Hey! How are you guys? A big part of a non-native English speaker's accent is
something that we will talk about today that is called flapping, and another
thing called glottal stops in American English. Let's first talk about flapping.
"Flap" first of all, the verb flap, is what a bird does with their wings, right? A
bird flaps their wings to fly. This verb could also be used to talk about the
action of the tongue when you go RRR to make the sound of the R in Portuguese of
caro, barato. That RRR of the R in those words is "flapping." Well this sound
happens in words in English. So let's have an example here of flapping. First
of all, let me start with two different words: mad and mat. Notice how I'm
almost saying this plosive at the end, but I don't say it, right? Mad. Mat. Let's
put ER at the end of both these words, okay? To form two new words: madder and
matter. Madder. Matter. Did you hear a difference there? No!
Because these two words are pronounced exactly the same in American English. So
when you have instances of two D's or two T's surrounded by vowels in a word, in
American English that receives a flapping sound. Madder. Matter. But what I
hear Brazilians doing a lot is, especially beginners, trying to pronounce
both of these D's or both of these T's mad-der, mat-ter, which definitely is
incorrect. Or they're putting way too much emphasis, even more emphasis than a
British person would; they say maDDer maTTer but that even sounds like an
accent in American English because we flap. You'll hear the flapping everywhere
if you start listening to American English. Madder. Matter. Water. That's a big
difference between British English and American English. Water, in British
English, and water: we do more of the ER in water. So, make sure when you're
thinking of the flapping sound as the R in Portuguese, and when you're
translating that over into English when you're practicing this a lot, that you
don't mess up how the other R's are actually pronounced. The R here is
actually gonna be a hard RR, you know, from American English. So I... this
phrase here is for you to just say over and over and over in your head to make
sure you can tell the difference between this, what you could see as an R, that
flap, pretty pretty, and the other R's, which are hard R's in English. RRR,
right? Interior de São Paulo! Pretty regularly. Pretty regularly. Just say it
over and over again to get the flapping and to get the R's. Pretty regularly. Pretty
regularly. I think it's a little bit of a tongue twister too, huh?
I already said that we can do this with double T and double D. You can also do
this with certain instances of single T and single D surrounded by vowels. So
let's take a look. We have, first of all starting with double T, two words. Better.
Little. Little. And note here that you can actually do this with an L after the
double T or the double D as well. Little. Little. Moving on, we have wedding. Wedding.
So again, Brazilians here, a lot of times I will hear something like wed-ding'
wed-ding' right? Or maybe even wedging... No, this is.. this doesn't really sound like a
T or a D. It's just a bland, generic flap. Wedding. And here too: buddy. Buddy "What's
up buddy?" It's pretty common for men my age to call each other "buddy," like, "What's
up buddy?" It's not as common for women to call men that, and women definitely.. I mean,
almost always don't call other women "buddy." But just to let you know. So I already
gave the example of "water" here for single T, but another couple examples are
data, data. And also pity, pity. And finally single D examples: studies, studies, body
body. That one's weird. I've always thought that the O is strange in the word "body,"
right? Like how.. why isn't it like boe-dy, boe-dy, you know? It's BAH.. Definitely don't
be afraid to open the mouth wide to say this word: body. But then we have a word
like mulheres, right? Women: where the O turns into an IH. I can understand why
English is hard. But one more time: body. Now as is always the case with English,
we have exceptions, okay? So I just thought of an exception with every
single one: the double T, double D, and then single T, single D. So this is just
to remind you that every time that you see a double T or a double D doesn't
necessarily mean that it's flapped. So for example, mitt. A mitt..
you can see I'm almost pronouncing the T: mitt. A mitt is what you use to take
something hot out of the oven. It's like a glove for your hand, and also that's
the word for the glove that they use in the sport of baseball. And with an S at
the end, mitts, you don't flap that. That's like
impossible. And that's probably because it's not surrounded by vowels, right? Well
here's an instance where it's surrounded by vowel sounds, oddly, and also the L,
which I said is possible; a word like paddle, for example, could be flapped with
DDL. But here, oddly, oddly, actually gets the same thing with that plosive
pronunciation that I talked about in the last video, where the word odd, which
means like "estranho," right? By itself would just be odd, like the D almost gets
pronounced, but it gets stuck there. And then putting the -ly to make it an adverb,
we still stay with the D getting stuck here and not flapped: oddly. I don't know
why; it's just what we do. And then two other examples; obviously these aren't
flapped because they're not in between other vowels, so the first letter of each
of these is pronounced hard, definitely with a TT and a DD, and the last
ones, plosives at the end of a word, usually almost pronounced, but not. So tot,
which is a little kid, tot. Dad. Dad. Awesome.
Well there is an accent in Great Britain called Cockney. It's the same accent of
the singer Adele. Her name's Adele, not A-delly. Adele. And
they actually remove this flap and this sound completely. So they will say better,
better. And also little, little. Okay Gavin, well why are you teaching an accent
that's only a small percentage of English speakers? Well actually this
complete removal of that sound is called a glottal stop. Now the glottis is a
part of the throat, and a glottal stop means that your throat is actually.. or
your mouth is actually like stopping some of the air from moving, and creating
that little, little, separating the sounds in that, okay? Your glottis is doing that.
And it's kind of funny that the word "glottal" has a double T in there, because
we as native American English speakers would say glottal, but a cockney speaker
might say glottal, glottal. To kind of practice what this sounds like, because
there are American English words where this happens too,
and I'll tell you about those in a second, but you will need to practice
this, try saying this Portuguese little phrase-let here, right? Like, "Eu fui à aula."
Right? I hear Brazilians sometimes saying like, with the crase here, "Eu fui àaula."
With just a very long "àaula." But, it's possible to separate these too, and I've heard
Brazilians say before, "Eu fui à-aula. À-aula." Something like that. Obviously I'm not a
native speaker, but I'm trying to reproduce that. So try that there: when
you actually have to create a space here, a break here, that's a glottal stop
happening in the back your throat. À-aula. À-aula. And that is the feel
that you need to remember when you start to pronounce these words in American
English. So, yes, the glottal stop happens in
American English too! It happens when we have the T sound, either the double T or
the single T, and on the next syllable the word ends with an N, the letter N, okay?
So, let me pronounce these words for you, and listen for the glottal stop: button,
kitten, gotten, eaten, mountain, Britain. I'm not saying BriTTain, and I'm not
saying Brit.. Brit-ain, like trying to flap it. It's almost like impossible for me to
feel what that feels like, to flap that, because we simply don't do that in
English. There's some people in American English who like to try to speak
"correctly" and will say, "Could you get me a buTTon? A buTTon?" But that sounds really
weird, and 95% of the time you will hear words pronounced with a glottal stop
like this, like "I've eaten at Outback Steakhouse three times." I've eaten. Eaten.
The T disappears completely! That is a glottal stop. Remember again that this is
not always going to be the case - there are going to be exceptions. For example,
we have a double T here, and oh, it ends with an N and a G, should be okay, right? But we
can't say like cuh-ing, cuh-ing. We don't say that. We say cutting, cutting, once
again with the flap because it doesn't end with a perfect N right there.
Also, obtain, obtain. Here we have a single T; it has a consonant there, so that
could be a problem, and also our emphasis is on -tain here: obtain. Obter, right? Obtain.
And same thing with all of our -tion words. When you have -tion, that doesn't
have anything to do with flapping or glottal stops. That's a whole different
phoneme there. Option. But, cockney speakers of English like Adele, and also
Americans, will say these words: button, kitten, gotten, eaten. And mountain's always
an interesting one too because it has NT. There is a consonant there but we
still say mountain, mountain. I live near the Rocky Mountains. Mountains. That T just
disappears completely. Another word, the word didn't: DIDN'T. This T
disappears completely as well and you get a glottal stop with nothing after it:
didn't, didn't. It's not always the case, but a lot of times when we have the NT
in English, SmallAdvantages, it's not a glottal stop but the T disappears, so this
is kinda like halfway in between those two rules. Don't worry about that too
much. But I said this today and I was thinking, "oh, there's a weird glottal
stop at the end!" Didn't. Didn't. Didn't. Right? And that is the correct
pronunciation of didn't, exactly how a native English - American English - speaker's
gonna pronounce that. One other thing that I wanted to teach you really quick that
has a glottal stop in English is the phrase uh-oh. "Uh-oh" is what a kid, like a
little kid says, like they push all their food off of their.. off of the table, and
they look up and they created a mess, and they say, "Uh-oh!" Right? It's like the
"Oops! Whoop!" You know? Of, like, a mistake. We even say that, just that, you know,
adults will say this in English, like "uh-oh..." like, you're in trouble...
"Uh-oh! I'm gonna have a lot of stuff to clean up," right? And we actually have a
glottal stop - UH-OH - at the beginning of each of these syllables! And that's how
to pronounce that in English: just make that same sound as the À-AULA, but do
that little glottal stop before saying each of these. And there you have the
classic American uh-oh! Uh-oh! You can almost hear and feel your throat clicking
during that. It's fascinating. Anyway, try to practice these words. You will start
to notice it now that you know this rule. So, say pretty regularly; practice the
glottal stop; practice saying kitten, gotten eaten; and practice listening for it. And that
is your accent reduction tip. Hope you enjoyed it!

