Hello, Alexander here from AGS IT-partner
When you choose a backup system for your data, there are 7 points
Which you should think about before you get started and buy a backup service.
Start by asking yourself how long you can be without access to your data or IT services,
Before you will notice it on your earnings, on increasing costs or daily operations towards your customers.
This time factor is important to you when planning your backup solution,
This is the time your backup solution is allowed to use to get back all the services.
How much does it cost you in terms of lost revenue or increased costs.
For example - How much does it cost you if all your employees do not get the job done. and just sitting there without doing anything
Or if you're not able to bill your customers because the ERP system is down.
What do you lose if you do not have access to customer data such as
Offers, drawings or project documents that you need to deliver to your services to your customers.
Another thing that's important is to think about is the time it takes to get back up again
If you need to hire consultants to set up things again because the systems are too complex
Or the backup you have taken only includes the data but not the actual setup of the system.
Such work can quickly become expensive and time consuming,
So that costs and losses will be greater the longer time that goes before you get your systems back up.
Eg. It may take longer if you need someone to set up the operating system on the server
or you must have the financial system installed and set up new databases.
Than what it would to just restore a single document.
Most of us usually use backup to restore data when something has been deleted or moved by accident.
As a result of a human error or someone having a minor accident.
In these cases you should demand that the backup solution has a simple system to restore files and folders if they have been deleted.
Next on the list is hardware failures, system failures and virus attacks.
If you have a server like this in the room, you may be victim of failing components that bring down the entire server.
And if you just keep it running for year after year without maintanance, the likelihood that you will experience a failure will be high.
if you do not replace components or entire servers on a regular basis.
Some also experience System failures due to. Updates gone wrong,
Or virus attacks that encrypt and lock down your data files.
Here's a sure copy / backup locally and a cloudbackup out of the house the way to "survive" such an event
The one that strikes the hardest is the risk of theft, fire or other disaster where you lose all data locally.
When you lose server and local backup at the same time, you are completely dependent on having a good cloudbackup.
Which allows you to get your data somewhere else to get back in the quickest possible way.
When you select a local backup device, it is advisable to place it elsewhere in your business
away from the server if you have the opportunity.
Then you spread the risk if something happens in the room where the server is located, such as a water leak.
Or that the thief also steals the backup device with him because it is connected to the server.
You should also think about how long you need the backup solution to store copies of your data.
Do you need to retrieve a file that was deleted 5 years ago?
Or hold copies for example 6 months, 1 year, 2 years or 3 years,
This also has something about how much space you need to save your backup in the cloud.
Keep in mind that when you stipulate backup storage in the cloud,
The systems will often have multiple copies and editions of your files so you should take into account
At least 50% to 100% more storage on backup than what you have on your server today.
Also, remember that you should have a report about the backupstatus and if the backup has run successfully.
And establish a routine where you check and have control over whether the backup actually works and runs.
Check if your IT provider may also have a service to help you with this.
