Youtube daily report w Jun 16 2017

• From sitting next to bird-killing psychopaths, to getting a foot wedged inside of you, the

Planet Dolan crew re-enact some of the best true stories from our subreddit about the

most disturbing things that have ever happened to you on a bus PART 2– I'm Zaraganba

and today I'll be your narrator

10 – Cheerbowsb4bros Melissa Melissa was riding the bus home from school

once when the only seat left was next to a first grader.

She sat down and noticed that a horrible stench was coming from the kid's backpack.

He picked up his bag and opened it, pulling out a dead bird that looked like it had been

run over.

She looked around desperately trying to find another seat to move to, but she was stuck

next to him.

He started playing with it and asked Melissa if she wanted to play with it too.

8 years after the incident, Melissa heard the kid was taken to an insane asylum for

asking people if he could dissect them.

9 - KillDozer688 Honeybits When Honeybits was in high school, her bus

driver had a reputation for being someone you did not want to mess with.

He was always so angry that the students nicknamed him Pitbull.

If anyone made so much as a sound during the drive, he would stop the bus and scream at

the person who did it.

One time a student got on board and started making a lot of noise, which made Pitbull

instantly rage.

He screamed at the student and threw them from the moving bus.

Nobody dared to piss off Pitbull after that, and Honeybits couldn't wait to get off that

bus at the end of every day.

8 – redwelch22 Nixxiom During his freshman year, Nixxiom joined his

high school football team.

One time they were on a bus, travelling four hours to play a match against another school.

Halfway into the trip Nixxiom started having an asthma attack and quickly gulped his entire

Gatorade.

His mouth was so dry from the incident that it was causing him pain.

He asked anyone on the bus if they had a drink they could spare.

One of the guys threw Nixxiom a yellow Gatorade, or so he thought.

After a mouthful of the liquid, he soon realised that it was actually somebody's urine, not

Gatorade.

He spat it out and tried not to vomit for the rest of the trip.

7 – Toriel_Pie Doopie The most disturbing thing that happened to

Doopie on the bus, was when she was going on a field trip to the zoo.

All of the kids were excited, talking and chatting with buddies.

Then out of nowhere, this kid in the back row starts screaming uncontrollably loud.

It was a bloody murder scream.

Everyone looked at him in pure confusion, even the teachers and the bus driver stopped

and stared.

Then he just randomly went silent and started talking to his friends like nothing ever happened.

When they arrived at the zoo, he started again.

All of the animals nearby ran away from him in terror.

She never found out what was wrong with the kid.

6 – KaitF123 Ramona and Ladybot Ramona and Ladybot were sitting next to each

other on a bus talking once, when suddenly the bus came to a stop and the bus driver

stormed up the aisle and stood at the seat next to them.

He looked at the boys next to them and demanded they hand over anything that took pictures.

They had no idea what was going on, so the driver explained that whenever the bus went

over speed bumps, the creepy guys were taking photos of the girls because of the way their

boobs bounced around.

Ramona and Ladybot were so pissed off that they smacked both of the perverts on their

way off the bus.

5 – emilyjones24658 Tolop Tolop was on a bus with his friends once and

they were joking around.

Tolop told a particularly funny story and his friend laughed so hard that they peed

their pants.

His friend realised what had happened and covered himself with his bag to hide the incident.

The disturbing part was that while his friend waited for his stop, he took his finger and

dabbed it in the pee, and then licked his urine-covered finger.

Tolop almost projectile vomited from the sight, but his friend shrugged and said 'whatever,

it's pretty good'.

He couldn't look at his friend in the eyes after that.

4 – Lord_Lotad Pringle One time, Pringle was on the late bus home,

there weren't many people on the bus so he took his seat and began to read a book.

At the next stop, a guy got on the bus, plainly holding a cigarette, yet the driver let him

on anyway.

The guy chose the seat right behind him.

Every time he inhaled on the cigarette, he would then exhale smoke all onto Pringle's

head.

As his stop approached, Pringle picked up his bag when he suddenly felt a searing pain

on the top of his head.

He quickly realised that the man had tried to put out his cigarette on Pringle's head,

and acting on pure instinct, he turned and punched him in the face.

The bus driver didn't notice a thing, and he got off the bus and went home.

3 – Thethe23 SpinalPalm When SpinalPalm was very young, he was on

a bus with his father.

He was excited to be travelling on a bus and he stuck his arm out the window.

SpinalPalm turned to his father and said, 'Hey Dad, it's raining!'

His dad looked out the window, it was a bright sunny day and there wasn't a cloud in the

sky.

SpinalPalm quickly realised that it wasn't rain.

At the front of the bus, a passenger who was having motion sickness was vomiting violently

out the window.

He looked at his arm, it was covered in chunks of vomit.

The smell of the vomit made SpinalPalm vomit out the window too.

2 – Ichidon Dolan When Dolan was in 7th grade it was winter

and it was really cold.

He was waiting in the aisle of his bus for all of the other students to take their seats.

The floor was wet from all the melted ice dripping from people's feet.

Everyone was pushing and shoving trying to find a seat when suddenly Dolan slipped on

some melted snow, and tripped over.

One of his friends accidentally trampled over him and somehow lodged his entire foot up

Dolan's rectum.

The rest of the bus found this hilarious and gave Dolan the nickname 'Footbutt' for

the rest of the year.

to get a proper brain freeze at about eight cubes of ice to your blender and

follow that with two scoops of vanilla ice cream add an extra scoop if you like

a thicker beverage and want to feel bad about yourself tomorrow hashtag

indulgence one ounce of coffee liqueur one ounce of Irish cream one ounce of

before you see too much of a buzz you'll be fat and bloated before you're

drunk but you'll be happy now garnish your glass with some chocolate sauce

just because pour your beverage into the glass

Ash and Serena Get MARRIED!!! LOVE AT FIRST SITE!!!!! - Duration: 10:48.

Hello how are you guys doing today my name is black tarzan and today we are going to

be talking about the top 10 facts about Misty!

Coming Up!

Guys before I start off the video I would just like to ask everyone watching this video

right now to subscribe to my youtube channel!

Join the black tarzan army today!

Anway, let's get right into the video!

Okay guys I just wanted to let you know that ash and serena fall in love in the anime and

the manga.

This information might shock some of you so be sure to hang on to your seat and buckle

up.

I have received some super-secret information that was leaked about pokemon from the creator

of the pokemon anime himself.

Before you will even be able to understand this information, you are going to need to

know a little bit about serena and her background story.

Serena is a Pokémon Performer and a former traveling companion of Ash, who debuted in

Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!.

Her first Pokémon was a Fennekin that she received from Professor Sycamore.

As a young child, Serena was sent to Kanto, against her will, to attend a Pokémon Summer

Camp, which was hosted by Professor Oak.

One day, while at the camp, she got lost in a nearby forest and was startled by a Poliwag,

falling over and hurting her knee.

Then, she met Ash Ketchum, who was looking for the same Poliwag and spotted Serena.

Noticing her knee injury, he pulled out a handkerchief and wrapped it around her wounded

knee, saying that it is a good-luck charm and that the pain would go away.

However, when Serena's knee continued to hurt, Ash told her "Don't give up till it's over"

and helped her up before escorting her out of the forest.

Afterwards, she returned to Kalos, bringing along the handkerchief and the memory of her

meeting with Ash.

Serena made her first onscreen appearance in Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!,

where she was forcibly woken up by her mother's Fletchling.

In Lumiose City Pursuit!, she attempted to practice Rhyhorn racing after being encouraged

by her mother, a famous Rhyhorn racer herself.

However, Serena's attempts at controlling her mother's Rhyhorn ended with her being

sent crashing into the ground.

Later that evening, Serena complained about her earlier practice leaving several scratches

on her face.

She sat down to watch a news report on an incident that was occurring in Lumiose City.

On the screen, she saw Ash trying to calm down a rampaging Garchomp at Prism Tower and

recognized Ash as a boy she had known in her childhood.

The next day, while feeding Rhyhorn, Serena thought aloud that something interesting was

going to happen and that it involved Ash.

She began her Pokémon journey in A Battle of Aerial Mobility! when she set off to Professor

Sycamore's lab in Lumiose City.

Immediately upon arriving, Serena questioned the Professor about the boy on television

and he confirmed that it was indeed Ash Ketchum.

However, to Serena's disappointment, Ash had already left Lumiose City for the Santalune

City Gym the previous day.

Serena was then offered to choose her starter Pokémon.

In A Shockingly Cheeky Friendship!, Serena chose Fennekin, received a Pokédex, and started

her journey.

Later that day, she continued to travel with Fennekin, but didn't want to camp out for

the night after seeing some wild Venipede.

She was attacked by a wild Vespiquen that she mistook for a person, only for Fennekin

to scare Vespiquen away.

Afterward, Serena met a Nurse Joy, who told her where to find the nearest Pokémon Center.

In A Blustery Santalune Gym Battle!, she finally reached Santalune City and found Ash during

his Gym battle with Viola.

She introduced herself to him, Clemont, and Bonnie, after returning his backpack when

it was left behind at the Gym.

At the end of the episode, she asks Ash if he remembers her, at which point the episode

abruptly ends.

In Battling on Thin Ice!, she revealed that the two of them met at the Pokémon Summer

Camp when they were younger.

Although Ash remembered the camp, he didn't specifically remember meeting Serena, much

to her disappointment.

Serena quickly regained her composure and reminded him that he once told her to never

give up.

Hearing these words helped Ash continue his training in order to win the rematch against

Viola.

During the rematch, Ash was visibly becoming overwhelmed by Viola's battling strategy,

but Serena yelled at him to never give up.

The inspiration that he had once given Serena was now being given to him, and these words

encouraged him to continue the battle.

