Who Killed Syria? | Syria 12 - Duration: 3:09.
We all know that the war in Syria isn't really a civil war anymore.
It's a proxy war.
The war would have been over long ago, and it would have been far less bloody, if it
weren't for outside powers like the United States and Russia.
Everyone who has researched the issue for more than ten minutes understands this.
But there is a major misconception in the way we look at this in the West, and that's
what we will address today.
In 2011, it really was a civil war.
The story we're still being told was true.
Heroic activists rose up against a brutal dictator.
Then the United States jumped in, and changed everything.
Under US leadership and coordination, Turkish, NATO, and Gulf elements piled in to support
the rebels with arms, media support, humanitarian aid, and a blind eye towards the foreign fighters
streaming in to make the rebellion more Jihadist.
Without this support the rebellion would have been over long ago, and ISIS would never have
become a factor.
Russia and Iran responded with military support, air power, their own soldiers and Shia militias
from Lebanon, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Without this support Assad would have fallen long ago.
It's the foreign support that has made this civil war as long and bloody as it is.
Most commentators concede that what we're seeing is a proxy war and that that's a
bad thing.
But that's where the analysis ends.
There's a crucial fact that gets left out.
When people lament the Syrian proxy war, they act as if both sides are equally to blame
for what has happened.
When people complain about US or Turkish imperialism, the response is often, but what about Russian
and Iranian imperialism?
The crucial fact they are missing is this.
Russia and Iran are status quo actors in this conflict.
It's the US and its allies that are trying to change the country.
In 2010, Syria was governed by Assad.
It was one of the only countries in the world that was closely allied with Russia and Iran.
What did we expect them to do?
When the US and its allies launched a massive effort to destroy the Syrian government, Russia
and Iran had to respond.
The Assad regime is a bad one.
But that's not what destroyed the country, and may be destroying the European Union as
we speak.
It's the US proxy war of choice that did that.
Russia and Iran didn't choose this war.
We did.
We killed Syria.
And we didn't do it for the Syrian people, we did it to score points against Russia and
Iran.
It's quite possible that this bloody proxy war is exactly what Washington, DC intended.

Last Excommunicated Ruler: History in a Minute (Episode 21) - Duration: 1:38.
Hey, this is Mr. Philip Campbell with
Homeschool Connections History in a
Minute, I am your bearded, nerdy history
guru. Hey, so you ever wonder who was the
last ruler of a nation or kingdom who
was formerly excommunicated by name by
the Catholic Church? The last ruler to be
formally excommunicated by name. Was it
Adolf Hitler. No, it was not. Hitler was
never, he was a baptized Catholic, but
never a practicing Catholic.
Excommunicating him really wouldn't do anything.
King Victor Emmanuel the Second of Italy
was excommunicated in 1870, but not by
name. There was a blanket excommunication
of all participants in the Seizure of
the Papal States and he was implicated
in that but not by name. In fact, the last
excommunicated ruler to be
excommunicated formally by name was
Napoleon Bonaparte, who was
excommunicated in the year 1809 by Pope
Pius the Seventh. Napoleon of course went
on to kidnap the Pope in hopes of
bringing the Catholic Church into
submission. It didn't work obviously. It
was Napoleon's empire that ultimately
collapsed, but the Catholic Church just
kept on going on, as it always does and
will do until the end of time. So
Napoleon Bonaparte, 1809. Hey you like

Why You Don't Hear About This Craft Star Anymore - Duration: 5:24.
In the mid-'90s Fairuza Balk was the talk of the town, thanks to her menacing turns
in The Craft and as the neo-Nazi girlfriend to Edward Norton's American History X persona.
She also hit the mainstream with roles in Adam Sandler's The Waterboy and the disastrous
adaptation of The Island of Doctor Moreau.
But somewhere around the turn of the millennium, the actress disappeared from the spotlight.
So what happened to the actress who'd thrilled and chilled on the big screen?
Here's why we don't hear much from Fairuza Balk anymore.
Always the gloom girl
What people might not know about Balk is that she actually started out as a child actress.
She starred in the moody 1985 Wizard of Oz sequel, titled Return to Oz, at just 11 years
old and went on to lead the TV movie The Worst Witch, too.
That spooky, gloomy on-screen personality would follow her career all the way through
— mostly because she was so good at it.
And she solidified her status as the go-to goth girl when she played lead wiccan outcast
Nancy Downs in The Craft.
That off-kilter persona has since been hard to shake.
And while goth chic was all the rage in the late '90s, that wild style has hardly held
up since.
At this point, Balk is kinda sick of being typecast in witchy roles as well.
She told Shockya, quote: "People have tended to see me as an actress who has played edgier,
darker roles.
That's something that as much as I've enjoyed exploring, isn't necessarily the one thing
I want to do."
End quote.
Of course, her actions tell another story …
Oddball antics
If Balk ever really wanted to change the public's perception of her as the freaky femme fatale
sort, her off-screen activities weren't helping much.
"You girls watch out for those weirdos."
"We are the weirdos mister."
Some fans of The Craft have cooked up conspiracy theories about Balk joining the occult in
real-life after doing so on-screen.
