*Please read the video description for the introductory notes*
Welcome to the Playthrough of Avalon Code! As you start the game, a video introduction plays (can be skipped with the Start button)
The video shows a few sequences which hold no particular meaning to a new player; some characters of the game are shown
but central to the video is a book with an eye on it and words with no apparent meaning, which is central to the story we're about to follow
Enjoy the video if you like, or skip to its end at about 2:00
Side note: 'Avalon' is the name of the fantasy world we'll be playing in, while 'code' refers to the contents of the book (more on this later)
At the end of the video (or after you've skipped it), the title screen of the game appears and waits for player input
You may touch the bottom screen or press any face button to make the Main Menu appear
The Main Menu only provides 1 option at the start (and just 2 afterwards), 'New Game', which lets us play from the start of the story
Let the title screen stay for a bit and the game will start playing the intro video again. Jump to 3:50
Picking 'New Game' makes the character selection screen appear: it's the character we'll be playing as for the whole game!
Our choice is very limited: either the boy or the girl we saw in the intro video. There are no differences in the main story for the two, but some side stuff differs
We aren't given any information about these two young ones aside from a few pictures showing them wielding weapons
The first time I played Avalon Code I picked the girl, so for this Playthrough I'll be playing as the boy
Side note: to make a choice, tap the 'boy' or 'girl' box, then tap on 'Select' and confirm with the 'Yes' option on the pop-up dialogue
If you change your mind, pick the 'No' option to get back to the selection screen; select 'Return' to go back to the title screen
You may also use the directional buttons to select your options, using the A button to confirm and the B button to cancel (not 100% sure about the latter)
Another introductory video plays now (I don't know if this one can be skipped), and it has a decidedly more grim tone...
...Someone's saying the world's about to be destroyed and created anew. We're about to learn more about this
Side note: the narration suggests this destruction and recreation thing has been going on for a while, but we aren't told any details in the whole game
The scene now shifts to our character, lying on a grass field near what looks like a black stone monolith. This is how most of the game looks...
...It's a fully polygonal rendition, characters and background, but the view is fixed (it only shifts in cutscenes)
Side note: Marvelous Entertainment is mentioned in these credits; it's the producer of the original Japanese version of the game...
...Rising Star Games published the European and Australian version (the one we're playing), while XSEED Games did for North America
Our character has just caught what looks like a red bookmark that fell from the sky. Let's see what happens next
Some people who look like soldiers are approaching, and an ominous music plays, so they're certainly not just a local patrol
The book we saw in the intro has just emerged from the black monolith, and one of the soldiers seems to have taken notice
Side note: most of the cutscenes in the main story are voiced, and written dialogue is also displayed on the top screen
Most of the other dialogue is only text, though, with some voiced lines here and there
It seems these soldiers aren't ordinary people, but some kind of monsters in disguise. This one looks like a Minotaur from Greek mythology
From the red bookmark a wall of flames erupts, and this little guy appears, seemingly defending our character, now the holder of the Book of Prophecy
This is where the action in this Action RPG starts! on the bottom screen the Book of Prophecy is shown, open on one of its pages
While the player's using the book, the action (shown on the top screen) stops, and Rempo, the Fire Spirit we've just met, floats about...
...giving the player advice or just being impatient. Just follow Rempo's instructions for now, we'll go into the details of how the Book of Prophecy works later
We can now control our character: make him walk with the directional arrows, press the X and Y buttons to make him swing his swords
He's now wielding swords on both hands: X makes him swing the sword on his right hand, Y on his left; there's no real difference in speed or power...
...but alternating the two makes him chain one swing after the other (up to 4 initially) and finish with an attack that will knock his opponent down
Our character will always attack in the direction he's facing, and occasionally take a step forward with each swing
Keep hitting the monster and it'll eventually fall and disappear in a puff of smoke (most enemies in the game do)
Just be careful not to let the monster hit your character too many times: the HP gauge (red branch-like indicator) shows we only have 5 HP...
...which means we can only take 5 hits from the monster before our character is defeated; most enemies deal 1 HP of damage at the start of the game...
...but this will change eventually, so it's important to learn to avoid enemy attacks by moving at the right time
Now I can finally stop referring to him as our character ^^ You can name him however you like, but the game provides a default name, Yumil, and that's what I'll be using
You can tap or select the characters for the name you want to enter, tap Back to delete the last character, tap Space to enter a blank space
There's an 8-character limit for the name. Tap on Select when done. Side note: the default name for the girl is 'Tia'
Side note: apparently we can't use the power of the book on ordinary people, just to fight monsters. Also, we were prompted for a choice (select with the directional arrows and A button)...
...but all it does here is change Rempo's dialogue; we'll have to run away regardless. Other choices in the future may have more significance, but most of them won't change the story at all
Looks like those were invading soldiers; we'll be told about the current political situation as we go on with the story, for now let's worry about the book
Oh, I forgot to mention: Yumil is never given any dialogue (he has some voiced lines and says the things you pick, but that's it)...
He's supposed to be just an avatar for the player, although he often shows emotions in scenes and actually has a personality; it's a bit weird, but this style is very common in Japanese games like this one
Side note: it's funny how Yumil takes the revelation that the world's about to end so nicely, and it's also funny how the player isn't even supposed to think about how saving the world from destruction could be done...
...The player's supposed to assume the only salvation is from the new world s/he's supposed to help create, and the game is so light on details about it that it's almost jarring
But there's simply no time to ponder about this: Rempo's a bit hot-headed - you may have noticed - and prefers to go straight to action...
...For now just follow Rempo's directions. We'll go into more details about the book in the next video. You can use the book either by tapping on the bottom screen...
...or by pressing the Start button, which opens the last page of the book, where you can save your progress...
...This is a very long game, so I suggest to use the save page often (press Start or tap on the DATA bookmark)
Side note: the story is split into 11 Chapters; at the start of each one some lines from the prophecy of the destruction of the world are shown
In the Data page you may tap the SAVE box and select Yes to save your progress; you can also see how long you've been playing, your current location on the map...
...and the points your Book of Prophecy has accumulated (more on this later). If you want you can tap To Title to return to the title screen (doing so without saving will make you lose your progress!)