At the end of the episode, after winning the Bug Badge, Ash asked Serena what her plans

for the future were.

Serena officially began traveling with Ash and his friends in Giving Chase at the Rhyhorn

Race!.

This was when Serena revealed why she began her journey in the first place.

After seeing Ash on TV, she decided that she would begin a Pokémon journey in order to

return the handkerchief he used to mend her knee injury.

After she returned the handkerchief, Ash remembered their encounter and called her the "girl with

the straw hat."

Later on, Serena helped teach Ash how to ride and race on a Rhyhorn when he expressed an

interest in Rhyhorn racing.

While doing so, Serena's opinion on Rhyhorn and Rhyhorn riding quickly changed when the

Rhyhorn were very friendly towards her.

Later, while she was helping Ash learn to ride, she called out similar words Serena's

mother had yelled to her during her Rhyhorn riding lessons at home.

At that moment, Serena realized that she had misjudged the sport of Rhyhorn racing and

that perhaps she did not hate it as much as she thought.

Serena expressed in the same episode that she did not dislike Rhyhorn racing but that

she wanted to find a goal that she likes even more.

The next day, Ash was captured by Team Rocket and Serena had to help rescue him.

This was when Serena had her first Pokémon battle, commanding Fennekin to use Ember on

the criminals.

At the end of the episode, she gave Ash a pouch of cookies, saying it was her way of

thanking him for all he had done for her.

In Clemont's Got a Secret!, Serena learned from Clemont's father, Meyer, that Clemont

is the Lumiose City Gym Leader.

Although initially angry with Clemont for keeping this

secret from her along with Ash, she helped take back the Gym from the malfunctioning

Clembot.

She battled Clemont's Magneton with her Fennekin, but it managed to avoid Fennekin's attack,

forcing Pikachu and Froakie to step in and defeat it.

Later, she watched Clemont battle and defeat Clembot for the control of the Lumiose Gym.

Serena has proven to be a kind and polite girl but she can also be openly rebellious

towards her mother, Grace.

In Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!, she refused to wake up when Grace ordered

her to, and gave a sassy response to her mother's call to watch the news.

This tumultuous relationship was best demonstrated when Grace made her practice Rhyhorn riding,

an activity Serena had hated doing.

However, their relationship is also very loving as shown in later episodes.

I am so glad you guys stuck around to learn more about Serena and her lifestyle.

I hope you all now understand how serena and ash are in love.

Definitely be sure to subscribe to my youtube channel called black tarzan.

I would greatly appreciate if you took the time to show your support for my channel,

Does The Doomsday Device Really Exist? - Duration: 14:48.

Hey Thoughty2 here.

The atom bomb, hydrogen bomb, nuclear bomb, whatever you want to call it, is the single

most destructive thing humanity has ever created, one nuclear device could flatten a city the

size of London.

And the United States of America has lost eight of them.

Permanently misplaced, these estranged nuclear warheads are called "broken arrows" by the

Department of Defense.

How does the world's largest superpower lose over 1,000 kilograms of nuclear explosives,

eight times?

The first was lost on February 13th, 1950.

A B-36 bomber was flying from Alaska to Texas, it lost power and began to free-fall.

To prevent the bomb from detonating when the plane crashed he dropped the payload, a Fat

Man nuclear bomb into the Pacific Ocean.

Submarine search teams were dispatched to find it, but it was never located and to this

day, one of the world's most powerful nuclear bombs remains undetonated, somewhere at the

bottom of the Pacific.

Another two bombs with a combined yield of 3.4 megatons went missing in 1956, when a

B-47 left from Florida.

Whilst traveling over the Mediterranean sea, through thick fog, it went missing, it was

never heard from again, the nuclear weapons were never found.

Another went missing in a swamp, another bomb rolled off a US navy vessel just off the coast

of Japan, which Japan weren't too pleased about, to say the least.

And another two were lost at sea when a US submarine mysteriously sank along with all

99 crewe members.

But whilst America has been busy losing nuclear warheads, Russia were hard at work building

them.

At the height of the cold war, in 1985, the Soviet Union had a terrifying 39,197 nuclear

weapons, many more than the count of America's peak stockpile of 31,139.

It has often been said that nuclear war is madness and mad it is.

M.A.D. as in Mutually Assured Destruction.

The only thing that has so far prevented the end of the world.

A doctrine of war that means if one side uses their full nuclear arsenal on the other, then

the other side will automatically use their nuclear arsenal upon the attacker in response,

therefore wiping out both countries.

It is based on the Nash equilibrium, which dictates that when both opponents possess

the same strategy, neither side has anything to gain by using their strategy and therefore

the best course of action is to do nothing.

And so the world is frozen in a constant state of being on the brink of blowing each other

up.

But how did it come to this?

Fleeing persecution from the Nazi regime, many Jewish scientists fled to the West during

the early days of the war, including highly influential physicists such as Albert Einstein,

Hans Bethe, Edward Teller and John von Neumann.

Most of them joined the Manhattan project, a brand new, top-secret program between United

States, United Kingdom and Canada with one primary goal, to invent the atomic bomb.

The enormous project employed 130,000 people and cost the US the modern-day equivalent

of $25 billion dollars.

Just three years after the project was established the US detonated the world's first ever nuclear

weapon in the New Mexico dessert.

It was codenamed Trinity.

They didn't waste any time and just three weeks later they detonated a Uranium bomb

over Hiroshima, killing over 140,000 people.

In the bloody aftermath of the war there was a twilight struggle between the Communist

Soviet Union and Capitalist America to gain control of and shape how the post-world war

would look.

Russia had also gone nuclear and the arms race had begun.

An arms race that would last 44 years, this was the Cold War.

It was the ultimate contest of might and each side went to extraordinary lengths just to

prove they were the most endowed country.

The USA seriously considered a plan to airdrop enormous condoms labelled "Medium" into the

USSR to demoralise the Soviets and give the impression that Americans had a greater "manhood".

The US also developed a top secret plan to detonate a nuclear bomb on the moon as a display

of military prowess but it was a tad too expensive.

So when that didn't work out, they created project Acoustic Kitty.

The CIA implanted microphones attached to a radio transmitter inside cats.

The plan was to use cats to spy on the Kremlin, but during the very first test, the cat was

accidentally run over by a car, so that threw a spanner of doubt into the general reliability

of spy cats and the Acoustic Kitty program was scrapped.

The tension grew until it all came to a climax during the most intense and uncertain 13 days

of the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis.

October 16th 1962, Russia gets a bee in its bonnet over ballistic missiles that America

had deployed in Italy and Turkey, conveniently in easy reach and pointed right at the USSR.

Russia responded by placing a bunch of their nuclear weapons in Cuba, in frightfully close

proximity to the US, giving Russia the opportunity to destroy any number of American cities with

ease.

During these nail-biting thirteen days the world was closer to complete nuclear annihilation

that it has ever been.

Eventually an agreement was reached between John F. Kennedy and Khrushchev that both parties

would dismantle and remove their respective weapons from, Italy, Turkey and Cuba.

But what few people know is that during the Cuban Missile Crisis we came just a hairsbreadth

from total nuclear annihilation, because of three men in a submarine.

During the crisis Kennedy put a blockade on all sea traffic to Cuba to prevent Russia

from delivering even more nuclear weapons to the small island nation.

But a Soviet submarine is hiding, deep in the Caribbean sea around Cuba.

US navy vessels pick it up on their radars and start dropping depth charges to the left

and right of the submarine, to try and deter it back to Russia.

The sub is violently shaking, the on-board temperature rapidly rising, a decision has

to be made quickly.

The sub hadn't made contact with Russia for several days, they were too deep for their

communications to reach the surface, they had no idea what was going on above the water.

Completely in the dark, the three Soviet submarine commanders on board the vessel came to the

conclusion that full-scale nuclear war had erupted above the surface.

They thought World War III was underway, hence the aggression they were receiving.

Little did the Americans know that this submarine was equipped with an enormous nuclear torpedo,

capable of wiping out a nearby fleet of US destroyers or an entire city.

One of the submarine captains proclaimed "We're gonna blast them now!".

They readied the nuclear torpedo and their hand was hovering over the red button.

If they had fired the nuclear weapon, it would have lead to a chain of events that would

have actually caused full-scale nuclear war and the end of the world.

But they didn't fire the nuclear torpedo because of the calm temperament one man, Vasili Alexandrovich

Arkhipov.

Soviet submarines were only allowed to fire their nuclear weapons if all three on-board

commanders agreed to do so, unanimously.

The other two commanders had agreed to fire and were pushing Vasili to acquiesce, but

he would not.

He believed this was not an attack but just a not-so-subtle way of America telling them

to get away from Cuba.

He remained calm and talked down the other two commanders, saving the world.

These instances aren't as rare as you might hope, in total, there have been 13 events

were nuclear weapons were nearly launched due to accidents or false alarms.

But why is nuclear war MAD?

Why does Mutually Assured Destruction have to be the only way?

Is it not possible that America could use their full nuclear force on Russia's nuclear

facilities in a pre-emptive strike, completely wiping Russia off the map before they even

have a chance to retaliate?

Or vice-versa?

Well, at the height of the cold war Russia feared this very scenario and America had

begun to develop sophisticated anti-ballistic missile systems that could detonate Russian

missiles at altitude, way before they hit their target.

Russia didn't like this, so they developed the ultimate weapon, a world destroying weapon

that would leave no survivors, The Doomsday Device.

The Soviet Union created the largest nuclear bomb in history.

Named Tsar Bomba, the "King of Bombs", it was tested in 1961 in the wilds of Siberia.

It had 1,600 times the combined power of the bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Even the soviets were surprised by how immensely powerful the blast was, it destroyed an entire

nearby village, flattening stone houses.

