not worth it spend the few extra dollars and get quality scissors elsewhere please for glasses

Plates, glasses, vases, drinkware

all of this stuff is awesome to get at the Dollar Tree

They have great variety. It's usually pretty good quality and honestly I've gotten some of my favorite drink-ware from the Dollar Tree

I'll actually tell you a funny story, few years ago Michael

and I hosted our first ever family Thanksgiving at our house, and I didn't have enough like little bowls

for things like cranberry sauce and gravy and all of that kind of stuff and so I actually went to the Dollar Tree and in the

seasonal section that time of year they had these like nice, crystal looking ones

and I bought a bunch of them to put all my sauces in and actually got

compliments from my guests on how nice my serving ware was, and I had just bought it for a dollar at the Dollar Tree!

I also like all their drink ware and their mugs are really great as well

We actually got these really fancy like scotch-- not fancy, but we got these fancy looking scotch tumblers here and Michael loves them

They're his favorite glass to drink of scotch out of doing a good one for girls

Yeah, we have like some really nice ones, but he's always like give me the dollar tree one.

Alright, let's talk about makeup

I think makeup from the Dollar Tree is kind of what has, in some ways, spun

the Dollar Tree off to be really crazy. You see tons of people here on YouTube doing Dollar Tree makeup challenges

I have always kind of steered cleared from the makeup aisle and the reason I do that is because my dollar trees don't carry the

name brand makeup. For me, I would rather go to the drugstore spend five dollars or six dollars on a lipstick

I know it's going to last and is going to wear really nice

it's going to look good.

As opposed to spending one dollar on a kind of crappy lipstick that's going to dry my lips out and not look so good.

So it's kind of hit or miss depending on your Dollar Tree.

I know some dollar trees carry, like, Maybelline, and if yours does

that's really great. If you have some of the better name brands and it can be worth it.

Just always be checking your expiration date.

When it comes to health and beauty stuff if you can find name brands

it's always a good deal, but just remember to be cautious of the size. Sometimes you get really small ones

and it doesn't end up being a good deal. Where I would steer clear is the

off-brand names. You don't even know where they come from lots of times. You don't know what the ingredients are

The same is going to go with vitamins and medication. I don't recommend getting off-brand medicines or vitamins at the Dollar Tree

There is actually a consumer reports study that tested

Multivitamins from the Dollar Tree and found that more than half of them were missing really important ingredients

So when it comes to these products it might be totally ok to use them

But I'd rather be safe than sorry with items in this category.

A quick little tip is to avoid batteries at the dollar tree

I was actually reading an article where somebody had done studies on how long the batteries

lasted and actually found that the batteries that they sells at the Dollar Tree don't have nearly as much charge as the regular ones

So it's worth it to spend a little bit more money and get ones that are going to last longer.

Alright, let's talk about cleaning supplies this one can be really hit or miss sometimes

it's a really good deal to buy at the dollar store if you can find name brands you love

But sometimes the grocery store will put these items on sale and there are often good coupons for these types of products

But always remember that your dollar tree will accept manufacturer's coupons

I'll put more about the coupon policy down below so cleaning supplies can be hit or miss

but I find the cleaning tools like you can get these Brillo pads a 12-pack for only a dollar and

Same with like these scrubbies these are all really good deals. Like I said before I don't

suggest that you go for the off brand names you just don't really know what's in it

And usually it's so watered down that

it's not worth your money at all.

If you can find name brands then you still have to be a little bit careful up size like here's a Gain

but this is a really little guy. Som some of it, you just have to use your best judgement to decide

what's worth it. One thing I never seem to find worth it is the dish soap these are palmolive

Which is what I use

But there's such tiny little guys and you can get much larger ones for a better deal per ounce at the grocery store.

Another thing that's totally not worth it to get at the Dollar Tree is the toilet paper the toilet paper. Here is maybe

150 to 250 maybe 300 sheets a roll.

The ones you can get the grocery store are 500 to

1,000 sheets a roll. So, you're actually going to save more money if you buy those ones instead.

Alright, Let's talk about food and let's talk about the refrigerated and frozen food first.

For me, I kind of steer clear this aisle and let me tell you why. When Michael

And I first moved in together, mind you I was 17,

I was just out of high school and money was really tight and so we went to the Dollar Tree a lot,

I mean, we still do... but I had bought some cheese at the Dollar Tree some shredded cheese

and when I took the cheese

And I tried to melt it on a piece of bread it honestly didn't look like cheese

any more it looked like plastic.