Most explored buildings within SCP-1678 appear to have been outfitted for the purpose of
extremely dense inhabitation with closely grouped steel bunk beds, a common feature
in any building suitable for the purpose.
Foundation researchers have advised that most explored buildings within SCP-1678 are unfit
for human habitation, due to a high preponderance of mould, damp, and poor construction within
these buildings.
Some buildings are outfitted for other purposes, most notably the SCP-1678 version of the Natural

Instances of SCP-1678-A are extremely resistant to damage, with only high-caliber rounds and
explosive weapons proving sufficient to destroy them.
They are believed to originate from a building named 'Bryson's Home for the Poor',

SCP-1678-B Overview
SCP-1678-B Role: Surveillance.
A.K.A: Eyes in the Sky.
Cases of SCP-1678-B are bio-mechanical constructs which resemble that of a small avian life
form.
They are composed of a central mass of a red organic matter stitched together by a copper
exoskeleton that resembles a spine and wing bones.
The head has been demonstrated to be a small video camera and remnants of feathers and
plastic on their exterior suggests they were once intended to resemble a pigeon.
Cases of SCP-1678-B are known to possess no offensive or destructive capabilities, yet
their ability to track Task Force movements should not be underestimated, as it is currently
unknown if they are capable of communicating with, or summoning cases of, SCP-1678-A. Cases

observation of Foundation activities extremely difficult to stop.

SCP-1678-C Overview
SCP-1678-C Role: Unknown
A.K.A: Wretch Cases of SCP-1678-C resemble a humanoid figure
dressed in rags.
They appear to be of old age and are usually, although not always, female.
They have always been encountered outside the Foundation-held area.
There have been very few direct encounters with the SCP-1678-C entities, and it is currently
unknown how many cases exist or to what level of threat they pose to Foundation security
or safety.
Encounters typically feature cases of SCP-1678-C sitting on a street corner with a begging
dish, whereupon they will attempt to attract the pity or mercy of any Foundation personnel
within their proximity with pleading or begging for food or money.
Supplying a case of SCP-1678-C with food will cause them to begin weeping before dematerializing
with a burst of dense black smoke.
Foundation personnel are currently under instruction to not interact with them.
They are briefly alluded to in an SCP-1678 audio recording: 'Do not pity the Wretch.
Allow them to pay the price of their betrayal for all eternity.
Remember, citizen: on the day UnLondon rises I shall reward the loyal, but traitors shall

SCP-1678-D Overview
SCP-1678-D Role: Food Supply.
A.K.A: 'Dr. Goody's Wonderfood!'
SCP-1678-D is believed to be the primary food source on offer in the event that SCP-1678
receives full-scale occupation.
SCP-1678-D is freely and easily available from steel vending machines installed in virtually
every building or structure outfitted for the purpose of habitation.
The vending machines are upright steel pumps similar in size and shape to that of a modern
petrol pump, containing a slot for the receiving of coins and a flexible rubber hose ending
in a trigger-operated nozzle that will deploy half a liter of SCP-1678-D upon the appropriate
payment.
All vending machines display the legend 'Dr. Goody's WONDERFOOD!' alongside an image
of a smiling child enjoying a bowl of SCP-1678-D and text bubbles advising that SCP-1678-D
costs 'Just a farthing a bowl!', that it 'Contains all the nutrients you need!'
and 'Completely restores health and vitality!'
It has proven to be extremely attractive to cases of SCP-1678-B, C, and an unknown species
of colored mollusc which has been observed feeding on any spillages.
SCP-1678-D is a synthetic starch gel heavily enriched with various minerals, vitamins,
fats and bulking agents.
In addition to this it contains several unknown molecular structures and various engineered
DNA helixes carried within synthetic cellular structures.
It has the same consistency and taste as porridge.
As advertised, it contains all the nutrients necessary for short-term survival.
However, Foundation researchers have advised that over a period of more than six weeks
users of SCP-1678-D will become dangerously underweight due to low levels of fat and protein
within SCP-1678-D and are at strong likelihood of contracting illnesses such as scurvy if
survival is attempted by consuming SCP-1678-D alone.
SCP-1678-D appears to be purposely engineered to manipulate the psyche of regular consumers.
Through a mixture of unknown molecular compounds, regular consumers are more obedient to authority,
are less likely to commit acts of violence, are less likely to engage in sexual intercourse,
have a reduced capacity for fear or panic, and have consistently high morale.
In addition, it also has engineered side effects such as depressive symptoms and headaches
if a subject suddenly abandons consuming SCP-1678-D. Due to the difficulty of creating food within
SCP-1678, SCP-1678-D would serve as the primary food source in the event of large-scale habitation.
Foundation personnel are forbidden to consume SCP-1678-D, even in small amounts.
Not all vending machines produce SCP-1678-D to the same quality with some machines deploying
corrupted forms that have induced severe mental or physical abnormalities or death within