And it shattered windows a thousand miles away in Finland and Norway.

But Nikita Khrushchev wasn't satisfied.

It's no use having the world's most powerful weapon if nobody is left alive to use it.

So he came up with a plan, a real life doomsday device that Dr. Strangelove would be proud

of.

The plan was to take a large cargo ship and turn the entire vessel into a nuclear bomb.

The entire cargo hold would be filled with fissionable radioactive material, it would

be many times more powerful than the Tsar Bomba and truly powerful enough to destroy

the entire planet, all on its own.

It would permanently circle the coastline of Russia and onboard sensors would detect

radiation levels.

If at any point extremely high radiation was detected, indicating Russia had been hit with

a nuclear weapon.

The ship would automatically, with no human intervention, detonate itself, destroying

the planet.

It was completely automated and would ensure that even if no Russian was left alive that

they would still have the last laugh by killing everything.

What a truly terrifying prospect, luckily Russian scientists managed to persuade Khrushchev

to drop the idea.

It never went ahead.

But another plan did, a real doomsday device that still exists today.

Dr Strangelove may have been fictional, but the Doomsday Device is very real and it's

called "Russia's Dead Hand" because even when Russia is dead, they can still play their

hand.

The system was code-named "Perimeter".

Thousands of sensors were placed all around Russia.

These sensors measure seismic activity, light levels, radioactivity, overpressure and sound

levels.

All this is fed back to underground computers.

The data is crunched and if the data suggests that Russia has been hit by a nuclear blast

the system automatically activates itself.

Once activated the Dead Hand system sends a signal to every missile silo in the country

and they will automatically and instantaneously fire at every major city around the world,

but mostly America.

Absolutely no human interaction is needed for the system to function.

This seems pointless and totally excessive but it serves a very important function.

It is the only real deterrent that can stop America from launching a pre-emptive strike

on Russia's nuclear facilities and heads of government, disabling their retaliation abilities.

So in a twisted way, the world's most chilling device is actually the only thing saving us

all.

The scariest part?

You would think such a system would have been turned off at the end of the Cold War, but

high-ranking Russian insiders have reported that the system is still fully functional

and remains activated today.

But Russia committed the cardinal sin of a Doomsday system, they forget to tell anyone.

Russia kept the existence of their Dead Hand top secret for years, until a high-ranking

official leaked knowledge of it in the 90s.

And in the words of Dr. Strangelove "The whole point of the doomsday machine is lost, if

you keep it a secret!"

Thanks for watching.

How to setup a drip irrigation system - Part 2 - Duration: 9:38.

okay this is my drip system

it's kind of a mess now

and the plants are still adjusting

so to the transplant

but they're starting to put on new growth so

I think

I think they're fine and also the nutrients

level I'm using

was the lowest end

and I'm ramping that up now so

that should encourage more growth and

greener leaves

as I said I upgraded to using a drip systemn

I have a

Pressure regulator and a

filter here so

I took the one off

that I had here that I

showed in the diagram

I could probably put the ones I have

back here

and it'd be okay, give me a little more protection

but for now I have those off

so this is that little adapter I was telling

you about

there's the water hose line

drip line

here's my timer

I've got it set to come on every morning at 6 am

this connection from the half inch tube

to here is a perma-loc fitting

so that goes to

another perma-loc fitting

back to the pressure regulator

goes up to the filter

and this is a bypass assembly

and notice they have a shut off valve

so basically what you could do is route water around

you fert injector if

you ever needed to take this off line

of if you just wanted to run just plain water

through it

here's my reservoir

of nutrients and

and this is the feed tube

so this draws nutrients

to through here

the water comes

in goes

to the fert injector there

draws up nutrient solution, injects it into the stream

here and comes out

and this goes out to my drip line

my drip system

and I apologize for the mess

messiness here

but

for the grass, but this is the

perma-loc tee adapter

so that's one row

and it continues over here

so a perma-loc

elbow

and that's my other row

so you can see how

I did my drip lines

this is one of the

barbed tees

and I'll show

one of those

close up when I

hook up the other ones

but this is a

1/4 inch poly tubing

goes to another tee

and then there's

a line on each end of that

that goes to a drip emitter

so I've got a drip emitter

on each side of each plant

so I've got room on the end of my lines

to do one more pair

this is a terminating

cap it's another perma-loc fitting

so what I want to do is

get my stuff and I'm going to install

basically one of these

right here

and show you how

exactly how that looks

this is

1/4 inch poly tubing

and

these are my drip emitters

the poly tubing actually

connect here

and water comes out there

these are the barbed tee connectors I was telling you about

this one goes into the mainline and

then the poly tubing connects on the other side

I recommend

wearing gloves cause you'll really hurt your fingers

and this is a punch tool

punches a hole in the main

line

so the barbed connector

can connect to it

another thing I recommend

is a little tubing cutter

makes it so much easier

really works with the 1/4 inch tubing

I like to keep a piece of tape

covering this

so dirt doesn't get in there

when you're not ready to use it

and also I have a

tape measure

so I'm first going to measure out

two 24 inch pieces

and four 12 inch pieces

and that'll give me

enough to hook up this end

and I'll have to do this all over again

on the other side

so I'll go ahead and do that I'll be right back

see it makes it a lot easier

it's actually easier to do this type of stuff inside

and to do just a whole bunch of them at once

another thing, just a tip

when you're laying out your main lline

it's good to keep the printed side up

and that way

you can kind of use that as a guide

where to put your holes and that way

and that way you know that all

are kind of along the same side

here's my little punch tool, this is a really cheap one

it works

pretty much put it right here on the end

and that

and that just

pops

right down in there

you kind of here it click

rotate around

and I've got

this is one of my

24 inch lines

just take that

see how that

pushes on like that

same thing with the other one

okay that's good

so I need to put the

tee on each end

this is actually way easier to do outside, it'll hurt

your back

bending over like this

but

that just fits in there

and I've got

little 12 inch lines

again this is just how I'm doing mine

you could just do one line per plant

so there's that

and then I just put the

drip emitters

and that's that

and I want to

put some tape on the ends of these so

so I don't get dirt in them

and get the other one done

and then I'm going to get my

bag filled up and ready to go

and it'll look just like

like these

when they're installed

see how that goes

yeah when I get it installed

I'll turn the drip system on to let you see how

how it sounds and looks

but let me get these others done and I'll be right back

I only did this pair

I'll do this one

later

so these are ready to go

let's go ahead and turn this on

I've got it set to come on manually but

I mean come on automatically

but you can set it manually

to

that and

set it for how long you want it to run

and

and also I installed this back

[click]...[click]

the clicking sound is

the diaphragm pump

drawing nutrients up and

pushing it through

see how the emitters look

take a look at the ones we just installed

sometimes if they're not leaning forward they're still

dripping but it just doesn't look like it

sometimes you have to, I mean it's still, water's still getting in there

this one too

I like to see the drips coming out so I know it's working

yeah so that's

that's that this is my Mayan

pepper

and this is a

Yellow Dystopia

so anyway

that's how I setup my drip system

hope that was helpful

or give you some kind of

baseline to work from

if you want to design your own

it only gets as complicated as you make it

it really doesn't need to be

overly complicated

anyway, thank you very much for watching

and please like, comment and subscribe

How to setup a drip irrigation system - Part 1 - Duration: 8:55.

Hi this is Peter Stanley, welcome to my channel.

Today I want to talk about

how to setup a

drip irrigation system

really the basics of one

give you some

ideas on how to design your own

and show you my drip system

as an example

so at the very basic level

you would need a water source

usually a spigot

and you need a filter

the one I have is inline filter

but you don't have to use an inline filter

and

below that you would need a pressure reducer

and then your main line

usually this is

like 1/2" tubing

so that would attach there

and on the end you would have a terminator

and

then you would need to connect

the main line to you drip emitter

that's normally done with 1/4" tubing

so this would, kind of like that

It doesn't have to be two, it could just be one

that would attach to an emitter

and that would stake next to your plant

so when you turn the water on

it sends water

to all the emitters that are attached.

connections are made

with barbed fittings

1/4" and I use a tool

to, just kind of give a

like say this is the 2"

