11 Travel Hacks You Need To Know for Stress-free Traveling - Duration: 10:30.

Well it has been a minute and a half.

I have just come back from holidays where I single-handedly paved the road to hell

with my great intentions to continue uploading videos.

In my defence, the wifi was terrible.

And the airline lost my work ethic.

But I am back, and I am sharing my top travel hacks with you so you can make the whole experience a little less horrific.

Because I'm pretty sure that at the end of that road that I was talking about paving…

would be an airport.

Horrible places.

Here's how to make things a little less stressful.

Let's go.

Hi guys, it's Laura from How To Get Your Sh*t Together

and I help you get organised, get motivated, and take the stress out of traveling.

So anyone who knows me knows that I am not a great flyer.

My stomach was not built for sudden changes in altitude.

I'm also afraid of water, so boats terrify me.

And flying over water?

Yeah, that's just one big nightmare...

wrapped up in a horror story.

With that in mind, I wanted to share some things that will take a little bit of the trauma out of traveling

whether you are going by land, sea or air.

Here they are:

Hack number 1

Bring vaseline and saline solution

Bear with me on this one.

In any situation where you've got a group of people in close proximity who are all breathing the same recycled air,

the chances of you picking up a bug or two are high.

If you easily fall foul of the dreaded "plane flu"

then rub a little bit of vaseline or lip balm

or some petroleum jelly product just under and around your nostrils before you board.

That will help to trap dust and pollen and other airborne particles before they can enter into your nose and start irritating your sinuses.

It's one of the number one tips that I picked up in all my years of pharmacy management.

If you are a hay fever sufferer especially, whether you're traveling or not, try it.

Then, when you arrive safe and sound, use a saline solution to rinse out your nose,

and that should help to flush out any germs that were trying to sneak their way in there and hold your immune system to ransom.

Vitamin C and zinc are also great supplements for fighting cold symptoms

so it's worth considering taking the recommended doses of those if you do find that you often get sick after traveling.

Just remember that Vitamin C can take a few weeks to build up in your system so, if you are going to take it, start about 6 weeks before your trip.

Hack number 2

Wear layers

You can't always easily adjust the heat settings in whatever mode of transport you've chosen

but you can adjust how many layers of insulation you're wearing.

Think tank top under a t-shirt under a cardigan…

topped with a large light scarf.

Bonus tip: always carry a pair of socks.

When you are going somewhere sunny in particular, the tendency is to wear sandals or flip-flops.

But then you get out to sea or up in the air

and the feet freeze off ya!

It's also handy if you're going through an airport that still insists that you remove your shoes.

So, if you don't want to go barefoot, slip on some socks and you're good to go.

Hack number 3

Wear comfortable clothes

Now is not the time to be breaking in your new jeans

or that lovely wool sweater that looks so cosy but, 5 minutes later,

is scouring away the top layer of your skin.

Go for tried and trusted, folks.

Hack number 4

Make a list

and bring it with you.

Throwing things into a bag last minute is a surefire way to forget something.

Give the matter a bit of careful consideration

and then bring the list with you so that, when you're packing to come home, you won't leave something behind.

Fare thee well, phone charger.

Hack number 5

Always pack a change of clothes in your carry-on.

Thankfully, an airline has never lost my bag but it does happen.

It happened to my husband last time he was traveling for work.

If yours go walkies, you want to at least have a fresh pair of clothes that you can change into until your luggage is located and returned to you

or, worst case scenario, until you have a chance to go out and buy some new clothes.

If you're traveling with someone and you each have a suitcase,

and the other person is totally OK with it,

then consider mixing your stuff so that each suitcase contains half of each of your belongings.

That way, if one of the bags goes missing, you still each have half your stuff.

Speaking of missing luggage…

Hack number 6

Make your suitcase stand out...

for the right reasons.

Your suitcase should be easily identifiable for 2 reasons:

1: it's much easier to spot and grab as soon as you see it coming around the carousel so that you don't have to wait until it goes all the way around again

and 2: opportunists or just tired, inattentive travellers are much less likely to pick up a unique looking bag than they are a plain old black one.

Either buy eye-catching luggage or, if you already have a suitcase that's a bit basic looking,

then tie a bright ribbon around the handle using a secure knot, spray paint a stencil onto it, whatever.