And actually if you look at the ingredients a lot of the dairy products and meat products in the Dollar Store

You'll find that it's not really exactly what you'll think for example

Look at the shredded cheese that I found at my local Dollar Tree

You can see the first 1, 2, 3, 4,...5 ingredients, there's not even any dairy in here at all.

And they're sort of claiming that it is cheese

So I would say if you're buying

food from the Dollar Tree to just check your ingredients or to make sure you're getting what you think you're getting.

I take this same approach in the dried food aisle a lot of these items can be really good deals

But always check the ingredients to make sure that you're getting exactly what they say it is and also check the size as well

I actually compared a couple of brand name items from my

Dollar Tree, and then I compared them to the grocery store

I went them right over to the grocery store on the same day

I thought some of these things would be better deals at the grocery store, but with rising grocery prices

I actually surprisingly found that almost everything was a better deal at the dollar tree

The only thing that wasn't a better deal was the mini bag of frosted flakes which cost more per ounce.

So I say you might be able to find better deals at the grocery store when they're running really great sales. In general, most of

the brand name foods at the Dollar Tree will save you money. Just be aware of the products that come in really tiny packages because

These aren't always deals.

Why We're Worried About Honey Boo Boo - Duration: 5:54.

If a person's upbringing is an indication of their future, Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson

may be facing an uphill climb.

Growing up in a household where eating "sketti and ketchup" with Mountain Dew and Red Bull

was the norm, she became a reality TV star as the world delighted in morbid curiosity

at her family's antics.

And that's barely scraping the surface of why Honey Boo Boo could be looking back at

a life of regret.

"Those other girls must be crazy if they think they're gonna beat me, honey boo boo child!"

Growing up on TV

Combining her family's questionable lifestyle with Alana's precociousness, TLC knew they

had struck working class gold for their hit show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

From their wacky diet, to their Southern twang, this show became a spinoff success from Toddlers

& Tiaras.

TLC brought Honey Boo Boo to millions of Americans' TV screens during her formative years.

Which means from the age of seven, the beauty queen had gotten nothing but positive reinforcement

for participating in the some of the most non-complementary representations of American

culture.

That might be tough to reverse, but we're hoping she can pull it off.

Dangerous scandal

After it became apparent that Honey Boo Boo's mom, June Shannon, allowed a convicted sex

offender near her children — and possibly dated him — TLC pulled the plug on the family's

gravy train, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

Mama June maintained her innocence and even threatened to sue TLC, making it unlikely

that any other network would ever risk putting them back on the air.

Fortunately for Mama June, she found a new home in WE tv, which helped craft her reality

TV resurrection.

Honey Boo Boo could really use a solo gig to get a little distance from her family,

but at this point that would likely require legal emancipation from her mom — a stressful

situation we wouldn't wish on anyone.

Mom stole the spotlight

After several years out of the spotlight, interrupted only briefly by a stint on WE

tv's Marriage Boot Camp, the network greenlit Mama June: From Not To Hot, the series documenting

her 300-pound weight loss.

And while Mama June's decision to get healthy is admirable, as BuzzFeed points out, it was

also likely a calculated attempt at shedding the controversy surrounding her relationship

scandals.

Not to mention, the new show places Honey Boo Boo, who was previously the star, in the

backseat.

Now 11 years old, this little girl has to deal with a fame downgrade.

Health concerns

Thanks to her family's poor decision-making, Honey Boo Boo is probably the most public

face of America's childhood obesity crisis.

"She has respiratory issues..."

"Corn dogs!"

"She's on a lot of steroids everyday."

"Deep-fried turkey!"

At over 120 pounds, she's already struggling to lose weight, which Mama June shared in

a since-deleted Instagram post.

Even though Mama June parlayed her own weightloss journey into a new angle for Honey Boo Boo's

reality TV comeback, her daughter wants no part of it.

In a clip from Mama June: From Not To Hot, Honey Boo Boo adamantly rejects any healthful

living, saying:

"I'm not jumping on any bandwagon, unless it has, like, cheeseburgers and stuff, so..."

