The continuing education and community development division of
Pitt Community College provides workforce development, training and
personal enrichment courses for adults from the community, business and industry.
We strive to offer a diverse range of programs and
courses to meet the particular needs and interests of all citizens of Pitt County.
Our programming provides opportunities to upgrade occupational skills and
to acquire new skills.
Classes are held on-campus and at various off-campus facilities,
such as public schools, community buildings,
churches, civic centers, industrial plants and fire stations.
We are committed to enhancing the quality of life and education to the citizens of
Pitt County by supporting the global workforce, as well as the local community.
Our mission is to educate and empower people for
success in life and in global workforce through industry,
small business, occupational and community service training.
>> Our continuing education department, it's one of the workforce development
engines of eastern North Carolina and particularly, obviously, Pitt County.
It is a flexible, dynamic organization that works with students and
employers to really prepare businesses to expand,
and grow and attract new businesses to Pitt County and eastern North Carolina.
We're extremely fortunate that we have such a talented group of program
directors and instructors that really do work with both students, and
business and industry to make that department such a success.
We firmly believe here at PCC that a well-trained,
well-educated workforce makes for a successful community.
>> With community outreach, you have to think about the word, community.
That's exactly what I do.
I inform the community on everything that's going on at PITT Community College
from one end of the college to the other.
We want to make sure that you know and understand, and
that you're informed about everything that we have to offer at the community college.
We're looking at people who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own.
We're looking at homemakers, we're looking at veterans, we're looking at young
people, which that's the program, Youth At Work, which helps them to go to work.
We solicit employers out there to help them work, to teach them how to work.
For anybody out there, regardless of your age,
regardless of what you're trying to do, you probably need to start here at PCC.
>> Our department has three programs, major programs, that fall under us.
The first one is customized training program.
This particular program looks at and
addresses the need of the business and industry that are within Pitt County.
We go in and we assess their trainings to see what those particular needs are and
how we can help them fulfill that.
The main thing is, again, most of those businesses and
industries that qualify, they get either free training or greatly reduce training.
So we have a lot of resources in order to meet the needs
of that business and industry.
The next hat, so to speak, that I wear relates to the CRC,
career readiness certificate, now really being called the NCRC,
national career readiness certificate.
It is a portable, nationally recognized
credential that is provided through ACT WorkKeys.
And so we also make it available to the general public.
This is a great program, Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.
This particular program focuses on the individual, if you would.
It targets the unemployed, the underemployed, the dislocated worker.
And there is a component of the WIOA that looks at our youth our youth at work.
And so it has a lot of dimensions where it's able to reach out,
find people where they are, and help them.
It's just a beautiful partnership with the employer who needs someone, the employee
who needs a job, WIOA who is in the business of making the workforce stronger.
>> The healthcare field is one of the largest and
rapidly growing job sectors in the workforce.
And because of it, it translates into endless opportunities for
individuals to find jobs and possible careers.
The aging population has been a primary reason for
the growth spurt of this field in the past couple of years.
As the baby boomer generation ages, there will be an increasing number of people
who will need special, age-related care.
Furthermore, in the past couple of years, we've seen more and
more people are becoming health conscious.
They wanna remain fit and take care of themselves.
They make regular checkups and appointments with their doctors
to ensure that they stay fit and leading a healthy lifestyle.
Due to these reasons, the healthcare industry is flourishing and
it needs more health professionals.
Here in continuing education, we offer the Nursing Assistant I & II course,
Nurse Aid Refresher, Medication Aid, EKG Monitor Tech,
Phlebotomy, Pharmacy Technician training, and CPR courses.
As you can see, there are a plethora of opportunities in continuing education that
will assist you in developing your career, or for you to stack credentials and
certifications to your existing resume.
In healthcare, there's something for everyone.
>> We have a unique program in that we offer some courses that transfer to
both the curriculum side and the continuing education classes.
The basic law enforcement training academy is a 20 or 29 week class that certifies
an officer to work as a law enforcement officer in the state of North Carolina.
About a semester's worth of those classes also transfer toward a two-year degree
program, so it's a great way to get some curriculum classes during that program.
Additionally, we offer the detention officer certification program.
That is about a five and
a half week course that certifies those students to work as a detention officer,
in a detention center or jail, within the state of North Carolina.
It's a really quick way to get your foot in the door and begin a career in
law enforcement, to have benefits and a good salary in a pretty quick order.
Additionally, we offer in-service training for law enforcement officers.
