it� IT�S a relationship that rocked the British
royal family, and decades after it started, the Duchess of Cornwall, has spoken about
what it was like to be in the eye of the storm.
In an interview with The Mail on Sunday�s You magazine, Camilla Parker-Bowles was extremely
candid about her royal affair during his marriage to the late Princess Diana.
When news of their relationship broke in the 90s, Parker-Bowles and Charles were vilified
by the press, with the attention in both of their lives increasing tenfold.
�I couldn�t really go anywhere,� she told the publication.
�It was horrid.
It was a deeply unpleasant time and I wouldn�t want to put my worst enemy through it,�
she added.
The Duchess of Cornwall married her first husband Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973, and
the couple have two children, Tom, 43, and Laura, 39.
While Camilla told the publication she was made to feel like a prisoner in her own home,
the Duchess said her children became used to the attention.
�The children came and went as normal � they just got on with it � and so did great friends,�
she said.
�The paparazzi used to follow us everywhere and lurk around like spooks,� her son Tom
added.
�We used to keep binoculars in my mother�s bathroom, and one of us would look out every
morning to see how many paparazzi were hiding in the bushes.
We could tell by the flash of sun on their camera lenses.
At the peak [of interest in Camilla], there would be half a dozen hiding outside.
It seemed entirely normal.�
Royal sources struggle to agree on when exactly Prince Charles and Camilla began their affair
however most claim they briefly dated in the 1970s before rekindling their romance in the
1980s.
Prince Charles and Diana married in 1981.
The affair between Camilla and Charles didn�t become public knowledge until 1992 when the
book Diana: Her True Story was released.
Charles later admitted in his 1994 biography that he and Camilla had rekindled their romance
in 1986 after his marriage to Diana had �irretrievably broken down�.
Princess Diana, who reportedly called Camilla �the rottweiler�, was having an affair
with James Hewitt at the same time.
Prince Charles and Princess Diana ended their disastrous marriage in 1996, a year after
Camilla and Andrew Parker Bowles divorced.
After both couples finalised their divorces, Camilla and Charles frantically tried to reverse
all of the negative publicity around their relationship, even hiring a PR agency.
However, their attempts at image rehabilitation struggled after Diana was suddenly killed
in a car accident in 1997.
In 2005, almost 10 years after both couples divorced, Camilla and Prince Charles announced
their engagement and were married a few months later.

This video is about an announcement I've wanted to make since I was a little girl.