On Sunday, Donald Trump in between tweets about it not be collusion, that it of being
a witch hunt and Mueller, blah, blah, blah, blah.
He tweeted out that he has the best poll numbers of any Republican President every.
Nobody in the history of the United States has ever polled higher within in the Republican
Party itself than Donald Trump is currently polling.
Those poll numbers he's bragging about are the fact that 90% of registered Republicans
are self-identified Republicans, approve of the job that Donald Trump is doing.
And Trump says that those numbers are higher then everybody, including Abraham Lincoln.
He specifically said he is more popular than Lincoln according to these polls, his numbers
are higher, right?
Well, if you consider the fact that Lincoln was assassinated 70 years before presidential
polling began, then no you'd actually still be wrong.
You're an absolute liar.
Not only are you comparing yourself to people who did not live during the time of presidential
polling, which only began during the second term of FDR, but you're still wrong about
your main point that even if we only included Republicans who were alive during presidential
polling, you're still wrong.
George W. Bush hit a high of 99% approval within the Republican Party in January 2002,
a few months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and he had actually hit above 90% within the
Republican Party in the few months before that.
So yeah, you're not the most popular Republican President in history, you're not even the
most popular Republican President since the year 2002, you have nothing to stand on.
Maybe you'll a little upset by the fact that once you branch out from just self-identified
Republicans, a number that is dwindling by the way, that's why it's so high for you and
you go to the general public, we see that you're overall approval rating is 41.9%.
Any other president would consider that a crap number, but you, that is actually your
all-time highest approval in the county.
41.9%, you can't even break 42% in composite polling's of every group in this country.
Nobody cares about your poll numbers man, except for you obviously.
So how about you stop tweeting out the lies and nonsense regarding these numbers that
you don't even understand and maybe you start focusing on how to fix the lies of the millions
of Americans that you have ruined due to your trade wars, your anti-environmental policies,
your horrible FEMA responses to Puerto Rico.
There are a million different problems that you could be talking about, rather than lying
on Twitter about how popular you aren't.

If you've been paying attention to any of the Conservative or Right Wing, and even establishment
Democrat talking heads recently, then you are probably aware of the fact that socialism
is creeping into the United States, and that this country is essentially screwed because
of it.
Now, of course, none of that is true.
We're not screwed.
Socialism is not creeping up here in the United States, though it should be.
We just have a few politicians out there right now who are saying those radical things like,
"Hey, maybe we should have Medicare for all, for citizens of the United States.
Maybe a public option that people could buy into, rather than going to a private health
insurance company that's going to rip them off, or deny them coverage based on preexisting
conditions."
That, according to these wealthy elite, is the socialism that's coming to the United
States.
And here's the thing.
Meghan McCain on The View, is one of the leading voices of this anti-socialism movement.
She got all up in arms last week because she was furious about the fact that her grandkids,
her kids may end up having to grow up in a world where everybody is entitled to healthcare.
How horrible would that be for a man whose father can't even remember how many homes
he owns?
I'm sure we all remember that from the 2008 presidential primaries and debates.
John McCain didn't know how many houses he had.
He's so damn rich, he doesn't know.
And the same is true for people like Meghan McCain, born into this obscene amount of wealth
so they have no concept of reality anymore.
All she knows is that she wants to deny everybody else the same privileges that she has had
since the day she was born because her mother has a ton of money.
Socialism does need to creep into the United States.
But the reason we're hearing all of these scaremongering tactics that it's going to
destroy the country, or that it's completely unaffordable, or that it's going to give us
worse care, is because corporations want us to think that.
The health insurance companies, big pharma, all of those companies have a financial stake
in keeping things the way that they are and not improving them.
Because if we were to get a public option, that could open Congress up to be able to
negotiate drug prices with pharmaceutical companies.
Oh, big pharma doesn't want that.
And if we're buying from the government instead of a place like Blue Cross, or Aetna, or any
of the other ones, they're going to lose money because they're not going to get our dollars
anymore.
And to be honest, employers should be pushing for this kind of plan because it takes the
healthcare burden cost off of them and shifts it to the patient, the consumer, the worker,
and the government that they're paying into.
Seems like a pretty decent trade off to me, right.
And yet, here we are, still having to have these discussions about whether or not Medicare
for all, universal healthcare, a public option, whatever you want to refer to it as.
I know they're all different things, but you hear different things all the time about them.
Whatever you want to call it, we're still having to have the discussion about whether
or not it's viable.
And the worst part of the discussion is when these right-wingers and the establishment,
Democrats, like to talk about the cost.
"We just can't afford it."
I mean, how CNN did an analysis of it about a year and a half ago and they said, "It's
going to cost us $1.4 trillion a year to have universal healthcare here in the United States."
Wow.
That is a lot.
$1.4 trillion a year.
If only there was a way to maybe come up with that money, like I don't know, not giving
the wealthy another tax cut.
Boom.
That just paid for universal healthcare in the United States.
Did you know that?
The cost of the tax cut we just gave the wealthy would have paid for universal healthcare.
And of course, it actually would have been a lot cheaper because that cost of universal
healthcare does not count on the fact that every American citizen that is working would
be paying into it.
You want some more money?
Well, how about we not add $70 to $80 billion to an already bloated military budget each
year.
A $770 to $780 billion per year on the military.
We could probably get by without all of that money going to that, and maybe put that instead,
since we've already paid for universal healthcare with the tax cut, remember.
So now, let's take half that military budget and make debt-free college.
Oh, look.
Everything stays the same, nobody gets screwed out of anything, and everything is paid for
without us having to pony up any extra dollars if we didn't want to.
That's what these people are saying.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Those are the ideas she's putting forward.
Bernie Sanders and so many others all throughout this country, those are the ideas they want
to implement.
Not tax us to hell and back so we could pay for all these socialistic ideas.
Just maybe not give money to the wealthy elite, not continue to feed the military industrial
complex, and if we do those two things, or should I say, stop doing those two things,
we can easily pay for these programs that are going to make the lives of millions upon
millions of American citizens so much better.

was that exciting for you, especially being a girl from Canada.
- For sure, I mean Cirque du Soleil has been part of my life since I was young,
I grew up going to see the shows and
I also wanted to be a circus performer when I was younger.

what are you planning to do here and what kind of research did you do?
- Ok. I don't see the show but I've got, received these kind of pictures
and most of the makeup they are basically red,
orange and yellow like sun-look feeling
but this was kind of you know, very bold and exaggerated so I like,
- Do you sketch out like this every time you do a look?
- Yes but I mean I might use a person so,
maybe the shape of my face are different from this one
so I slightly change to this.
This was more kind of like you know, a round face
and today I'm wearing a,
- You like base tunes your picture here, so.
- That's right. And today I'm wearing this kind of traditional Chinese dress.
It looks like it's gonna work out perfectly, the colour.
- Yeah so I do a little change,
slightly change the way it's like you know the redness or the short eyebrow
it was kind of you know have the Chinese element inside of this
but I will keep the main colour to remain the same
in the same tone so that's what I'm doing.
- That's kind of like incredible, I'm excited to see what it looks like.
- Thank you. But I haven't been, done this for like 5 or 6 years.
- We're looking at each other through the mirror,
has anyone noticed that, we're looking at each other through the mirror.
- Yeah through here. - It's easier.
- Yeah, it was just, bring me back to my uni days,
- Yeah back to the old days. Do you Mac Cosmetics a lot?
- Of course, look I have this pallet.
- I love this pallet, look at these colours.
- Actually this pallet was, I think it was 6 years ago.
I select one of, you know each by each colour by myself.
When I was doing university,
most of my cosmetic they're from Mac and I think,
although I've got the pro card you know we can have a discount.
- Oh yes you got that discount, Mac discount.
- It was still very expensive to me back then but now...
- So you saved your money to buy your Mac Cosmetics.
- You know one by one like I saving for, my money for one month
and I buy one lip pallet, it was just like that you know.
- And now look at you, Mac is inviting you to come and do makeup,
what a full circle, that's awesome.

