Hey guys good morning I'm Dani Ruberti with Dr. Pete. Hey guys thank you for
joining us today! We're in our natural remedies series talking about hypothyroidism.
Yeah Dr. Pete I think this is going to be something really good for us
to talk about because all the things that we've been talking about in terms
of natural remedies, none of them are rare. The things that
we're talking about are things that a lot of folks are dealing with so is it
something also that all those lines? In fact this is
really the number one autoimmune disease on the planet or condition on the planet.
It's affecting nearly 20 million Americans right now but 60% of people
really are not being diagnosed properly and 13 of the 50 top selling drugs
pharmaceuticals on the planet have to do with what's called hypothyroidism, which
is a low functioning thyroid and so it's something that so many deal with. But the
thing is Dani that so many people are coming in and saying Dr. Pete I had my
thyroid tested yet I don't feel right, it came back normal but I don't feel right.
The things that they're dealing with are brain fog, depression,
losing their hair, dry skin, yet their getting acne at the same time,
constipation, ... so many things that are affecting people and hypothyroidism
is one of those things that if you address it properly and understand
really the chemistry behind it we can all get on the road to a happy healthy
life. First and foremost Dr. Pete can you
explain what a thyroid is? Absolutely the thyroid is part of the endocrine system...
the small little gland sits in front of your throat shaped like a butterfly.
And in Greek it talks about the meaning of a shield that really sits
right in front of your throat. So it's just a part of the endocrine system, a little
gland but it has powerful benefits for the body. So you kind of went through
if your thyroid is low.. some of the symptoms...the brain fog...things like that... I know that the fatigue even though
you're getting proper rest you just don't have the energy you feel like
you're wore out all the time, constipation, effecting your
menstrual cycle, so many things are affected when a person has low
functioning thyroid...and probably there's a lot of people out there that don't even
realize it can happen. Yeah in fact I think I study I recently that about 60% of
people don't realize they have a low functioning thyroid...
they just feel miserable... they feel miserable all the time and they don't have
the energy that they need... And they're just wondering why some of their hair's
falling out yet they're making healthy choices... they just don't understand why
everything's not going the way it So let me ask you this what is,
the main culprit? The main culprit is stress at the root
of a low functioning thyroid is stress, in fact when the body adapts
physiologically to the stressors around it and fails to recover effectively we call
that HPA axis dysfunction... and when the body's not recovering effectively the
stress it affects the thyroid in the body it causes havoc to occur. So are there any
other causes that someone needs to know about that they might be low on? Absolutely so stress is the main
culprit and chemical toxicity which we're going to get from some of the tap
waters... chlorine, fluorine, as well as, bromine that comes from white flour are
toxins that are actually going to compete with iodine that the thyroid
needs to really get on the road to a happy healthy life. But there's two real kind of underlying conditions when it comes to hypothyroidism. Number
one is nutrient deficiency. A person that is deficient in the nutrients iodine,
selenium, as well as, zinc. The other really underlying condition is someone
who has an autoimmune condition and it's really the body's attacking itself.
What most people don't realize is that two of the great offenders that will
actually cause you by to attack itself and attack the thyroid are things like
gluten. The protein in gluten called gliadin, as well as, the protein in dairy
called casein have a similar protein structure to your thyroid tissue. So a
lot of times because of our standard American diet in the stresses the world
people have what's called a leaky gut... which means you eat and the gluten and
the gland in the casing and the toxins get into your in your bloodstream
through the intestinal lining caused an autoimmune response and the body
actually looks at it as an invader and it attacks it but because they have a
similar protein structure to your thyroid tissue it attacks your thyroid.
When the body is attacking a thyroid we call that Hashimoto's thyroiditis and
ninety percent of those with the low functioning thyroid (hypothyroidism)
actually have Hashimoto's. They have a body that's attacking itself.
Wow so Dr. Pete a little bit earlier you had mentioned something to
me, Modification before Medication. Absolutely. What does that mean exactly
how does that come into play right now with hypothyroidism? Well when it comes to
natural remedies that when we want to get on the road to health and really help
your thyroid begin to function properly... I believe that modification always comes
before medication, modification before medication. What does that mean? It means
that we're going to modify our lifestyle before we just run to the medications
and if we begin to make some simple tweaks to our lifestyle choices we all
can actually get on the road you're happy and healthy life. Okay Dr. Pete then can you kind of jump right into you know things that we can modify
in terms of lifestyle and then maybe some things in our diet?
Absolutely when it comes to simple modifications: number one you have
to address the stress, if you don't address the stress in your life and
provide a counterbalance to the stresses of life, the chemical stress, the physical
stress, and the emotional stresses... then stress will manage you. The body will
adapt but not recover and at the root of every disease processes the body
adaptive physiological stress and did not recover from it. So how are we going to
do that? Number one our favorite adaptogens, StressRX™... adaptogens are proving to
affect the HPA axis in the body which helps the body restore itself from
stress. Number two we're going to heal the gut. Okay when a person has a leaky
gut that's going to create havoc in the body so we're going to make sure that
we're always doing what's necessary to replenish the good helpful bacteria and
also remove some of those inhibitors...gluten, casein, sugar
that are going to kind of break down their gut and we're going to add
good fermented foods and vegetables like sauerkraut, kombucha, kefir rich in
fermented cultures. Also we're going to get proper rest.