On top of that, one of the show's other exploitative plot points is that Honey Boo Boo's new stepmom,

Jennifer, encourages her poor eating habits.

Add to that, body-shaming, bullying, and a relentless amount of public pressure to shed

the weight, and there exists a psychological strain that would burden any adult, no less

a child.

Thankfully, Honey Boo Boo is still young, which means she still has time to get healthy.

Her debut single

Honey Boo Boo recorded the song "Movin' Up" with producer Adam Barta, featuring most of

her family.

It's an objectively bad song made by a man who has created a cottage industry recording

questionable tracks and accompanying music videos with reality TV stars.

Let's take a closer look at that "producer" Barta.

This is the man who also recorded a track for Patricia "Tan Mom" Krentcil, as well as

a songs with Teen Mom stars Farrah Abraham and her mom, Debra.

We'll let his resume speak for himself on this one.

Money

According to Mama June, Honey Boo Boo's reality TV money is being kept safely in a trust,

which is a good thing since one of the young star's famous catchphrases is:

"Dollar make me holler, Honey Boo Boo."

But even if Mama June doesn't swipe Honey Boo Boo's money, like older sister Anna alleges

she did with hers, that eventual payout might be tough to handle.

Have you ever seen an adorable kid star — urged into fame by their parents — lose their

mind the second they got free of them, and got their money?

Honey Boo Boo should use Corey Feldman as a cautionary tale, and head straight to a

meeting with a financial planner.

Earning respect

Many reality TV stars face serious challenges in earning respect from their audience.

Much like point-and-laugh shows like Jersey Shore, Flavor of Love and The Simple Life,

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo was viewed as mindless entertainment.

"I don't smell. You wanna smell?"

"I don't care."

"I hadn't took a bath for two weeks!"

"Yuck. She hadn't took a bath in two weeks!"

So, while it may seem innocent enough to laugh at an oddball American family, the reality

is that a little girl started her career as the butt of everyone's joke.

And while that may be good for short-term success, considering how many people have

laughed at her, and not with her, little Alana has a long road ahead in order to be taken

seriously.

Child star

Finding success at a very young age can be tough.

Just ask people like Tatum O'Neal or Danny Bonaduce, who went from seriously cute, to

seriously troubled — in the blink of an eye.

Of course that doesn't mean Alana is guaranteed a tragic future.

For every Tatum O'Neal, there's a Jodie Foster.

But for the moment, American audiences know one version of Alana: a goofy, overweight

little girl from the South with a crazy family — meaning that Alana will soon need to be

strategic about managing her image.

With a full-family weight loss show supposedly already in talks, it's looking like reality

TV producers are angling for more exposure.

That's an incredible amount of pressure for anyone at any age, and the fact that it currently

rests on the shoulders of child is all the more troubling.

Her 15 minutes

Though horrifying, the scandal that caused TLC to pull the plug on Here Comes Honey Boo

Boo sped up an inevitable conclusion: that some day, American audiences would eventually

grow tired of watching that show.

Many reality TV stars have since become aware of their short shelf lives, which is why you

see people like Snooki, Bethenny Frankel or the Kardashians turn their 15 minutes of fame

into a legitimate, money-making empire.

Even if the Honey Boo Boo gang had taken their fame seriously, and leverage their show into

a brand, their messy personal lives were destined to turn from funny to sad.

In other words: their time is up.

🌊 NIGHT SNORKELING WITH MANTA RAYS IN KONA, HAWAII (You Need To Try This) - Duration: 5:21.

Ready for the manta ray adventure

What is going members of the Barrio

It is Jon coming to you from the harbor in Kona

And if you're new here I want to make sure that you're subscribed

And have notifications turned on to keep up with all the adventures.

Alright tonight we are going to be doing one of the top activities in Kona.

That every single person i've met said is a Must Do

We're going to go snorkeling with manta rays

And we're going to be doing it with Manta Adventures

This should be pretty awesome.

We're going to be getting out of here in a few minutes

There's going to be fresh air, some of you can come out here

We'll pull the seats up.

If I catch anyone with my beer then i'm stopping the boat right there.

That's for my cleanup.

Captain told us we're going to be going somewhere less busy

Then where the other boats go.

So I am really excited to hear that

Very nice breeze up here I must admit.

Why do dolphins keep following us everywhere?

These manta rays are very beautiful creatures

Super docile

No teeth, no barb , no stingers.