- Tell me a little bit about why Mac and Cirque du Soleil
work so well together I mean other than they're both amazing Canadian companies.
- Yes, yes so we have Canada in common, - Yeah.
- and we also started the same year, 1984.

- That's really special. - I know so it was kind of meant to be.
- Talk about makeup in a show.
Why is it so important and adds such a layer.
Because the makeup is part of your character.
So makeup gives you a great deal of emotion because it's your face,
- Yes, there's nothing more emotive than that.
And it brings things to another level, right, just that level of colour and art.
- You don't need much to make a statement with makeup.
Now clearly we're making big statements today,
- Right, this is about big statement. - But for real makeup
you don't need much and it just gives you that little zhoosh.
- Yeah and what do you think we're gonna be seeing today?
- God, every colour in the crayon box.
I've seen a lot going on. I've just been walking around going what.
You know and that's the thing with makeup is it's a constant learning,
you're never done.
- Right. Tell me about your, you went to go see O.
- Yes. - I'm sure do you pay attention
to the makeup when you're watching a show, you must.
- It kind of changed my life. - Yeah.
- Because the theatre, the art, the drama, the costumes,
everything I was just blown away.
- It is one of those things you want to take everybody
- Yes! - to see it because
- you want to share - you're like you're not gonna believe
this Cirque show, visually, the makeup,
the costumes, the tricks that they can do.
It's beyond any show that you're ever gonna see.
- No and like it's a circus, no. - No it's not.
- It's an experience, it's an experience. - It's an emotional experience
you don't understand. - It is so hard to explain.

- Ok so for my YouTube tutorials generally I take inspiration from TV
and movie characters so it's very natural on screen makeup
versus, this is super bold but it's super fun
and I think this would be actually really cool
for like a tropical summer look as well.
- So were you nervous at all when you heard that Cirque du Soleil
wanted to work with you and do this event today?
- Yeah, I'm pretty shy, I don't like doing a lot of makeup on the spot
but it's such a cool opportunity and I was so excited
to see this headquarters and travel to Montreal
so it's been a lot of fun so far.
- It's looking good so far, - Oh thanks.
- I don't know why you're worried about it,
- Thank you. - I don't want to jinx you

- So talk about the show that you are modeling your makeup after.
Ok so this is one of their oldest shows, it's a classic Alegria
and I was just drawn to the bold colours
so I love the yellow, the gold and the turquoise

- So I DIYed this little crown very quickly.
- You did this. - I made it super fast
with like a hot glue gun, - Look at that.
- So I'm hoping that it will help bring out the colours.

- That's right.
- So you've beat a lot of faces up in here.
- Yes, yes I did yeah.
So 8 years and it's been quite a ride actually.
A lot of people don't know this but we have to teach the artists their makeup
because everyone has to do their own makeup.
- That's got to be really hard because these artists are you know,
they're training in the gym, they want to be gymnasts
and they want to do all of these amazing tricks
but they don't necessarily go to school to study makeup.
- No that's right. - So you have to teach that all to them.
- That's right, absolutely. Actually some of them have never actually held a brush
in their hands before, so, yeah exactly.
Exactly but you know what, after a few sessions
they eventually learn how to do their makeup
as complex as it could be, as many steps as it can take,
they all eventually learn it. - Awesome.

What If The Dunkleosteus Didn't Go Extinct? - Duration: 4:35.
360 to 380 million years ago, during the late Devonian period, there lived a huge species
of predatory fish that grew up to 20 feet long and weighed up to a ton.
That fish was Dunkleosteus, and it lived far before the dinosaurs did.
The Devonian was a period on planet earth where fish reigned king, and the king of all
kings was Dunkleosteus.
But for the next few minutes, lets imagine a hypothetical timeline where old dunks didn't
go extinct when it did.
What would the cause and effect have been?
That's what we're going to talk about on today's episode of life's biggest questions.
Hello and welcome back to life's biggest questions, the channel that imagines the impossible.
I'm charlotte dobre.

Even though it was basically a giant fish, Dunkleosteus was one of the most terrifying
predators ever to exist.
It kind of looked like a submarine, but in the shape of a fish.
It was armored and had extremely thick, muscly skin that was difficult for its enemies to
puncture.
It also had a distinct shaped mouth, a beak, somewhat like that of a parrot.
It didn't have teeth, but it had an extremely powerful bite and two bony plates, and with
them could bite down at a force of 6 thousand pounds, right up there with the megalodon's
bite force.
Its jaws were so powerful that they killed instantly, and could easily slice through
a large victim and break them clean in half.
experts think that dunkleosteus' mouth was so big, it may have just swallowed its prey
whole.
That being said, it was believed to have been a relatively slow swimmer.
Dunkleosteus Fossils have been discovered all over the world, in north America, in africa,
and in Europe.
Interestingly, it lived at the same time as the Coelacanath (KOALAKANTH), a species of
fish that didn't go extinct and still exists today.
Granted, they are rare, but they can be found off the east coast of Africa near the Comoro
islands, as well as off the coast of Indonesia and in the Indian ocean.
So why did dunkleoseus go extinct and not koalakanth?
Well right around the time of its extinction, oxygen levels in the ocean dropped significantly.
A drop in oxygen means the big fish that needed it wouldn't be able to survive, and neither
would much of the marine life.
This mass extinction killed off between 79 percent and 87 percent of all marine species,
including dunkleosteous. for many millions of years after that, smaller fish flourished
until marine dinosaurs.
At the same time, at the end of the devonian period, that was when the race to the land
began.
Vertibrates began to leave the water.
Like the ancestor of all four limbed vertibrates, tetrapods.
Their fins eventually turned into legs.
In the hypothetical world where dunkleosteous didn't go extinct, the thing that was responsible
for killing it off would not have happened.
Oxygen levels in the world's oceans would have had to remain at high levels for dunkleosteous
to not go extinct and that would have set off a domino effect.
One of the main reasons why a drop in oxygen occurred is because land plants began to flourish.
These land plants created nutrients that got swept up into the oceans, and was then consumed
by algae which multiplied.
But then when the algea died, bacteria took over, and that's what consumed all the remaining
oxygen and caused the end of the Devonian period.
Without this drop in oxygen, dunkleosteus and other species of giant fish would have
continued to thrive, and the rest of marine life would too.
The devonian period saw an impressive array of different species of fish unlike anything
that exists today.
Our oceans would have been extremely lush with vegetation to create the oxygen.
Perhaps if there were no drop in oxygen, the devonian period would have continued on for
even longer, or perhaps, not have ended at all.
There might not have been a race to the land, and eventually that might have meant humans
would not exist.
Sure, there may have been a race to the land at some point, but that wouldn't have occurred
until much later.
If the race to land didn't happen when it did, Who knows how evolution would have been
affected by this, but one thing is for certain, the world's inhabitants would look a lot
different than they do.
Perhaps even aquatic looking in nature.
The earth's oceans would become more and more diverse with every passing millennia.
Perhaps even humanoid sea dwelling beings would have evolved from some types of fish.
You know that dude from The shape of water?
Yeah, kind of like that.
But these humanoids would still have to worry about dunkleosteus, and other large predatory
fish that would not have gone extinct.
But as I previously stated.
Dunkleosteous was not a very fast swimmer, so maybe these humanoids would just have to
pick up the pace a little bit.
Of course, we don't have an exact reason why all of these changes in evolution occurred.
It was likely a number of contributing factors.
But as soon as you change one thing about the course of history, especially as vital
as oxygen levels in the ocean, a strange timeline begins to take shape, one where humans might
not exist entirely.