And co-star Robin Tunney added fuel to that speculation fire.
She told The Guardian, quote: "My memory is that Fairuza Balk, who plays Nancy, was actually
into witchcraft.
She seemed to know a lot about it, and there's an authenticity to her performance."
End quote.
In 2013, when Balk was a guest on the Bio Channel's "Haunting Of" series, even her ghost-hunter,
who didn't know of her career past, reported getting witchy vibes off of Balk right away,
too.
So yeah.
Maybe there was a reason she was so adept at invoking the spirit of Manol after all.
Box office bummers
Even when dark threads and scary sensuality were still in vogue, Balk couldn't quite capitalize
on her burgeoning fame.
Although her appearances in The Craft and movies like Almost Famous nearly earned her
household name status, her follow-up films totally tanked with critics and audiences
alike.
Chances are, you've never even heard of films like Deuces Wild and Dose of Reality.
And that's because those Balk-starring pics were panned, box office blunders that did
no favors to Fairuza Balk's future in the biz.
She did start getting an uptick in her Rotten Tomatoes score thanks to supporting roles
in indies like Wild Tigers I Have Known and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.
Her most significant return to screen presence happened in 2015, when she nabbed a recurring
role on Showtime's crime drama series Ray Donovan.
But her work has still been nowhere near the mainstream in recent years.
Other avenues of artwork
Although she has been acting since grade school, Balk has also been quietly working on other
forms of creative expression, including music, performance, and drawn art pieces.
Not only is she a talented jazz and rock singer, but she's also been releasing her drawings
for sale on her website.
She also designs and paints clothing parcels and intends to record and release an album.
Abstaining from the fame game
In the 2014 film documentary Lost Soul, Balk revealed that she didn't subscribe to the
same professional philosophies of some of her peers, saying:
"There are no morals.
There are no...there's no integrity.
At all.
they'd sell their child down the river for money."
So, understandably, her approach to the movie business has been a bit different than most.
She told Dread Central that she feels a need to be interested by a potential acting project's
merit, rather than the bottom line of any given opportunity, saying, quote:
"I never just want to work for the sake of working.
There has to be 'something' there for me so that I can grow from the experience.
… I struggled a lot with being pushed too hard in my 20's, with people telling me that
I had to keep taking more and more movies because that's really only when I'd be relevant.
… There's no satisfaction in working like that, at least for me."
End quote.
Time for a turnaround?
Even though Balk's public profile has taken a dip in recent years, it's clear she's still
willing to work if the right opportunity presents itself.
And she's got one project she's just itching to brush the dust off of.
Her indie pic August Falls, which she's described as her most happy set experience of all time,
is still pending release.
And she told Fangoria that she hopes to find something completely surprising for her next
big role, saying, quote:
"For me it's all about continuing to explore where I can go with acting as well as music,
as well as art.
I hope the next time I get the chance to play a role that no one expects.
I have explored the dark, heavy duty parts in depth… maybe I'll try a more subtle character
in the future."
End quote
Until then, there's always plenty of solid throwback material to mine through.
"I'm flying."

Why Didn't I Self-Publish? - Duration: 2:21.
Hi community of awesome, I'm Ava Jae and this is bookishpixie.
So some years before I got my agent and I'd written five books and querying wasn't going
well, I started getting some questions about why I didn't just self-publish.
They largely asked because I'd been writing for a while at that point and put away a bunch
of manuscripts and self-publishing was becoming a big thing so why not?
And I kind of hit a turning point with this book because I totally believed in the project
and I loved it so much, so the thought of having to trunk it was a little harder than usual.
So, being the kind of person that I am, I started doing a lot of research.
I learned a lot about self-publishing from the basics, to marketing, to formatting your
book, and editing, and creating the book cover, and everything else.
And I read more posts than I can count about the pros and cons of self-publishing.
What became undeniable to me was if I chose to self-publish, it would A) change my career
plans as a writer, and B) require a lot more responsibility and work than just writing the book.
And that's without even considering the monetary stuff, because I recognized if I wanted to
do it right, I was going to have to hire some people to help.
So I gave it some real consideration, until I kinda decided that I didn't really want
to have to do all that extra stuff by myself.
I knew that I personally wanted the career guidance and partnership of working with an agent.
I wanted a champion in my career that could help me navigate the ups and downs of a writing career.
And, if I was being honest with myself, my dream was to see my book published, preferably
in hardcover, and distributed to bookstores nationwide.
And to be frank, I knew the chances of getting that were not-so-good with self-publishing.
Ultimately, I realized that if I had self-published, it would've been to try the roundabout route
of getting an agent, which didn't make sense because it's easier to get an agent if you
haven't already self-published your manuscript.
In fact, most agents will tell you if you've self-published your manuscript to query them with the next one.
Self-publishing is a totally legitimate choice, but I eventually had to come to the realization
that it just wasn't the right choice for me.
So, I decided at that point that even if it meant I never got published, I was going to
pursue traditional publishing exclusively.
And it took me several more years and five more manuscripts, but it ended up
being the right choice for me.
