Youtube daily report Oct 23 2018

Hola, soy Zigor Samaniego ilustrador 3D

especializado en diseñar personajes.

Llevo años creando personajes que subo mis redes sociales, son mi escaparate y

con ellos consigo trabajo comercial de todo tipo. He diseñado personajes para

agradable creando personajes.

10 Amazing Nouns to Help You Sound Smarter - Duration: 10:54.

- If you would like to sound smarter and be smarter

then this lesson is for you, because I'm going to tell you

ten nouns to help you do just that.

- Welcome to today's lesson, which is a vocabulary lesson.

Many of you out there have said you would like to learn

more advanced vocabulary words

and that's what these ten nouns are.

They're not only gonna help you sound smarter,

but they're going to help you more accurately express

your thoughts, opinions, and ideas.

They also happen to be ten of my favorite nouns.

So, as I go over these nouns, I'm gonna give you

the pronunciation, tell you the meaning, as well as

talk to you about how they're used in context.

So, let's just get this show on the road.

The first noun is this one, right here:

"quid pro quo," and it is three words,

each word is only one syllable, and if you're saying

it together, the stress is kinda on that first word

and that last word.

Quid pro quo.

And what this means is, it is something that is given,

or even taken in return for something else.

So it's kind of like you're doing a favor for someone

in exchange for something else, and that would be

considered quid pro quo.

Often, we hear this when talking about politics.

Somebody gives a politician money, and then that politician

does something in return for them, and they would

refer to it as quid pro quo.

- Quid pro quo, Mr. Powers.

- I need some quid pro quo from you.

- Quid pro quo.

I tell you things, you tell me things.

- Maybe you're negotiating with somebody, and you're like

"you know, I'm gonna need a little quid pro quo,

if I do whatever favor it is for you."

If you want us to donate to your campaign,

we'll need some quid pro quo.

The next noun, which is one of my favorites, is "catch-22."

This is two words, it's a compound noun.

The word catch is just one syllable,

and then 22 is three syllables,

and the stress is on that final syllable.

Catch-22.

The word comes from a famous book by Joseph Heller,

which is titled "Catch-22," and the meaning of a catch-22,

see if you can follow me, is, it is, a problem

that cannot be solved because the solution to the problem

is inherent in the problem itself.

Now, you may be thinking

"what the heck are you talking about?"

And it's often referred to situations where, again,

you can't solve the problem, because

the solution is within the problem itself,

and it's just like this circular loop.

So, this is a great noun to describe this type of situation,

and, again, it's just like a stand-alone statement.

- And when you are tough, they resent you,

and when you are cool, they walk all over you.

- Catch-22.

- There's no unspoken thing.

- Well, it's a catch-22, because

if you said then it would be spoken.

- Part of their parole is that

they're required to have a job.

The catch-22 of it is not that many

people are that excited to hire a felon.

- We don't really use this noun with any adjectives,

it's just really that stand-alone statement,

and you would describe something,

and say it's a catch-22.

Next is "epitome," and this noun has four syllables,

and the stress is on that second syllable.

Epitome.

This is a word that, when you see it,

many times people may mispronounce it because

the third syllable has that schwa,

and the last syllable is that long e.

Epitome.

Epitome.

And what it means is a person or thing that is

typical of a class or a group as a whole.

Something that possesses, to the highest degree,

what this whole group is all about.

And, therefore, we say that something

is the epitome of something else.

Kind of giving an example, saying that this thing

best represents this whole group.

It's the epitome of something.

Interactive English is the epitome

of English-teaching excellence.

And if you agree with that statement,

then go ahead and hit that like button down below.

It's kind of like a quid pro quo,

I teach you new nouns, you hit that like button,

it's a fair exchange.

Another great noun is dichotomy.

This word has four syllables, and the

stress is on that second syllable.

Dichotomy.

And that third syllable has that schwa, that uh sound.

Dichotomy.

What it means is the division or contrast between

two things that are represented as being

opposed or entirely different.

So, let me give you a couple examples of a dichotomy.

You could have science and religion.

Two things that you can compare,

and they're kind of opposed to each other in some ways.

Also, city life and country life.

Completely different, but we can still compare them.

And, when using this noun, you

say the two things that you're comparing.

- Dichotomy of good and evil.

- The tired dichotomy of jock, artist.

- Often we use it with the preposition between.