sorry, 1/2" tubing

punch a hole in it with a special tool

and then you would insert a barbed connector

and if you're doing just one line you would use a single

connector

one end would stick in there

and the other end would attach to your poly tubing

or if you wanted to do two lines you could

use a tee connector

and so the poly tubing would connect to each end

so that was how I designed my first one

I had a tee connector with

lines on each side to my plants

with one emitter

so basically if you want to design your own

there are some things to consider

first you need to

look at how much grow space you have

to setup your system

the number of plants and type of plants

I grow peppers mostly

so my example fits the model for the number of plants I'm growing

spacing between

plants, and that

is more determined by the type, depending on how big your plants get

and your budget

what I recommend doing

is sketch out your system

with all these factors considered

and then determine

what parts you need

and

goto somewhere that sells drip parts and

see how much it would cost to

to buy all of these

and the next thing I recommend is to

find a kit

that approximates what you're doing

I use Drip Depot

I'm affiliate of theirs, so

the link I have in the description, if you

buy something through there I'll earn a commission

but I've recommend them long before I became an affiliate

but they're just a good company

but you don't have to use them, there are other

drip companies, and some of the big box stores have kits

so I encourage you to

sketch out your system

based on your space and your requirements

and then look at the number of parts you need

these are things like

how much tubing

and also the number of like

barbed connectors or

whatever you use to connect your

1/4" line

number of

1/2" connectors

I like the Perma-loc

they work really well

and things like your

pressure reducer

filter

and also I recommend

a timer

turn your system on and off

and also a

an adapter for the spigot

it's like a little Y adapter

and they have individual shutoff

your drip system

would connect to that and

this other side allows you to use your water hose

independently of your drip system

so those a really, you can get those for 5 or 6 dollars

I want to give you a quick overview

of how I designed my system

so from the, and this is how I initially

designed it, I made some upgrades

so I have the filter

pressure reducer

my timer was above all that

so I did two rows

so I kind went like that

and then I did a little

elbow

one row

and a tee adapter there

another row

and the rows were about 25 feet long

but this is just showing kind of

the overview

barbed tees

of course I had terminators on the end

and then I used 1/4" tubing

on

and one drip emitter per plant

so in this scenario I need these essential parts

and

how ever many plants, I think last year I had

about 60 plants

so you've just got to figure up how much of what you need

so I had barbed tee connectors

I had drip emitters

and I use the 1/2 gallon

per hour but you can use faster

faster rate ones

if you use faster ones you just run it for less time

you kinda have to test run to see

how long it takes to run through

the faster the emitter the less time

you need, but the 1/2 gallon

per hour work fine

so you need to determine how much 1/2" tubing

how much 1/4" tubing you need

how many emitters

and your connectors like

tee connector, elbow connector, two terminators

I think I also had a shut off valve connector

I think I've got one here also

if I need to isolate parts of it

so that was

how I did

last two years and I made a few

upgrades

primarily

the way I do my connections

like for the emitters

so like this

is the tee barb

and that's the main line

the way I did mine this year is

had 24 inch line

another tee connector

and then two

12 inch lines

and an emitter on each end

so with this system I've got two emitters

per plant

and it gives a little better even coverage

and provides some redundancy

and also another change I made

I gave more spacing than I have been

what I do now is I've got

36 inch

spacing between

pairs and that

cause with peppers, if you're growing small plants it's not

as big of a deal

but

some of the types of peppers can get really large

so as they start growing out

you'll really

be glad you gave it some more spacing

cause it makes, they'll start growing in together

it's hard to tell them apart

so that's

a basic

overview and

on my system I actually have

one the very end, space

to add two more pairs

or one pair on each row

so I'm going to show

you how I do those and how

I punch the holes and make

all the connections

just to walk through that

show you how easy it is and

kind of give you an implementation

I'm also using a fert injector this year too

and the first two years I didn't use a fert injector

basically

the way it work is

this'll be an in

out

so your

line come in

go out, so it's basically

in line with your drip system

the actual injector will be on the bottom

and

reservoir of nutrients

and this would have a feed tube

that sucks this up

and injects that into the stream

so when you

what's going out to your plants has nutrients

if you don't use that

what I used

last two years was

just mixing slow release fertilizer

into the potting mix

so that way every time I watered I was also feeding

my plants, this year I'm

not using slow release fertilizer, I'm just using

hydroponic nutrients

actually using

dyna-gro

7-9-5

that's just

what I'm trying out this year

normally I use Master blend

but this is like an all-in-one solution

so it's a little easier

even though it costs a little more

so anyway let's go ahead

and go outside, and I'll give you a

first hand look at how

my system looks now

and also

how to install those

emitters

and the, all the connections for that

COMING UP ON "NEED TO KNOW"...WHILE SCHOOL KIDS IN

ROCHESTER ARE GEARING UP FOR SUMMER BREAK,

THE LEADER OF THE ROCHESTER CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT IS KEEPING HER

SLEEVES ROLLED UP.

FOR SUPERINTENDENT BARBARA DEANE-WILLIAMS MUCH-NEEDED

CHANGE WITHIN THE CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM DOESN'T HAPPEN WITH

WORDS, BUT ACTIONS.

SO WHAT DOES SHE PLAN TO DO EXACTLY?

FIND OUT JUST AHEAD.

ALSO ON THE SHOW, IT'S RARE FOR VOTERS TO GET A GLIMPSE INSIDE

THE PERSONAL LIVES OF POLITICIANS.

BUT THAT'S ABOUT TO CHANGE.

A SPECIAL SEGMENT ON "NEED TO KNOW" GIVES VIEWERS A UNIQUE

LOOK AT THE PERSON BEHIND THE POLITICIAN.

STAY WITH US, "NEED TO KNOW" STARTS RIGHT NOW.

(MUSIC)

IT WAS THE FATHER OF MODERN PHYSICS, ALBERT EINSTEIN,

WHO SAID "IN THE MIDDLE OF ADVERSITY THERE IS

GREAT OPPORTUNITY."

BUT WHEN IT COMES TO URBAN EDUCATION IN AMERICA THERE'S

SOMETHING CALLED AN OPPORTUNITY GAP.

YOU'VE HEARD THAT PHRASE BEFORE HERE ON "NEED TO KNOW."

ACCORDING TO THE SCHOTT FOUNDATION - THAT GAP REFERS TO

A DISPARITY IN ACCESS TO QUALITY SCHOOLS AND RESOURCES SO ALL

KIDS CAN SUCCEED ACADEMICALLY.

AND THAT'S A GAP SUPERINTENDENT BARBARA DEANE-WILLIAMS IS TRYING

TO HELP CLOSE - THROUGH A NEW VISION, REFINED MEASURES,

AND THE EXPERIENCES AND STORIES OF....STUDENTS.

THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE ROCHESTER CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

JOINED ME IN THE STUDIO RECENTLY TO SHARE SEVERAL ASPECTS OF

HER PLAN. TAKE A LOOK....

HELENE: SO BARBARA YOU HAVE LIVED THE LIFE OF A

SUBURBAN SUPERINTENDENT.

YOU LED GREECE CENTRAL SCHOOLS FOR FOUR YEARS.

AND NOW YOU'RE LIVING THE LIFE OF A CITY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT.

I AM CURIOUS, WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE FOR YOU,

FROM LEADING GREECE CENTRAL SCHOOLS IN COMPARISON TO LEADING

ROCHESTER SCHOOLS, NOW THAT YOU'RE REALLY WRAPPING UP YEAR

ONE IN ROCHESTER?

BARBARA: THE SIZE IS CLEARLY THE MAJOR DIFFERENCE.

ALTHOUGH SERVING FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES IS A SIMILAR KIND OF

ROLE, YOU NEED TO BE VERY MINDFUL OBVIOUSLY OF STUDENTS

AND THEIR NEEDS AND FAMILIES AND REALLY UNDERSTANDING THE

COMMUNITY, AND WHAT THE GOALS IN THE COMMUNITY ARE.

BUT THE SIZE OF THE DISTRICT IS CLEARLY A CHALLENGE.

HELENE: YOU ARE AS I MENTIONED, YOU'RE WRAPPING UP YEAR ONE.

SO AS YOU KIND OF CONCLUDE THIS YEAR AND LOOK AHEAD TO THE

2017-18 SCHOOL YEAR, WHAT DO YOU SEE,

MOST IMPORTANTLY FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS,

REALLY WHAT'S YOUR VISION MOVING FORWARD?

BARBARA: WELL THIS WAS THE YEAR TO BUILD A TEAM.

AND TO REALLY BEGIN TO DEEPLY UNDERSTAND THE DISTRICT,

THE CHALLENGES AS WELL AS THE BRIGHT SPOTS.

SO THAT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME,

TO LOOK AT THE DISTRICT AS A PORTFOLIO OF SCHOOLS.

SO WE HAVE A NUMBER OF SCHOOLS.

WE HAVE MANY DIFFERENT CLASSROOMS, TEACHERS, PROGRAMS,

AND MANY TYPES OF STUDENTS AND LEARNERS AND FAMILIES.

SO IT IS IMPORTANT FOR ME TO UNDERSTAND THE DIVERSITY OF THE

DISTRICT AND THE STRENGTHS OF THE DISTRICT SO THAT I COULD

WORK FROM THE STRENGTHS.

SO NEXT YEAR WHAT WE ARE HOPING TO DO IS TO USE INFORMATION

WE'VE GATHERED THIS YEAR AND WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO LEARN

BECAUSE EVERY DAY, EVERY WEEK, WE LEARN SOMETHING NEW.

AND WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO IS REALLY INCORPORATE THAT LEARNING

WITH COLLECTING THE VOICE OF STUDENTS.

SO THE BIG GOAL FOR NEXT YEAR WILL BE TO SORT OF ALIGN THE

INSTRUCTIONAL VISION AND PLAN FOR THE DISTRICT LONG TERM WITH

THE FACILITIES AND THE SCHOOLS THEMSELVES,

BUT ALSO START TO EXPLORE THE CONCEPT THAT THE COMMUNITY IS

THE CLASSROOM, AND HOW CAN WE HAVE OUR SECONDARY STUDENTS IN

PARTICULAR MORE ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN SERVICE LEARNING AND SORT OF

HANDS ON LEARNING IN THE COMMUNITY.

HELENE: SO YOU REALLY HAVE TAKEN THIS TIME TO ASSEMBLE THIS TEAM,

GET TO KNOW THE NEEDS, AND THEN MOVING FORWARD, LET'S SEE,

TAKE WHAT WE'VE LEARNED AND ALIGN THAT VISION WITH WHERE THE

SCHOOLS ARE, THE FACILITIES ARE IN THE DISTRICT PLAN LONG TERM.

SO IN DOING THAT WHO DO YOU NEED OR WHAT GROUPS ARE YOU DEPENDING

ON TO MAKE THIS GAME PLAN A REALITY?

BARBARA: THIS IS GOING TO TAKE THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY,

BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT WE HAVE LONG TERM FUNDING CHALLENGES.

WE HAVE CHALLENGES WITH NEEDING TO INTEGRATE THE SYSTEM,

REALLY SO THAT WE ARE SERVING STUDENTS AS ONE COMMUNITY,

FROM BIRTH THROUGH GRADUATION AND INTO ADULTHOOD.