I have a literary agent!
I am beyond proud to announce that I've signed with Elana Roth Parker of Laura Dail Literary!
This means I'm agent sisters with my close friend Alexa Donne, whose debut Brightly Burning
is releasing next May, as well as Kiera Cass, the #1 New York Times Bestselling author of
The Selection series.
I'm also agency sisters with Sarah J Maas and Julie Dao, so I think it's safe to say
I'm in pretty awesome company.
I had a pretty charmed experience querying, so I've been thinking about how best to talk
to you about it.
When I was a little girl, obsessively researching and dreaming about how it might go for me
when I was ready, I never imagined it would happen the way it has.
I want to be thoughtful to a viewer like that and do my best to tell the truth and still
offer helpful advice as much as I can from my unusual experience.
The last thing I'd want would to be careless to the struggle that querying and publishing
is for the majority of people, especially other marginalized authors.
I don't imagine that my career will always be as fast paced or exciting as it is at the
moment.
I'm not going to dismiss the real, hard work I've put into my writing and career, please
understand I've been working toward this moment for almost ten years.
But I do want to acknowledge that I have some incredible mentors and have been very lucky
to have friends willing to use their industry connections to make this process a lot more
direct than it typically is.
So my other big secret is that for several months now I've been working with Lauren Oliver
and Glasstown Entertainment, formerly known as Paper Lantern Lit, to help me develop a
book I'm really proud of.
I will very likely do a separate video all about Glasstown and how their company and
working with them works, but a quick summary is that they are like a plot factory, filled
to the brim with excellent and experienced professionals who understand the market, the
craft of writing, and the industry.
They come up with book ideas and plots and pair them with talented writers to create
awesome books.
The simplest term to describe them would be a book packager, but as they are also expanding
into filmmaking and also sometimes work collaboratively with authors to plot, develop, publish, and
market their own ideas I thought it best to elaborate.
They describe themselves as a 360-degree media and content company and I agree.
My experience with them has been so incredible thus far.
They definitely think big picture and have been so supportive and collaborative in working
with me to make sure that we are on the same page for not only this book but my long term
career goals.
I first met one of their editors, the awesome Kamilla Benko, author of THE UNICORN QUEST,
when I attended Leviosa last year.
Unbeknownst to me, when she came back to work after the conference she told her coworkers
about me.
They were hoping to find a way to bring me into the company for a few months before I
became homeless.
After we lost our house, Kamilla reached out to me to ask if her boss could email me.
Her boss being literary superstar and the all around incredible Lauren Oliver.
Lauren asked for sample pages to see if maybe they could help launch my writing career and
it has sort of catapulted from there!
Not a lot happened until after we settled into a new place because I couldn't really
focus on writing until then, but these last few months have been very exciting.
I was and am still very excited to be working with Glasstown on what I hope will be my debut
novel.
I feel like I am very good at coming up with high concept ideas and have a good handle
on character and voice, but figuring out how to build a great plot from those things is
a little harder for me.
Other writers have described working with Glasstown as an MFA program that you get paid
for.
In just a short time I've learned so much about structure and how to better match the
vision in my head with what's on paper.
Anyway, so this is where we return to my agent story.
My story is not the typical querying process because Lauren asked her agent if he would
be willing to tell other agents about me.
So I was very lucky and privileged to have a list of five agents who knew who I was and
wanted to hear from me.
This is not normal.
But I was still really scared to send off these queries.
You can't face a moment like that, one you've dreamt of for ages, and not be afraid.
I sent them off at 6pm the Tuesday before Memorial Day weekend and had my first reply
within an hour.
It was Elana, telling me Alexa had told her a bit about me too, that she loved my concept
and sample chapter, asked for if I had any more pages and if I'd like to talk on the
phone.
She gave me three separate time frames that would work for her.
I think I was in shock, but I told her that I could talk whenever.
Then I CapsLock screamed to Alexa and Lauren.
I was totally aware that the call might not be an offer, but it was still very exciting.
The same night another one of the agents replied asking for a call, and another for more pages.
I just sort of laid down on my bed staring at my phone and crying.
I am an optimistic but practical person and I didn't know how to match all the years I'd
spent envisioning and planning this experience to the reality of what was really happening.
I set up the second call before I even had the opportunity to speak with the first one
and sent off the extra pages to the third agent.
He bowed out early the next morning because he didn't think it was the best fit, which
was fair because his list seemed more contemporary focused and my idea is speculative fiction.
I was actually happy that he rejected me because that felt a lot more normal than everything
else that was happening.
It felt good to see that because it made me feel less like this was all a big joke and
that the other agents were going to tell me they didn't actually like me or my book.
The morning after I queried I spoke with Elana and it was magical.
We hit it off instantly.
She'd worked at a company like Glasstown before she became an agent, so she had an idea of
how to work with one, she really connected with my concept and hopes.
She was fully on board with my vision of how I'd like future books and my career to go.
It felt like talking to a friend.
And it was definitely an offer of representation, though I was so busy chatting with her we
never said those exact words on the phone.
She understood that I needed to hear back from the other agents and speak with them
before making my decision.
All of the agents did.
That was actually the hardest part for me.
It's an incredible position to be in, but it's also very overwhelming to have more than
one offer.
This is also a really important piece to note.
Elana was always one of my top picks, but even though I felt so good about her, I knew
the smartest thing to do was wait at least a week if not two so that I could make an
informed decision.
You never want to make such a big decision without considering your options, no matter
how exciting an offer or offering agent is.
No reputable agent will be angry at with you for waiting to accept an offer, in fact all
of the ones who offered to me complimented me on my decision to do so.
If someone pressures you to decide immediately, that is a big red flag.
Anyway, though I was excited to speak it's everyone, I was also very nervous and overwhelmed.
When I spoke with the second agent and she told me how much she loved my writing voice,
it was just so much.
I never imagined how terrifying it is to have more than one incredible person want you.
I didn't want to let anybody down.
Before the weekend but after the first two calls another agent asked me to query him
on Twitter and I did, and after giving everyone the full holiday weekend, I told all the remaining
agents about my two offers.
This was the week before BookCon, so everyone was gearing up for BEA.
Still, I got another request for more pages and the Twitter agent asked to speak.
I am so glad I queried him, because talking with him on the phone was probably the smartest
decision I made in this process.
He made my decision so much harder.
He was experienced and passionate and so smart.
He'd reached out to me!
He didn't even know about Glasstown until he read my query.
I felt just as at ease with him as I did Elana and he asked me really great questions.
I left that conversation feeling really confident and self assured.
I wasn't sure how I was going to make my decision.
I made a list of questions, some I'd pulled from what agents had asked me in our conversations,
some common offer questions, and some ones I made up on my own.
I'm going to include these questions on a blog post I'll link in the description because
they really helped me compare and contrast and come at this decision with no doubts.
I sent them off to all three offer agents and sent a final nudge to the other agents

All three offering agents responded within a day, Elana first as always, asking if I
wanted to discuss her answers in another call.
Speaking with Elana again was the second smartest decision I made.
It reminded me of how well we connected after I'd been distracted by the other awesome agents
and all her answers lined up perfectly with what I'd hoped to hear.
She even told me that she saw the Twitter Agent ask me to query him and she thought
"Oh crap."
Not because he was a terrible agent but because she knew how great he was and she was worried
I'd pick him over her.
But she didn't have a single bad thing to say about him or to sway my decision, in fact
she said even more good things about him.
I really had no lackluster agents to choose from.
Everyone I queried and everyone who offered were at the top of their game, so it really
came down to our personal fit and my gut feelings.
There was no bad option.
If I would have changed anything about my experience I would have considered the timing
more.
I sent my first query a few days before Memorial Day weekend and then the following week was
a very busy time in the industry.
It was just a really hectic time, especially with how fast everything moved.
The two agents I never got a chance to speak to both apologized afterwards for being super
busy and I wish I'd had a chance to talk to them, but I'm also really confident in my
decision.
I have no regrets.
I have complete trust in Elana.
She's also super responsive no matter what, so that's definitely a very big plus.
The really special thing about choosing Elana though is that I've followed Kiera Cass since
she was making twilight fan videos and watched her entire publishing journey in real time.
I even have a signed copy of her self-published novel that I won from a contest before The
Selection was published.
Keira's YouTube channel was what inspired me to create my own, so having the same agent
really feels like bringing things full circle.
It felt like it was meant to be.
I can say the same thing about working with Lauren and Glasstown.
Delirium was the first book that made me really start taking writing Young Adult seriously,
so to be working on my debut novel with her is just incredible.
I absolutely love Lauren.
She's become like a big sister to me.
I feel so lucky to have her as a mentor and friend.
I am so excited and proud to be working with these wonderful women.
I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish together.
