[MUSIC]
>>NACHO VEGA: I'm Nacho Vega, and this is the IT Roadshow.
I want to take you with me as we go coast to coast, east to west, in the tricked-out
CDW Technoliner - anywhere there's going to be technology - to talk to real engineers,
real techies, see real technology in action.
So if you're ready to come geek out wit' your boy, hop on and let's go!
[MUSIC]
>>NACHO VEGA: Welcome to the "State of Hockey," right here in St. Paul, Minnesota.
[MUSIC]
We're here at Xcel Energy Center, home of the Minnesota Wild and probably the best mini
donuts in America.
But I'm not here for the mini donuts.
I'm here to check out Cisco StadiumVision and see how that technology enables fans every
day at every game to enjoy their experience, in and out of their seats.
But first, I've got to go find my home girl, Sarah, so she can tell me all about how this
technology works, right here at the X.
[MUSIC]
>>NACHO VEGA: Sarah, what's going on?
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: Hey, how's it going, Nacho? Good, how are you?
>>NACHO VEGA: I'm doing good.
I'm here to see StadiumVision, and they're telling me that you are wizardress of StadiumVision.
You have all the power.
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: Well that's what they say, let's go check out some stuff.
>>NACHO VEGA: Ok, let's do that.
[MUSIC]
>>NACHO VEGA: I see you have all the concession screens and, obviously, every one of these
vendors is different, right?
So it's different impressions for each of them.
Can you show me a little more?
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: For sure.
[MUSIC]
>>NACHO VEGA: So I see over here we've got the big, the big six-screen?
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: Yeah, so it's one of our three three-by-twos that we have in the arena.
>>NACHO VEGA: And you put your stats up there as well?
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: Yeah, stats show.
>>NACHO VEGA: I can't wait to see that.
[MUSIC]
>>NACHO VEGA: So Sarah, as we were walking around, I saw so many screens out there.
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: Yeah.
>>NACHO VEGA: How many screens do you have total here at the Xcel Energy Center?
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: So we have 530 DMPs with screens.
>>NACHO VEGA: 530. Wow!
All those screens obviously serve different signage and different parts of the venue,
and you're controlling all of that from this console right here?
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: Yep.
>>NACHO VEGA: Which is Cisco StadiumVision?
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: Yeah.
>>NACHO VEGA: So does that mean from changes from the team that's coming to play the Wild
to, I mean, anything concessions, menu changes - you can do all of that from right here?
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: Yep, that is correct.
>>NACHO VEGA: That's fantastic.
So one of the things I noticed is that you're also controlling the fun events that happen
in the game: goals, penalties...
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: I have a pre-built animation for goals and power plays.
And we have what's called an ad hoc state, so if there's a goal, I can just trigger the
goal and it replaces the L wrap on the TVs.
>>NACHO VEGA: What's your favorite thing that you have done with StadiumVision here at the
Xcel Energy arena?
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: So this year we implemented live stats into it, and, you know, a lot of
people are really into fantasy hockey and you know they want to...
>>NACHO VEGA: Guilty as charged!
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: Yep.
They want to know what the stats are.
>>NACHO VEGA: They want to know those shots on goal.
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: Right.
And on the video board, you know, you'll see the score and you'll see the shots on goal.
If you're walking out in the concourse, we'll have the live stats popping up every so often,
and you know that's going to show you face-offs won, save percentage, blocked hits...
>>NACHO VEGA: And I love that.
I saw the additional detail.
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: Now the fan experience is heightened.
They can constantly see the game.
They can see the live stats, and it's very mobile, you know.
I run it all from my laptop.
So I could be in the press box.
I could be walking around the concourse.
I could be at home if I needed to be.
>>NACHO VEGA: Mmm-hmm.
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: And I can see what each DMP is playing from my computer.
>>NACHO VEGA: It's just amazing to see how the technology - you driving the technology,
more importantly - is really contributing to helping not just get fans here, but get
fans over and over and over again and feel like the best experience to enjoy a Minnesota
Wild game is at Xcel Energy, not in your living room, which is amazing.
So I can't thank you enough for your time today, Sarah.
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: Yeah!
>>NACHO VEGA: You've showed us so much.
Thank you!
There are a lot of unsung heroes out there in IT, and that's what the IT Roadshow is
about.
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: You're going to go see another unsung hero in Jim, so have fun...
>>NACHO VEGA: I know.
>>SARAH EIKMEIER: ...chatting with him.
>>NACHO VEGA: And we are all about the unsung IT heroes, so I cannot wait to meet Jim.
So let's get out of here.
[MUSIC]
>>NACHO VEGA: Hey, Jim! They told me I could find you here, man! How are you? How's it going?
>>JIM IBISTER: It's good to see you!
>>NACHO VEGA: It's good to see you too, man!
So I've been walking around all day, man, looking at all this amazing technology,
all these amazing screens. What a beautiful venue!
I heard there's a little section over here in the club you want to show me?
>>JIM IBISTER: Yeah, it's a great little vantage point. I think you'll like what you see.
>>NACHO VEGA: Obviously, you have a very fantastic wireless system.
I've seen the StadiumVision from Sarah, all the amazing things that you provide the fans.
What, what drove you to want to bring a better fan experience?
>>JIM IBISTER: We're the "State of Hockey."
People come here to watch a hockey game.