Then make it as difficult as possible for thieves to take stuff out.

Get yourself a TSA-approved lock, wrap some bungee cords around it…

Whatever puts as many obstacles as possible between a potential thief and your belongings.

A lot of airports now will completely encase your luggage in plastic wrap for a small fee.

It'll only take you a few seconds to cut it off at the other side

but a thief isn't going to go to all that trouble.

Thieves generally have to act quite quickly so if your luggage poses any problems for them,

they're just going to move on to the next one.

Hack number 7

Make your trip through security as straightforward as possible

You know you're going to have to remove toiletries and that they're going to have to be in a clear plastic bag

so don't bury them at the bottom of your backpack.

Get yourself a see-through pouch, pop them all in there, and then put them in a separate compartment or somewhere you can easily reach them.

No more rummaging when you've got a queue of people breathing down your neck.

You also know you're going to have to remove electronics

so, likewise, keep those in a convenient, easy-to-access place.

If you're going to be wearing jewellery, then bring a little pouch or a small baggie

so that, if you have to remove them, you can stash them in there, safe and sound, and pop them in your bag.

I once had to remove a ring that had been a gift and, because it was so small, I didn't spot it when I was grabbing my stuff on the other side and I forgot about it.

And a few minutes later when I remembered it and went back, it was long gone.

Lesson learned.

Hack number 8

Let relevant people and companies know where you're going.

A close family member or friend should know exactly where you're staying, including the address and contact details,

but also let your bank, credit card company, and post office know that you're going to be out of town.

I once had to have emergency dental surgery while I was abroad

and then I couldn't pay for my hotel room because my bank, assuming fraud because of the massive payment in a foreign country, had frozen my credit card.

It got sorted but it was very stressful.

And it cost me a small fortune in international phone calls.

Your local postal service will be able to put aside any important packages so that they're not sitting on your doorstep for a week

or, worse, sent back because you weren't available to sign for them.

BUT don't let all and sundry know that you're going to be away.

If something happens and your insurance company gets wind that you posted on Facebook that you were going to be out foreign,

chances are they will see that as an open invitation to thieves and will void your policy.

Hack number 9 is to stash some extra cash

Keep a small sum of cash and a spare credit card somewhere separate from your wallet.

Public transport and tourist hotspots are rife with pickpockets

and, even apart from that, when you're trying to keep track of so many bags

it's so easy to lose sight of one or to put something down and then just completely forget to pick it back up again.

I have left half of my grocery shopping behind me in the store because my daughter was distracting me.

I mean, I can live a few days without bananas and cereal

but if you are stuck in a strange place with no way to pay for things, that's not ideal.

And while you're at it…

Hack number 10 is to make copies of all of your important documentation

and stash them somewhere safe too.

Passports, for example, go missing all the time.

If it happens to you, it's not going to be a pleasant experience

but, if you have copies of your important documentation,

it will make the process of sorting everything out a whole lot less stressful.

Even snapping pictures of them on your phone is better than nothing.

Speaking of snapping pictures...

the final hack is to take pictures of helpful information

The first thing I do when I get to the airport car park is to take a picture of exactly where the car is,

including the row number or the nearest sign,

and also a picture of the shuttle bus stop number.

It's also helpful to take a picture of your hotel room door if you're the type of person who forgets their room number,

and also to take a picture of the front of the hotel and the street sign where it's located

in case you get lost and you're looking for directions but the hotel name is really hard to pronounce.

It's also no harm to take pictures of maps.

Now, large area maps can be downloaded to your phone before you go

and I would highly recommend that,

but think about just local maps.

It could just be the map of the resort where you're staying.

Also, directions, or the opening hours for local tourist attractions or cafés,

a business card for a local taxi firm, etc.

Any helpful information that you think could come in handy.

And there you have it. Those are my top 11 tips to take some of the stress out of traveling.

Stories from the Field – What You Don't Know - Duration: 4:24.

You don't know what you don't know, okay?

Probably the best example I have of that is when I was at Monsanto and they were introducing

genetically modified crops. This was at the very beginning before, I mean nowadays people have

heard about genetically modified crops and there's all kinds of points of view to whether they're good

or bad, but let's kind of just think about it from an innovation perspective.

The people who had developed that were the people in the agricultural division,

and so they thought of their customers as farmers and they were very good scientists and the science

that went in to being able to develop genetically modified crops was nothing short of amazing.