on the work of the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center,
how this applies to Azure and the global security landscape.
We'll make this real and cover the work
of the intelligence team to protect against
initial attack vectors that can lead to broader exploits.
Starting with, the OS layer with brute force attacks
against RDP or SSH, the app layer,
and SQL brute force attacks
and how we learn from malicious activities
across Microsoft services to enhance protections in Azure.

I'm joined today by Shain Wray from Microsoft's
Threat Intelligence Center, welcome.
- Thanks Matt, great to be here.
- So what specifically does your team work on
and where does that fit in the broader scope
of what Microsoft does in the security in cyberspace.
- Yeah at Microsoft we have thousands of experts
on different groups across Microsoft globally
that are working on security issues.
We're one of those teams that counters threats
across the security landscape.
All the way from potentially unwanted software,
to ransomware attacks all the way through
to hacker groups and nation state groups.
And we use threat intel, we'll use proactive hunting
and reactive investigations to work on this.
We also have a dev team that engineers ways
that we can better detect adversary activity
and investigate and respond to attacks.
- So can you give us an example of the tools
and processes that you might use to detect
and respond to the events?
- Yeah absolutely, so similar to Azure log analytics
that any tenent can have, we go in
and we do a raw data check against
all of our alert information so that we can build out
a better picture and understand the attack.
I'm gonna go ahead and show you what we do here.
So as you can see I'm in Azure security center
and I clicked on the Azure Log Analytics
and I open up the security event,
got a canned query here, and this is just an example,
I've got a time generation date in there.
But you can also set it next to the run button.
I'll go head and click the run button
and once you can see the results up here,
it'll be interesting, you'll see that we've got
a random-named process as the third process listed there.
It's running out of the temp directory,
and in this case what I could do is I could go ahead
and expand and I could add in that time generated
as a scoping command, and then from that perspective
it allows us to understand the scope of the detection
and what's happening around it.
And then the only real difference for this
is really related to what we can do,
and what the tenent can do is we just have
an aggregated view for multi-tenants
and we can query across them
and see all the stuff that's occurring around this time.
- Right so you are using log analytics
and other tools to detect anomalous activity.
- Yeah and not only that, we use log analytics
to improve the details, and improve the remediation steps
in the given alerts, and this helps to better
inform the customers and it helps harden everyone's
security posture in Azure.
- Now there's also an aspect of working broadly
within the industry to understand unknown attacks.
- Yeah, we build threat intel across unknown attacks
and this is based on adversaries
and actors in various regions and industry.
Through security signals that we have inside of Microsoft
and industry intelligence that we gain.
We also share this non-PII data with
a lot of our fellow security investigators.
We share about the attacks,
they do analysis, we do analysis, we go back and forth
between the companies and what this helps us do,
is it helps us build a better picture of the attack sequence
and then we can help protect customers better.
Not just Microsoft customers, but all customers.
But one thing to be aware of is we'd never disclose
any specific enterprise, customer, or personal information
and some really good examples of cross-company collaboration
have been on WannaCrypt and Petya, NotPetya.
Also the vuln discovery work we did on Specter
and Meltdown has been great.
- So your team's analyzing the approaches
and the methods used in the attacks, but how does that work
then feed back into Microsoft products and services?
- Yeah so we have a broad view across geographies
and industries and this helps us to see attack patterns
that occur across them, this is in relation to network
and services and applications
and operating system level details right?
And as soon as we identify an attack we work
with Microsoft teams internally to build mitigation
and this helps us understand what attacks
are occurring across geographies
and potentially to help us understand if an industry's
gonna be attacked we can notify that industry.
- Right, so can we take a look?
- Yeah absolutely!
So what you can see on the screen here
is a heat map of potential attacks,
and what we do as this is related to our alerts,
and what we think attacks may happen.
I click on the MaliciousSQLActivity alert here
and you can see in the heat map, clearly in southern Asia
that we've got a high count there.
If I go head and hover over that,
we can see details about this.
You know the industry and the process names
and the account SQLSERVER being used.
And additionally you can see other processes
that are associated with this,
and that association just helps us identify
and potentially look at other detections.
So if I click on the region then we can see what
other alerts are firing in that region
and that potentially helps us understand
the attack sequences that occurred.
We had a malicious SQL attack,
we had the suspicious command attack,
and then if I click back on MaliciousSQL
I can look at regions and I can see across regions
what's being attacked.
Well here we can see ping and we can see MSSQLSERVER
and again we see the same domain right?
That domain looks to be a domain in Portugal,
looks like a random domain that's created
and based on that we could go look at,
further look at the industries
and we could say alright what industries are impacted
by this also. And across the industries
then we understand better, right,
about this industry is impacted,
it's impacted with these items and from that point
we would go ahead and let industry leaders know
or what's going on with that.
So from that data we build into the new threat intel reports
the what happened, the how the attack occurred,
when, you know, where did it occur?
And we also provide remediations inside of that.
And additionally we've gone in and developed
improved methods in ASC within the investigation path
to help show you exactly what's occurring.
So I clicked into the Azure Security Center here
and this is the investigation path portal
and I can click into a username,
and I can click into a machine
and additionally on that machine I can go ahead
and click right on through to the different alerts
that are associated to that.
Now this is associated to that machine
but what's interesting is I pivoted in from a specific user.
And as I click into the alert,
I get more details on those alerts.
- Cool so can you give us an example
of some of the attack types that you've seen
and how you've worked with the product teams to stop them?
- Yeah in Azure we see plenty
of remote desktop protocol attacks and SSH attacks.
Where the adversary uses brute force on a VM
with remoting enabled typically over port 3389
or 22. They'll try common passwords until gaining access
and from there they can either profit
from the compute of the machine
or use this network access to perform lateral attacks
or recon on other networks.
And the thing about this is that
if you're used to on-premises system security,
you should be familiar with this.
And the same security hardening guys that you use
for on prem, you definitely need
to be using it in the cloud.
- And it's important to note there are many
security configurations that can open the attack service
for attackers so how do you help with that?
- Yeah for sure, so as a result of our work,
there's features that we've put in,
in relation to prevention in the Azure Security Center.
Specifically in the Resource Security Hygiene,
and if we take a look at this you can see,
I'll click into the Azure Security Center again here
and we go into Recommendations
under Resource Security Hygiene.
I'd go head and click through
Remediate Security Configurations
and these are mitigations that you'd want to be
be aware of in relation to the operating system
or whatever you have in your environment.
And this helps prevent the attack originally
that would trigger the alert
and you can see details here about file permissions
and setting at 640 and stuff like that.
And my recommendation is that you check this often
because if you don't check it often there's gonna
be information in there that you need.
- Okay so what kind of things would
an attacker do to profit from that machine?
- Two of the most common uses are to hijack that system
then to either use it as a sender of spam
usually with the intent of delivering a malicious payload.
Additionally we've seen many systems get used
as zombie bitcoin miners lately,
and the other thing about it is, the reason I mention spam