Provide margins for yourself...make sure that you make getting the rest that you
need. In fact when we get rest before midnight is actually equivalent to three
hours after midnight because that's where the melatonin levels are the
highest and neuro-transmitters and there's also other things that we can do
when it comes to your diet like we talked about. When it comes to your diet
and hypothyroidism okay we're going to begin to incorporate things that
actually replenish those nutrients that are deficient selenium, iodine, as well as,
zinc and we're going to do that to some of your food.
So lets go real quick... Number one: I love these I could eat them all
time I actually eat them for dinner...are whole eggs organic whole eggs typically that
are free-roaming eggs are rich in the nutrients selenium and iodine. So whole
eggs are very very good for you when it comes to replacing selenium. Also seaweed... seaweed is something
that's very rich in iodine so that instead of some of the
medications try seaweed for more iodine. Also when it comes to Brazil
nuts. Well Brazil nuts have all the selenium your body
needs, rich in selenium so many things we can begin to incorporate. Actually Dr. Pete all you need to eat are two of these a day... and you get all the selenium you need.
Yeah it doesn't take much!
Hey shoot even if you didn't like Brazil nuts, I know I don't know why you
wouldn't, but even if you don't just choke those suckers down, rich in
selenium and you can be amazed at how you do, but other things like apple cider
vinegar... apple cider vinegar is great, things like coconut oil and coconut oil is one of those things that's good and what's coconut
oil going to help you it's antimicrobial nature but it's going to help with
hormones. It's going to help the communication
between the organs of your endocrine system. Vitamin d3 is something that you can
get from the sun just getting in the sun for 15 minutes a day the UVB rays
will actually convert cholesterol in the body to vitamin d3. There's simple things
that we can do, just things you can add to your life... Now something else I want ask you about that too
Dr. Pete because this kind of blew my mind's you mentioned earlier...I love kale
I will eat it in my kale salad, I'll all eat it raw you...mentioned that kale might be
something that could be contributing to the your low functioning thyroid...how in the world is that possible? Crazy does yeah so we're always talking about a kale is one the
most nutrient dense super foods on the planet so everyone should be eating kale
and you think about some of these health freaks so to speak so they go and they
put five cups of kale in there such as everything absolutely because it's
pretty nutrient dense. The problem is this cruciferous vegetables: things like
kale, broccoli, cauliflower okay they actually inhibit your body's ability to
produce and synthesize iodine in the body. It works against you. Now that
doesn't mean I want you to stop with kale & cruciferous vegetables, but what
I'm going to encourage you to do especially if you have low iodine level... I'm going
to encourage you to steam your broccoli okay, ferment your broccoli, do anything
you put but don't eat it raw and when you're going to consume it is especially
if you have low iodine levels I'm going to consume about a cup or less a day.
Okay what we find with a cup or less per day, especially if you're fermenting it or
steaming it... you can get all the good nutrients but it's going to kind of
inhibit those anti-nutrients in the body and you're going to get all the benefits
without the risk. But yeah that's one of the things that people say well I'm
eating cruciferous vegetables I'm to where I'm supposed to but my hair is
falling out... what's going on? It's because the body is literally competing against itself.
Crazy isn't it... that when it comes to just simple supplementation there's
things that you can do you. You know sometimes you're not getting the
nutrients from your diet that your that you'd like, so incorporate in or get
supplementation with zinc, okay incorporating iodine, selenium, vitamin D
things like B vitamins which are very good l-tyrosine is also a good
supplement and adaptogens.. we love StressRX™ because StressRX™ is going to
help that stress response and help the body do - what it's supposed to and get on the road
to have a happy healthy life. Why? Because we want to create resiliency. Health isn't
just about feeling good... people feel good and die of heart attacks and die of cancer. Health is
about my body's ability to adapt to the environment and recover from it. It's the
essence of resiliency. It's the reason why zebras don't get ulcers and why because
they're able to adapt and recover so quickly to the environment that they're
surrounded with. And when we can increase resiliency we're all going to get on the
road to a happy and healthy life. Thank you so much Dr. Pete because this is
a wonderful and I hope that for those of you out there that might be going
through this...gives you some hope in knowing the
There's hope for you. Please know there's hope no matter where you find yourself in
this journey. If we just turn the ship around and make simple practical tweaks
to your lifestyle... remember Modification before Medication...
you too will be encouraged and get on the road to a happy and healthy life.
Well thank you Dr. Pete and we're going to be back next week at this time
continuing our series on natural remedies so I hope you to see you guys next week.
Thanks guys! You have a wonderful day. Bless You.