And they understood a lot of the perspectives that they needed to understand to commercialize,

so there were significant regulatory issues that they had to deal with because this was something totally new.

They understood that there were real problems with how do they capture value from these seeds,

so the very first product that they had was a soybean product.

Typically, a farmer, he plants soybeans and then he saves some percentage of his crop and uses those

soybeans that he saved the next year, so, he replants. So, if you have the technology that you've spent

tens of millions of dollars developing, you don't want to just go out and sell soybeans for one year

and then it's in the public domain. So, there was a lot of creativity that they had around how to

capture value. From a legal perspective, they created literally contracts with farmers, which was unheard of.

No one had ever done this before, but they said if you want to buy our bag of seed here, you have to

commit to not saving seed for the next year. They also had the farmer commit to setting aside at least

20 percent of his acreage in a certain configuration so that there would be environmental protections,

so they were very, very good at thinking about all the angles for the world as they knew it.

But these were people who had always only needed to think of their customers as the farmers,

and now they were selling something that actually the downstream customers were going to care about.

In other words, the people who were going to eat the food.

And it literally never occurred to them to ask the question, what will ordinary people think about

eating food that came from genetically modified seeds, and we all know now with 20-20 hindsight the

firestorm that ensued when genetically modified seeds came on the market.

These were people who were true believers in the value of their science.

They thought, "We are going to feed the world with this," and it never occurred to them that anyone would object to that.

And what is so interesting is the agriculture people were based in St. Louis, the pharmaceutical

division was sitting there in Chicago, this was a company that was the first company who had ever

commercialized the birth control pill. They had lots of experience, lots of understanding of what it is

to manage the social impact and the downstream consumer attitudes towards a product.

But they never talked to one another. Until it was really pretty late, until the firestorm had ensued and

then the pharmaceutical people said, "You know, we might be able to help you on this," but it was

kind of late. So it's a cautionary tale that if you have diversity of perspectives, you have people who

are more likely to answer those, ask those question that you haven't even thought to ask.

Why I Can't Make Videos - Reason 3 - I don't have a camera - Duration: 4:35.

Why I can't make videos, reason number three. I don't have a camera! I don't have

a camera. Well let me start this off really kind of out there. You can always

make videos with screen capture or PowerPoint. If you have something to say,

you can make those easily. That's all done on your computer and you don't even

need a camera for those. In fact there's a lot of free programs you can use to do

screen capture on your computer. So there's one option. Now maybe you have a

10 plus year old camera, but it still takes video. May not be the highest

quality, but this little bugger does pretty good. Or you might have a video

camera. This one doesn't have an external mic, so yeah we have to be a little

careful where we position, so that we can get good audio, but it still works.

We even have another way to make videos kaboom! This is a time-lapse camera it has

no audio, but it does time-lapse. So maybe you could think of a way for your

business to use time lapse. I love this thing! Now if you really want to get down

kinda nitty-gritty, if you're watching this video then

there's a very good chance you have a way to get online. So you might have a

phone. Your phone has a camera. I'll guarantee it almost all of them do. A lot

of people use their phones to make videos. Or maybe you have a tablet. This

tablet has a camera and it can make videos could be an option, huh? Now my

regular camera, it goes everywhere with me,

guess what it makes videos, it makes really good videos in fact. So maybe you

have one of these or maybe one of your friends does.

Now I use an external cam. I'm not going to grab a laptop and show

you that, most laptops have cams on them, but I have an external cam, because I use

everything on PC mostly. And this is my external cam this is a Logitech c920.

This is pretty much all I use for most of these videos and it's what I've used

for other channels. I've never had an issue with it. They're great cameras. You

can get them on Amazon probably between 50 and 70 dollars depending on what you

find. But if your excuse is, I don't have a camera and you're not either happy

with your phone, your tablet, your regular cameras, whatever and you want an

external camera that gives you a little bit of control and has a built-in mic. It

has, you can set it for auto focus, auto lighting, all those things and you have a

few dollars you can spend. I suggest you go get a Logitech c920. I love this

camera, in fact we got a couple of them in case one of them breaks or dies or

anything else. So to say you don't have a camera might mean that you don't have

one of those big-ass cameras you see some of the big guys using. Those are

really fancy cameras. Maybe you don't have a nice DSLR camera, so what. Lots of

people on YouTube are getting their messages out, they're getting hundreds,

thousands, millions of views and they could be using something just this

simple. I'll guarantee they don't all have a $35,000 camera, although some of

those are really nice, don't need it. So no more excuses of I don't have a camera,

because I'll guarantee you've got one. So I look forward to seeing your videos now

that we've solved your whole camera issue. Bet you're going to leave me

care of that issue.