SO OUR GOAL IS TO REALLY CONNECT WITH CITY AND COUNTY SERVICE

PROVIDERS AND INSURING THAT WE'RE A GOOD PARTNER,

AND THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS A PART OF THE LARGER VISION FOR

THE COMMUNITY AND ITS YOUTH.

HELENE: I KNOW THAT FOR DISTRICT FAMILIES,

ONE THING THAT THEY HAVE HEARD BEFORE IS THAT PHRASE,

"IT TAKES EVERYBODY."

IT TAKES EVERYBODY TO HELP BRING ABOUT CHANGE.

I THINK THAT THEME IS UNDERSTANDABLE.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE, BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK THE DISTRICT HAS TO

OWN IN ORDER TO DO THIS WORK AND REALLY BE TRANSPARENT ABOUT IT?

BARBARA: THAT'S A REALLY GOOD QUESTION,

BECAUSE THE PART THAT WE OWN IS REALLY WHAT I CALL THE CENTRAL

CORE OF THE WORK.

AND THAT'S REALLY TEACHING AND LEARNING THE QUALITY OF OUR

CURRICULUM AND MAKING SURE THAT IT'S RELEVANT,

THAT IT'S RIGOROUS, THAT WE'RE VERY MINDFUL OF STUDENT VOICE,

STUDENT CHOICE, PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN,

WHICH IS PROVIDING ADEQUATE SUPPORTS FOR ALL STUDENTS,

BUT MAKING SURE EVERY CHILD HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE IN A

CLASSROOM AND IN A SCHOOL THAT'S VERY HIGH QUALITY,

AND CAN ENGAGE THEM IN GREAT LEARNING.

HELENE: ON TERMS OF CURRICULUM, AND I KNOW SOMETHING YOU'VE

DONE, YOU SAID YOU'VE REALLY TAKEN THIS PAST YEAR TO GET A

SCOPE ON WHERE THINGS STAND WITH THE DISTRICT,

AND ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT YOU'VE DONE INCLUDES A RECENT

REPORT RELEASED THIS SPRING.

THE DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE COVERED IT RECENTLY AS WELL.

AND THIS WAS REALLY, YOU WANTED TO FIND OUT,

YOU REQUESTED THIS REVIEW OF HOW IS SPECIAL EDUCATION CURRENTLY

WORKING IN THE DISTRICT.

THE SCHOOL SYSTEM HAS NOT RECEIVED GLOWING REVIEWS IN THE

PAST WITH SPECIAL ED.

IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'VE COVERED ON THIS PROGRAM BEFORE.

THERE WERE 14 REVIEWS RELEASED, AND I WILL SUMMARIZE HERE FOR

THE SAKE OF THE TIME, BUT THERE WERE THREE POINTS I WANTED

TO MAKE.

ONE, THE REFERRAL RATE FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION HAS INCREASED

93 PERCENT OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS.

TWO, THE DISTRICT LACKS CULTURALLY INFORMED PRACTICES TO

PROMOTE EQUITY AND ACCESS FOR STUDENTS OF ALL RACES

AND ETHNICITIES.

THREE, THE DISTRICT DOESN'T USE ITS DATA TO ACT UPON OR CHANGE

THE CURRENT INEFFECTIVE PRACTICES IN BOTH ACADEMIC AND

BEHAVIOR, THAT'S IN THE GENERAL POPULATION AND SPECIAL

EDUCATION STUDENTS.

YOU WERE A FORMER SPECIAL EDUCATION COUNSELOR.

BASED ON THAT, WHAT WERE YOUR INITIAL THOUGHTS WHEN YOU SAW

THIS REPORT?

BARBARA: SO I THINK THE REPORT REFLECTS REALITY FOR US.

THOSE POINTS ARE ABSOLUTELY ACCURATE.

THE REASONS FOR THEM ARE VARIED.

BUT WHAT'S IMPORTANT IS THAT THE SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES AND

SUPPORTS ARE REALLY DESIGNED TO ENSURE EACH CHILD HAS ACCESS TO

HIGH QUALITY CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION AND ACHIEVES AT THE

LEVEL THEY ARE BEST ABLE TO ACHIEVE AT.

SO WE KNOW THAT WE HAVE STUDENTS THAT ARE VERY FRAGILE,

STUDENTS THAT ARE VERY VULNERABLE,

STUDENTS THAT ARE GOING TO LIVE IN GROUP SETTINGS,

AND THOSE STUDENTS NEED TO BE GIVEN HIGH QUALITY SERVICES AND

SUPPORTS BY HIGHLY SPECIALIZED CLASSROOMS.

WE ALSO KNOW THAT WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO HAVE THE CAPACITY

TO BE COLLEGE AND CAREER READY.

AND THE PURPOSE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION IS REALLY TO ALLOW

THEM TO HAVE FULL ACCESS TO THE GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES

AND CURRICULUM.

SO THE QUALITY OF SPECIAL EDUCATION IS VERY DEPENDENT ON

THE QUALITY OF THE PRESCHOOL EXPERIENCES IN EARLY EDUCATION.

THE ABILITY OF A DISTRICT TO IDENTIFY QUICKLY IF A STUDENT IS

NOT ACHIEVING IN LITERACY OR MATHEMATICS OR IN ANOTHER AREA,

OR IF THEY HAVE A SPEECH AND LANGUAGE ISSUE.

IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT AND CRITICAL THAT A SCHOOL DISTRICT

FUND EARLY INTERVENTION AND PRE-REFERRAL SERVICES.

THOSE ARE THINGS THAT WERE REDUCED IN PRIOR BUDGETS

IN ROCHESTER.

AND I THINK PEOPLE SAW ME THIS YEAR REALLY WORKING THE BUDGET

TO TRY AND MAKE SURE THAT WE WERE MINDFUL OF NEEDING LITERACY

TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS AND SOCIAL WORKERS TO REALLY FOCUS

EARLY ON INTERVENING BEFORE THE GAP IN LEARNING BECOMES SUCH

THAT IT REQUIRES EXTRA SUPPORT AND SERVICES.

SPECIAL EDUCATION IS REALLY ABOUT CURRICULUM AND

INSTRUCTION, AND ENSURING THAT THE CHILD HAS ACCESS TO THE

KINDS OF CLASSROOMS THAT ALL OF US WOULD WANT FOR OUR

OWN CHILDREN.

UNFORTUNATELY, IT'S ALSO A BUREAUCRATIC PAPERWORK ISSUE IN

A DISTRICT THIS LARGE.

SOMETIMES THOSE KINDS OF SYSTEMS,

IF THEY'RE NOT WELL DESIGNED AND THEY'RE NOT DIGITIZED,

CAN BECOME A BARRIER TO FOCUSING ON THE RIGHT WORK,

WHICH IS TEACHING AND LEARNING.

HELENE: YOU TALKED ABOUT EARLY INTERVENTION.

LET'S LOOK AT THOSE STUDENTS WHO ARE IN SECONDARY SCHOOL,

WE'RE TALKING MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THAT ARE WITHIN

THE SPECIAL ED PROGRAM OR HAVE BEEN CLASSIFIED.

BASED ON THE INFORMATION YOU SEE IN THIS REPORT,

HOW THEN CAN YOU INSURE WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT,

WHO ARE YOU REACHING OUT TO, WHAT'S HAPPENING MOVING FORWARD

TO MAKE SURE THAT HIGH QUALITY LEARNING IS IN FACT BEING

DELIVERED AND THE BUREAUCRATIC PAPERWORK AS YOU MENTIONED IS

BEING DEALT WITH TOO?

BARBARA: SO THAT IS ACTUALLY A FOCUS FOR US,

SECONDARY EDUCATION.

SO YOU KNOW APPLYING EARLY INTERVENTION STRATEGIES IS A

LONG TERM APPROACH, BUT I'M NOT THAT PATIENT.

SO WE'VE ALSO REALLY FOCUSED ON ADDING WHAT WE'RE CALLING

TWILIGHT ACADEMIES TO ALL OF OUR SECONDARY SCHOOLS.

THAT'S AN ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO ACCELERATE THEIR

LEARNING AND BE ABLE TO CATCH UP ON CREDITS AND LEARNING THAT

THEY HAVE MISSED OR WHERE THERE ARE GAPS.

WE'RE ALSO GOING TO FOCUS VERY HEAVILY ON CAREER AND

TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

WE BELIEVE THAT STUDENTS NEED AN OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY LEARNING,

TO PROVIDE HANDS ON LEARNING, AND I THINK THE REPORT ALSO

IDENTIFIES THAT AS AN OPPORTUNITY.

PROVIDING THE PROPER OPPORTUNITY AND SUPPORT FOR SECONDARY

STUDENTS TO CATCH UP IS CRITICAL.

THE CHANCES OF A CHILD DROPPING OUT ARE VERY HIGH IF THEY DON'T

ATTAIN FIVE OR SIX CREDITS BY THE END OF FRESHMAN YEAR.

SO WE HAVE BEEN FOCUSING THIS YEAR ON CREDIT ACCRUAL AND

ENSURING THAT STUDENTS THAT HAVE A FAILURE IN MARKING PERIOD ONE

ARE GIVEN IMMEDIATE SUPPORT SO THAT WE CAN PREVENT THOSE GAPS

MOVING FORWARD.

HELENE: WELL ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS ADDRESSED IN THIS

REPORT THAT I MENTIONED WITH THE CONCLUSIONS WAS EQUITY,

ISSUES WITH EQUITY.

THIS WAS SOMETHING I RECENTLY DISCUSSED WITH SOCIOLOGIST AND

DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR OF EDUCATION PEDRO NOGUERA AT UCLA.

HE JOINED EAST HIGH SUPERINTENDENT SHAWN NELMS HERE

ON THE PROGRAM.