You talk about the dichotomy between two things.

For example, we could say: we're studying the dichotomy

between economic development and environmental protection.

The next noun is "myriad."

This word has three syllables,

and the stress is on that first syllable.

That "m" "y" "r" sounds like a "meer."

Myriad.

And a myriad is a very great, or,

indefinitely great, number of things.

Often is can be used as a synonym for various.

You talk about a myriad of something.

There's a lot of variety, there's

a great number of these things.

There's a myriad.

There is a myriad of trees in the forest.

The next noun is "credence."

This word has two syllables, and

the stress is on that first syllable.

Credence.

And what it means is the belief

as to the truth of something.

That, you're kind of, that there's a belief,

and it's showing that that belief is true.

- [Narrator] I never gave these stories much credence.

- He's a criminal and a terrorist,

people aren't gonna give him credence.

- And, though we give them no credence at all, Larry.

- And often you may find this noun with the verb "give."

Something gives a belief credence.

It makes it seem a little more true.

For example, the email they discovered gave

credence to his unethical behavior.

Next is "malaise."

This word has two syllables, and

the stress is on that second syllable.

Malaise.

And this is not a great noun.

The reason I say this is because its meaning is

a vague feeling of physical discomfort,

or uneasiness as an early sign of an illness.

So, if somebody is just starting to feel ill,

then it's very possible that they might experience malaise.

I experiences bad headaches and malaise

before deciding to go to the doctor.

The next noun is "sycophant," and

this noun has three syllables,

and the stress is on that first syllable.

The spelling may throw people off to the pronunciation,

but that "s" "y" "c" is just pronounced "sic."

Sycophant.

And the meaning of a sycophant is

a person that tries to gain attention

by flattering wealthy or influential people.

So, this is not a good noun, you

don't want somebody to call you a sycophant,

because it basically means you're

sucking up to somebody else for no real reason,

it's pathetic, yeah, it's not good.

Some sycophants in the media refuse to

acknowledge the political corruption.

Another great noun, which is another one of my favorites,

is a "dilettante," and this word has three syllables,

and there's kinda like a stress on

that first and last syllable.

Dilettante.

The reason I say it's one of my favorites is because

I guess, you know, I could be considered a dilettante.

Many of us could be considered dilettantes, because

its meaning is a person that cultivates and interest

in something without really learning in-depth information.

And, I think this just happens with people all the time.

We become interested in a topic,

and we learn a little bit about it,

so that we can converse with our friends,

and have discussions, but we have difficulty really

debating this topic with facts and information,

because we just don't know enough.

- They will remain dilettantes

in war, and tourists in Vietnam.

- What's your point?

- Your knowledge is a mile wide and an inch deep.

You know what that makes you?

A dilettante.

- But if somebody calls you a dilettante,

then it's probably not in a good sense,

because they're probably referring to you saying that,

"well, you're a person that you think you know a lot,

but you really don't."

You wanna think she knows a lot about health and nutrition,

but she's really a dilettante.

The next noun is "zenith."

Has two syllables, and the stress is on the first syllable.

Zenith.

And, when talking about the zenith, you are talking about

the top, the peak, the highest point, or state,

of something, or someone's condition.

So, if you are at the top, the highest point,

then you are at the zenith.

It basically implies that you're not going to go any higher,

so, it's like saying you've reached the top,

you're not gonna go any higher,

and things are just going to start going downhill from here.

His athletic career has reached its zenith.

So, I hope some of these nouns were new for you,

and now that you've learned them,

you can go out and practice using them,

so that you can improve your overall English fluency.

But, if you really want to improve your English fluency,

I highly recommend you check out our secret lesson.

I've linked it in the description below.

It's so secret, we're gonna email it to you.

If you enjoyed this lesson, hit that like button.

You know, that quid pro quo we have going on?

And, as always, thank you so much for watching,

and I'll see you next time.

Halloween Hero Hound Costume - Duration: 3:45.

Now we're going to make this really cute puppy costume.

So, I'm going to start with a piece of fabric or felt.

I'm using orange felt here.

And what I want to do is wrap it around

to make it the right size for my puppy

in order to tie it off.

And then I'm going to cut my triangle.

And then what I'm going to do

is I'm going to fold my triangle in half

so that I know that when I place the things on it,

it's going to be even.

