hi everyone I'm Whitney and this week it is all about the Halloween costumes here
on Whitney sews I am going to be sharing the fabric haul as well as how the
finished costumes turned out for my two daughters and a pattern review for
simplicity 1035 so let's get right into everything that we have to talk about
today so my oldest Peyton who is almost 4 wanted to be Batman-Girl
that's with a hyphen and she wanted her costume to have the Batman
logo and a skirt and so when I came across this pattern by simplicity she
said it was exactly what she wanted and then she convinced my younger daughter
Skyler that she should be Wonder Woman so I went ahead and picked this pattern
up when Hobby Lobby ran their 99 cent pattern sale then I referred to all the
information on the back of the envelope to know exactly how much I needed to get
of each fabric if you want to know more about pattern reading and all of that I
do have a playlist on different things you need to know about working with
sewing patterns and I'll have that playlist linked down below in the
description box but I wrote down everything I needed 4 measurements and
then I headed to Joanns to pick up all the fabrics while they were running some
good sales and I also had some coupons to use so here is the haul video that I
filmed right after I picked up all the different fabrics from Joanns
fabrics I made a big list of them then I went through my stash and pulled out
what I already had available that should work and then I hid the fabric store to
pick up everything else so I'm going to show you everything today I think I
would start with the items that I already had on hand and then I will show
the items that I purchased most importantly for the Batman-girl costume
is a black knit this is just a really basic black like t-shirt knit and this
fabric was sent to me recently from a viewer so that is absolutely wonderful
this would be the base of the Batman dress also for the Batman costume is a
black fabric for the Cape on the pattern they used black satin but
I have this black woven fabric I am NOT certain what it is but there is plenty
of it here this was also sent by a viewer the same viewer and I'm going to
be using it for the Batman cape from the same lady who sent those I needed a blue
fabric for the Wonder Woman cape the pattern used a bright blue satin but I
have a slightly darker blue like taffeta kind of fabric and that is good enough
for me so I'm going to use that and then I also needed a red broad cloth for
lining some of the items and I have this red fabric already in my stash that was
a remnant that I picked up a couple years ago those are all items for my
stash that I'm going to be able to use which is wonderful because that is a few
yards of fabric that I did not need to go out and purchase so then I did go out
and purchase the rest of the materials so for Batman I needed a yellow knit
fabric and I found this one it is really quite thin unfortunately but I think
it's going to work I went ahead and bought a little extra because Jeremiah
has a costume he's working on as well that needed some yellow knit so I went
ahead and got a couple yards of that then for lining some of the pieces I
needed a yellow broadcloth and here in person they don't look the same color at
all in the store they matched really well so I don't know if it's just my
lighting here or what but I mean it's close enough but like I said in the
store it looks like a perfect match so then for the top of the Wonder Woman
costume I needed a red knit so I picked that one up this is also a pretty thin
knit so I hope that works out I'm kind of wondering if I should have just like
bought a red t-shirt or something but hopefully this will work out I have not
really done much with knit in a long time so not looking forward to sewing
with knit but I'm sure it will be fine for the skirt
part of the Wonder Woman costume I found this it is absolutely perfect
at first I could not find like I went around and run around around around the
store looking for anything that was blue with white stars or blue with red stars
or blue with silver stars just anything with large stars on it I didn't care
what kind of fabric it was I was gonna make it work I even asked the employees
at Joanns if they had blue fabric with stars and they said that they had to
damage all of it like claim it as damaged and send it back because the
stars were coming off so I was just like oh no what am I gonna do because it's a
little bit of a drive to Joanns for me and I did not want to go back and not
when I have to order online and then right I was about to leave I rounded the
fabric department like a far corner of it one more time and when you know there
was a bolt of fabric there and I don't even know if it's the same brand that
they had told me they had like had to send back or what I don't know I was
just happy to have found it and that I did not have to drive back to the store
because like I said it's a ways and I had I did all my fabric shopping on
Sunday so I could leave the kids home with Jeremiah because I did not want to
have to be doing all this fabric shopping with the kids with me so yeah
so happy to have found this and then the last thing I needed was the stretchy
gold fabric for the bracelets and all of that so I found this and this was the
only one that was not on sale so I did use a sixty percent off coupon on it
which was awesome hopefully making these costumes goes well so I got all those
fabrics washed up and I was ready to start making the costumes so I wanted to
start with the Batman costume so I cut out all of the pieces that I needed out
of the black knit I followed the pattern cutting layout
exactly as it was shown it's kind of interesting that the
pattern showed that the fabric needed to be unfolded from the way that it came
off the bolt and then refolded the other direction so these selvages were at
opposite ends instead of being lined up like normal but I figured the pattern
company knew best they made the pattern they should know
what layout would work best and I don't work with knits that often so I just
went with it and did everything the way that they showed the only change that I
made at that time was I did go ahead and cut the skirt longer because Peyton is