you kinda might wonder why I'm doing that,
is we have a great product called
Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection,
and this protects you against links
and attachments that are malicious.
So definitely wanna look into that.
The other thing that we do is we share
our investigation details with Microsoft Teams,
all the security teams at Microsoft
we share this information
and effectively what that does is allows us to use
the cloud to protect itself.
- Right so if you're using a virtual machine
in the cloud or on prem, you're gonna need
to access those machines remotely somehow.
So how can you ensure that only the authorized
virtual machine owner's requests
make it through to that VM?
- Yeah, so through our work, you know I mean we basically
understand that admins have to connect
and they've gotta work to configure
and troubleshoot their VMs
and they gotta have a way to do that.
So we worked with the Azure team to help reduce
the attack surface and more specifically from the connection
perspective we looked at the time ranges
and IP limitations that you could do with a given connection.
In this case we came up with the Just in Time Controls.
And I'll click into the Azure Security Center
here again, and you'll see under Advanced Cloud Defense
Just in Time VM access.
I'll go ahead and click into recommendations
and I'll choose my own virtual machine
and this, I'll go ahead and enable it.
and you can see that there's ports already configured here
by default, I'll click add, you can add any port you want
if you change the listening port.
I'll put 222 in here, I'll add my own IP address in here,
and then I'll give it a time.
I'll click okay, the one thing to be mindful of here
is make sure you click save, even though it shows up
it's not necessarily saved for that VM.
So then it will default back into
the view for recommendations, click on configured,
at that point I can select my VM
and I can go choose to Request Access for this.
Once I do that I wanna choose the port I want access on,
in this case I'll do 3389 it's a Windows VM.
I go head and click open ports,
and at that point I've got access and I can connect into it.
- Right, so to clarify for people,
unless you're accessing this VM from your public IP address
your IP on your machine, within a specific time window,
you can't access it?
- Oh yeah the first question I get is what if my Admin creds
are popped, how do I know that I'm protected?
Well you should be using multi-factor authentication.
That's easily configurable inside the Azure portal.
- Okay so those are classic but still frequently seen
OS level attacks but what about the application level?
What types of attacks are we seeing here?
- Yeah it's very similar you see the RDP brute forces,
in this case SQL brute force is one of the top items.
SQL brute force is an interesting thing,
it usually requires a SA account to be enabled.
This is something that generally administrators
don't do, but on occasions they'll go
and enable it to do some function on SQL
and then forget to disable it.
Well SQL listens on a network port
and if that network port is not either IP limited
or turned off from public interface
then you potentially could get hit.
Especially if that account is enabled.
So what they do, the attacker does is they'll port scan
all of the ports in Azure
and anything that's listening publicly,
they easily identify that it's a SQL port
that they found and even if you change the port,
they'll still be able to discover that.
And then they'll go head and go through
a brute force process of the password
and once they gain access you know they're almost guaranteed
to be able to gain access.
Especially because people use pretty weak passwords
for SA account, then they'll go
and turn on the XP Command shell,
store procedure at that point.
They have a Command shell on your host system
and now they can run any code you want.
- So how do we help with this?
- Yeah so we through our investigation process
we work with the SQL threat detection team,
the SQL threat detection team has mitigations
and preventions built into Azure paths instances.
But what they didn't have initially was IaaS based instances
and so that's being expanded into the IaaS based instances
and the good example of this
is the SQL threat detection view.
The other thing is we have guidance around
the whole SQL brute force attacks
in blogs that my team has written
and specifically the mitigations are pretty simple:
just disable the SA account,
make sure that it is disabled regularly,
I would change the SA account name to something else,
harden the password for sure,
don't use some simple password easy for you to remember.
Disable the public interface or make sure you absolutely
restrict the IP range and regularly check
for XP Command shell the store procedure's disabled.
- Okay good advice, now how do you go about
investigating attacks in general
and providing alerts for customers based
on your team's research?
- Yes, so let's go back into Log Analytics here
and I can give an example of what we do.
I have a hunting query that I've pasted in here
and I'll go head and run it.
And what this hunting query does is it allows
me to see rare processes that are running
in a given environment.
So you can see here I can see rare processes
these run rarely, I see PS Exec which
is definitely interesting, and we see Tomcat run right after
that from a temp directory so that's interesting.
Tomcat's normal, but not from that directory.
So I would add in that scope for the time,
but I've already created a query here for speed.
I go head and run that, and based on that timeframe
and including PS Exec and Tomcat I can see all the things
that were run, you can see Test User was run here.
And you can actually see Tomcat was also run right,
and so I'd also look at this a little further
I'd scroll down, I'd see okay, we can see Test User
used a bunch, we can also see initially Tomcat
they were trying to do something initially with Tomcat.
At this point I would take the earliest date
and I would take the latest date, so I'll go head
and add those in here to show you the same way
that we would do it normally.
I do have a pre-canned query that we'd run on this.
But just be mindful that you need to scope these queries
as you broaden them, because what you're doing here
is you're gonna increase the amount of data return.
So let me go head and return, run this query,
okay so now what we can see is based on the time range
and broadening out the scope,
we can see WinLogon running, we can see RDPClip running
and these are all in time with when those processes
were running. I can also see I need my password reset
which is not very good, but in that case what that tells me
is there was an interactive logon that occurred
and because there was an interactive logon that occurred.
I'll later probably want to look at the logon data.
Before we do that I would actually wanna see
what occurred even before this,
so I would wanna broaden the scope of the time out further
and go head and run that command.
And what I can see here is as I look through the processes
these are all the ones we saw before, we see RDPclip
and more Tomcat but what's more interesting
is we now see RunDLL running from a temp directory
and beyond that we also see Conhost running
from a fonts directory, so these are very abnormal right?
You know, the dates back on 5/22, let's go see
if there's any logons, maybe this was a brute force.
Let met look at failed logons first.
I got no results for failed logons, so I'd just look
at the regular logons and these are successful.
So these are all the same accounts we saw before,
Test user definitely logged on to this box
and was interactively working on the system
and what we don't see is any before that,
we see ContosoAdmin so I would think that the Admin account
is potentially compromised at this point.
So you know, at this point we go
and we find this new information
and we add it into the detections
and we broaden the impact of that alert
for a customer, we go and share the findings
with our teams across Microsoft.
This helps improve our security posture across Azure
and helps the detections across all of our products.
- Great stuff, well thank you Shain,
that was an awesome walkthrough of the work that you
and your team do to keep everybody safe,
but how can people put the intelligence,
the insights, and the mitigations that your team provides
to work for them?
- Yeah for sure, they need to make sure they
go in and follow the configuration base recommendations
we have and the prevention mechanism.
Additionally I mean I think the piece that
was the most important out of this is we have built-in
investigation tools and Log Analytics
and you can really use this to understand impact
across your environment.
Additionally if you're not sure what queries to run,
or you need help there's blogs out there with many
examples for you to go refer to and look at.
And last but not least, but refer back to ASC Dashboard
all the time, there's broad centralized
real time information there that can help you with alerts
and investigation processes.

