I am not sure if you're aware, but I LOVE fighting games, more than ANY other type of
game!
There's not a single aspect about the genre that I don't like.
Of course, it goes without saying that not all fighters are created equal.
I've been playing fighting games for the vast majority of my time spent gaming, starting
with Street Fighter 2 on the SNES.
Over the years I've played a lot of games in this niche, naturally I came across a lot
of bad eggs as well, but I've also missed quite a few gems here and there.
Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension on the Super Nintendo is one of those gems.
I didn't get to play this game until much, much later on an Emulator.
Every single 1-on-1 Dragon Ball game that followed after that, was shoddy at best, or
not actually a game that sits within that genre.
The Xenoverse games for example are great, but I wouldn't classify them as fighting
games.
Of course Street Fighter is still current, but like many people playing the game, I have
a serious Love-Hate relationship with Street Fighter V. I dare say, an unhealthy one even.
On one hand, I am having so much fun when everything is working as intended, that's
to say swift matching-making, no lag, run-backs and so on.
That unfortunately isn't the norm, at least not for me, matching making is still extremely
slow, loading times are continuing to amplify this, connections are extremely patchy and
80% of the time, the person you just beat will run away immediately, leaving me yet
again waiting and praying another match will even be found.
Again, this is just my experience of course and yours might be better, that's great,
mine just hasn't been.
With that I've become more and more reluctant to even fire up the game, as I feel like I
am just wasting my time, waiting for a match to even pop up.
Given my frustration I was more than ready to ditch SFV as soon as Marvel VS Capcom:
Infinite is available for purchase, but then, out of nowhere, Dragon Ball Fighter Z
Or Dragon Ball Fighter Z (Zee)... I dunno!
was teased and immediately followed up with a gameplay trailer and a playable build on the
E3 showfloor.
I haven't been to E3, so I am very sad to say, that I don't have hands on experience,
but from everything I've seen about this game so far and that the devs have come out
to say that the game is only about 20% finished yet, my hopes for this game are above and
beyond every other fighter for the past 10 years or so.
I don't really play anime fighters, as they're all a bit too… well anime for me.
That's why I could never really get into the Guilty Gears, Arcana Hearts, UniELs, Blazblues
and whatever else you have there.
The characters just never really resonated with me, as well defined as they might have
been.
Dragon Ball on the other hand is very different.
Dragon Ball represents and transports me back to my childhood, as it does for a LOT of other
people.
We've all watched or read Goku's journeys, getting stronger, growing up, having a family,
finding out about his background as he learned about it and the list just goes on and on…
hell, this list is being updated as I am recording this, with Super still on the Air and the
tournament of power still not having started.
What I am trying to get to is, much like everyone else, I instantly fell in love with what was
presented for the upcoming Dragon Ball Fighter Z during E3!
Dragon Ball Fighter Z just might be THE game I was waiting for this entire time, without
even knowing it.
The Dragon Ball property, a globally beloved franchise, that appeals to both casual gamers
and fighting game connoisseurs alike, finally being handled by a developer that actually
knows how to make a fighting game, who proved how amazing an anime style can look in motion,
during gameplay, with the current iteration of Guilty Gear, there's absolutely nothing
within this combination that's not exciting.
Of course, the launch day could be a very rude awakening, if things like single player
modes, for the casual crowds, as well as the online modes for the more seasoned fighting
game players turn out to be lacking, bad or not functional altogether.
It wouldn't be the first time.
It's still quite a ways off, I am staying positive for now and hope for the best!
As it stands right now, I'll still be jumping ship to Marvel when it's out and while I
don't know what's going to happen with my time on Street Fighter V, as I do really
enjoy it, when it's actually working properly, I might just take a break for a while.
Now if C. Viper becomes available during Season 3 though… actually that's probably just
going to be another pipe dream of mine so forget about that.
Marvel will be my main focus when that's out and as soon as Dragon Ball hits the digital
storefronts, I'll be 100% on that.
What fighting games are you currently playing and looking forward to?
Have you already devoted your time to Injustice 2 and/or Tekken 7?
Are you you waiting for Marvel or Dragon Ball?
