We love to make videos that talk about parenting issues and just to help parents, you know,
to enjoy the parenting journey a little bit more.
So, let's talk about what should you pack in your hospital bag as you get ready to go
to the hospital.
First, when do you need to start packing your hospital bag?
I would suggest if you are thirty-seven weeks pregnant that you go ahead and at least have
a list of what you're going to pack in your hospital bag and I would go ahead and pack
it.
You're probably going to want to give yourself at least about 10 to 15 minutes before you
leave for the hospital to get your bag together.
I like to use a suitcase, a rolling suitcase, and that makes it really easy to transport
it from the room to your car to the hospital and in the hospital you go from triage to
your birthing room to your actual recovery room.
So it just makes it easy to travel if you're on wheels.
For me what usually works is I ask myself what is the closest item I have to me.
And in this situation the closest item I have is a trash bag on the floor.
So I'm going to pack my stuff in a trash bag.
And you might have a pillow case.
The first thing I have in here is my birth plan and that is right here and that's really
easy just to give to the nurses when we arrive at the hospital.
And then I also have any other notes that we have for birth and different positions.
We took the Bradley Method classes so we've got that right on hand to help us during labor.
The next thing that I have is just a mesh bag, a laundry bag.
You can just use a trash bag or something like that.
It's good to be able to keep your laundry separated so that you can either send it home
ahead of time with a family member or just have it separated so you're not putting the
gross dirty laundry back in your bag.
The next thing that I have is any other underwear and nursing bras or things like that that
you want to bring.
The hospital does provide underwear and that is something you will probably use from the
hospital.
If you have given birth before or heard about birth stories, they give you great big mesh
underwear and it is fabulous because you can just toss it and throw it away when you are
done.
So I suggest using the hospital's.
Really, all you're going to need is just a t-shirt, shorts, and underwear.
You may not even need that because honestly, this is the only time of the year when really
it's acceptable, and almost expected for you not to take a shower and not to change clothes.
You're going to be exhausted.
Your baby's going to be crying and screaming and chances are you're probably not going
to be changing clothes.
The next thing that I have is a boppy pillow.
The boppy pillow is used for nursing and it's great that you can have your little tiny baby,
you don't really need to support them because they're so small at this age, but what I really
like to do with it is on the hospital bed itself is just to have the boppy pillow and
I can lay my baby right here whenever brother and sister are around so that they're not
running into the baby and the baby doesn't roll off the bed or something like that when
the kids jump on because that's what kids do.
So bring a boppy pillow, you'll be thankful for it.
The next thing that I have is our toiletry bag and in that I have got some little headbands.
And these are going to be great for labor just to keep hair out of your face and I've
got a few extra little clips and anything for my hair that I might need.
But I really recommend having those headbands that keeps your hair out of your face because
you are hot and sweaty during labor and you're going to want that.
Alright, the next item that you're going to want to pack is a headband.
Now you're going to want to put this on when your wife is in labor because she's going
to be working really hard and you are going to be standing there next to her so putting
a headband on kind of just helps you look like you are doing something.
It kind of makes you feel like you're actually being active even though really all you are
going to be doing is sitting there and watching in kind of like shock.
So put a headband on.
It will make you look cooler and it will make you look like you are about to do something
active.
I also have some face cleansing towelettes.
And this is just nice because you don't have to get up and go to the bathroom to wash your
face after birth.
You won't use that probably during birth, but after birth.
I also have a full size shampoo and conditioner and body wash.
And I've got some razors in here.
I've got one for me and one for my husband.
Our toothbrushes, toothpaste.
Alright next up, it's time for you to start getting ready and packing up your bathroom
bag with all the stuff that you're going to need while you're in the hospital.
So for that you're going to want your toothbrush and your toothpaste.
And that's it.
I also have some extra contacts and some saline and an extra little contact container because
I do wear contacts.
I have an extra pair of glasses in my purse.
Which I will also throw in my hospital bag.
So it's good to make sure you have that as well.
Something during labor and after labor that you'll want are snacks.
So, I just grabbed some healthy snacks.
These are oatmeal raisin cookie bites and some crackers- peanut butter and cheese crackers,
some nuts- a little protein, and this is Dove Dark Chocolate which I've already opened because
I'm pregnant!
You'll want chocolate.
I also have in there some winter green mints and some gum.
It's really dry in the hospital and if you can keep your mouth hydrated it's really good.
Seriously, did my wife just say she was packing healthy snacks?
Okay, looks like I"m going to be needing to take a trip to the grocery store buying some
M&M's, some Skittles and some chips.
This nuts and health food stuff is not going to fly with me.
Also to keep you hydrated, I also got some Propel water.
And that has electrolytes in it and that will help me during birth and during labor.
If you stay hydrated with water and extra electrolytes then your labor is a little bit
easier.
The next item you're going to want to pack is this little thing here it's called a cup.
And in the hospital they have these things called water faucets.
And they actually dispense free water.
It's actually the only thing that's going to be at the hospital that is going to be
free.
So, you'll want to take advantage of that and bring a cup and drink as much of it as
you can.
So, what I have, I brought two sets of pajamas, and an extra cardigan and an extra nursing
tank.
I don't know if I'll need all of that, but, I just like to have it just in case.