AND WE LOOKED AT EQUITY AND ALSO THE OPPORTUNITY GAP

IN EDUCATION.

AND I WANT TO TAKE A LOOK AT A CLIP FOR YOU TO SEE.

IT'S WHAT PEDRO IN PARTICULAR HAD TO SAY.

(PEDRO NOGUERA) WE'VE BEEN FOCUSED AS A NATION ON THE

ACHIEVEMENT GAP FOR MANY YEARS NOW.

AND THOSE ARE THE PRONOUNCED AND PREDICTABLE DISPARITIES IN

ACHIEVEMENT THAT TEND TO CORRESPOND TO RACE AND CLASS.

WHAT WE HAVEN'T FOCUSED ON ARE THE OPPORTUNITY GAPS THAT ALSO

CORRESPOND TO THE ACHIEVEMENT GAPS.

AND WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, IT'S ALMOST OBVIOUS THAT THE

SAME KIDS THAT ARE UNDER PERFORMING ACADEMICALLY HAVE

BASIC NEEDS THAT AREN'T BEING MET.

THEY DON'T HAVE ADEQUATE HEALTH CARE,

DON'T HAVE ADEQUATE NUTRITION, BUT ON TOP OF THAT THEY ALSO GO

TO SCHOOLS THAT ARE UNDER RESOURCED.

THEY DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO LAB EQUIPMENT,

THEY DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO THE COURSES THEY NEED OR SOMETIMES

EVEN TEACHERS THAT ARE QUALIFIED TO TEACH THOSE COURSES.

IF YOU DON'T CLOSE THOSE OPPORTUNITY GAPS,

THERE'S NO WAY YOU'RE GOING TO SEE A REDUCTION IN THE

DISPARITIES AND OUTCOMES.

AND SO WHAT WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO DRAW ATTENTION TO IS THAT DOING

MORE WORK ON THE OPPORTUNITY DISPARITIES WILL HELP US IN THE

LONG RUN TO CREATE SCHOOLS THAT ARE MORE EQUITABLE AND THAT

PRODUCE BETTER OUTCOMES FOR ALL KINDS OF KIDS.

(HELENE) SO BARBARA, THE FIRST THING HE MENTIONED IS AS A

NATION, WE'VE BEEN SO FOCUSED ON THIS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT GAP

AND NOT SO MUCH ASKING ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY GAP,

AND I WANT TO ASK YOU FIRST, WHEN YOU HEAR WHAT HE HAD TO SAY

IN TERMS OF EQUITY AND THOSE GAPS, WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSE?

(DEANE-WILLIAMS) ONE HUNDRED PER CENT IN ALIGNMENT AND AGREEMENT.

PEDRO I HAVE ACTUALLY WORKED WITH IN THE PAST.

WHEN HE WAS AT STEINHART, WE WORKED WITH HIM.

STEINHART IS CURRENTLY WORKING WITH ROCHESTER CITY SCHOOLS.

SO HE'S ABSOLUTELY CORRECT AND THE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS MODEL THAT

ROCHESTER IS EMPLOYING RIGHT NOW TO INTEGRATE THOSE SOCIAL

SERVICES, MEDICAL SERVICES, AND NUTRITIONAL SERVICES IS ONE WAY

TO ENSURE THE OPPORTUNITY.

THE OTHER WAY IS TO ENSURE WE ARE VERY MINDFUL OF MAKING

CERTAIN WE HAVE HIGH QUALITY COURSES.

WE HAVE ALMOST TRIPLED THE NUMBER OF ADVANCED PLACEMENT

COURSES NEXT YEAR, AND JUST WANNA MAKE SURE THAT OUR

STUDENTS ARE GAINING ACCESS TO THOSE HIGH QUALITY CLASSROOMS,

PROGRAMS, LABS, CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS.

ALL OF THAT REQUIRES SOME FUNDING AND SOME CAPACITY TO

SUSTAIN THOSE OPPORTUNITIES IN AN URBAN SETTING.

I WOULD SAY THAT HE IS ACCURATE IN THAT WE HAVE TO BE MINDFUL OF

THAT AS WELL.

BUT IT'S MULTI-FACETED, SO WHILE WE CAN HAVE THOSE ADDITIONAL

RESOURCES, AND WE CAN HAVE THOSE ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES,

YOU STILL HAVE TO HAVE A SYSTEM WITH STAFF AND LEADERS AND

COMMUNITY ADVOCATES WHO ARE REALLY FOCUSED ON ENSURING THAT

THOSE OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE TO EACH AND EVERY

CHILD, REGARDLESS OF RACE, GENDER, OR LANGUAGE STATUS.

(HELENE) AND SPEAKING OF ONE OF THE GREATEST DISPARITIES IN OUR

CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT, IT IS SOMETHING WE FOCUS ON AGAIN ON

NEED TO KNOW, IS THE STATE OF BLACK AND LATINO MALE STUDENTS

IN THE CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM.

WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES IN REGARDS TO THE OPPORTUNITY GAP,

IN PARTICULAR FOR MINORITY MALE STUDENTS IN THE CITY

SCHOOL SYSTEM?

(DEANE-WILLIAMS) WELL, OF COURSE WE'RE VERY ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN

THE MY BROTHER'S KEEPER INITIATIVE,

IN ALIGNMENT WITH BOTH THE FEDERAL AND THE STATE WORK IN

THE AREA.

THERE ARE SPECIFIC STANDARDS THAT APPLY TO SCHOOLS AND

CLASSROOMS AROUND SERVING MALES OF COLOR, BLACK MALES.

THOSE STANDARDS ARE UTILIZED AS WE ARE PLANNING SERVICES

AND SUPPORTS.

WE HAVE A NUMBER OF GRANTS, WE HAVE A NUMBER OF STAFF MEMBERS

IN SCHOOLS THAT ARE DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN ENSURING THAT WE

IMPROVE OPPORTUNITIES AND THAT WE IMPROVE OUTCOMES FOR

ALL STUDENTS.

(HELENE) ONE THING THAT I KNOW THAT YOU'VE DONE IS,

A FOCUS FOR YOU HAS BEEN IMPROVING RELATIONSHIPS,

MINDSETS, AND BUILDING TRUST.

AND THIS IS REALLY WITH EVERY LEVEL WITHIN THE DISTRICT,

WE'RE TALKING TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS, STUDENTS,

AND ALSO THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE.

AND I WANTED TO ASK YOU, WHAT DOES BUILDING TRUST AND

IMPROVING THESE RELATIONSHIPS, WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE

FOR YOU?

AND I ASK YOU THIS BECAUSE THESE FOCUS AREAS,

THEY MAKE A LOT OF SENSE.

BUT I WANT TO KNOW HOW DO YOU ACTUALLY MAKE IT HAPPEN WHEN

HISTORY MAY HAVE CREATED A BIT OF SKEPTICISM WITH SOME OF THE

PARTIES INVOLVED?

(DEANE-WILLIAMS) SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I KNOW,

THERE'S A BOOK CALLED THE SPEED OF TRUST.

YOU HAVE TO GET TO WORK.

YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO WALK INTO A SYSTEM AND BEGIN TO DO THE WORK:

TO BUILD COHERENCE, TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS,

BUT TO GET FOCUSED ON MAKING THINGS HAPPEN.

ONCE YOU DEMONSTRATE THAT YOU HAVE A CAPACITY AND A

WILLINGNESS TO DIG IN, MAKE A DIFFERENCE, TRY SOMETHING.

WE'RE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO UNDO YEARS AND DECADES IN A

YEAR OR TWO.

BUT WHAT I HOPE TO BUILD TO CAPACITY WITHIN THE SYSTEM TO BE

A GOOD PARTNER TO THE CITY, AND ALL OF OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS,

OUR COUNTY PARTNERS, THERE'S A LOT OF SUPPORT HERE IN ROCHESTER

FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES.

BUT WE HAVE TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS AND COHERENCE SO

THAT WE'RE WORKING TOGETHER.

YESTERDAY I WAS WITH A BUNCH OF COUNTY AND CITY PARTNERS AND

EVERYBODY IS WORKING ON VERY HIGH QUALITY INITIATIVES,

BUT THEY ARE NOT ALWAYS ALIGNED IN A WAY TO GET THE KIND OF

COLLECTIVE IMPACT THAT WE NEED TO SEE AND THAT OUR

YOUTH DESERVE.

SO VERY FOCUSED NOT ONLY ON THE GROUND LEVEL IN TERMS OF

DEVELOPING THOSE RELATIONSHIPS AND SORT OF DIGGING IN,

BUT ALSO ON A SYSTEMS LEVEL, OF TRYING TO FIND THE PATH FORWARD.

I THINK THAT'S THE BEST THING WE CAN DO RIGHT NOW IS JUST GET TO

WORK AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

(HELENE) WHEN YOU SAY SYSTEMS LEVEL BY THAT YOU MEAN...?

(DEANE-WILLIAMS) INTEGRATING SYSTEMS.

MAKING SURE THAT WE UNDERSTAND WHEN WE TALK ABOUT ATTENDANCE,

WE HAVE FOCUSED A LOT ON EARLY EDUCATION,

MAKING SURE STUDENTS DEVELOP GOOD ATTENDANCE PATTERNS.

BUT WE ALSO IN OUR DISTRICT HAVE SECONDARY STUDENTS THAT DON'T

ATTEND SCHOOL.

AND WE HAVE SECONDARY STUDENTS WHO DON'T ATTEND CLASSES BECAUSE

THEY'RE IN THE DISCIPLINE SYSTEM.

AND WE HAVE KIDS THAT DON'T COME TO SCHOOL BUT WE'RE NOT DOING

THE LEVEL OF HOME VISIT OR INTEGRATION.

