Weekly Entertainment Wrap Up #24 [CC] - Duration: 6:36.
Hi, YouTube, it's Kathy, and this is my Weekly Entertainment Wrap Up for June 11th to 17th.
This week I read 4 books, I watched 1 tv show, I listened to 1 podcast, and I listened to
3 books.
If you saw my Library-A-Thon TBR video, 5 out of 7 of the books in this video will look incredibly
familiar, because I completed all of the challenges, and now I'm really sleepy.
I'm also going to put this out there - this week is VidCon, so my next wrap up will not
have the same amount of content as this video, because if I can remember to read one book,
I will not know where I found the time.
First this week, I finished Arabella of Mars by David D. Levine.
I read this mostly in one go over a 12 hour span on the first day of the read-a-thon,
and adored it.
Arabella was born on Mars to English parents, and after Arabella is caught being very unlady-like,
her mother decides to take her and her sisters back to England so they can be proper ladies
of society.
After they've been in London for a while, they receive a message saying that one of the
male family members has died.
Arabella is grief stricken, and while she's visiting a cousin, she talks about the intricacies
of traveling to Mars, and how now is the best time because of the alignment, and
since he's salty about not inheriting any of the family wealth, he decides to go
off and kill the last male male family member, because, obviously, even though they have space travel,
this is the 1800's in London, England, and woman inherit nothing.
Arabella, of course, will stop at nothing to make sure that her family survives, and this
book is just wonderful.
There were constant twists and intrigue with this imagined form of space travel.
I am already on the holds list for the next book, Arabella and the Battle of Venus, which
comes out next month.
Next, I dove into Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett.
I said in my TBR video that'd I've never read a Pratchett book, and that's technically untrue.
I have read Good Omens, which was co-written between him and Neil Gaiman, but this is the
first time I've read a Pratchett only book.
And it had me giggling into my tea quite a few times.
This book is about the eighth child of the eighth son, who should be a wizard if it
weren't for the fact that woman can't be wizards.
However, just after she was born and right before an old wizard died, he gave her his
staff, thinking she was a he.
It becomes a conspiracy between her father and the witch in town to make sure she never
realizes she has magic.
When that predictably fails, the witch tries to teach her her type of magic, but
soon it's realized that's not going to work either, so they need to taker her to the wizard
school - if they can find it.
Pratchett has a way of writing that I immensely enjoy, so I can see myself picking up more
of the Discworld series.
Who wouldn't be tickled pink by a village called Bad Ass, that is so tiny that it barely shows
up on a map of the village.
The third physical book of the week was All That Sang by Lydia Perović.
This is a wee novella that has to do with the heartbreak of one woman who moved from Canada to
France to be with her lover, and is rejected.
It's told through several perspectives, and it switches around without much warning, but
each chapter gives you a new look into this lesbian relationship.
The writing is smooth and delicate, although its hard to get stuck into
the first few pages, because you just have to keep reading until you start to understand what's going on.
The only problem I had with this book is that at one point the protagonist describes
a meal she's making for her lover, purposefully to try to
emulate the texture and colour, in as many dishes as possible,
of female ejaculate, which is, ew,
I think I'll eat solid food only for the next little while.
Book four this week was The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce.
This is the companion novel to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which is a book that follows
a man named Harold Fry who gets a letter in the mail from a friend he hadn't talked to for twenty
years saying that she's dying, and he sets off on a walk from the south of England to Northumberland
to see her before she dies.
In this novel, you get the perspective of Queenie, the dying friend, as she waits for
Harold to arrive.
With some prompting from one of the nuns in the hospice, she starts writing Harold a letter
about all the things she never told him, as other patients in the hospice fade away, and
Queenie has hallucinations because of her meds.
This book really confronted the difference between dying and living as though you've
already died, and was full of heart-breaking moments.
These books complement each other so well, and I highly recommend them.
This week, in honour of the Library-a-thon, and because it was finally my turn to
take them out of the library, I watched the first 5 episodes of The Librarians.
This show is based off a set of three movies about The Librarian, and is set seven years
after the last movie ended.
I haven't seen the movies, but plan to go back after I watch the whole show to see where
it all began.
In this show, The Librarian collects and guards magical objects, while other magical beings
try to take them and destroy the world for their own gain.
The CGI is hilariously campy at times, it really likes to plays with tropes, and has some great
sci-fi [guest] stars, such as Tricia Helfer as an evil executive and Bruce Campbell as
an adorable Santa.