very tall for her age she is only three but she is about the size in height of
about a five-year-old but she is still very skinny so I cut the smallest size
out of the pattern and it should have actually been just a little bit big on
her because the measurements are just a hair larger than she is so I got the top
sewn together and I immediately knew there was a problem here is how it looks
you may not be able to tell on camera but this is ridiculously tiny so I put
it on Peyton to try it on her and it was skin tight and very short and I noticed
right then that the stretch is going up and down that's not correct
the stretch should be going around your body but the pattern layouts told me to
cut my pieces in such a way that the stretch is going up and down so like I
said I don't work with knits that often so I just laid everything the direction
the pattern layout had told me and I just went with it but basically
everything I cut out of this black knit fabric is essentially unusable because
this is not correct and it was skin tight on her so even accounting for the
stretch going in the wrong direction the measurements were still off on this
pattern if anything it should have been a little bit too big on her even with
the stretch going the wrong way it was still
much tighter than it should have been so the measurements on the pattern were not
correct so at this point I was very frustrated
I had just wasted a ton of fabric while following the directions to a T
so to say I was frustrated is an understatement I was incredibly
disappointed because simplicity is actually my favorite pattern company out
of all the commercial pattern companies that are out there but they definitely
let me down on this pattern the measurements are not correct and the
cutting lamp is not correct that is a huge problem when you are sewing any
sort of clothing but especially knit clothing when the direction of the
stretch is so important I ended up setting this pattern to the side and
setting everything to the side for about two weeks before I got over the
frustration and was able to get back to working on these costumes so what I
ended up doing was going to Walmart and buying long sleeve t-shirts a black one
for Peyton and a red one for Skyler that's what I used for the top of the
dress and then I added all the embellishments and the skirts and
everything to the already made shirt because I did not want to deal with
making another top to the costume I had already cut the pattern down to that
smallest size and I was not about to go out and buy another copy of the pattern
thankfully I was able to salvage the skirts that I already cut out of the
black knit if you remember I did cut it quite a bit longer than the size called
for so I was able to cut the waist bigger which did shorten it but it was
still usable in the end so I'm very thankful that I did not have to go out
and buy more black fabric for that so I did end up using the simplicity pattern
pieces to create the logo for the dress and for the belt as well as the arm
cuffs and the cape on the Batman costume by this point I did not even consider
making the mask or the boot covers because I had
no idea how they would turn out based on how the rest of the pattern had already
failed me up to that point then for Skyler I did not even use the skirt
pattern piece I just cut a simple circle skirt out of my star fabric that I knew
it fit her waist size then I did I used part of the skirt print on the edges of
the cape because it was just much easier to topstitch a little bit on there and
then I used the pattern pieces for the Wonder Woman logo because and the belt
the headband and the cape but really most of those pieces are things that I
could have easily patterned for myself so really I was not relying on this
pattern very much by this point another really big problem that I have with this
pattern is each element of the costume calls for a very large amount of fabric
so each piece calls for for the smallest size between three quarters of a yard to
a yard of fabric or each thing so for the cape you need to guard a fabric for
the like fabric for the skirt you need to guard a fabric for the boot covers
you need a yard of fabric for the lining you need a yard of fabric and there was
a lot of waste if you look at the pattern layout they use a very small
amount of the fabric and there's a ton of waste so for instance the boot covers
they used a knit fabric for the outside and a broad cloth for the lining instead
they could have easily used the same fabric for the outer and lining and
there would have been a lot less waste so this pattern you have you buy so much
fabric for it and then you have all this extra leftover and the way the cutting
layout is and everything sometimes I think you could have made a lot better
use of the fabric by laying it out differently than how it's shown but
that's something you don't really know until you've started in on the pattern
and you've already bought all your fabrics so now I have a lot of extra
fabric left over in the red and the yellow
and I don't know what I'm gonna use them for and I feel like it was a waste of
money buying some of them but I didn't know until it actually started diving
into the pattern itself and so my overall review on simplicity 1035 is it
is not worth it I only paid 99 cents for this pattern and I feel like that was a
waste like I said earlier you can easily start with a long-sleeve t-shirt add a
circle skirt to it the belt is a really generic shape you could easily cut that
out you can find a cake pattern just about anywhere like the cuff on the
Batman costume is really like the only thing that is a specialized pattern and
then for the logos you could use a picture you found online or even a
coloring book page and just trace it out and cut your logo out from that so as
long as you're not trying to make like the mask because we just use a
store-bought mask that we already had um as long as you're not trying to make
something like that like all of these are very basic costume pieces that can
be made with your own patterns like self drafted patterns or just about any other
costume pattern so if you're considering buying this pattern don't do it it is