Their teeth is basically like this stuff you're stepping on.

Little like sand paper. Fine sand paper.

Throat hole a little bit bigger than a quarter.

They couldn't swallow your toe if they wanted to guys.

Don't worry about that.

At night time they'll be coming up real close to you guys.

I mean inches away from your face.

No one believes me

Until they're a couple of inches away from their face.

It's cool I actually have the whole front of the boat to myself right now.

And they kind of went through the ground rules.

I had no ideas that the manta rays were actually marked here.

And if you find a manta ray that's not marked.

You can name it.

Big thing is, he said no touching.

So i'm going to definitley listen to him on that one.

We're going to be holding on to these for the manta rays when they come out shortly.

The first time that one of them came near me I got afraid and I actually let go of what we were holding on to.

It was that intense.

So it is a pretty controlled experience.

Everybody is holding onto something.

I would think of it like a show.

Going on right underneath you.

The guides were really cool.

One of them actually took my go pro and swam around a little bit.

The captain was nice.

It was a very professional , very well run experience.

I highly recommend it if you come to Kona

Mourn or rejoice on Tish'a b'Av?

Tish'a B'Av is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar.

History is full of catastrophic events that befell Jews on that day.

Their timing may have been accidental or intentional.

In particular, the First and Second Temples were both destroyed on that day.

We mourn them every year on that day.

This is how this mourning is conducted.

In the three weeks leading up to Tish'a b'Av, we must not play or listen to music,

conduct weddings, shave or cut our hair, or wear new clothes.

In the nine days prior, we must not eat meat, drink wine, or wear fresh clothes.

On the day itself, we must fast all day.

Before the fast, we must eat hard-boiled eggs and simulated "ashes".

We must not wash, apply lotions, wear leather shoes, have sex, or even greet one another.

We must sit on the floor or on low stools and read the Book of Lamentations under dim

lights.

We must refrain from learning or discussing anything that is not sad.

It is fair to ask the question: Why must we mark Tish'a b'Av in this manner?

Why should we mourn so intensely all the terrible things that have happened to us in history,

even millennia ago?

After all, Pessah, Hanukkah, and Purim are celebrated as joyous holidays, even though

they recall times when we endured slavery, religious coercion, and a collective death

sentence.

So why shouldn't Tish'a b'Av be a joyous time as well?

One can argue that Pessah, Hanukkah, and Purim are celebrated as joyous holidays because

we won: We went from slavery to physical freedom, from religious coercion to religious freedom,

and from a death sentence to a reprieve.

But Tish'a b'Av commemorates events when we did not win:

-First, the destroyed Temple was not rebuilt.

Yes, but we can say that a modern Judaism, anchored in ethical behavior, study and services,

emerged and flourished in many lands!

-Second, the six million dead of the Holocaust will not come back.

Yes, but we can say that neither will those who died in the events of Pessah, Hanukkah

and Purim.

Furthermore, the State of Israel was born from the ashes of the Holocaust and a Jewish

renaissance ensued!

-Third, the expulsion from Spain was never undone.

Yes, but we can say that it led to the spread of Jewish culture and to Jewish achievements

elsewhere.

For example: I am glad *I* was forced out of Egypt, where I was born and raised!

The point is: Judaism survived and flourished in ALL cases.

Isn't that cause for celebration?

Of course, we must remind *non-Jews* of what happened to us.

But how intensely must we remember it ourselves?

Can't it be paralyzing?

Let's examine this question.

First, we Jews REMEMBER.

Two anecdotes will illustrate this point.

First, at a formal dinner in Washington, in May 1952, the Israeli Ambassador, Abba Eban,

told President Truman: We do not have orders or decorations.

Our material strength is small and greatly strained.

We have no tradition of formality or chivalry.

One thing, however, is within the power of Israel to confer.

It is the gift of immortality.

Those whose names are bound up with Israel's history never become forgotten.

We are, therefore, now writing the name of President Truman upon the map of our country.

Eban later recalled: As I left the rostrum I saw the tough-minded

President burying his face in a handkerchief without any effort to restrain his emotion.

The next day he sent me a letter asking me for a text of my address: "You spoke so

flatteringly about me that for a moment I had the impression that I was dead".