- Hi, today we're going to be teaching your dog

a really fun trick, and that is the difference

between left and right.

This is my seven month old puppy Beeline.

My name is Kale.

Welcome back to McCann Dogs.

(dog yelping)

It's really important when we're training together

that we work hard to enrich our dog's life,

and one of the ways that we can do that

is by trick training.

Trick training is really fun

because there's no consequence,

and it's trained with purely positive methods.

It's a great way to build a bond

and relationship with your dog.

So we're going to start off by step number one,

teaching your dog to spin left or right.

Now, I have a smaller dog,

so I can do this from my knees.

If you have a larger dog,

you may consider standing up to try this.

So I have a few pieces of food in my hand,

and all I'm going to do is start off

by making sure she's in a standing position,

and I'm gonna keep my hand level with her nose,

so that as I turn my hand,

she's likely to follow it around in a circle

rather than sitting,

so I'm just going to start off

by moving my hand really slowly.

Try again.

Yes, good girl.

And I don't need to say any commands at this point

because I'm assuming she doesn't know what she's doing.

When you begin, your puppy probably won't know

what it means quite yet,

so there's no point in saying a command.

Yes, good girl.

So as she finishes the turn,

I'm going to say yes, good girl,

and I'm going to reward her.

You're just going to repeat this process

until your dog starts to turn more easily

each time you practice.

Good girl.

Yes.

Now once your dog can turn very easily with the food,

you can start to put it on a command.

Now you can be as creative as you want with the command,

but one of the things that I think is really cute

is teaching them a left and right.

I also do a lot of agility training,

and I find the left and right command very handy

for when I'm on course with my dogs as well.

So what I would do is make sure I know the difference

between my lefts and rights,

which is a challenge for me sometimes,

and I'm gonna get the food on the nose,

tell her left.

Yes, and then turn her in that direction.

Good girl.

Left.

Yes, good girl.

Remember our good timing.

I need to say the command followed one second later

by the lure with the food.

Ready, left.

Yes, good girl.

Left.

I think somebody wants to go right.

Good girl.

Now I'm going to try right.

Right.

So she was wrong there.

She guessed and went the opposite direction.

No big deal.

I actually love that she's trying to do something

in order to get the reward.

She's being creative,

so I want to encourage those behaviors.

I'm not going to get upset with her about it.

I got one more treat.

Very nice little Bee.

Now as you're practicing, there are a few common mistakes

that sometimes comes up.

One of them is that often handlers

try to move their hand too quickly,

spin them around with the food too fast,

and sometimes the dogs lose focus really easily,

and then they aren't able to spin all the way around.

So make sure when you're practicing that you first start

move your hand incredibly slow.

Slow enough that your dog can easily follow the food

around in a circle continuously.

And as they start to get better,

you certainly can make your hand move faster and faster.

The second thing that I often see

is people often hold their hand a little bit too high.

So they go to spin their dog,

and because the hand's too high,

the dogs end up being stuck in a sit.

Now it's hard to spin your dog.

I know, it's difficult, when they're in a sitting position,

so if I just lower my hand so it's at head level,

good girl, and then I try to turn her.

Yes, yes, good girl.

I'm much less likely to get a sit.

Hopefully you'll find that helpful.

Now I've just practice a whole bunch

with food hidden in my signal hand.

So what I'm going to do now

is I'm going to try a couple

without any food in my signal hand.

Now I have food ready here

to jackpot reward her, bonus reward her,

if she's able to turn on my command and hand signal.

Hey Ms. Bee, come here.

Ready?

Left, yes, left, yes.

Good girl.

Ready, right, yes, right, yes, right.

Yes, good girl!

Very nice.

One more, left, yes.

Excellent girl.

And then I can reward her once she's responded

to my command.

Now this process of training may take you a few minutes,

it may take you a few weeks,

it may take you a few months.