not worth it and it like pains me to say that because I really do love simplicity
patterns but in this case it is a fail and most of you know I love owning tons
and tons of sewing patterns by this point I have probably around 400 sewing
patterns and usually I keep all of them even if it's a pattern that I made and I
didn't totally love I keep it anyway most of the time but this one I'm going
to be getting rid of because I don't even want to look at it anymore
I just I'm glad to be done with it and I'm ready to get it out of my collection
so now that we are past the like negative part of this video I do want to
talk about some of the details and things that I added to the costumes to
help improve them so one big thing that I added is a lot of snaps I used snaps
to keep the capes in place I put one side of the snap on the cape and the
other side on the shirt on the inside of the show
I did add a little square of sweatshirts fabric just to make sure that the snap
didn't pull through and make a hole in the shirt when I said it so the capes
snap on as well as the belts before I sewed the lining of the belt to the
outer fabric I added a snap there and also a snap to the shirt right above
where it joins the skirt that way I can snap the belt to the dress and I don't
have to worry about its sliding down or it you know getting off centered or
anything like that the belts also close with a snap in the
back and I made sure to leave a few extra inches on the end of the belt that
way if the kids do grow some and they still want to wear these costumes we can
just add another snap farther out on the belt and it will still work out by
adding just a few little snaps like that I don't have to worry about are their
capes falling off for are the kids uncomfortable because things keeps
moving out of place and all that and instead the kids can run around and have
fun and not have to be you know constantly pulling up their cape or
adjusting different elements of their costume instead they can just be kids
and have fun and it just makes things so much easier I also added a little bit of
stuffing to the cuff details on the Batman costume here on the pattern they
definitely stand up quite a bit but the pattern does not mention any kind of
stiffener or stuffing or anything like that but I knew just when I sewed the
pieces together I could tell right away that they were not going to stand up and
look very good so I added a little bit of stuffing to them not a lot just
enough that they held their shape and it gave it more of a little like a cartoon
look which I really like and it really made a big difference so that was just
something that along the way when I was making the costume I was like you know
what these need a little extra help and stuffing was exactly what did it and
last for the little details that I added to the costumes I wanted to share how I
made the Wonder Woman logo the pattern instructions say to cut the logo out
of gold knit fabric then sew it to the dress using a zig zag stitch and you're
supposed to zigzag all of the black line detailing onto it but I knew that this
would not go well that is just too much stitching in a
small area to not have problems I knew it would bunch up and if I messed up
anything and had to unstitch it there would be holes yeah I just knew it would
not go well so what I did instead it was I used some Pelin wonder under which is
a double sided fusible stabilizer and I used it to fuse some of the golden it to
a piece of red felt and then I cut out the Wonder Woman logo shape and I used a
black paint pen to draw on all of the detailing this worked really well
because I could get the detailing on there exactly how I wanted it and I
wasn't having to worry about a lot of different stitching or the knit fabric
getting all like chewed up looking from all the stitches and the felt gave it a
really good structure so the logo wasn't all flimsy and floppy and everything it
was really nice and structured and then after all of the paint detail and
everything was on there I simply straight stitched it onto the dress
inside of the area that I had colored in and it worked out so well the red felt
gives it just enough of a lift that it has dimension and I think it just turned
out looking so good and much better than it would have if I had just done the
single layer of gold knit as the applique
so even though I had so many issues and frustrations with the pattern itself I
am still very happy with how the costumes turned out and the kids
absolutely love them and that is what's really important in the end they don't
know that I went through so much frustration and all of that and that the
directions were wacky and all that the kids don't know that they just know that
in the end I made costumes that they are so happy with
and I'm that's what made it worth it to me and they actually got to wear their
costumes last Saturday to a Jedi okay see a fundraising event and there was a
kids costume contest Skyler actually came in
second place with her Wonder Woman costume and she was so happy she won a
Star Wars themed bear from build-a-bear so it was really cute the kids have worn
their costumes three or four times total so far and we still have several other
things to wear them to but they've been running in them and jumping and playing
and saying Batman and Wonder Woman and they're just having so much fun and
the costumes are holding up really really well I am so happy with that
because with some cheaper store-bought costumes and things like they'll get a
rip in on right away or they just like you know fall down and they don't stay
up and it's just you know a lot of problems but these costumes I am so
happy that they are holding up really well and they're staying in place and
I'm just really happy with them even though I don't like the pattern I am
happy with the final outcome and that is what matters so I would love to know if
you are making any Halloween costumes for this year and if so did you start
with a sewing pattern and how did that go for you did you have good luck with
it success with it or was it kind of a pattern disaster like mindless I would
love to know so leave a comment down below and I will be back in a few days
with another video and until then happy sewing