WE SHOULD NOT BE RELYING ON THE COURT SYSTEM.

WE SHOULD NOT BE RELYING ON THE SYSTEMS WE HAVE TO PUT IN PLACE

ONCE WE HAVEN'T DONE THE RIGHT WORK OF PREVENTION.

WHEN A STUDENT IS MISSING FROM SCHOOL ON THE SECOND AND THIRD

DAY, WE NEED TO BE PICKING UP THE PHONE, MAKING A CALL,

OR GOING AND GETTING IN THE CAR AND GOING AND FINDING OUT WHAT

WE NEED TO DO SPECIFICALLY FOR THAT CHILD.

THIS IS VERY PERSONAL WORK, AND IT HAS TO OCCUR ONE STUDENT AT A

TIME, ONE FAMILY AT A TIME, ONE SCHOOL AT A TIME.

BUT IF EVERYBODY COLLECTIVELY FOCUSES ON DOING THE RIGHT WORK

FOR KIDS, THEN I BELIEVE THAT AS A COMMUNITY WE CAN PULL TOGETHER

AND REALLY SEE SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT.

I THINK WE HAVE SOME PARTNERS THAT HAVE BEEN UNDERUTILIZED.

WE'RE LOOKING TO INCLUDE FAITH BASED PARTNERS.

WE HAVE A NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE DISTRICT,

ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO HAVE LEAD THE ATTENDANCE DISTRICT IN THE

LAST SEVERAL YEARS.

VERY, VERY DEDICATED AND COMMITTED PARTNERS THROUGHOUT

THE SYSTEM, THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT,

AND THROUGHOUT THE CITY.

I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT WHAT THEY'VE DONE,

BUT I ALSO CAN SAY I'M EXCITED ABOUT THE KINDS OF THINGS

THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT TO PUT IN PLACE NEXT YEAR THAT WE'LL

STRENGTHEN AND EXPAND UPON THAT WORK AND DRAW MORE PEOPLE

INTO THE TABLE.

(HELENE) I WANT TO TELL YOU, BARBARA,

ONE THING THAT WE DO ON THIS PROGRAM IS WE HAVE A SERIES

THAT'S CALLED TOP OF THE CLASS.

SO WHAT THIS IS REALLY IS, IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO INTRODUCE OUR

COMMUNITY TO YOUNG PEOPLE NOT ONLY MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN

THEIR SCHOOL SETTING, BUT ALSO MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN MONROE

COUNTY AS A WHOLE.

BUT REALLY THESE ARE THE TYPES OF STORIES SOMETIMES WE DON'T

HEAR ABOUT ENOUGH IN NEWS, SHOWING PROGRESS THAT'S

BEEN MADE.

AND THAT BEING SAID, I IMAGINE THERE ARE ALSO HIGHLIGHTS WITHIN

THE DISTRICT THAT WE DON'T HEAR ABOUT AS OFTEN ABOUT ON THE NEWS

BECAUSE WE'RE COVERING OTHER DISTRICT MATTERS.

SO THAT BEING SAID, WHAT IS AN AREA OF PROGRESS AND MAYBE IT'S

ABOUT EXPANDING UPON SOME OF THE THINGS YOU JUST MENTIONED,

SOME OF THE THINGS THESE PARTNERS ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO

DOING NEXT YEAR, BUT SOMETHING THAT HAS GONE UNDER THE RADAR

WHEN IT COMES TO LOCAL NEWS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS.

(DEANE-WILLIAMS) I THINK THAT THE WORK THAT'S BEING DONE WITH

THE RELATIONSHIP BUILDING MODEL, SOME OF THE WORK ON CULTURALLY

RELEVANT AND SIGNIFICANT CURRICULUM,

AND THE USE OF STUDENT VOICE.

I HAVE MET SOME INCREDIBLE STUDENTS AND SOME INCREDIBLE

PARENTS WHO ARE VERY ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

AND THEY COME FROM SITUATIONS WHERE QUITE FRANKLY,

THEY FACED A LOT OF ADVERSITY.

AND THEY HAD TO OVERCOME THAT ADVERSITY.

AND WHAT'S REALLY AMAZING TO ME, IS THEIR WILLINGNESS TO TALK

ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE AND TO SHARE THE EXPERIENCE WITH OTHERS

TO HELP US LEARN FROM IT.

BECAUSE IT'S THROUGH THAT STORY OF INDIVIDUAL CHILDREN,

INDIVIDUAL FAMILIES THAT WE COLLECTIVELY BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND

THE POWERFUL IMPACT THAT PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAVE: CLASSROOMS,

TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS, ASK ANYONE A STORY ABOUT THEIR

SCHOOL DAYS AND IT COMES BACK WITH POWER,

AND THEY'RE NOT ALWAYS POSITIVE.

MY GOAL WOULD BE TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERY CHILD'S STORY IN

ROCHESTER IS A POSITIVE STORY.

(HELENE) WITH MANY OF SOME OF THESE STORIES THAT YOU HEAR,

WITH ANY OF THESE STORIES THAT YOU HEAR ALSO HELP TO GUIDE YOU

WITH THE PLANNING THAT'S BEEN TAKING PLACE AT THE CURRICULUM

LEVEL, SCHOOL LEVEL, DISTRICT LEVEL.

(DEANE-WILLIAMS) ABSOLUTELY.

SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT'S IMPORTANT TO ME WITH I MEET WITH

STUDENTS, WE HAVE REALLY TRIED TO FOCUS ON GETTING INTO SCHOOLS

ON A REGULAR BASIS, 2-3 DAYS A WEEK, TALKING TO TEACHERS,

TALKING TO LEADERS, BUT ALSO TALKING TO STUDENTS,

FROM THE VERY YOUNGEST STUDENTS TO THOSE THAT ARE IN

HIGH SCHOOL.

WE ALSO HAVE ENGAGED STUDENTS IN STAFF TRAINING AND

STAFF DEVELOPMENT.

WE HAVE LEADERSHIP TRAINING AND TEACHER TRAINING COMING UP

IN THE SUMMER.

THERE WILL BE STUDENTS AND PARENTS AND COMMUNITY RESIDENTS

AT THOSE TRAININGS BECAUSE IT'S IMPORTANT FOR ME THAT WE ALL

COMMUNICATE AND DIALOGUE AND LEARN TOGETHER,

SO THAT WE'RE CREATING ONE COHESIVE SYSTEM.

(HELENE) WELL SUPERINTENDENT OF THE ROCHESTER CITY SCHOOL

DISTRICT BARBARA DEANE-WILLIAMS, IT WAS GREAT TO HAVE YOU

ON THE SHOW-

(DEANE-WILLIAMS) THANK YOU.

(HELENE) -AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING YOU BACK SOON.

(DEANE-WILLIAMS) THANK YOU. APPRECIATE IT.

THESE ARE SOME OF THE HOBBIES OF POLITICAL LEADERS IN OUR NATION

THAT GIVE US JUST A LITTLE INSIGHT INTO THE PERSON BEHIND

THE POLITICIAN.

BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR LOCAL POLITICAL FIGURES?

IT CAN BE RARE TO GET A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK OF THEIR THEIR

LIVES....UNTIL NOW.

A SPECIAL SEGMENT ON "NEED TO KNOW" THIS SUMMER WILL TAKE US

INSIDE THE LIVES OF CANDIDATES IN THE RACE FOR ROCHESTER MAYOR.

THE FOCUS: GETTING TO KNOW THEM THROUGH ONE OF THEIR

FAVORITE PASTIMES.

FIRST UP, DEMOCRAT RACHEL BARNHART.

FROM TELEVISION REPORTS....TO TOWN HALL FORUMS - DEMOCRAT

RACHEL BARNHART HAS FULLY TRANSITIONED FROM INVESTIGATING

AND INTERVIEWING POLITICAL CANDIDATES TO BECOMING ONE.

BUT SAYING GOODBYE TO A CAREER IN JOURNALISM IN 2016 AND

RUNNING FOR PUBLIC OFFICE DOESN'T MEAN EVERYTHING IN HER

LIFE HAS CHANGED. "I READ THE NEWS A LOT. GO FIGURE.

WALL STREET JOURNAL, NY TIMES, WASHINGTON POST.

I CATCH UP ON WHAT'S GOING ON I STILL REALLY WANT TO

BE INFORMED."

THE MAYORAL CANDIDATE ALSO MAINTAINS A REGULAR PRESENCE ON

SOCIAL MEDIA....AND SHE'S STILL OFTEN SPOTTED IN HER BEECHWOOD

NEIGHBORHOOD WALKING THIS SHOW-STOPPER...HER 136-POUND

NEAPOLITAN MASTIFF NAMED PIXIE.

AND WHEN IT COMES TO BARNHART'S FAVORITE PAST-TIMES....THAT

HASN'T CHANGED EITHER.

"IT'S MY TIME, IT'S ALONE TIME.

NO ONE CAN CALL ME.

I CAN'T CALL ANYONE ELSE."

THE MAYORAL CANDIDATE IS AN AVID SWIMMER.

THREE TO FOUR DAYS A WEEK SHE SWIMS 25-HUNDRED YARDS AT THE

DOWNTOWN Y-M-C-A ON EAST MAIN STREET.

"I WILL SAY WHEN I SWIM I OFTEN SOLVE PROBLEMS,

I'VE WRITTEN SPEECHES IN MY HEAD,

I'VE WRITTEN STORIES IN MY HEAD, BUT IT'S MY TIME,

IT CAN BE VERY MEDITATIVE.

SO MUCH IS GOING ON IN THE WORLD THAT IT'S HARD TO TURN IT OFF

ESPECIALLY WHEN WE HAVE OUR SMARTPHONES AND I'M DEFINITELY

GLUED TO MY SMARTPHONE, BUT YOU CAN'T BRING YOUR PHONE WITH YOU

IN THE WATER."