So, the first thing that I'm going to do,

I've already cut one H,

and now I'm going to cut another one

from our Bowdabra Rhinestone Mesh.

And now I have my H.

So then, I could use a glue gun,

right now I'm just going to use my Zots,

and I just put that on here

and put this H right there,

which is why I put the fold.

Then I'm going to turn it over,

take another glue dot, but again,

you could use a fabric adhesive or a glue gun.

And put this, make sure it's at the same--

at the same point as my other one.

So let's look on both sides there.

So, here we go.

And put my H here.

So now, I have my "HH" for Halloween Hero.

Now I'm going to take my Mini Bowdabra,

and I have my Bowdabra Bow Wire already cut and folded in half,

and I'm going to just lay it into my Mini Bowdabra

and just tuck the ends underneath.

Then what I'm going to do is take this glittered sheer ribbon

and I'm going to fold it in half

and find the center.

And I'm going to put it wrong side down

into my Mini Bowdabra.

Then I'm going to circle this back over here

and again, the wrong side is down.

Then I'm going to take this piece

and I'm going to make an X,

bring it through,

and scrunch that down in too.

Again, the wrong side is down.

And then I'm going to take this loop, the bottom loop,

and just scrunch it down in the middle.

And then I'm going to do exactly the same thing with this.

So, it's a little pinwheel bow.

So, it's very simple,

just like you would make the hairbow.

And I'll just scrunch this down.

Then I have this cute little feather

that I'm going to lay into my bow,

and these cute little corker ribbons.

Then I'm going to take my Bowdabra Bow Wire,

pull it through my slipknot,

hold my bow while it's still tight in the Bowdabra,

pull it out,

separate the ends,

bring it around to the back.

Now I'm going to take my Hero Hound,

and again, I'm using a glue dot,

but you could use a glue gun or use a fabric adhesive.

And then you have this adorable little Hero Hound costume.

Please do me a favor and click the Subscribe button below,

and also, like us at Bowdabra on Facebook.

Shirdi Baba Samadhi Day and Dattatreya Birthday Celebration - Duration: 7:03.

First, let's look at a very simple definition of miracles.

It is some event or happening for which there is rational explanation, which is often a

very positive thing, not a negative thing.

Usually it is in the domain of God and religion.

We have killed miracles by our own, too much dependence on science and technology, which

are based on rationality.

Everybody is a victim to that, even the most spiritual person is a victim.

Now, I am at a crossroads in my life.

The two personalities, Dattatreya and Shirdi Baba, they influenced me in a very, very powerful

way, so that I used to even have a headband Shirdi Sai Baba used to use.

I don't know why I did that, but I did.

Now they are coming back to me, so I again began to do some research on them and their

miracles, and then their association with me and the claim that I had been Dattatreya

and had been Shirdi Baba.

But I'm just in a very objective way, trying to look at the benefits of these personalities.

Dattatreya is a Guru who had the power of Creator, the Sustainer and the Destroyer,

Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

So he was the ultimate Guru.

Shirdi Sai Baba, who I think passed away in 1918, he is now coming back with a tremendous

amount of power.

He was just a man of miracles.

I am more attracted to the miracles because what the world needs today is a quick fix,

especially for those who have no resources, no skills, no substantial education or backup

from people.

They depend on miracles more than the rich people or the educated people.

So the miracle is something that is very fast, quick, and for which there is no explanation

but changes things around your life and then your problem is solved.

Why not go back to that and then embrace it and experiment with it?

That is where I am now.

These two personalities, Dattatreya and Shirdi Baba are both now coming back to me with tremendous

amount of irresistible force.

I went to the website and then saw a number of miracles happening in the Shirdi Baba temples.

Now there is something that I cannot resist.

Last night, a very powerful Agastya channel told me that Shirdi Sai Baba will be known

all over the world among Westerners through me.

It was an important piece of information.

And in that work he said that Dattatreya's birthday is very important for you.

That is coming on the full moon on the twenty second of October.

I have been identified as Dattatreya and Shirdi Baba a few years ago which I voluntarily gave

up.

Now Dattatreya, Shirdi Baba are forcefully coming back and doing a great deal of work,

particularly miracles.

So I decided to embrace those identities.

I decided that we can make available to you an opportunity to connect with Dattatreya

and Shirdi Baba.