And really that's all I wear in the hospital.
I really just wear pajamas.
Because you're not getting up going around and you want to be comfortable.
I also brought my swimsuit and I brought my husband's swimsuit.
And that's for during labor- each of our rooms has a birthing tub and I just want to be prepared
if it's something that my labor is going long and I would like to get in the birthing tub
then we'll have that option.
Alright, now apparently my wife is also packing a bathing suit for some reason.
I was not aware that they had a swimming pool at the hospital.
But, just in case, I will be bringing a floatie and some water toys and a water gun so that
we can play in the swimming pool- whenever that's going to happen.
I'm not quite sure yet.
I just have a dress and this is something that I'm comfortable in.
It fits me while I'm pregnant so, I know it will fit me after birth as well.
You still will look six to seven months pregnant whenever you get out of the hospital- So just
remember that.
For my outfit that I'm going to be wearing out of the hospital, I'm actually just going
to be wearing this pair of shorts and this t-shirt, that I picked out earlier.
Because nobody's really going to care what I look like because I haven't slept for like
two or three days and at that point I'm not even going to care what I'm going to look
like.
And I have brought the diaper bag for my son and anything that he needs is in there.
I do have a going home outfit for him as well.
So, this is his little going home outfit.
Each of my kids had a little outfit like this.
So, we'll make sure to get that on him and that's just really cute.
I also have a Wubbanub.
And they give you one of these pacis in the hospital.
But, I just like having the whole stuffed animal with me.
Because it's easy to find.
And so, I have that.
And also for him I have a nursing cover.
This is just in case I am nursing- you nurse an infant all-the-time in the hospital.
So, in case we have company or people who I don't feel comfortable nursing around or
something like that I can just throw this on and this is like a nursing shawl.
It goes completely over you and I can nurse the baby under that.
I just have that just in case I need it.
Alright the next thing I'm going to pack up here guys is headphones.
These will come in handy especially late at night when you're trying to get sleep, you're
going to want to put these in your ears because your baby is going to be crying quite a bit
and you want to make sure that you don't wake up during the night and that your wife wakes
up instead.
I also have a swaddle blanket.
This is one of the Halo Swaddle Blankets and it's in the newborn size.
It makes it really easy to swaddle the baby in the hospital.
I don't love their swaddle blankets in the hospital.
I've never really gotten the hang of it and so I prefer to use blankets that are pre-done
for you so this you just put the baby in and then you zip it up and then you wrap his arms
around.
So, it makes it really easy to swaddle the baby and I really like to have my baby swaddled.
So, I'm bringing that for the hospital as well.
Let's see, I did bring little sleepers for him.
And I brought two different sizes- I did bring newborn and I brought 0-3 months.
My babies are normally big.
However, they normally can't wear the 0-3 month, normally the newborn does fit them,
but just in case.
This is my third child and my other one was really big so, we'll see.
I do have some nursing pads in here.
And these are the Lansinoh nursing pads- I prefer these because they have the sticky
stuff on both sides so they stay put.
If I remember correctly, the hospital gives you one pair to try.
And your milk might and might not come in in the hospital.
So, you don't need a ton of these - I think I have six so, if I need to change them three
times or something like that I've got those in there.
Alright, and I'm going to just go ahead and throw this whole bucket of the baby's clothes
in the back of the car just in case some of the 200 items that she's already packed in
her bag aren't sufficient I want to make sure that I get extra stuff.
And I also have some little mittens for him so that he doesn't scratch his face.
Because they tend to do that when they are really really little.
Oh, I brought a burp cloth too because it's just cute and someone gave it to me.
So, I think that's all I brought for baby.
They really do provide everything that you need.
Something that is a little strange is that their wipes typically at hospitals are these
little cloth wipes that you put water on.
So, if it's not something that you love, I would go ahead and bring your own wipes.
I also do bring my own pads.
I have about maybe six with me.
Just because the hospital does give you the really long thick pads and you'll definitely
need those.
But, I like the ones that have the wings on them on the side so I have a few just in case
I would prefer my own as opposed to the hospitals.
I've got those in there.
Now, I heard Amy in there talking about how she's going to be bringing her pads.
I'm bringing my pads as well.
I've got an iPad Mini I'm going to be bringing and I'm also going to be bringing the iPad
Classic with me as well.
Just so that we can watch movies and play games on here.
So, make sure you get your pads as well.
Let's see, one more thing that I can think that I need to put in here are my Croc Sandals.
And the reason why I like to bring those over slippers is that I can completely sanitize
them.
I can wear them into the shower.
When I get home I can completely Lysol and disinfect them.
Because the hospital is kind of gross.
So, that's one thing I need to add in there.
I do have a list of things that I can't pack until the very end.
So, I've got that at the very top.
And some things that I have on there are our camera, my make-up bag that I mentioned, a
hair dryer and straighter, a phone charger, my glasses, my purse, my iPad and my phone,
a pillow, and also my husband's clothes and pajamas and whatever else he wants to pack
in the bag.
So, he'll pack that a little bit later.
Well, that is it.
I'm done packing my hospital bag and I'm going to go throw this in the car about five minutes
before we're ready to go.
I think that that is everything that I'm packing.