AS A CHILD, BARNHART LEARNED HOW TO SWIM AT HER NEIGHBORHOOD Y

IN MAPLEWOOD.

AT THE AGE OF SEVEN SHE JOINED THE MAPLEWOOD Y SWIM TEAM AND

BEGAN TO SWIM COMPETITIVELY...BUT TODAY...SHE

SAYS SWIMMING IS ABOUT COMPETING AGAINST HERSELF AND STAYING

HEALTHY....AND SPEAKING OF SELF-COMPETITION,

IN JUST A FEW WEEKS THE MAYORAL CANDIDATE WILL SET OUT FOR A

SUMMER RITUAL.

"I SWIM ACROSS IRONDEQUOIT BAY AT LEAST ONCE.

I HAVE A FRIEND WITH A BOAT AND HER FATHER HE FOLLOWS US WHILE

WE SWIM ACROSS THE BAY AND BACK AND IT'S ABOUT A MILE TOTAL.

AND IT'S HARD BECAUSE YOU'VE GOT THE WIND AND THE WAVES,

OPEN WATER SWIMMING IS NOT NECESSARILY WHAT I'M GOOD AT BUT

IT'S A GREAT EXPERIENCE."

WHETHER AT THE Y OR CROSSING THE IRONDEQUOIT BAY,

BARNHART SAYS SWIMMING ALLOWS TO HER

TO RELAX, FOCUS AND AT TIMES PUT LIFE INTO PERSPECTIVE....

ONE LAP AT A TIME.

ALL OF THE CANDIDATES IN THE RACE FOR ROCHESTER MAYOR HAVE

BEEN INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS SPECIAL SEGMENT.

THOSE TAKING US UP ON THE OFFER TO REMOVE THEIR "POLITICAL HAT"

AND SHARE A MORE PERSONAL SIDE OF THEIR LIVES ARE DOING SO

THIS SUMMER.

YOU CAN SEE THESE SPECIAL SEGMENTS ONLY HERE ON "NEED TO

KNOW" LEADING UP TO THE PRIMARY ELECTION IN SEPTEMBER.

AND THAT WRAPS UP THIS EDITION OF "NEED TO KNOW" - ROCHESTER'S

NEWS MAGAZINE.

Vauxhall Movano van review car

The Vauxhall Movano offers a wide range of front and rear-wheel-drive panel vans with strong Bi-Turbo engines at the top of the line-up. For:. Huge choice of body sizes and weights, excellent cab. Against:.

Limited engine power for a 4. Many new cars may boast of vast levels of choice and personalisation in their model ranges, but nothing gives you the freedom that a good panel van does. The Vauxhall Movano is one such van.

Or rather its several such vans, as it shares its platform with two virtually identical load-luggers - the Renault Master and the Nissan NV400.

The Movano doesnt just have its sister vehicles as rivals, though - the large panel van class is hotly contested, with the Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, Volkswagen Crafter and Citroen Relay/Peugeot Boxer/Fiat Ducato all compete for a slice of the same pie.

Vauxhalls trump card is the sheer level of choice in the Movano range though. Its offered in four body lengths and three roof heights giving load volumes of 7.8m3 to 17m3.

Not only that, but there are four engine choices, front and rear-wheel-drive options and an optional automatic gearbox.

Still not enough? Well, you can also get your Movano with extra seats - theres a double crew cab option, six and nine-seat Combi models or even a full-sized 17-seat minibus.

The engines are all 2.3-litre CDTi common-rail diesels with varying levels of power. The engine line-up was bolstered by the addition of Bi-Turbo versions of the 2.3 CDTi unit that add extra muscle at the top of the Movano range.

Most models get a 6-speed manual gearbox but Vauxhall's TecShift automated manual box is an option too. It's offered with the mid-range 2.3 CDTi 125 engine.

The Vauxhall Movano has been around for a while and doesn't feel as modern and polished as some of the newer arrivals on the panel van scene.

It is a tough customer, however, and the arrival of the Bi-Turbo engines has boosted its capabilities further. The big Vauxhall remains a popular choice with operators. MPG and Running Costs.

The Movano is offered with 108bhp, 125bhp, 134bhp and 161bhp versions of the firm's 2.3-litre diesel engine, in both front and rear-drive models.

All are turbocharged common-rail diesels but the CDTi 136 (134bhp) and CDTi 163 (161bhp) are Bi-Turbo units with a pair of turbos providing boost.

All three engines drive through a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, though a Tecshift six-speed automated gearbox is also available with the 125bhp engine.

Vauxhall's ecoFLEX fuel-saving technology, including stop-start, is also available on some models with all of the newer Bi-Turbo units getting it.

All models offer competitive fuel figures, with front-drive and rear-wheel-drive Movanos offering combined economy figure in the 29-41mpg range. Emissions range from 184g/km on the ecoFLEX models to 249g/km for the heaviest rear-drive vans.

That's similar to the rear-drive-only Mercedes Sprinter and VW Crafter, though the Mercedes offers higher engine outputs and the VW runs smaller 20-litre diesel engines. Service intervals for the Movano are set at 25,000 miles or two years.

Load Space and Practicality. Theres a Vauxhall Movano to suit almost every eventuality. With four body lengths, three roof heights, front and rear-drive chassis, the Movano delivers load volumes of 7.8-170 cubic metres.

If even thats not enough, the Movano is available as a chassis cab for conversion to a Luton box van or light truck.

As well as tackling the highly competitive 3,500kg market in both front and rear drive, the Movano goes right up to 4,500kg gross weight and, with a 3,000kg trailer limit, can offer a train weight of 7,500kg.

Vauxhall offers half-height protective panels in the Movano's load area as part of the standard package on rear-drive models. Full-height ply lining is available on all Movanos as an option.

Protective floor coverings are also offered, or you can opt for an anti-slip floor with built-in fixing rails, with anchor points every 25mm. Side wall anchor rails, movable partitions and a telescopic blocking bar system are offered for improved load retention.

All Movano vans have a full-height steel bulkhead. Vauxhall offers double-cab models on the L2Hs and L3H2 front-drive chassis, or the L3H2 rear-drive model.

The double cab has four individual rear seats and a bulkhead, providing safe transport for up to seven people and a secure storage area in the rear.

For greater versatility, there are also Combi versions with second and third rows of seating for three, providing six or nine-seat layouts, with the ability to remove seating when greater load space is required.

If additional load carrying capability is needed, there are roof bars and roof tray racks on offer, with a rear-door steel ladder available, allowing up to 200kg to be carried on the roof. Vauxhall Movano cargo bed.

A heavy-duty towing hook can also be factory supplied. Vauxhall also offers a range of conversions based on the Movano chassis, including single and double-cab tippers and dropsides, and a box van.

These core conversions carry the same three-year/100,000-mile warranty as the standard panel van. An ESP-Plus electronic stability programme is standard on all rear-wheel -drive models and comes as a £400 option on front-drive vans.

ESP-Plus reduces throttle response and varies the braking force to each wheel when a loss of traction is detected, ensuring that the driver remains in control at all times.

A driver's airbag is standard, with a passenger bag, and driver and passenger side-impact airbags available as options.

Other safety additions include reverse parking sensors (£265), a speed limiter (£75) and a lighting pack (£245) that includes static cornering lights, where, depending on vehicle speed and steering angle, an additional light illuminates the corner of the road during turning.

The Movano is sturdily built, with a durable cab that can take the rigours of everyday life. The CDTi engine has chain-driven cams, so you should have no concerns about belt changes.

Oil change intervals of 25,000 miles or two years, along with a 100,000-mile warranty, suggest strong reliability.

The Movano is a good van to drive, with a commanding driving position and a comfortable cab. The steering is on the light side, which is good in town but doesn't provide much reassurance on the open road.

All four engines have a decent combination of power and economy. The 108bhp CDTi 110 opens proceedings and will be fine for light duty work.

The CDTi 125 model is offered with the TecShift self-shifting gearbox that isn't the smoothest of its type but does take the strain out of down driving and multi-drop work.

At the upper end of the range are the Bi-Turbo CDTi units, The CDTi 136 (134bhp and the range-topping CDTi 163 with 161bhp. These are impressive powerplants with plenty of low-down muscle and decent refinement.

Both front and rear-drive Movanos handle well, with powerful brakes and relatively supple suspension, even when unladen. Those looking for increased off-road traction or stronger towing capability can specify a heavy-duty twin-rear wheel option.

There is a rear air-suspension option (£2,000) available for 3,500kg GVW front-drive models, while rear-drive vans can be ordered with an optional locking rear differential (£500) for additional traction.

The Movano has an solid rather than spectacular cab interior, with more storage compartments, boxes and cubbies than most drivers will ever use.

For those customers using the van as a mobile office, theres even the option of a rotating laptop table on the fold-down middle seat back.

Its a bit of a climb up into the Movano cab, but the upside is excellent visibility and a commanding view of the road ahead.

A six-way adjustable driver's seat with armrest, steering-column-mounted audio controls, electric windows, and aux and USB interface with Bluetooth connectivity make the Movano very easy to live with.

Options include air-conditioning (£600), full climate control (£900), cruise control (£200) and a digital tachograph (£525). However it is worth looking at options packs as they deliver good value for money.

For example the Comfort Pack (£1,295) includes climate control, sat-nav with a remote monitor, enhanced audio with Bluetooth and aux input and four 20W speakers.

Alternatively, for the harder-working van theres a Construction Pack (£950) available for rear-drive vans that incorporates an air-suspended driver's seat, a locking rear differential and a tow bar with electrics. (Widths are body width without mirrors.