It really just depends on your dog's willingness to learn

or how much shaping and training

you've done with your dog previous to this point.

So if things are going along well,

and you see that your dog's even starting

to beat you to the punch a little bit.

As you start to say left or right,

your dog kinda already start to go in that direction,

your dog's probably telling you they are ready

to learn this on a verbal command.

So what I'm going to do this time

is I have my food ready,

I'm gonna tell her left or right,

but I'm not going to also encourage her.

Good girl.

With my hand.

I'm just gonna keep my hands quiet,

and if she's able to do it just on my word alone,

I'm gonna really generously reward her.

Discovery Beach House, We Love Everything They Do for Us - Adrienne and Ardis - Duration: 1:47.

Hi, I'm Adrienne Knoll and I'm Artis Sander.

We are sisters and Adrienne is from Tuscon and I'm from Noco in Arizona, and this is

our second time at the Discovery Beach House.

And, it's been wonderful.

We've stayed an entire month this time.

Last year was only two weeks, and it was not nearly enough, and after a month, we don't

think that's enough either.

We mainly, we do a lot of cooking.

We've eaten all of our meals out here on the patio.

Spent a lot of time in the pool.

Watch the monkeys every day.

And, the lizards.

And the lizards, we love the Jesus Christ lizards.

Seeing them walk across the water and of course listen to the birds.

It's just been wonderful.

This house has met all of our needs.

We have been totally in comfort here.

Not only mentally but physically.

It is a great place to be.

And, the maids come and everything is clean, and very tidy.

And the men all take good care of us, keeping everything in good repair, not that it needs

it.

You know, we love everything that they do for us, and they do it with such grace, such

ease, and so quietly.

Maybe sometimes it's difficult for them because we're around so much.

It's not that we go off and do tours and things during the day.

We're here, so we're, so maybe sometimes we're underfoot but they're very patient

with us.

[IAIN GILLESPIE] Canada's got a unique geography, and that unique geography we've talked about a lot today.

You are the northern neighbour to the biggest economy in the world, and that's an opportunity and it's

a challenge for you. And Canadians continually face an issue around distinctiveness.

So how can Canada grow a distinctive industry, a distinctive innovation-driven industry, and address

your productivity gap? Can Canada do that by focusing on Canada? Well absolutely no.

Although you're physically a large country you're actually a medium-sized country.

The country I come from believes that it can exist without Europe. Can I get a visa to come and work here?

Believe me, the Donald is not as big a risk. So you have to think globally.

The first challenge is to what extent can Canada create a global receiving environment for the kinds of

technologies, the kinds of businesses that you're growing that will allow them to go beyond just

Canadian marketplace? And an observation from 10 years in the UACD is that Canadians follow the

reputation. They're nice, they're interactive, they're very positive, but they're not very much on the

front foot in trying to set what does a regulatory environment look like. And when I say a regulatory,

I mean standards, I mean best practices, I mean norms. I don't just mean hard regulations.

Canadians have done brilliantly well in informing them, but purely in taking these informed regulatory

approaches and nailing them into the design of Canadian policy and the interest of Canadian industry.

So I think my first message would be a bit more assertive.

[PATRICK COHENDET] In fact, Canada is full of assertive innovation.

We, I don't know, Joseph-Armand Bombardier is a huge disruption is snowmobiles and so on.

Guy Laliberte started from a street in Saint-Michel with guys and reinvent a new circus.

So we are good — when I say we, I am Canadian now — we are good in disruptions.

Let me take the case maybe of Cirque du Soleil or of Guy Laliberte or something.

What "permits" the disruption to build the biggest entertainment company in the world?

In fact, not only substitution from banks and from government, but also the building of a unique

middle ground, which is in fact, if you don't know Montreal, is north of Montreal, is a Quartier St Michel

which was – it's interesting, it's an old quarry. It's the worst place of Canada, with the lowest income

in Canada, at the moment a dangerous place to be. And they decided here to build what they call

la THOU which is a centre of experimentation in this environment, open to social inclusion, people

from the local environment could work there and be referred to the Cirque du Soleil and then there is

school of circus which is there. And so by regulation, by the help of the government, by the help of

the Cirque du Soleil, they succeeded in this place to build an extraordinary middle ground connected

to the local population, connected to the world. You have a lot of festivals that bring people to the world.