We wanted to make sure we brought that game right out to them in all the concourse areas
and all the bars, all the lobby areas, all the special clubs so they never miss a minute
of the action.
>>NACHO VEGA: That's great.
It's empowering the fans, it's empowering the Minnesota Wild.
>>JIM IBISTER: Right.
>>NACHO VEGA: It's selling the brand of the Minnesota Wild.
>>JIM IBISTER: That's right.
>>NACHO VEGA: And it's also selling the brand of this fantastic venue, which is Xcel Energy
Center, which houses a lot more than just the 41 games...
>>JIM IBISTER: That's right! Absolutely!
>>NACHO VEGA: ...that are at home in regular season hockey.
>>JIM IBISTER: That's right.
>>NACHO VEGA: Of course, not counting preseason and the playoffs.
>>JIM IBISTER: That's right.
>>NACHO VEGA: But you guys host a lot of great concerts.
And I have to say, you know, that's a reconfiguration of facilities, maybe how you run concessions.
>>JIM IBISTER: Yep.
>>NACHO VEGA: Would you say that you've definitely leveraged the technology to make you agile
in that transformation of venue changes?
>>JIM IBISTER: Yeah, I think to some degree.
You know, it's interesting.
We want the technology to be in the building, but we don't want the technology to overtake
the building.
They're not coming to see, you know, how our wireless is set up, right?
They're not coming...
>>NACHO VEGA: That is absolutely right.
>>JIM IBISTER: ...because we have great screens.
They're coming to see that particular event.
And so everything about the technology is supportive.
>>NACHO VEGA: I don't see the technology.
>>JIM IBISTER: Right.
>>NACHO VEGA: But I know it's there working for me.
That's what's going to drive - like you were telling me - customer satisfaction.
And why is that customer satisfaction so important if that technology does or does not work?
>>JIM IBISTER: People expect the scoreboard.
They expect to see the scores.
They know they're going to have concession experiences - those kinds of things.
It's the unexpected things that stick with them.
One of the great things that we do with StadiumVision - that we perhaps wouldn't do at a concert
- would, like, throwing up stats, you know, the in-game stats, right?
>>NACHO VEGA: That was fantastic.
>>JIM IBISTER: Yeah.
>>NACHO VEGA: We were talking a little bit about that with Sarah.
>>JIM IBISTER: Right.
>>NACHO VEGA: And that something is...
>>JIM IBISTER: Yeah, and so, people will walk out, they're not going to say, "Hey, look!
Stats!"
They're going to say, "That's stats," and they're going to actually look at the stats.
>>NACHO VEGA: Yeah.
>>JIM IBISTER: You know, they're going to say this is a part of the experience and they're
going to expect that.
But for a concert - well, you don't have stats for a concert, but what you do have is you
have photo ops.
And you create enough experiences so they say, "Hey, I'm here with a friend of mine.
It's a concert I've always wanted to be at."
Now, the screens all have this backdrop of the date, the building, great pictures.
They say, "We're going to put our selfie right up against this screen."
>>NACHO VEGA: That's very, very interesting that you bring that up - that as you've thought
of all this and you've thought of the impressions, you've thought of the placement of the screens
- that you've thought about the importance of what you're doing when it's not hockey
time.
>>JIM IBISTER: Right.
>>NACHO VEGA: Or when it's not sports.
>>JIM IBISTER: Yep.
>>NACHO VEGA: And that is really providing - whether it's Kanye West or Taylor Swift
or insert your favorite artist...
>>JIM IBISTER: Yep.
>>NACHO VEGA: ...I can have that feeling that that was that concert.
>>JIM IBISTER: And the other thing, you're going to expand your social media reach a
little bit.
You know, you might be used to saying, "Okay, I'm going to take a selfie.
I'm going to put it out on Instagram, or I'm going to put it out on Twitter."
But you know, if you want, and if you want to tag that with the right hashtag, we'll put
it on...
>>NACHO VEGA: You're going to put it up in Xcel Energy Arena and you're going to...
>>JIM IBISTER: ...and we'll put it on every screen that we have in the building.
>>NACHO VEGA: Wow.
You can't make a fan feel more connected than, "I just tweeted that."
>>JIM IBISTER: Right.
And if you wanted - if you were a fan and you were looking at that and you say, "Hey,
I want to get mine on there."
Well, that's 10, 15, 100, 150, 200 more tweets and posts and things that you may not have
normally gotten. That's all.
>>NACHO VEGA: That's amazing. That's amazing. I love hearing how
technology is not just driving the fan experience, but upping the experience of the Minnesota Wild.
>>NACHO VEGA: But in the end, it's really the experience that's been brought to this
venue, and I think the beauty of it is it doesn't matter if it's hockey, if it's a concert,
it's the rodeo, it's still going to be a fantastic experience here.
And I've definitely gotten that impression from being here, Jim, so thank you so much
for your time today.
>>JIM IBISTER: Great! Absolutely!
>>NACHO VEGA: And I'll tell you what, man.
I hear you're a fan of a little sarsaparilla. Let's go get one!
>>JIM IBISTER: Let's go grab one!
>>NACHO VEGA: Let's go, my friend!
[MUSIC]
>>NACHO VEGA: Guys, unfortunately, that's a wrap for now.
But lucky for me, I'm going to see you next time on the IT Roadshow. And hey,
guess what? Come in here.