Second, when Napoleon was traveling through Europe, he entered a synagogue where people

were weeping, sitting on low stools, holding candles and reading from books.

He asked an aide why these people were weeping.

He was told they fast and mourn the destruction of their Temple and the loss of their land.

Napoleon asked how many years they have been doing this and was told it was almost 2000

years.

He then exclaimed: A nation that cries and fasts for so long

over the loss of their land and their Temple will surely be rewarded with their land and

their Temple.

Memory allowed us to last.

Judaism itself is founded on the collective memory of the revelation at Sinai.

The Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidism, taught:

Forgetfulness leads to exile, while remembrance is the secret of redemption.

Visitors to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, see these words on their way

out.

The Torah commands us to remember a lot of things, happy and sad.

Let us review where the injunction to remember ("Zakhor!") appears:

We must remember slavery, a sad event.

The Torah says: Remember that you were a slave in the land

of Egypt.

[Deut.

5:15; 15:5; 16:12; 24:18]

We must remember the Exodus, a happy event.

The Torah says: Remember the day when you went out of the

land of Egypt all the days of your life.

[Deuteronomy 16:3]

We must remember the Revelation at Sinai, a happy event.

The Torah says: But beware and watch yourself very well, lest

you forget the things that your eyes saw, and lest these things depart from your heart,

all the days of your life.

And you shall make them known to your children and to your children's children the day

you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb.

[Deuteronomy 4:9–10]

We must remember Amalek, a sad event.

The Torah says: You shall remember what Amalek did to you

on the way, when you went out of Egypt... when you were faint and weary...

You shall obliterate the remembrance of Amalek from beneath the heavens.

You shall not forget!

[Deuteronomy 25:17–19]

We must remember our rebellion in the desert, a sad event.

The Torah says: Remember, do not forget, how you angered the

Lord, your God, in the desert; from the day that you went out of the land of Egypt until

you came to this place, you have been rebelling against the Lord.

[Deuteronomy 9:7]

We must remember Miriam badmouthing Moses and her punishment, a sad event.

The Torah says: Remember what the Lord, your God, did to Miriam

on the way, when you went out of Egypt.

[Deuteronomy 24:9]

We must remember Shabbat, a happy event.

The Torah says: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

[Exodus 20:8]

BUT the Torah does not spell out the manner in which we must remember.

Should the mood be gloomy or festive?

Is it the rabbis who are forcing us to mourn?

No!

That's what the people want, sometimes OVER the objections of the rabbis!

The Book of Esther says about the fast days: [The Jews] decreed for themselves and for

their seed the matter of fasting and lamenting.

[Esther 9:31]

The rabbis had to convince the people to mourn LESS.

The Talmud testifies to that: Our Rabbis taught: When the [second] Temple

was destroyed… large numbers in Israel became ascetics, binding themselves not to eat meat

or drink wine.

-Rabbi Yehoshua… asked them: My sons, why do you not eat meat or drink wine?

-They replied: Shall we eat flesh which used to be brought as an offering on the altar,

now that this altar is in abeyance?

Shall we drink wine which used to be poured as a libation on the altar, but now no longer?

-He said to them: If that is so, we should not eat bread either, because the meal offerings

have ceased.

-They said: [That is so, and] we can manage with fruit.

-[He said:] We should not eat fruit either, because there is no longer an offering of

first fruits.

-[They said:] Then we can manage with other fruits.

-[He said:] But we should not drink water, because there is no longer the ceremony of

the pouring of water, [Simchat Bet HaShoevah, which used to be performed on Sukkot when

the Temple was standing].

-To this they could find no answer, so he said to them: My sons, come and listen to

me.

Not to mourn at all is impossible, because the blow has fallen.

To mourn too much is also impossible, because we do not impose on the community a hardship

which the majority cannot endure…

-The Sages therefore have ruled as follows.

A man may paint his house, but he should leave a small area bare.

A man may prepare a full-course banquet, but he should leave out an item or two.

A woman may put on all her ornaments, but leave off one or two…

[Baba Batra 60b]

In other words, go on with your life, but create small reminders here and there.

You might think that mourning should stop when the consequences of what is being mourned

have been erased.

If so, they should have stopped mourning and fasting on Tish'a b'Av during the Second Temple

period, which lasted 586 years, since the Temple had been rebuilt.

But they didn't!

[Rambam on Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 1:3] They kept right on fasting.