This week I listened to a lot of old episodes of Dear Hank and John, and comedy podcast
about death that I have been neglecting because the audiobooks I have been listening to
have been generally really, really long, and don't leave any time for podcasts.
I really enjoy the format of this podcast, as well as the banter between the brother's
Green, and, of course, I am excited to see them again this week at VidCon.
Just a reminder, I'm hosting the BookTube Networking session on Saturday, so if you

This week I listened to Fairest by Marissa Meyer.
I found out during the intro of this book that people who like the Lunar Chronicles are
referred to as Lunar-tics, which I have mixed feelings about.
This story follows Levana from before we met Cinder, and gives you kind of the back story
as to why she is so freaking evil.
She frustrates me as a person because she is a giant freaking hypocrite; she thinks her sister,
the queen, is entitled and self serving, and yet she acts very entitled and self-serving.
She just convinces herself that everything she wants is the best for Luna.
She doesn't listen to the wants or needs of others, and I'm glad I've never crossed
her path, because I would die pretty quickly.
This week I also listened to The Reptile Room and The Wide Window by Lemony Snicket.
The second book is still narrated by Tim Curry, but it's not done as
a radio drama thing. And then,
as of the third book, it's narrated by Lemony Snicket.
No offense to the author, but I enjoyed Tim's reading much better.
That's not to say I won't continue the series.
In fact, the whole reason I had so much time for Dear Hank and John this week is I'm
waiting for The Miserable Mill to be available from Cloud Library.
After that, I have no idea what happens, because that's the end of the first season
of the show on Netflix, but I have books 5 and 6 on standby.
I can only hope that one day, someone will learn to listen to the Baudelaires,
but given that this is a series of unfortunate events, I can only assume that they don't.

Deltonator Build #5 - Small Steps #1 - Duration: 5:03.
Welcome back to my 3D printer build log.
I'd like to apologize for the increasing delays.
In the last months, both my professional workload and the time allocated for family and friends
haven't left me with much time to pursue this project.
I don't know whether this will get better any time soon, but at least I can share what
has happened in the meantime.
The first aspect I worked on was the LCD touch-screen housing.
When ordering the Duet Wifi, I originally planned on buying a 5" panel.
Since that was out of stock at the time, I went with a 7" panel.
What I didn't consider at the time was that my current printer is too small to print an
enclosure suitable for this panel.
So, there's only one option left...
No, of course not - even though my approach might get me excommunicated from some rep-rap
communities.
I bought a pre-fabricated case with an aluminium front plate, took that out and glued a template
onto it.
After drilling the necessary holes, I used a scroll saw to rough out the cutout for the
panel, filed the edges to size and then mounted the panel to the front plate.
To connect the panel to the printer, I'm using a 4-pole GX16 aviation connector.
It needs a hole a bit larger than my largest twist drill, so here I'm using a kind of slot
drill to enlarge the hole until the connector fits inside.
Since the holes in the PanelDue PCB don't line up with the mounting holes in the case,
I've designed and printed a small mounting adapter that is screwed to the case and in
turn holds the PCB.
The GX16 socket is connected to the PanelDue, and I'm using a ribbon cable to connect the
LCD panel to the PanelDue PCB.
I had to "modify" the connector on the PanelDue side of the cable rather extensively because
several of the components mounted around the connector got in the way.
Just another warranty voided...
And here is the finished display unit.
It's a bit on the light side and tends to slide around, so I might want to add some
components to improve the gravitational footprint later on, but at the moment, I don't have
any suitable scrap material lying around here.
Back to the printer.
You might recall that I mounted the print bed with the heater mat underneath it in the
last video.
The downside of this arrangement is that half of the surface area of the heater mat would
be heating the air underneath the bed, which is undesirable and a waste of energy.
To improve the situation, I've ordered some insulating mineral wool that I'll mount underneath
the bed.
Since the wool is rather floppy and wouldn't stay in place unless properly supported, I'll
be using three aluminium bands to hold it in place.
To make it easier to mount the bands, I decided to flatten the top sides of the mounting brackets.
Off-camera, I cut the aluminium bands to size, rounded off the edges and drilled holes large
enough to slide them over the hex posts holding the bed.
These bands are not screwed to the frame, but will be held in place just by gravity
and the slightly compressed wool.
The wool can easily be cut with a sharp knife.
