alright guys I'm back from Rennsport I had a great time but I'm anxious to get
going on the car again so this week I am going to work on this panel this is the
cover panel that goes over the suspension mounts it gets mounted on the
inside and I did not buy a new one because I'm cheap and this is a budget
build so I'm gonna try to repair this one the best I can and hopefully reuse
it but before I do that I have to realign the hood all the jacking I did
to get the suspension points lined up meant up the hood got out of alignment
again so I get any I need to hit that first and then back to getting all this
wrapped up welcome to garage time this channel is all about inspiring
confidence in you to get out in your garage or shop and build something cool
I'm taking this wrecked and stripped out Porsche 911 shell and turning it into a
hot rod and not just throwing it together I'm taking doing everything to
the best of my ability so I really hope that you enjoy it if you do please

okay I've just finished a mad kind of thrash session trying to get the hood
lined up again to the chassis and I had to take the fenders off too to get that
done and this is the second time I've done this the good news is it's all
lined up now suspension points are still good the hood is lined up to where the
fenders attached so I know that the hook the fenders will have a good gap between
the hood again but the bad news is you know I had I've done this twice and I
really should have done the suspension pan before I did the hood alignment the
hood alignment was a good plumbing airy step so if you do this yourself you know
make sure you get all the chassis repairs done first and then save the
body alignments and hood alignments for last that's what I should have done it
all turned out fine in the end you might have noticed that it was well it was a
little more difficult doing it the second time around so it's kind of like
a paper clip when you bend metal the first time it's pretty easy to bend and
then when you go to bend that metal back it it doesn't Bend in the same spot
because the metal is work-hardened it gets a little stronger as you bend it so
when I had to move it remember the first time I moved it I sort of moved this
over this way and after I had done all that jacking with the with the porta
power to try to get the suspension points to line up you know I was moving
this a lot it was going back and forth you know an inch or more and I thought
it might affect the hood gap and it did and so it turns out that I had to put it
right back in the same kind of opposite direction as it was before so going back
to the paperclip analogy the metal I think was a little stronger the second
time around and it wasn't moving as easily so I had to make some cuts do
some additional welding just to get it back into the stock stock place but it's
done now and I have a little bit more welding to do there but I want to now
move on to that cover and get that sorted out okay this is what the part
looked like when he was taken from the car I've done nothing to clean it up or
do anything to it this black paint was applied by the factory apparently and
the section that really needs some some help is is right here so this flange got
a little mangled when I removed it plus it's pretty thin just because it's got
some rust on this edge so everything else looks like it's salvageable so this
is pretty thin metal but I'm gonna do my best to try to make this fit so I'm
gonna clean it up a little bit on my bench grinder with a wire brush all
right here's the part with kind of the first pass of D rusting and wire
brushing and I'd strained out a couple like dents and some of the damage I did
when I took it out here's some rusty areas and I was just gonna replace the
flange back here that's missing that's the flange that's missing but I think
I'm gonna probably replace this little triangle too these are the welds from an
additional bracket where the battery support goes not sure I even need that
battery support now but so I'm just gonna start cutting and just welding any
pieces but before I do that I want to put it in the car and just see how it
fits all right the nice thing about using
this part over again is I can I can line up the the spot welds of where it was
previously and you know it fits like a glove there's it's gonna be easy to
reinstall this piece once I get it fixed before I weld it in I'm also going to I
think I mentioned in a previous video this flange right here is a little bit
off it's a little bit a little bit round and I was gonna square it off a little
bit to make make this easier to weld to and also I need to go grab the gas tank
and make sure the gas tank fits
okay this thing's getting a little too hot so I thought I would take a break
and show you how it looks some of the welds are not finished and some of them
are not ground down but this is blending in pretty nice having second thoughts
whether this was worth it but I mean it is going well and I think the benefits
is that this is going to fit pretty nicely in the car without having a lot
of modifications I have a feeling if I bought a new one I would have to you
know one pay for it and to modify it to you know fit well enough into the car so
this is probably a wash in terms of efficiency but I appreciate your
patience on watching me get through all this
okay this is looking pretty good here I need to you know tune up this flange a
little bit get it ready for final welding but I think I'm gonna get this
part sandblasted before I start prepping it for for paint and and in rust
protection so I'm gonna take it out okay the other really important thing to do
here is to include these brackets these are genuine Porsche parts let me open it
up okay so as you can see these just fit over the the holes and they get welded
into this sidewall it has this tab here for additional strength
all right so I'm going to replace the paint the e-coat or powder coat whatever
was on here I'm gonna replace that with this weld through primer from like 90
just on the surfaces that are going to see the heat from the plug welds so I'm
gonna do that on this part and also on the galvanized side just for a little
extra protection it's gonna give that you know five or ten minutes the dry
dries pretty quick and then I'm going to clamp it and get those welded on okay
this primers had a chance to dry so one of the things I like to do prior to
hitting it with the with the MIG welder and do the rosette welds I like to take
some of this TIG wire and just clean out the holes so you know clearly the weld
through primer is gonna get displaced right at the hole so I just scratch it
out
okay this is the new bracket has been completely welded in I did the you know
four so rosette welds plug welds there's two more on the back there but I also
went back with the TIG welder and laid down these little lap welds on the edges
it's gonna make it super strong there's also a lap weld on the back and then the
factory didn't tie these in to the sheet metal bracket these are the bosses for
the threaded bolt so it's tight in here and tied in here so it's gonna be super
strong definitely overkill I actually feel sorry for the next guy who has to
remove this so next up is the sandblasting of the top cover and then
preparing those parts for rust prevention and then getting that welded
in as well
the sandblaster wasn't working as well as it should
so I'm going to is just going to slow so I'm gonna stop here and figure something
else out to clean this up okay this week has not been as productive as I had
hoped I had hoped to get that a suspension pan
completely finished up this week and it wasn't for a lack of trying I spent a
lot of time getting the hood realignment done didn't really show so much on
camera but a lot of time got sunk into that plus the repair of the fuel tank
support and the sandblaster just not working out so unfortunately that's all
the time I have for this week but the good news is the garage time shirts are