And I think this is an example of what Canada can do, is this building of values of social inclusion,

of profit makings (Cirque du Soleil is profit-making), of respectable environment

and I think it's a very good example of successes that we can do.

[LEAH LAWRENCE] We're good at ideation, we're good at disruption.

In fact, we just did a study related to this where we looked at research converted to patenting on both

academic patenting and industrial patenting. And what we found is that Canada in fact per capita

leads the United States and other nations on research publications. So that means we have great ideas,

My we have a lot of ideation, we have got a lot of stuff going on. We lag in turning those ideas into

patents on academic patents, from academic research into patents. We don't lag quite as much on

industrial patents. And so what that means, you know, this sounds very technical but let's get back to

your question. So what that means is we're really good at coming up with great ideas.

The Guy Lalibertes of the world or some of the other, the Fogo Island with Zita Cobb are I think

examples of what we could do if we took things a little farther than we currently have.

Here's the deal. So in Canada when we go and we think about what we will do on the world stage,

we think about solving the problems and I think this is a very endearing thing about us, we're very

nice, right, isn't that what you said? And so we think okay, well, regulation…

[IAIN GILLESPIE] Oh, you are. [LEAH LAWRENCE] Yes, there you go. [IAIN GILLESPIE] You had to think about it a while…stay nice!

[LEAH LAWRENCE] Well, regulation, what that is, is that's how we do social good,

that's how we correct the externalities of the world, that's how we do things better.

We should make information all free because then the world would do it for good.

I'm very proud of us for this but it's a little bit naïve, ladies and gentlemen, because in fact what some

of the rest of the world are doing, they realize a few simple facts, and Iain can grow on this because

I'm just new to this. First of all, we had the question about a patent earlier and whether it mattered.

Yeah, patent sure does matter, and you know why? Because it's the creation of a little monopoly

where you now have space to be able to take your invention and your innovation and translate it into money, okay.

Now, let's just say you want to do that because that's a good thing. You probably spent, as I just said,

10 to 15 years trying to get that invention to some place where you could sell it, and now you want to

be able to — you probably didn't pay yourself for much of that time — and now you actually want to

do something with it and get deployed. So now I have a patent. Well, if you're not in Canada,

say you're in the United States, your government is out negotiating on your behalf to change global

regs [regulations] and standards so that — best-available technology standards they would sometimes

call them — so that your technology is the thing that some people might choose, but Canada doesn't

do that. Canada says well, you know, this is for the greater good and so whoever's technology gets

adopted, it will be because it was the best technology, or it would be because it's yielding a greater

good. Because we don't realize somehow that in fact what technology gets adopted isn't necessarily

the one that is going to deliver the greater good. And so what you have is a situation where we go into

a negotiation thinking we're going to deliver the greater good and others who have talked to their

entrepreneurs and their CEOs and know what kind of Canadian technologies could deliver greater

good — or, sorry, their national greater good — they speak to that and they talk about well,

let's try to go this way or that way. That's how you create space for your entrepreneurs to grow and prosper.

And that's what Iain said earlier.

So we need to be able to create and not be shy about having a public dialogue between our innovators,

our inventors, our CEOs and our public policy makers so that they understand that we have global

class entrepreneurs that can do something and that become the Guy Lalibertes of the world, and that's

a great example. So, for example, I have a couple of companies that have, I mean our portfolio that

we have we're very proud of, they have world-class water technologies, membrane catalysts,

that kinds of technologies. And sometimes even fuel-cells technologies from those two spaces.

We have world-class researchers, world-class entrepreneurs in this area, and when we're sitting in a

room they'll say, you know what I can compete with the best, and they can, except for if they go into

a market which says well, we're going to go down this specific technology route to deliver this

outcome and specify actually the technology pathway, even though the outcomes could be the same

for Canadian technology versus another country's technology. If the technology pathway has been

specified down that road, that's the way it's going to go. And by the time you get to saying well,

my outcomes are the same, that regulatory standard is already in place and you have really a big

problem trying to back it up to be able to get market entry on an equal basis for your technology.

So one thing, you know, if you're studying law and you're studying intellectual property,

and I think you need to think about the fact that the world isn't this idealistic place that we necessarily

like it to be, it's actually an opportunistic kind of place, still to deliver good outcomes but to go down

different pathways than we might expect.