Something felt right in me to have a big event for Dattatreya, a very big fire lab invoking

him in a grand way.

He also only does miracles.

Teaching is not important.

Teaching is just a waste of time.

So that's something that I have decided to do in India.

It's going to be a grand, grand ceremony.

There's going to be a fire ritual for both Dattatreya and Shirdi Sai Baba.

I want people to pray for miracles.

I am very grateful that I have been blessed with many things in my life, primarily from

the Divine.

God Bless.

Tulip Mania I: When a single tulip was worth more than a house - Duration: 6:50.

Today, you can buy several tulips for a couple of dollars.

In 1637, you could buy every house on your street, for a couple of tulips.

The year is 1637, right in the middle of the Dutch Golden Age.

This is the era of names such as Rembrandt, Christiaan Huygens, and Johannes Vermeer.

And even though it was in a golden age, The Dutch Republic was a new country founded only

half a century ago, when it revolted against the Spanish Empire and started the 80 years'

war.

This golden age was spurred in large part due to The Dutch Republic's invention of early

capitalism.

And it is here, in Amsterdam, that the first company is founded, the first stock exchange

created, and as we will see over the course of this series... it's the place where the

first financial bubble burst.

This, is the story of Tulip Mania!

But what even is a financial bubble?

For us economics nerds this is easy to understand.

For the rest of us, here is a short example: Let's say you have a bitcoin.

And that bitcoin costed 100 dollars and you sell it for 150 dollars, earning you a profit

of 50 dollars.

That evening you tell your friends you just made 50 dollars with bitcoin.

Your friends want the same profit so they buy a bunch of bitcoins hoping to sell it

later at a higher price.

A week later they sell each bitcoin for 200 dollars.

And then new people come to buy bitcoin, hearing of all this profit being made.

Over time, more and more people come in.

Each person is betting they will be able to sell at a higher price to the next person.

But eventually you run out of buyers and the price goes down.

It crashes.

This is an economic bubble.

And like all bubbles: eventually they must burst.

Tulips originally came from Persia and traveled via the Ottoman trade to western Europe in

the 16th century.

Tulips come in a variety of colour and they rapidly became prized above all other flowers.

The Dutch Republic saw the rise of a new middle class and these merchant and traders were

willing to pay large sums of money for the newest, the latest, the most spectacularly-coloured

tulips.

Each year new varieties were cultivated.

In particular there was one type of tulip that was prized above all other tulips.

This tulip had darker coloured stripes and 'flames' on a lighter background.

They did not get this colour due to the flower's genetics, but because of a virus.

But this was the early 17th century and the field of genetics wouldn't exist for another

200 years.

This meant that as a tulip grower, you could never be sure whether you had an ordinary

tulip or an extremely valuable "flaming" tulip.

This made tulips a risky investments.

Tulip traders usually had their own private garden where they would grow them, but they

were not professional tulip traders.

As far as I could find out, none of them were.

They all had a day job and tulip growing and trading was a side business for them, a hobby.

These men belonged to a new middle class which was just forming in the Dutch Republic thanks

to the Dutch East India Company.

But just because tulips were a hobby, didn't mean they were amateurs.

In fact, these men knew a lot about this plant and growing the best one was a serious hobby,

not just a casual one.

And by the 1620s a beautiful new flower had emerged: the Semper Augustus.

The Semper Augustus... god don't you just love that name...

Anyway, the Semper Augustus was owned by one man.

And he was crafty.

He knew that if he sold the offspring of this tulip then it was only a matter of time before

his customers would grow more of them and then he would have competitors.

So he did what most companies would do in his situation: create a monopoly, meaning

he was the only one who was able to sell the Semper Augustus.

How did he do it?

Well, he created a contract with very specific terms.

first, you weren't allowed to sell your tulip bulb again without the express permission

of the owner and secondly, you weren't allowed to sell any of the offspring from the tulip

bulb either.

As you might imagine, many traders did not always honour this contract.

And many an angry merchant went to the Dutch notary office to file an official complaint.

Records of these complaints can still be found in the archives of many Dutch cities to this

day.

And it is through these records that we know how much tulips were worth during that time.

Even Though not all merchants honoured the deal, most of them did.

This way, he was assured that he could control how many of his Semper Augustus were being

sold and as a result, the price went up.

By 1623 the price for a single Semper Augustus tulip bulb was worth 1000 Guilders.

