How are your listening skills? Do you feel like you could use some practice?
Because if you do, I have a really really really really really awesome, really fun listening practice.
It's coming up.
What we're going to do is I have prepared two texts for you today,
and I am going to read these texts out loud.
They're not long texts. They're short, but they have a lot of detail.
So I'm going to read them twice, and you have to listen for all the details.
So this is an exercise where you have to really listen and pay attention
And then say it back.
And when you do, I'm going to give you some clues that will help you to remember.
Now, keep in mind that the point of this exercise Is to improve your listening, but also your speaking.
So you really really really have to speak in full sentences.
This will really help your fluency. Are you with me? Are you ready? Are you brave enough?
Ok, so I brought Wes for moral support.
He's going to do the exercise with with you guys.
I'm a little nervous.
Are you sure? Can you handle this?
I'm a little nervous put my listening skills on display like this.
Yeah
Are you guys excited to see how he does?
To see how much I forget?
I'm going to read the text twice and then you're going to have to repeat what I say.
But I will give you some clues to help you. Okay?
Good, good.
Why are your eyes closed?
Hmm? I'm concentrating.
Ok, that was the first time. So do you think you'll remember some of these details? I'm going to read it again.
Okay, so you guys also have to remember. This is very important. You have to pay attention to the details.
I'll say it again
So I feel like Wes is trying to cheat, so I'm just I'm just going to cover this.
Okay, stop.
Got it?
I kind of tuned out for a little bit (LOL)
Did you guys get it? Oh my god, how did you tune out? Should I read it again?
It's okay it's okay, no no no we're gonna go for it.
Did you fall asleep or something?
It wasn't a very exciting story, but...
What? It's super exciting!
It's OK, it's good for listening practice
Okay, so now I'm going to give you some clues
Okay, so you have to repeat this story with as many details as you can and you have to speak in full sentences
And use the clues I'm giving you right here on the screen
Now what I need you to do is pause the video.
Okay? Pause it and say the story with the clues you see. And then you can play it, and then you'll hear Wes say it.
So don't cheat. Say it first, and then we'll listen to Wes say it.
Please
Okay, are you guys ready? Hopefully you should have used those clues and should remember at least 50% of the story, I hope, and
Let's see how Wes does. Are you ready Wes? You think you remember?
I will find out.
Okay, so I'm going to show him the same clues I'm showing you guys. I'm not showing him the story.
Okay, let's see how much he remembers
Let's laugh at him.
Okay, so there's a guy named Steve who...
He is 35 years old. He lives in California
He works at a paper company
in a small office with 12 other people
He goes to lunch and
Listens to jazz, or bachata, merengue or something
I don't think that was in the lesson.
He goes home later after work to see his wife, Maria
and they like to cook Spanish food together,
and then they go walk their dog, Snowball
Yeah, that's pretty good!... except for the bachata & merengue.
I am pretty sure they listen to what jazz and something. Classical music.
Yeah, so some things that you missed I think
Is that he was a manager at a paper company. He likes jazz and classical music.
and bachata.
There's no bachata in here. Just jazz and classical music. So definitely not bachata or merengue, but you got it.
Bachata is much better than classical music.
So hopefully you guys were able to repeat these,
I think was did pretty well.
Let's do another! Let's do another. I'm ready for another!
Are you ready for another?
Ok, so same as last time. I'm going to read a text two times,
and you have to be able to repeat with as many details as possible.
Pause the video, repeat, and then we'll make Wes do it and see how he does.
Are you sleeping?
No, no, I'm very focused right now.
Where do you get these stories?
I wrote it.
I'm trying to picture everything as it's going on.
Obviously I wrote about the cats.
It's obviously my work.
Okay, one more time.
Why are you laughing?
Stop laughing at my story!
Okay, so I don't know why Wes is laughing,
But if you if you guys were listening right now what I need you to do is to pause the video,
look at my clues and try to say as many details as you remember, but please don't forget to speak in full sentences.
Okay, so just say what you remember in full sentences. Follow the clues if you forget some of the details.
And pause the video.
And then unpause it to see what Wes comes up with.
Got it?
Okay, so I hope you remembered some of these
I think this one was a little bit harder than the first one because I snuck in more details in there.
Wes: I thought you said it was going to be easier.
I know, but I was tricking you.
So let's see how Wes does.
Are you guys ready to see how he does?
I'm curious to see how much I remember.
okay. I need those clues where the clues. Oh, yeah here are
okay, so
There is a young girl named Millie.
She is nine years old.
She lives in Boston and goes to a bilingual school.
Her favorite subject is art
because she likes to draw pictures,
and she draws a picture of
these two cats, Socks and Whiskers.
Socks and Mustache.
So socks is a black cat with white paws,
Mustache is brown and black with funny whiskers
Millie
Because this is a little out of order... The subjects that she likes to study history as well
History and science, but she doesn't like math and
in the future she wants to be
a marine biologist.
No, that's not what you remember.
She wants to be a bachata singer?
Again with the bachata! No!
A vet!
You did really well. I think you got all of them right except you didn't mention what kind of school it was.
It was it was a bilingual school. Yeah, but you didn't mention the languages
English and French. You did really well. How did you guys do?
Where'd you come up with Millie? Why Millie?
There was a cartoon...sounds like an older name. I like the name Milly.
Also there was a teleovela I used to watch. And her name was Mili, from Milagros.
Okay, so this was our listening activity. I hope you enjoyed it. I hope you did well
like Wes did here. He did really well, right? We're proud of him. We're proud of Wes. Well, it is in English so...
So if you guys actually did the speaking activity I want you to write the word speaking in the comments.
Let us know if you were talking. Yeah, we need to know. I hope so.
If you enjoyed this lesson, please give us a thumbs up!
That's it for today, that's all I got.
We'll see you next time! Bye!