Avoid contact with your bare skin - wear gloves, if possible a respirator or face mask and
try to avoid getting the dust and fibers onto your skin.
I realize that a long-sleeve shirt would have been a good idea, too.
The holes for the screws and the cable can easily be poked through with a screwdriver.
To mark the positions of the holes and hold the aluminium bands in place, I've already
screwed the posts to the bed.
Here I'm screwing the brackets to the posts.
This time, I'm mounting the bed with the printer turned upside-down.
So here it is - the printer with the insulated heated bed.
And that's it for today.

Why Alexandria Happened - Duration: 3:09.
That shooting in Alexandria Virginia was the work of a mentally ill person who should never
had access to guns.
The Alexandria shooter was in a spot very much like I'm in right now.
Near a dugout on a baseball field in Alexandria Virginia and what was so chilling about that
thing was that it could be on any baseball field, including the one I'm on right now.
So there was a lot of hand wringing this week about why it happened.
And one of the local politicians where I live was on Facebook talking about it, and he was
kind of going on about how mean spirited political climate precipitated this shooting and respectfully
I think he's all wrong.
He's got it wrong.
The reason that Alexandria shooting happened is because of a lethal cocktail where there's
not enough mental health infrastructure coupled with guns everywhere.
Just plain and simple.
I don't think its the mean spirited political climate that's contributing to these murders.
Politics is mean spirited.
One side wants something, the other side has something.
It's like war without weapons.
Only now there are weapons.
There's weapons everywhere.
We have a gun obsessed culture.
We fetishize guns and unfortunately, there's no national commitment to mental health so
mentally ill people have easy access to inexpensive guns.
That's why this keeps happening, that's why Alexandria happened and that's why this will
continue to happen again and again and again.
Newtown, Alexandria even the Pulse Nightclub.
You can say, "Well these people were linked to terrorists."
I think those guys are mentally ill too, and they have no access there's no reporting system.
We barely have a commitment to a national health system.
We certainly don't have a commitment to a national mental health system.
And that's what needs to happen.
That's why I don't see this slowing down anytime soon.
I think blaming it on the mean spiritedness of politics is actually unhealthy and prolonging
the problem.
When Patrick Henry said, "Give me liberty or give me death."
to the Virginia legislature trying to convince them to join the Revolutionary War in the
1770's did someone tell him to tone down the rhetoric?
I doubt it.

Hello, everyone.
So I've been a bit absent on the channel for the last few months.
And I just wanted to thank everyone who left comments asking where I was and if I was okay.
It was very nice of you. I'm so proud of the community that we've built.
I know that we don't usually do this kind of personal stuff on the channel,
but I thought you guys deserved to know what's been going on with me.
Basically, since we finished Hannuvlog/Vlogmas, I experienced a really intense creative dry spell.
Particularly when it came to editing.
And I've talked about it before–that editing is actually my favorite part of the video creating process.
It's something that brings me a lot of joy and has always come kinda naturally to me.
But since December, it's been very, very difficult for me to do.
It's like in "Kiki's Delivery Service," when she's sad and she can't fly anymore.
That's what happened with me.
I edited and released a few videos here and there,
and sometimes the passion would return…
just a little bit though.
And it was always dulled.
And I had to really force myself to do something that normally makes me very happy,
and that comes to me very naturally.
And that was…very distressing.
And not fun.
And while dealing with that there was emotional stuff going on.
The biggest of which was that my relationship ended.
That was a few months ago and I am fine,
but there's definitely been stuff to deal with on that front,
and that played a role in my absence from the channel.
But this month, things are settling.
And I felt my creativity and passion for making videos return.
And it's great! [Desperate laugh]
I really love YouTube.
I love being a YouTuber, and the fact that I haven't been able to do it for these last several months
has been *really* frustrating! [Chuckles]
Because I've wanted to.
But I just *couldn't.*
And I'm so happy to be back!
Also, as you guys know from Paige's last video,
we are going to VidCon this week!
Yay!
It's been a dream of mine to go, and I'm also very excited to go and learn,
and also to meet some of the great people that we've met online the last few years.
I actually won the Creator Chat lottery.
So I get to talk at a roundtable with one of my favorite YouTubers, Andre Meadows,
[Weird voice] and I'm so excited! [Chuckles] I'm so excited.
And I'm also excited because this feels like a new chapter.
It feels like a good time for this to happen,
for me personally and for me creatively.