By the end of 1625, that price has risen to 3000 Guilders.

To put this into perspective, a skilled artisan such as a carpenter would earn about 300 Guilders

per YEAR . So that meant that by 1625, a carpenter would have to work 10 whole years, not spend

any of that money on food or a house or anything else. and then, after 10 years, he would finally

be able to take all his money to a tulip trader and buy... a single bulb.

And that's without the price going up any further than it already did.

An average carpenter in The Netherlands today earns about 30.000 Euro per year, meaning

this bulb would cost you about 300.000 Euro...

300.000 Euro.

What?

Because my audience comes from a variety of countries, here is how much is would cost

in some other popular countries with viewer.

And this is where we will leave it for today…

At TEN times average annual wages.

Come back next time, as the prices will get even higher as more people join the tulip

trade.

We Did Pilates Like Katrina Kaif For 30 Days | BuzzFeed India - Duration: 7:32.

Imagine if someone told you to lift dumbbells,

but just do it really slowly.

While breathing.

My name is Arundhati

and my relationship with the gym is a joke.

Hi! I'm Sonia and

it's only in the past year that I have just started enjoying working out a little more than usual.

Katrina Kaif is really good-looking.

By looking at her I can only sense that she works out a lot,

because she used to get fit-shamed a lot

when she entered the industry, she was more muscular than

other actresses or, like, she looked way fitter.

I think she does everything, like, I think out of twenty-four hours, for ten hours she works out.

I am expecting my body to hurt every single day for the next thirty days.

Katrina works out a lot. I don't know if I'll be able to do it.

Hey guys, I am Yasmin Karachiwala.

I've been in the fitness space for the last 26 years.

Yea that is how old I am. Good one.

You are going to be training with me for the next thirty days.

Your profile includes Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone.

What kind of workout does each one do and especially

Katrina Kaif who has been known for being so fit.

So we make short-term goals, which is what I do with all of my celebs.

Katrina does everything.

She'll do crazy functional training, she'll do crazy cardio, and then she'll do crazy amounts of Pilates.

It just depends where she is in her body.

Pilates looks very intimidating because there are so many machines that look very simple but suddenly someone is upside down on it.

In layman's terms, Pilates is a combination of strength training and yoga.

You are working on flexibility and strength at the same time.

So guys, after all your questions, are you ready?

I guess. Yea. Kind of.

Come on, let's start then.

This is one of my favourite machines.

It really makes you aware of your alignment.

Don't move the elbows and five, and bend, last one, and bend.

Ok. So that was your warm-up.

Elbows open, five, you've to use your obliques. Six, come on, come on, seven.

Take your hands in front.

Those are your legs.

Oh...sorry.

Sonia, are you ok?

We are still alive.

And you're going to take something and then throw it. Go, go, go Arundhati, without smiling.

And pull, and bring it with you, extending.

Four more and let's go.

That's taking your butt with you.

And exhale. Come back to the center.

Thank you. Nice meeting you, Yasmin.

It's day one. It's 7 a.m. and guess where we are?

This is our workout for day one.

Just got done with day one and it wasn't bad at all. It was really fun.

Can have some water.

I do need water.

Thank you to my competitor, Sonia. Did you like the class?

We are not competing.

We are. I'm winning.

Wow, looks like we are the only ones who are excited about working out.

Open, stabilise your pelvis, close.

Together, go down.

Sonia, you can raise your leg a bit.

When it was on the mat for two-three days, initial days,

my energy levels were like ok. I'm doing it because I committed to it.

The exercises were super basic.

It felt like a regular yoga session, but lighter.

For the past two days I've been finding this really easy and was able to do everything.

Today, though, was intense.

We've not moved like this.

Inhale. Inhale up, circle.

We started doing exercises on the reformer, which is my favourite machine of all time.

The reformer is like, this L-shaped thing.

We lie down over here and we just go up-down, up-down, horizontally, like this.

Which is what looks cool in all these Pilates videos.

So today we have an instrument called the chair and it looks nothing like a chair.

What do you think, Aru?

We'll have fun.

There were some parts of our muscles which were getting suddenly activated

but we wouldn't sweat at the end of the workout. It didn't feel like we had worked out at all.

After any exercise I'm like, extremely high, I'm running around.

I'm high on energy, but after this, I would go home, take a nap, get ready, and come to work.

