Media Lost #15: Treehouse of Horror - Duration: 4:44.
Hello and welcome back to Media Lost. Now, it's been a little while since I've made one of these videos
So for those unfamiliar with this series, we basically take a piece of obscure media and contextualize it
We give a little bit of background, find some related clips and recall any memories associated with said media.
I'm excited, as we're gonna be talking about one of my favorite things The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror.
This is their annual Halloween special. and while I realize there is absolutely nothing obscure about this
We are gonna be looking at it through a 20 year old issue of TV Guide
Ever since I was a kid Fall has always been my favorite season with Halloween being my favorite holiday.
I find it lacks the sentimentality and I guess religious baggage of Christmas
and really just feels like a celebration of fun.
It encourages and brings out people's creativity in the way they decorate their houses or the costumes they
create. It is the one time of year where it is socially acceptable to express yourself and the things you love
by becoming them, or escape into something else.
Growing up I had several Halloween traditions passed down to me like the Great Pumpkin
or the Garfield special, but the first one I really developed on my own was Treehouse of Horror.
It's no secret that the Simpsons are very important to me and the first episode I remember seeing was the first
Treehouse of Horror.
I'm assuming this would have been a rerun as this is one of my earliest memories
and I would have been much too young to remember when I first aired.
Treehouse of Horror began during the Simpsons second season. The first one aired on October 25th,
1990 with one airing every year since then.
These episodes break the show's format, rather than having one long kind of narrative
they have three self-contained segments, all generally horror or science fiction themed.
Earlier ones feature a device that would allow these stories to be told within the Simpsons universe
So either they would be scary stories being told or scary dreams being had.
They have since abandoned this and not that the Simpsons Canon really means much anymore
but these are non-canonical.
Treehouse of Horror takes a lot of inspiration from old anthology series,
such as EC Comics or especially the Twilight Zone and often features parodies of famous horror movies.
I could probably make-nay-probably will make a video just on how much The Simpsons has influenced me.
Most relevant to this it introduced me to so much media I would have never known existed otherwise,
simply through parody.
For years, these were my only frame of reference and it's possible that I would have never sought out or been able to
appreciate the source material if not for the Simpsons.
One of my earliest videos was about my love of TV Guide.
For those too young to remember what TV Guide was
it was a magazine that featured television listings as well as stories from the world of television and
previews and stuff like that.
This issue covers the week of October 17th through 23rd, 1998 and is dedicated to previewing upcoming
Halloween content. It details Halloween themed episodes of such shows as
Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place
Home Improvement, Suddenly Susan and the New Addams Family.
It also features a countdown of the twenty scariest movies as of, I guess, 1998.
The list is not perfect. I disagree with some of it though I can't argue with number one.
I love collecting these because I think they're the perfect snapshots into what television was at a certain period of
time and I especially enjoy when I'm familiar with that time, as I am with 1998, all I was doing was watching
television but I got this one because of the cover story.
It features the Simpsons with these great illustrations and promotes Treehouse of Horror 9.
The segments in this episode include Hell Toupee, where Homer gets a hair transplant from Snake
and ends up being possessed by him.
Terror of Tiny Toon where Bart and Lisa gets sucked into the television and into an episode of Itchy and Scratchy,
and Starship Poopers, where it is revealed that Marge had a one-night stand with Kang
and that Kang is Maggie's father
This issue was settled on Jerry Springer because 1998.
For many people, I think season 10 of The Simpsons was a jumping-off point.
This is generally attributed to a dip in quality though
I have stuck with the show over the past two decades and will continue to defend it.
Well some segments fall flat, I think Treehouse of Horror still ranks amongst the best episodes of every season.
For me, they're still essential viewing every October.
I love that the writers are still introducing new generations to media that are all but forgotten
Things like Orson Welles' War of the Worlds broadcast or Todd Browning's Freaks.
I don't think it's a stretch to say that had they not done this in the past for me,
you would not be watching this video.

I had a cardiac arrest.

My daughter was completing ... in that day... three years old ...
and when the first guests were arriving ...
I felt a very strong pain in my chest.

I came close to him and said my last words:

and ... without saying a word he started heading towards the hospital.
Right after ... very few minutes after...
this pain went up to a huge peak ...
and I lost consciousness.
Right after I lost my senses ...
immediately I began to see my spirit dislocated from my body.
And I started to perceive myself out of that car.
I was out ... staring at me ... in the car.
I wasn't understanding what was happening ...
All this while you were on the way to the hospital?
While I was going to the hospital.
So... I followed the car during that path ...
from outside the car ...
I could see all his attitude ... looking at me unconscious ... in the car seat ...
and ... when he stopped ... at the entrance of the emergency department of the hospital...

It was a collision of a bus with a truck ...

"Get her out of here immediately ... do not choose the hospital ... the first you find ..."
A short time later I began to understand what was happening.
I realized ... by the physiognomy ... of his face ...
that there was nothing else to do.
That is ... why to receive a body that would divert the attention ...
of the whole team that was at the entrance ...
receiving the other wounded who would have the opportunity to live.
People who would go to the operating room and who would really need first aid.
I did not need that anymore.
My case was already over.

How wonderful it is...
not to have the body.
How nice it is, what a situation of freedom.
How this body weighs us down.
How this body ...
how this body, that makes us stand here on Earth ...
This body is painfull.
When you no longer have this body ... you feel ... and much ... this difference.
And that feeling began to dazzle me.
Did not you see stars ...?
Did you see the sun?
Did you see the moon?
I've seen stars for some time ...
I think my distance was getting so big ...
I do not ... I do not know if I've gone beyond the stars ...
or if from some moment I was no longer allowed to see the stars.
How much did you distance yourself from Earth?
Very much ... because I saw it very small.
How small ... if you put your fingers like this...