Actors Who Died After Filming Horror Movies - Duration: 4:31.
Horror movies have a reputation for being unlucky, and some are even said to be "cursed,"
that's all cute to say, but when those curses lead to actual fatalities, it's not very "cutesy"
anymore.
It's never great when an actor passes away, but on the heels of a horror film the whole
thing feels extra creepy.
Dominique Dunne
Poltergeist is a classic tale of people who live in a house built on a cemetery, who are
haunted by toy clowns, partially eaten by trees, and sucked into intra-dimensional closets.
In other words, it's a clear metaphor for life in American suburbia.
Anyway, the Poltergeist franchise has been linked to so many fatal illnesses, homicides,
and other tragedies that most people have lost count, and the first was Dominique Dunne,
who played the haunted family's teenage daughter.
Dunne was strangled by her ex-boyfriend in 1982, the same year Poltergeist debuted in
American theaters.
Sadly, It was her first and only big-screen role.
Heather O'Rourke
The star of the original Poltergeist franchise was Heather O'Rourke, the adorable little
girl who got sucked into her closet and then ended up inexplicably inside a television
set.
O'Rourke starred in three Poltergeist movies before passing away suddenly at the age of
12, just before the last movie in the trilogy was released.
According to The LA Times, O'Rourke had an undiagnosed "intestinal stenosis," a severe
bowel obstruction that led to infection and septic shock.
Doctors said O'Rourke's condition had been present at birth, so in other words, way before
the Poltergeist curse and probably not supernatural in origin.
Still, the timing was a little bizarre, which is probably what gave the whole curse thing
its legs.
Julian Beck
The scary evil preacher in Poltergeist 2 wasn't quite as iconic as the terrifying, terrifying,
terrifying clown, but he still registered at least a 9 on the creep-o-meter and for
many people is the most memorable element of the film.
"Are you lost sweetheart?"
Julian Beck, who portrayed the preacher, passed away during post-production, thus proving
once and for all that no one should ever be in a Poltergeist movie, ever.
Except he was actually terminally ill during filming the sunken eyes, the yellowish skin,
and the skeletal frame that helped make the character so terrifying weren't special effects,
they were symptoms of late-stage cancer.
Beck was diagnosed with stomach cancer years before Poltergeist 2 premiered.
So his passing was no great surprise to anyone, and therefore not the result of a curse.
Jack MacGowran
The Exorcist is one of the most terrifying films of all time, and it was also associated
with a ton of bizarre incidents, including a fire that burned down most of the set, and
a lightning strike that took out a 400-year-old cross on church grounds - directly across
the street from where the movie was premiering.
According to The Guardian, the film was also associated with the tragic loss of nine people,
from the night watchman to a special effects professional.
Most notably, actor Jack MacGowran, who played Burke Dennings, succumbed to complications
of influenza during the 1973 London epidemic.
That's not an uncommon way to go, but MacGowran passed away right around the time of the premiere
and eight people followed him, including actress Vasiliki Maliaros, who played Father Damien
Karras' ailing mother.
Bela Lugosi
Actor Bela Lugosi was best known for playing horror villains.
He tried to land other roles, but his Hungarian accent was limiting in an era when audiences
thought all central European accents were Transylvanian.
In 1956, Lugosi shot some test scenes for Ed Wood, who you might remember as the Golden
Turkey Award-winning "worst filmmaker in history."

Singer Aaliyah had just finished filming Queen of the Damned when she was involved in a plane
crash in the Bahamas.
According to Billboard, the plane was carrying more passengers than it was certified to carry,
it was overloaded by about 700 pounds, and it was operated by a company that wasn't licensed
in the Bahamas.
The pilot had recently been in trouble for possession of crack cocaine.
Investigators believed the plane crashed simply because there was too much weight, which led
to the pilot losing control.
Ultimately, Aaliyah's untimely death wasn't due to any kinds of supernatural forces, but

BEST Denzel Curry Songs On "TA13OO" - Duration: 10:05.
This wasn't easy. Denzel just dropped one of the best albums of 2018, nearly every track
was great, and I've gotta try to narrow it down to a handful of picks for the best
songs. But I've managed to do it, so today that's what we're gonna talk about. If
you wanna see how my twin first reacted to this album, that will be linked in the description
below, as always we share the exact same thoughts on the album, almost like we're the same
person. But with that being said, this is CDTVProductions, and let's look at the best
songs from Denzel Curry's TA13OO album.
7 - VENGEANCE | VENGEANCE (feat. JPEGMAFIA & ZillaKami)
Going into this track I didn't know this combo would work so well, but oh my god everyone
on here killed it. Straight from the second the hook kicks in, you can tell this track
is just gonna be full of raw energy, and it doesn't disappoint. Denzel comes in with
this maniacal delivery, JPEGMAFIA gives us a great verse, cynical as always and taking
a few more shots at Drake which is also fun, and ZillaKami definitely ramped up the anger
on here a notch or two, literally barking his lyrics by the end of his verse. It's
a brutal track, and it's great.
6 - BLACK METAL TERRORIST | 13 M T
This is easily one of the angriest tracks I've heard from Denzel, and the psychotic
energy he exudes here is insane. Just that contrast between the chorus of this track
and the verses makes it all the more explosive, going from Denzel rapping normally to him
suddenly firing out his aggression over some extremely heavy 808s. It's really fitting
for this to be the final track too, it brings it full circle as the album starts pretty
positively but by this point it's just fully descended into darkness. It's a crazy, energetic
song, and it's one that makes me really wanna see a Denzel concert at some point in
my life.
5 - CLOUT COBAIN | CLOUT CO13A1N
In terms of the message, this could honestly be the most important song on the entire album.
It speaks to the state of the rap industry, where most people have to portray a fake caricature
of themselves to gain some momentary fame. This can be seen everywhere
in rap, with people doing increasingly dumb stuff for some recognition because that's
what people want, but Denzel also touches on the fact that this could be destructive
for the mental state of people chasing that fame. It's a song that really covers the
struggles of fame, trying to achieve it, and struggling to trust people once you have it.
On top of that, it's just a banger that shows Denzel's versatility, as there's
very little rapping throughout this track. This song looks like it's doing big things
for Denzel's career, and he genuinely deserves it.
4 - SUMO | ZUMO
This was the first single released from this project, so I thought I would've cooled
down on it by now, but if anything it's a track I bump even more after the release
of the album. Thematically, this track is almost a more exaggerated and braggadocious
version of Cash Maniac, the track that it comes after. Denzel is just flexing on this
track, whilst preparing us for the harder sound of the tracks on act 2 of the album.
This track doesn't quite reach the aggression levels of Black Metal Terrorist, but it's
still insanely hard hitting. Denzel is right at home on that bassy, ruthless production,
delivering his lyrics in such a bloodthirsty way that it's impossible to not bang your
head when you hear it.
3 - SIRENS | Z1RENZ (feat. J.I.D)
A lot of rappers have given their views on the politics of America right now, and this
is Denzel and JID's track for doing that. Denzel's goes in on both of his verses,
with this amazing metaphor on the first one that essentially represents the relationship
between minorities and America. And then, well then there's JID's verse. He absolutely
murdered this. He did so well that Denzel said he actually went back and wrote another
verse for this song because JID did so damn well, originally the track was just JID's
verse and Denzel's last verse. He basically makes the entirety of his verse
an extended metaphor, comparing America to a girl, and that's great because it means
you can go through his verse and look at every line to see how it applies to this metaphor.
On top of that, his flow is just crazy and he has one of his fastest verses on here (lemme
know if you wanna see a video on that). It's always interesting for me to hear songs about
the state of America because as you can tell, I don't live there, and that's what
this track delivers.
2 - BLACK BALLOONS | 13LACK 13ALLOONS
This song really stood out to me, as it's pretty much one of the most upbeat sounding
tracks on here, and I think it really exemplifies the "Light" segment of the album. Don't
get me wrong, the topic Denzel is talking about still has dark tones to it as the song
is all about pain, the emotion that the black balloons represent. However the song does
display hope that these black balloons can pop, and eventually your pain will pass, so
there is a very uplifting side to it, which is really amplified by the lighter production
and beautiful chorus. It's a song that definitely sounds like it could have a lot of commercial
appeal whilst still talking about serious topics and issues. Not to mention, we have
a great guest verse from GoldLink, who really fits in on this beat with his smooth, melodic
tones. I just really love the symbolism of this track, and I could see it becoming one
of the most popular from the album.
1 - PERCS | PERCZ
And just like Sumo, I thought this song might've lost a bit of its impact by the time the album
dropped cause I'd heard it so much, but it really hasn't, it's still one of the
best Denzel songs overall in my opinion. The song acts kind of like an analysis of the
hip hop scene in 2018, with Denzel speaking on drug use, meaningless rap songs and rappers
becoming a slave to their labels. He makes it clear in the second verse though that he's
not necessarily trying to hate on these rappers, he's just saying what he doesn't do. It's
got great flows and an incredibly catchy rapped hook, making sure it's a song that'll
stick in your head. It's a great look at what mainstream rap is like right now, and
Denzel's thoughts on it. I absolutely loved it when it dropped, and it's a song that
just isn't getting old for me. And that's why this song is my favourite
from TA13OO by Denzel Curry.