Those range from classes that they're required to have annually to
maintain their certification, and also includes management, leadership,
training officer kind of programs, things that have enhanced their career, and
helped them throughout their profession of law enforcement.
Each one of our programs is a little different.
For the in-service training, most of the departments arrange those with
the employees, or they can go to our website, pccpublicsafety.com.
That gives them a count of our training classes.
Additionally, we have websites available, both on the con ed and
the curriculum side, and on Facebook, that they can research and find the information
on the basic law enforcement and detention officer certification classes.
Any of our staff will be glad to answer questions, explain the application
process, and get you started in a career in law enforcement.
>> The fire and emergency services training division offers both fire,
rescue, EMS and emergency management training.
We offer this both to paid professionals, and also volunteer professionals
throughout our community, and even throughout the eastern part of the state.
In the fire training, we offer an initial certification academy once a year,
which is an 8 to 5, Monday through Friday,
six-month long academy, which gives certifications in firefighter one and two.
Also basic EMT, driver operator, and technical rescue certifications.
We also offer, mainly to our volunteer departments,
fire training throughout the year.
We do those both here in class and also in those department in each community.
A bulk of certification training has certainly been through the college, but
even non-certification training, just to keep up their continuing ed hours on
different topics on fire, are done throughout.
As far as EMS, we do inital, emergency medical technician training.
And we do all con ed for EMS professionals from EMT through paramedic.
And so there's annual requirements for continuing education they must meet.
We offer those both traditional in classroom here on campus.
We offer some of those in various departments through our county.
And we do a lot of Moodle offering, which allows online, easier access for
the person that has a weird work schedule or works a lot of hours.
So many, many different ways of both our fire and EMS training.
In our emergency management training,
we offer training topics that are needed, per se, by the agencies in which we serve.
And we also host the North Carolina Emergency Management Eastern Week School
here at Pitt Community College.
And that brings in usually around 150 students from all over our state
coming in to Pitt Community College for emergency management.
If a person wants to receive training in any of the programs that we offer,
there's multiple avenues that we are advertised in.
One is the Pitt Page, which is seen in the newspaper, and
also on our continuing education website.
We have a training calendar online under the Pitt Community College fire and
rescue EMS training that has a calendar specific to what it is that we're doing.
If you are a part of a fire or EMS department,
it is a fee-waived class traditionally, so you're able to just sign up for
the class and then get that information and take it.
If you're not associated with any department, then you just come in,
register for the class here at our continuing ed building,
and we put you in those classes wherever they are.
>> We're responsible for four programs here in continuing education.
The first one is the small business center.
We're tasked with working with anyone in Pitt County who owns a business and
wants to make it better, or who wants to start a business.
We have, on average,
about 130 free seminars a year on all sorts of business topics.
How to start a business, how to write a business plan, how to get a loan for your
business, and various human resources and financing and marketing topics, as well.
We also offer free, confidential, one-on-one counseling.
The second program that we're responsible for is the HRD program.
That stands for human resources development.
We help people create resumes, we teach them interview skills.
And then we also teach some of those soft skills that it takes for
you to keep that job once you get it.
The third program that we're responsible for
is the entrepreneurial education program.
That's where we have our certification and licensure programs.
So if you want to be a barber or cosmetologist; real estate agent,
insurance agent, we have those licensure programs.
And then we also have the continuing education programs for the real estate and
insurance agents.
One of the remarkable things about that program is the price.
If you're interested in becoming a barber or a cosmetologist, we can get you in and
out of the Pitt Community College programs for $2,000.
So it's an incredible educational value.
You don't come out with all these students loans that you have to repay.
It takes the same amount of time.
And these programs are consistently rated as some of the best programs in
the state for those licensure programs.
The fourth program that we're responsible for here in continuing education is
the community service lifestyle classes that we teach.
Things like motorcycle safety, driver improvement, arts and
crafts classes, music classes, creative writing classes.
And, again, those are all priced very competitively,
if you look at what it would cost you to take private instruction in those things.
>> As a comprehensive community college in North Carolina,
Pitt Community College has a long history of continuing education,
connecting us with business and industry in the area, and informing our short-term,
non-credit training, as well as what we do in the credit programs.
We're very proud of what we've accomplished and
we look forward to even more development in the future.
>> It is often said that our continuing education and
community development division is the best kept secret.
And we no longer want to be a secret.
So please reach out to us, and let us know how we can help you.
