Before the Olympics, I have won several tournaments
such as the All-England and World Cup.

And Indonesia hasn't gotten any gold medal before.
After I got the first Olympic gold medal for Indonesia,
everything changed. I could really feel it.

It's not just about the achievement,
but people became more aware of Indonesia.
This picture was taken when I got the first Olympic medal.
I was so emotional, I was crying in that photo.
It was taken when our national flag was raised
and our national anthem sung.
And for me, this is my highest achievement.
It was the first gold medal, not just for Indonesia,
but also for badminton in the Olympics itself.

It was the biggest moment for me.
Like a dream, actually.
We had a huge celebration and they set up a parade

So that's the atmosphere, it was so amazing, you know.
So I was shocked at this.
My victory in the Olympics brought about
a very positive influence on Indonesians,
especially on children,
who were all very enthusiastic about playing badminton.
And I was very happy about that
because my victory enhanced the popularity of badminton
perhaps not only in Indonesia but also other countries.
For me, that was a source of great pride
because I grew up with badminton.
So when I was able to attain a great achievement in badminton,
I did not only bring about a positive influence on badminton
in Indonesia, but all around the world.

Badminton is my hobby and then my passion.
That's why even after I retired from badminton,
I still keep practising, though not every day
to keep my stamina and to make sure my body is still OK.
I want to share my experience and my knowledge too.
I'm not directly coaching the players, but indirectly,
I make the "weapon".
The "weapon" is so important to the players.
We create these ourselves for the players,
for doubles players, for singles players,
for powerful players, for not-so-powerful players.
We try to figure out this.
We also make a tournament.
The purpose of this tournament
is to give back to my association
because they trained me and helped me to become
one of the best players in the world.
That's why I want to give opportunities
to the young players.
Today's athlete faces more distractions.
The competition is tighter,
since badminton has become an Olympic sport.
Every country is competing
to make their athletes more famous.
Now Badminton is not dominated by China and Indonesia any more
but you can see other countries
like Spain now suddenly coming up with good players.
Even now Russia, of course Japan and Korea.
The one who is more prepared,
more focused and more disciplined,
will be the Olympic champion.
The distractions are not limited to the mobile phone
and movies.
Discipline and hard work are
what they need the most right now.
Badminton is my profession,
and most of my life is tied to badminton.
Because without badminton, I am nobody. Through badminton,
I've become the Susi Susanti people know today.
Badminton is Indonesia's most famous sport after soccer.
This gives us pride, and becomes our people's sport.

To be honest, I only followed the badminton news

from newspapers, because it was limited at that time.
I read how my seniors like Tan Joe Hok, Ferry Sonneville,
Lie Po Djian, Eddy Yusuf and many others

such as the All-England and Thomas Cup.
I was inspired by them, by how Indonesian badminton players
could compete internationally.
That was how I started to pursue my badminton career.
Their achievements also inspired a lot of
Indonesians in general.
It has become our motivation that Indonesian badminton
athletes can bring pride to our country.

The Thomas Cup is a team event, so it describes the actual
badminton strength of each country.
Which country wins the Thomas Cup is acknowledged
to have the best foundation,
because the tournament involves
teams of three men's singles players
and two doubles pairs.
Back in those days, the men's singles was
the most prestigious.
Therefore, I hoped to make the men's doubles sector
as prestigious as the men's singles.
I was playing men's doubles and mixed doubles.
But I also had to continue observing,
scouting talent for the men's doubles for players
who could become great champions
and raise the profile of the men's doubles sector.

the other may be more emotional and hot-tempered.
This is important on the court.
The one with the calm and cool character can handle the moment
when they are lagging behind.

the one with more of a temper can inspire emotion
and motivation.
There's no secret.
We only observe and understand the character
of each individual to be integrated.
The most important thing is their playing styles,
how we can unite the different characters
to create a formidable force.

Rexy and I were paired for the first time in 1991
when my coaches Christian Hadinata and Atik Jauhari
made that decision.
Before I paired up with Rexy, I was playing with his brother,
Richard Mainaky.
Richard and I were chasing points
for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
The focus was on reaching the Olympics.
The coach told me he was breaking up our partnership.

It meant all our points were automatically gone
once I paired up with Richard's younger brother
Initially, I refused.
I wanted to play at Barcelona in 1992.
The coach said, "Don't look at '92 Barcelona,
but look ahead to '96 Atlanta."
The coaches at the time were Christian Hadinata
and Atik Jauhari, and that was their plan.

Almost immediately, our new team began showing results.
We became champions.

We won the Indonesia Open, Japan Open, Korea Open,
All-England, World Championship,
Thomas Cup and Asian Games.
Rexy and I were ranked number one in the world at the time.
As we got closer to reaching the '96 Atlanta Olympics,
I kept telling Rexy whenever we won a major tournament
such as the All-England,
that I wished this were the Olympics.
We were afraid to miss the chance and the moment
to win the Olympic gold.

With the various events I've ever competed in my career,
every achievement that I've ever had becomes complete
with the Olympic gold medal.
It had not been a fight for one or two months,
one or two years.
This was quite a long process to finally reach
the highest peak that I could ever achieve.
It was achieved with the greatest sense of satisfaction
and gratitude.
Most importantly, I got to see our national flag raised
and our national anthem sung at the Atlanta Olympics.

There is also another tournament
where they can earn points for national ranking.
All athletes who participate will have a national ranking,

The national championship winner from five sectors
will join the national training camp.
The club or club athletes competing in the national
championship circuits would be ranked on their performance,
and then their results in the national championships.
They're not only playing to show their techniques,
but also their physique and stamina.
There are several criteria that need to be fulfilled
if they want to join the national team.
From this long process,
that is how they join the national training camp,
and we consider that they are the best.

There are two kinds of badminton clubs.

The first kind of club is focused on achievements,
which means the club focuses on
grooming athletes for excellence.
On the other hand, there are clubs that focus on
coaching the basics and promoting badminton.
For clubs focusing on achievement,
talent scouting is very important.
Our national and international players are coming from
these clubs.
National players like Hendra, Ahsan, Tontonwi
and Liliyana come from badminton clubs.
If the coaching and development at the club is good,
I think the achievements in the national and international
arenas will be good too.
Our own club (PB Djarum) will take players
under 13-15 years old.
In my opinion, coaching them to become champions
and good players takes approximately 3-5 years.

Before we competed in the Asian Games,
we didn't expect to win the gold.
But we just never gave up, me and my partner
and the coaches as well.
And the team kept reminding us that we had the ability, so we

had to trust and be confident in ourselves and just do it.
Jaya Raya Club, my first club,
conducts training three times a week.
Then we continue to train more if there is a need.
It was like a school for badminton.
They will have auditions for 10-year-olds - that's when
we get more achievements through competitions.
If we get the achievements, we get directly
into the dormitory of Jaya Raya.
We have to have achievements first
as kids, and the talent as well.
They look out for that.
I was qualified for the national team in 2003
at the age of 15.
I had to be number one in the national competition.
I had to work hard to achieve the best
that I can in that area first
before I could enter the national team.
It was quite hard for me as a teenager.
My family background wasn't that rich.
Badminton could bring us to the next level
so I just try, you know, to make it better for life.
To make more money is a secondary thought for me
For me, my first priority is always the achievement.
Whenever we get the number one, of course,
we will get the bonus and money,
but I just keep focusing on my goals, like my achievements
on what I have to do, what I have to reach.
I really love badminton, I really love this game.
I just want to enjoy every training session,
to work hard, as hard as I can.
I want to give the best that I can for this country.