We are halfway there. Six classes done, six to go.

It's getting more intense and more fun. I'm starting to like it even more now.

The second half of the month was when things started getting more intense.

Everything we did on the mat, even though it was on the mat, it wasn't similar to yoga. I wasn't used to it.

There were sudden muscles in my thighs that I didn't know existed.

It is called a "wonder chair" and we did exercises on that and everything on the chair was difficult

We were back on the reformer today and I really enjoy it so much.

I was just, like, relaxed.

It is the best form of exercise. It is the best machine.

We are so used to like, hearing your instructor say that "Sit straight" or "Don't move your pelvis", "Tuck down your tail bone."

That you kinda start using it in your real life also,

like, while at work also, as soon as I realise oh I'm slouching, I would be like ok.

At some points I was like, holy shit, I didn't know my inner thighs could hurt that much.

Suddenly I realised I was exercising muscles that I usually don't.

Just when you start enjoying something, life takes it away from you.

So now I'm like, what will I do after Pilates? What is the purpose of my life?

This was an analogy I used to describe Pilates to a friend the other day.

Where I said, imagine if someone told you to lift dumbbells but just do it really slowly.

While breathing.

Today is our last class and I feel like crying.

The physical transformation was my strength.

My core strength improved.

We were told that Katrina has been doing Pilates for years.

When we see her Instagram workouts and we see her being like, super chill and, like, graceful on the reformer.

Whereas when you're there you're just shaking. Hoping you don't lose your balance.

It's not achievable unless you have the kind of time, the kind of resources, and

the kind of dedicated trainers that she has at her disposal.

You know, if you want to work out like Katrina Kaif, you have to probably be Katrina Kaif.

First of all, today we did the most difficult exercise.

It looked so easy, so effortless, but I just couldn't do it.

There's a reason Katrina is Katrina.

Let's be real, there is no way I could've afforded Pilates on my own.

I would definitely do Pilates again if I have the resources, if I have the chance, if I'm able to afford it.

It's completely different from a gym. Way more fun, way more intense.

Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho Chelsea response proved one thing - pundit - Duration: 2:54.

That's the view of former Premier League striker, and current pundit, Ian Wright

Manchester United were beating Chelsea 2-1 going into stoppage time before Ross Barkley equalised for the Blues

Chelsea coach Ianni taunted Mourinho as he ran past the Portuguese boss celebrating

Mourinho reacted angrily, with a fracas ensuing though the former Chelsea boss escaped punishment from the FA

A draw at Stamford Bridge eased the pressure on Jose Mourinho, who has been under increasing scrutiny this season

Many were claiming the manager looked uninterested at Old Trafford and that he had lost the players in the dressing room

But Wright believes Mourinho's reaction in London at the weekend showed how much it really cares

"When he raced from the dugout to try to get hold of Ianni, it was the action of a man for whom it mattered so much," Wright wrote in his column for The Sun

"It was the action of a man who cares. And to those United supporters, that is crucial

"They want to see their heroes showing as much passion as they do. "They want to see the same joy and pain they feel in 90 minutes

"Jose did exactly that. "And I'm delighted to see fortune and feelings starting to change in The Special One's favour a little

" Fellow pundit Don Hutchison agrees with Wright. "I love how we've got emotion and I like this from Jose," Hutchison said

"I know in the modern world you can't be getting off your seat and reacting but on a human level, his team is winning 2-1 at his former club where his fans are on the case, I don't mind that reaction

"I know when kids are watching, you've got to say and do the right thing. "But on a human level, he's been abused twice, inches away from his face

Of course you're going to react."

Let's Learn English in the Forest in the Fall (Autumn) | English Video with Subtitles - Duration: 7:13.

Hi Bob the Canadian here.

Let's learn English in the Forest!

Hey welcome to this video.

If this is your first time here don't forget to click the subscribe button below, it's

the red button down there, and if at some point during this video you could give me

a thumbs up, that would be awesome.

Well hey welcome to this video, it is kind of fun to be out here in nature today.

We're gonna talk about the season of Fall and we're gonna talk about it out here in

the forest.

In Canada we have four seasons.

We have Winter when the snow flies and it's really really cold.

We have Spring when everything starts to grow and the trees get leaves back on them again.

We have Summer when everything grows like crazy, that means it grows a lot!

And it's really really hot.