Why?

Because that is what the people wanted.

Here is the story.

Four fast days commemorate the destruction of the First Temple:

-First, the Tenth of Tevet, commemorating the siege of Jerusalem by Babylon, culminating

in the conquest of Judah.

-Second, Tish'a b'Av, when the First Temple was actually destroyed.

-Third, the Fast of Gedalia, commemorating the assassination of the righteous governor

of Judah, which ended Jewish autonomy after the destruction of the First Temple.

-And fourth, the 17th of Tammuz, commemorating the breach of the walls of Jerusalem, which

led to the destruction of the Temple.

(It was the 9th of Tammuz for the first Temple, but was later changed to the 17th for second

Temple.]

After the Jews returned to Jerusalem and rebuilt the Temple, they wondered: Should we continue

to mourn or not?

With independence regained and the Temple rebuilt, should we still weep or should we

be glad?

The prophet Zechariah said to be glad, but the people refused!

[People were asking:] Should I weep... separating myself, as I have done...

for... [the] seventy years [of exile in Babylon]...?

[Zech.

7:3-5] The Lord of Hosts said as follows: The [four

fast days] shall become to the house of Judah days of joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts.

[Zech.

8:19] God said to rejoice on Tish'a b'Av!!

So why didn't we?

The Talmud answers: Rabbi Hanah ben Bizna has said in the name

of Rabbi Shim'on HaTzaddik: What is the meaning of [that] verse?

... Rav Papa replied: What it means is this: When there is peace, [these days] shall be

days of joy and gladness; when there is persecution, they shall be fast days; when there is no

persecution but yet not peace, then those who desire to fast may fast and those who

do not desire to fast need not fast.

[They asked:] If that is the case, [should the fast of] Tish'a b'Av also [be optional]?

Rav Papa replied: Tish'a b'Av is in a different category, because several misfortunes happened

on it...

[Rosh HaShana 18b] However, some rabbis had different opinions:

Rabbi Eleazar said in the name of Rabbi Hanina: Rabbi [Yehudah HaNasi] planted something on

Purim [which was not allowed back then], and bathed in the [bathhouse of the] marketplace

of Sepphoris on the 17th of Tammuz [a fast day] and [even] sought to abolish the fast

of Tish'a b'Av, but his colleagues would not agree.

Rabbi Abba ben Zabda ventured to remark: Rabbi, this was not the case.

What happened was that Tish'a b'Av [on that year] fell on Shabbat, and [the rabbis] postponed

it till [right] after Shabbat, and he said to them, "Since it has been postponed, let

it be postponed altogether [until next year], but the Sages would not agree..."

[Rabbi Eleazar then said: I stand corrected.]

[Meg. 5a-b] The great Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi, the compiler

of the Mishnah, was in favor of less mourning!

Also: Long ago, Rabban Gamliel, Rabbi Eleazar ben

Azariah, Rabbi Yehoshua and Rabbi Akiva... were coming up to Jerusalem together, and

just as they came to Mount Scopus they saw a fox emerging from the Holy of Holies.

They fell weeping [except] Rabbi Akiva who laughed.

They said to him: "Why are you laughing?"

He said: "Why are you weeping?"

They said to him: "A [holy] place… has now become the haunt of foxes, and we should

not weep?"

He said to them: "Here is why I am laughing.

[The prophecy of Micah says:] Because of you, Zion shall be plowed like

a field, [and Jerusalem shall become heaps of rubble.]

[Micah 3:12] [But the later prophecy of] Zechariah says:

Thus says the Lord of Hosts: Old men and old women shall again dwell in the streets of

Jerusalem [and every man with his staff in his hand for the fullness of days.

What are some possible reasons why the people wanted to keep Tish'a B'Av?

First, the facts: The observance of Tisha B'Av has increased steadily through the

centuries, both in the number of Jews observing it and in the severity of the strictures.

In a 2010 survey, 25% of Israelis reported they fast on Tish'a b'Av, and another

50% said they will not engage in recreational activities although they do not fast.

Evidently, people feel deeply that some days of mourning are necessary to balance the joyful

celebrations.

When some early Reform Jews favored celebrating Tisha B'Av as a day of rejoicing, because

the Temple's destruction led to what they thought was a better Judaism, the majority

shelved the idea and decided to simply ignore the day.