You know the jingles, you've piled up their bologna, and you've downed their hot dogs.
And some of you — at least, according to The LA Times — even named your children
after the kid in the commercials.
But how much do you really know about Oscar Mayer?
Here's the untold truth of the company behind that famous Wienermobile.
"My bologna has a first name, it's O-S-C-A-R.
My bologna has a second name it's M-A-Y-E-R"
Oscar's a real dude
Just like Duncan Hines, Oscar Mayer was a real person.
He was born in Bavaria in 1859, and arrived in the U.S. when he was 14.
After apprenticing with a butcher, he later leased the Kolling Meat Market in Chicago,
and partnered up with his brothers.
Since the Windy City had a growing population of German-American families, their sausages
were a success.
By the beginning of the 20th century, they had 43 employees, eight delivery-wagon drivers,
and supplied nearly 300 stores in Illinois and Wisconsin.
The Wienermobile: size matters
This iconic vehicle has been around since 1936.
And while it's always looked like a giant hot dog, part of the original concept has
fallen to the side of the road.

The Wienermobile was originally manned by a little person hired to dress as chef "Little
Oscar."
Joe White, who played the part for 20 years, told the LA Times,

Other famous "Little Oscars" include Meinhardt Raabe and Jerry Maren, who both achieved fame
as Munchkins in The Wizard of Oz.
Bologna for the masses
When you think of Oscar Mayer, you probably think of bologna, first.
But according to Eater, this weirdly-textured meat was around long before Oscar Mayer.
It has roots in 1660's Italy, under another name, mortadella.
It's not clear when it crossed the Atlantic, but it was definitely popular during tough
times in the U.S., like the Depression and World War II.
Oscar Mayer then kept bologna trending for decades, with their distinctive vacuum-sealed
packaging.
Hot dog, it's a drone!
In 2017, Gizmodo unveiled Oscar Mayer's new hot dog delivery system, the WienerDrone.
With a flight time of only 15 minutes, and the capability of carrying just one hot dog
at a time, the drone was impractical… but super cool.
WienerDrone came just two years after an adaptation of the Wienermobile: WienerRover.
The remote-controlled, off-road vehicle got so much press that they introduced a limited-release,
mass-market version shortly after.
Happier animals
The meat industry remains one of the most controversial branches of modern food supply,
and in 2014 Oscar Mayer's Animal Welfare Team announced they would be partnering with the
University of Wisconsin for a program designed to teach students about everything from assessing
animal care to finding sustainable ways to improve the industry.
The partnership ultimately focused on the creation of several new courses at the university,
along with public resources on animal welfare issues.
Everyone's a wiener
In September 1962, songwriter Richard Trentlage heard about a contest Oscar Mayer was sponsoring,
and wrote the now-famous jingle, in about an hour.
"Oh, I'd love to be an Oscar Mayer wiener, that is what I'd truly like to be…"
But it wasn't an overnight sensation.
According to Digital Music News, Oscar Mayer spent a whole year consulting with focus groups
and debating about which contest submission was going to be the big winner before settling
on Trentlage's catchy tune.
It went on to be one of the longest-running jingles ever, finally getting retired in 2010.
Trentlage passed away in 2016, but there's no doubt his song will live forever.

Columbus, Ohio recently released its annual water quality report, and our Water Nerds
dug through it so you don't have to!

Let's start with Chromium 6.
Chromium 6 is a highly toxic metal that is currently unregulated by the EPA.
Chromium 6 pollution is associated with metal processing, tannery facilities, chromate production,
stainless steel welding, and pigment production.
Chromium 6 levels were detected as high as 0.35 parts per billion in certain treated
surface water sources.
These levels are 17 times higher than the concentration determined to have a negligible
impact on cancer risk.
EPA has acknowledged that Chromium 6 is a known human carcinogen through inhalation,
but is still determining its cancer potential through ingestion of drinking water.
Next is disinfection byproducts or DBPs.
DBPs are formed when chlorine-based disinfectants are routinely added to the water supply to
kill bacteria, and react with organic matter.
They are split into two categories: Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and Haloacetic Acids-5
(HAA5).
Two of the three treatment plants had elevated concentrations of DBPs.
Concentrations for Haloacetic Acids at the Dublin Road Water plant averaged 29.4 parts
per billion and reached concentrations as high as 36.1 parts per billion.
Concentrations of trihalomethanes averaged 40.2 parts per billion but reached concentrations
as high as 61.6 parts per billion.
At the Hap Cremean Water Plant, haloacetic acid concentrations averaged 45.3 parts per
billion and reached concentrations as high as 55.5 parts per billion.
Trihalomethane concentrations averaged 53 parts per billion, and reached concentrations
as high as 86.5 parts per billion.
For a bit of perspective the Maximum Contaminant Level of trihalomethanes is 80 parts per billion
and 60 parts per billion for haloacetic acids.
Disinfection Byproducts are a category of emerging contaminants which means they have
been detected in drinking water but the risk to human health is unknown.