Traditional publishing isn't for everyone, and it certainly has its downsides.
But I don't regret my decision for a second.
So that's what I've got for today!
If you liked what you saw, don't forget to subscribe and comment, and I'll see you guise next week!

Strange Celeb Ancestors That Explain A Lot - Duration: 5:24.
Nature versus nurture is a debate that, frankly, most of us really don't care about.
But every once in awhile, you just have to wonder whether that craving for corn dogs
is learned behavior or due to the genetic legacy bequeathed to you by one of your ancestors.
And the same question holds true for celebrities.
The talented, the beautiful, the powerful — did they become famous simply because
they won the genetic lottery?
Here's a look at some of the stranger celebrity ancestors that explain a lot about their famous
descendants.
Tom Hanks' presidential pedigree
Hollywood icon Tom Hanks is known for his upstanding, everyman demeanor.
So where does he get his all-American personna from?
Well, it might be because he comes from the same line as the most American American of
all time: Abraham Lincoln.
Yes, Lincoln's mother was Nancy Hanks, making Honest Abe and the star of Joe Versus the
Volcano distant cousins.
The resemblance is uncanny.
Emma Watson's witchy woman
In Harry Potter, Hermione Granger was often ridiculed by the forces of He Who Must Not
Be Named for having no magic in her bloodline.
"How dare you talk to me, you filthy little mudblood."
But it turns out that's not quite true.
According to an Ancestry.com expose, actress Emma Watson is 14th cousins with a real witch.
Well, at least, as far as the English courts were concerned, since they convicted Watson's
ancestor, Joan Playle of witchcraft, excommunicating her from the Church of England in the process.
Who's the mudblood now, Draco?!
And as it turns out, there's another interesting ancestral connection within the world of Harry
Potter...
J.K.
Rowling's heroic legacy
In 2009, Harry Potter author J.K.
Rowling was awarded France's highest honor, the Legion d'honneur, for her literary service
to the world.
But it wasn't the first time her family had been singled out for upholding the ideals
of France.
Rowling's great-grandfather, Louis Valant, earned the croix d'e guerre for displaying
uncommon bravery at the Battle of Verdun during World War I.
"It's better.
The Croix d'e Guerre is much better than the Legion d'Honneur."
Now we know just how Rowling was able to craft those amazing tales of heroism: seems she
was drawing on her own family's legacy.
President Obama's All-American roots
His rise from the son of a struggling single mother to the leader of the free world is
the quintessential American story.
And it turns out his ancestry is just as uniquely American.
According to genealogists, President Obama is actually descended from John Bunch, the
son of John Punch, one of the first African slaves in American history.
But that's not all.
"John Bunch's mother was white.
And so was his wife.
Which means that President Obama descends from the first known black and white couple
that left traceable descendants."
"We are the ones we've been waiting for."
Katharine Hepburn's ancient muse
All-time great Hollywood actress Katharine Hepburn is known for playing iconic film roles
such as Eleanor of Aquitaine in the classic film The Lion in Winter.
Surprisingly, she had a leg up on her competition: the real Eleanor of Aquitaine was actually
one of her ancestors.
That wasn't her only royal connection to a part she played, either.
She's also related to James Hepburn, the third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, who Katharine
Hepburn played in Mary of Scotland.
Talk about authenticity...
America Ferrera's revolutionary roots
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants actress America Ferrera has been breaking down barriers
and standing up for her beliefs throughout her career.
And it seems she comes by it naturally.
Her great-grandfather, General Gregorio Ferrera, was a revered rebel leader in Honduras who
repeatedly led movements to protect the rights of the people against the country's corrupt
government regimes.
And like his great-granddaughter America, he also gained his powers via a pair of magic
pants.
Okay, that part isn't true, but the rest of it totally is.
Adam Vinatieri's Last Stand
Legendary NFL kicker Adam Vinatieri is renowned for keeping his cool under fire, helping his
teams win four Super Bowls thanks to his clutch performances.
Where did he get that ice water in his veins from?
Probably from his great-great-grandfather, Felix Vinatieri, who served in the military
under the command of General George Armstrong Custer.
Yes, that General Custer.
Felix was even slated to accompany Custer on the mission that would go down in history
as Custer's Last Stand, but Custer ordered Felix, who was the unit's band leader, to
remain behind with his bandmates and await their victorious return.
And we thought Super Bowl 36 was a close call!
Meryl Streep is everything
Finally, there's Meryl Streep, who is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest actresses
of all time.
She has so many talents, it's impossible to trace them back to just one strange ancestor.
But that's fine, because Streep descended from a slew of noteworthy forebears.
Besides being directly related to a cousin of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania,
she is also the descendant of one of the members of Pennsylvania's constitutional congress
in 1776.
Her family arrived in America the old-fashioned way.
During the English Civil War, her ancestors were thrown out of the country, only to help
start another war — King Phillip's War against the Native American tribes of Massachusetts
— once they arrived in the New World.
Is it any wonder Streep is able to bring such complexity and command to her roles?
"We're so ignorant of our back-history, you know, we're very busy with our own lives,
and we're the sum of all the people who lived before us."
