The trailer opens up with a message about diving
and what looks like the Dive sections from Dream Drop Distance
Now, before you get too upset, this doesn't mean that Dive Mode is back
It's probably just a set piece to show off how nice the world looks
We then see Sora do a couple attacks into a Blitz Finisher
which is then canceled into the first form in this trailer.
But before we get into that, I want to point out the first difference between the Japanese and English version of the trailer
In the Japanese version of the trailer, instead of doing a Blitz finisher into the new Form
Sora does what looks like a Faith Finisher instead
I might be wrong, but I believe this is a brand new Finisher to the franchise
and I felt like it was worth pointing it out
since a lot of the stuff in this trailer is derived from Dream Drop Distance
Anyway, much like Drive Forms, these new Forms change Sora's outfit and modify his combos
But, unlike Drive Forms, they're on a timer and don't take away any Party members.
Following the transformation, Sora goes into a flurry of punches
The name of this move is "Counter Slash" in English, and "Revenge Slash" in Japanese.
The implication seems to be that it's some sort of retaliation move, but we don't get to see what triggers it in this trailer.
Following Counter Slash, we get a good look at the way Combos are in this Form.
Which is quite similar to Riku's Fire Raid Link Style in Dream Drop Distance
We then get to see that these Forms not only modify Combos, but also the Shotlocks that you can use.
The next shot features a new Form and a new Keyblade- or- an old Keyblade, rather.
This pretty much confirms that Forms are tied to the Keyblade that you use
The Olympus Keyblade gives you CounterShield,
The Kingdom Key gives you Second Form,
And from earlier footage we can see that the Form with the guns is called TwoShoot Blaster and corresponds to the promotional Keyblade.
Moving on to Second Form, it seems to be based on the abilities Sora had in Kingdom Hearts II
We can see Sora perform a Hurricane Blast into an Aerial Finish and then a Magnet Burst
I would normally find this exciting but 90% of Aerial Finish completely whiffs in the English footage
Anyway, one thing I found interesting about this clip
is that the triangle prompt seems to change depending on what stage of the combo you are in
We can see that before the Hurricane Blast connects, the triangle prompt reads "Stun Impact"
after it connects, it reads "Sonic Blade"
and finally, during Magnet Burst, it reads "Ars Arcanum"
I guess this is as good a time as any to point out that Hercules is in the Party at the same time as Donald and Goofy
While this could mean that four member parties are a thing in Kingdom Hearts III,
I feel like I have to mention that the games have forced us into parties before
such as fighting with Zack, Hercules or Mickey in Birth by Sleep, despite there not being a Party system in that game
Anyway, Sora Goofy-Torpedoes up into the sky and drops a Goofy bomb on these Heartless
While this could be a limit, I feel like it's rather short compared to the Limits in Kingdom Hearts II, or even the Link Attacks in Dream Drop Distance
It also doesn't consume any of the gauges on the HUD at the moment
This could mean that this attack isn't a Limit, but a situational move that you can use every now and then
It could also mean that Limits haven't been fully implemented into the game yet, and so they don't use any MP
While we're on this topic, I feel like I have to point out that the bottom option of the Menu reads "Link" instead of "Limit" or "Drive"
The concept of Links between people has been becoming more relevant with every installment since Birth by Sleep
So it could be a matter of theme over legacy and they're renaming Limits into Links
Or it could simply be a multi-tab menu, much like it was in Kingdom Hearts II
We cut to our old friend, the Rock Titan, where Sora uses Magic for the first time in this trailer
This triggers "Za" tier Magic as triangle commands
Now, I hate killing the buzz, but this isn't a new tier of Magic that we're going to be using
The Japanese version of this trailer gives this Magic the "Gun" tier
This is the same tier of Magic that Aqua uses in the Japanese version of 0.2
For some reason, the English version of 0.2 localized these spells as "Ja" tier spells
"Gun" tier spells were already localised as "Za" tier spells in the English version of Dream Drop Distance
with "Stopza" and "Zero Graviza"
So it was most likely a localisation slip-up in 0.2
and they're just fixing it in Kingdom Hearts III...sorry
Another noteworthy thing in this section of the trailer is this move that Sora does
This move has shown up in previous trailers and seems to be able to be performed from an idle state
More on this in my final thoughts
This next section of the trailer seems to focus on expanding on things that they've already shown
We get to see more magic in action,
What looks like a combo finisher from the CounterGuard Form
And a few more of Second Form's moves
Here we can see that Stun Impact can be used from a neutral state
, what looks like the Dream Drop Distance of Ars Arcanum,
A combo into a launcher, which in case you weren't convinced from the multiple finishers,
pretty much confirms combo modifiers
Then finally a Sonic Blade
Worth mentioning is that the move Sora uses to combo into the launcher is different in the Japanese version of the trailer.
Finally, we get some more footage of Sora running up the Rock Titan Mountain
There's not much going on that's new in this part of the footage
but I think it's worth pointing out that Sora seems to use a regular attack out of Flowmotion
Regarding the teaser, I think it could be anything. It definitely seems machine themed
So I can see it being inspired by some gadget from Big Hero 6
It also seems to have a thruster so it could also be inspired by a Solar Surfer from Treasure Planet
Some other people have been saying that it looks like a drill from Atlantis
I don't see a drill there but, hey, I'll take their word for it
But it could also be something completely different. Wreck it Ralph? or some other-thing
Now, a lot of people have been saying that they removed Attraction Flow
that they didn't feature Attraction Flow in this trailer, so they removed it.
I think that's a bit of a leap to make
Nomura said that Attraction Flow is dependant on the World you're in
So I figured they were like, "we've already shown this rollercoaster ride a million times,
there's no need to show it again".
It could also be that they removed it, but I don't think that's necessarily the case
Personally, if they did, I wouldn't be too upset.
I thought it was a bit too much
The cups were fine, but the boat and the rollercoaster ride were a bit *too* much
So I wouldn't mind if they got rid of it, but I don't think that's necessarily an appropriate conclusion to reach right now
As far as the move I mentioned earler
I think it's peculiar, because it doesn't look like a regular combo, it looks like a special move
And he just does it from idle; he doesn't combo into it, he just does it.
And there's some other ones that they've shown in previous footage
And I know a lot of people won't like this, but I think something akin to the Command Deck
Might be coming back
I'm not saying that's necessarily the case
Just food for thought
It just looks like some moves there
would not feel natural to use raw, unless there was a special command to use them.
Personally, I'm cautiously excited, I hope half of my attacks don't whiff
Please, Osaka, fix that.
I also hope not too much of the stuff in previous games is recycled
A lot of this stuff seems to be from previous games and I'd like to feel like I'm doing new things more often than not.
And I'm excited about the prospect of Keyblades giving you Forms, because these games have a lot of Keyblades
Kingdom Hearts II has a shitload of Keyblades
So thinking that every single Keyblade is going to give you a different Form is exciting
I was going to make an analysis video on the previous trailers
To prepare for Sony's conference but hey, fuck me.
This trailer comes out the day before
Whatever!
I guess I can't do that now
I guess I'm kinda late to the party anyway
Let me know what you think
Be excited