And it disappeared.
There came a time when it disappeared.
And more and more I had this feeling ...
this wonderful feeling ... that I did not know where I was going to ...
but it was such a good feeling ...
My heart was happy.

I started to see ... moments of my life.
When I was a child ...
I saw myself playing with other children ...
I saw myself very young...
my first boyfriend
my father ... my mother ...
it was like I was watching a great retrospective of my life.
I was not understanding why these flashes were appearing ...
why those scenes were being shown ...

I started to think it was normal.
Since I was leaving ... life ... I...
At that moment were you fully aware that you had died?

this thing of realizing that I was still alive ...

This was a very good sensation.
This certainty was wonderful.

In fact, we could not talk about it at my house.
My mother was a very Catholic woman ... so what is written there is what it is to be followed ...

And more and more ... this person who was waiting for me ...
I started to perceive her ... before I saw her.
I did not see her.
And it got stronger and stronger and stronger ... and ...
I wish I could draw ... to be able to portray that person's face.
It was a woman ...
she had black hair
very pretty...
long ...
she was thin
she was of medium height
she wore ... a kind of tunica fulfilled ...
long-sleeved ...
with something tied ... I believe a rope ...
around the waist.
It had a different blue color ... which I do not know ...

Where was this blue?
In her clothes.

and there was my anxiety ... and my joy ...
at being able ... to embrace that person ... who was waiting for me ...
and the feeling of love for that person...
she was someone I was going to meet again ...
after a long time.
I can not tell you whether she was an ancestor ...
I do not know who that person was ...
but that person flooded me with love.
I knew it was going to be wonderful to meet her again, to embrace her and to be in that place.
At this time...
on the big screen
I saw the image of my daughter ...
who on that day was completing three years of life ...
and ...
also inexplicably ...
I began to receive a communication through my mind.
Someone ... possibly that person who was waiting for me ... that woman ...
said to me ... "it's not your time ... you can not ... finish arriving ..."
"you have to return."
And I ... "how to return?" ... "return to where?" ...
"I do not want to go back to any place ... I want to continue ..."
Then she started to give me guidance ...
but when I saw on screen ... the image of my daughter ... so fragile ...
Then I started ... to weigh ...
the husband I was leaving ...
the mother I was leaving ...
the life I had ...
my professional life starting ...
and a daughter ... so loved.
But even so...
despite all these feelings ...
I wanted to continue ... I did not want to return.
But this person was trying to make me understand ... that ... no...
that one day [that would happen] ... but not at that moment ...
that I needed to go back ...
that I had things to do ...
that I had things to accomplish ...
So the conversation took a long time?
Yes...
because I'm good at persuading others ...
I had many arguments ...
such as ... "I do not want to go back" ...
"here is good"...
I mean ... where I was it was not good but I knew I was going to a good place.
I wanted to live again ...
You just said ... "where I was it was not good" ... you mean here? ... incarnate?
Or there ... where you were?
I mean that vacuum ... that "vacuum cleaner" ...
Didn't you feel ... at that moment ... a sense of fullness ... of pleasure ...
But I knew it would get much better ... as soon as I crossed that limit ...
and I was very close to it.
That voice you said could be from that woman ...
so I can conclude that you felt it was a female voice?
Yes.
But when the image of my daughter appeared ...
it was as if that woman was "working" on that big screen.
She explained me ...
that she would also like to meet me again ...
that she wanted to hug me too ...
but that was not the time ...
I had to go back.
And we stayed there ... for a while ...
and then my heart began to soften in relation to my daughter ...
after thinking ... I think that woman helped me to think that way.
that she [my daughter] was a child who needed to have the guidance of a mother ...
the love, the affection of a mother.
And that I needed to go back to prepare her for life.
But I used arguments like ... "she has a father" ... "my mother" ...
"my brother really likes my daughter" ...
"they will take good care of her" ...
But she did not let me ... no.
She refuted my arguments.
But she only convinced me when she said the following:
"one day..."
"it won't take so long..."
"get back to your life ..."
"do ... what needs to be done ..."
"don't leave anything unfinished ..."
"later it would be worse."
"So... return to your life ..."
"fulfill what you have already promised ... that you would do ..."
"do well done ..."
"and I'll be waiting for you."
With these words ...
I understood that no matter how much I wanted ...
how much ... I had the feeling ...
that that place was my true home ...
that there ... I would be very happy ...

An animal, a dog, for example,
that is locked inside the house
and that bites and is mistreated,
it is out of its habitat;
who is brought into the room, and that
sometimes, unconsciously, if it lends him
the place of a child, is in some circumstances
an exaggeration because the
treatments and the care, so excessive,
are that the animal, in spite of love and
positive energy, they are curtailed
in the integrity of their own species;
so some veterinarians are
nowadays positioned.
The animal needs respect, love ... it is our
brother in an inferior condition, in a language of the
spirits speaking of creation;
it will walk with us to other
worlds and he is on his way
later to a process of humanization,
but he is not yet a human being,
it is a subject, but he is not a person,
until we could express ourselves.
In this way, our relationship with the animal
can and should be respectful,
ensuring affection, tenderness, listening
to the birds, using animals for company,
the guide dog ... being able to dispose
of the relationship with animals, in a very
ecological interaction, with deep
respect for him and for ourselves,
without transforming them into victims of our
inhumanity and without placing them in a position,
that later the process is such a
humanization that we have
difficulty respecting its limits , because the
animal, dogs, for example, stopped being in the
gardens, in the backyard, circulating
freely in the house for today to appear in the
beds, sometimes in the service, in quotes,
of a conflict that conjugality experiences.
So, let's love animals, respecting them!