And we have Fall or Autumn.

It has two names in English.

Generally we use the term, "Fall" and I think "Fall" became popular because in the, in the

Fall leaves fall off the trees.

So you'll see in the path behind me there's just all kinds of leaves that have fallen

from the trees.

In the Fall trees turn from their normal green colour to brown, red, orange, yellow, and

all the shades in between and it's really a beautiful season to be outside.

So in English we have three words to describe the forest.

We have, "forest".

We have, "woods".

And we have, "bush".

In my area of Ontario, Canada we generally use the term, "bush".

If I was to say to someone, "I'm going out to the forest to go for a walk."

They might look at me funny, because we don't use the word, "forest" a lot in this area.

But if I said, "I'm going out to the bush to go for a walk."

They would understand what I'm talking about.

I thought I'd stop for a minute and tell you why we have a maple leaf on our flag, why

the flag of Canada has a maple leaf.

It's because we have maple trees and maple leaves everywhere.

On the ground around me there's just all these nice red maple leaves that have fallen off

a tree.

So because there's so many maple trees we decided to use the maple leaf, which is the

leaf from the maple tree on our flag.

So, ….. Now you know!

So you can see behind me that a lot of leaves fall off the trees in the Fall.

If we were in town, if we were in the city, we would have to rake these leaves up into

a pile and often people rake leaves into a pile and then their kids jump into the pile

for fun.

It's a pretty common thing for young Canadian kids to do.

So there's three main reasons why you might come out to the woods, or the forest.

You might be someone who is a avid hunter.

That's someone who really likes hunting for animals, maybe with a bow and arrow.

It's possible that you just like to go on a hike or a nature walk.

And it's also possible that you're coming out to the forest to cut down trees for firewood.

In Canada we still have a lot of people that use wood to heat their houses in the winter.

So it's pretty common to come out to the forest or the woods to cut down trees for firewood.

Usually when you do that you have a chainsaw.

I'll put a picture up here of a chainsaw.

And you have what we call a log splitter in order to split the pieces of wood into firewood,

and then that firewood is used in a wood burning stove to heat their home.

So there's really two kinds of trees that you'll find in the forest.

There's deciduous trees.

Those are trees where the leaves turn colour and they fall off in the Autumn or Fall.

Deciduous trees are trees like, maple, or oak, or poplar.

There's also coniferous trees.

Coniferous trees are trees that have needles instead of leaves, and they stay green year

round.

The needles don't fall off in the winter.

A few examples of coniferous trees are trees like spruce, or pine, or cedar.

So I'm in a clearing right now.

A clearing is an area where there's no trees, and I thought this would be a good time to

go over the parts of the tree.

The part of the tree that's underground, way down there underground, is called the roots.

This right here, this right here is called the trunk.

And the, the skin of the trunk is called the bark.

Up there you have a branch, and if we look even higher you'll see some twigs, which are

small branches, and you'll see the leaves.

So there's also the parts of the tree that we refer to after it has been cut down or

after it has died.

This is a stick.

This is a log.

Logs are generally used to make lumber to build houses.

And sticks are used for, well, just about everything including roasting marshmallows

on a fire, or maybe hot dogs.

So after a tree gets cut down the part of the tree that's left we call a tree stump.

So this is a tree stump from a tree that was cut down, probably with a chainsaw, and there's

another one over here where we have a tree stump and someone did a carving on the top.

A cute little bear.

So this is a tree stump.

This is a wood carving.

So there's a variety of animals that you'll find in the forest.

You'll obviously find birds.

I don't know if you can hear these birds up in the these trees here.

They're being pretty loud.

But generally in this part of Ontario all we really see are maybe the odd squirrel,

or maybe the odd chipmunk.

There's also a few raccoons, but generally we don't see bigger animals like bears.

Thank goodness.

But there is some deer.

From time to time we will see deer.

I'm not sure if you can hear it right now, but it's really nice in the Fall because the

leaves rustle as the wind blows through them.

In English we say, "rustling" when two things kind of rub together in the wind.

I'll just stop talking for a minute and we can listen to the rustling of the leaves.

Hopefully you could hear it.

Well hey that was fun.

Thank you so much for coming to the forest with me today.

I hope this video helped you learn some English words and phrases that you would use to describe

the forest.

I highly recommend you check out our secret lesson.

and I'll see you next time.