Today, many Reform congregations observe Tisha B'Av as a sad day in some form.

Now, the reasons.

First, the destruction of the first Temple proved that the Temple could be destroyed,

which is something many Jews at the time could not believe.

They did not think God would allow His house to be destroyed.

So one reason we mourn is to remind ourselves that no matter how good the current conditions

are, calamities CAN befall us again.

Second, by publicly remembering sad events, we remind gentiles of what antisemitism has

done to us Jews, but we also remind them that many of them helped us.

For example, Yad Vashem, the Holocaust museum in Jerusalem, contains the names of more than

20,000 righteous gentiles who saved Jews from Nazis.

Spielberg's genius in his movie Schindler's List was to publicize the Holocaust through

a righteous gentile, a man other gentiles can identify with.

In conclusion, we can say that the remembrance of bad events is necessary, but must be positive.

It must not be done to make anybody feel guilty or to incite towards vengeance.

Also, it must never be given as a reason to stay Jewish.

The Jewish philosopher Emil Fackenheim may have famously said: "Do not give Hitler

a posthumous victory!", but I disagree.

This is not a good reason to stay Jewish.

Today I am going to be talking about

if you are overweight, or if you have

blood sugar issues, there's a specific reason

why actually, you should be taking probiotics

or eating a significant amount of probiotics.

If you tuned into the last video

that I did on Friday, it really kind of got into

what a probiotic is, and how it basically

lines your intestine et cetera,

and what it does.

But there is a specific physiological reason

of what a probiotic does for your body.

The main physiological function of a probiotic

is actually just simply to break down

sugars and starches.

That's its main job.

If I was to ask what is a probiotic,

most people would say it affects your gut,

or it's very beneficial for your intestine,

or it strengthens your immune system.

But how does it do that?

And why does it do that?

When you take a probiotic,

or when you eat a fermented food,

basically you are ingesting them.

And as I said, the physiological function

of that probiotic,

because it is a living bacteria,

is actually just to go around

and find sugars and starches.

Then what it does, is it basically starts

to break down and decompose

those sugars and starches.

Then it makes it easier for those

sugars and starches to pass through

your intestine and get rid of.

So that's its main purpose.

And it's very beneficial for that.

I was actually in the radio the other day

and I heard this commercial for NuBiotix,

something along those lines.

It was talking about how to lose belly fat.

It said that it targeted specifically belly fat.

I thought okay, that sounds great in theory.

Now what is it?

If you start to look at it,

basically the main ingredient

in that is probiotics.

Understanding that when you take a probiotic,

again, its main function is to break down

sugars and starches, it's very beneficial

that you could start to eliminate

those waste products of sugars and starches

in your bodies, and eliminate that,

and reduce your weight

and help to regulate blood sugar.

Because if you have blood sugar issues,

what's the main component of that?

You have some sort of sugars and starches

and it signifies, and it has an insulin reaction,

and you can't control your blood sugar.

But again, it's having those carbohydrates there

in your body that you can't regulate.

And so taking a probiotic supplement

or eating probiotic foods, again, it's main job

is to break down sugars and starches

and help to better regulate your blood sugar.

After it does break down

them sugars and starches,

then it goes to populate your intestine,

where it's a living bacteria that it can actually

go to improve your immune system.

So again, when you take a probiotic supplement,

sometimes people say, "Oh it hurts my stomach,"

or, "It makes me gassy".

Understand that it's doing its job.

What's happening is that if you take

a probiotic supplement or eat fermented foods,

and it makes your stomach

really kind of feel not very good,

it's doing its job.

The problem that you may encounter

is releasing that digestive waste.

That's the bigger issue, and understanding

that probiotics are actually there to benefit you

from a physiological standpoint.

If you do that, if you understand

okay, if I take a probiotic supplement,

its first job is to get rid of the waste,

which is the sugars and starches in your body.

Then once it does that,

it tries to find a happy home.

If it can't do that, if your gut is out of whack,

and really it's not a good place to populate,

it's just gonna pass out.

That's why they always recommend that

when you take a probiotic supplement,

that you take it every single day.

When really, you shouldn't have to do that.

If you have a good functioning gut,

then probiotics should be happy

and populate in your gut.

But those probiotic supplements,

again, its main job is really to break down

the sugars and starches.
