So...
Of everything that my grandfather did for me,
I think that going to Real Madrid, as said...
It's priceless, Real Madrid is by far the best team in the world.
But, for everything that he did,
at his life condition,
everything that he did for me to be at Real Madrid today,
there's no comparison.
I think that I'd have...
Playing at Brazilian National Team, at Real Madrid, winning championships
wouldn't pay that back. I think I'd have to...
be born again to repay him, because...
It looks like he did all of this for me
when I was already a professional.
He did it without knowing I'd be a professional, you know?
He gave his life for this,
quit his job, sold his car and everything,
for a 14, 15 year old kid.
Without knowing if it would work, if there would be a reward.
And, the most important for me: not wanting the reward.
His reward was seeing me at Maracanã.
Money doesn't buy this.
DOZE LIFE AND STORY OF MARCELO VIEIRA
EPISODE TWO: "GRANDPA PEDRO AND THE ORANGE BEETLE"
Well...
Man, everybody liked my grandfather.
That was him as a person, but as a grandfather to me
he was a father, a mother, a grandmother, everything to me.
Not that I didn't have a grandma, a mom and a dad, but...
But the way he supported me, took me to training.
I want people to understand
that he did all of this to try to accomplish the dream.
It didn't mean that I was going to succeed.
And while he was...
trying... that,
he had to...
afford for his family, pay the water, gas, energy bills,
and with all this he was trying to fulfill my dream...
of becoming a footballer.
Since I was 4 years old playing at Guanabara club,
he was there.
Even "older," after I was 23 years old,
He was there.
I was already at Real Madrid but he was there,
and when I lost a game, I'd call him, talk to him.
He was always there for me, it was amazing living with him.
And I'm sure he's very happy.
Marcelo and Pedro...
had a very strong relationship.
Since I've met him, Pedro was an essential figure,
in his career, as a motivator...
in his football career.
He was the one accompaning Marcelo in his training,
taking him to Xerém, to Laranjeiras.
Always in his orange Beetle.
He was the one giving advices in what to improve in his game.
Always saying he was the best for him.
He was the one always motivaing.
And even in the end, already in Madrid,
when Marcelo was already secured at Real Madrid,
Pedro always called Marcelo at the end of the matches,
to say what he had thought of it,
he knew everything Marcelo had done,
he would record every match on TV,
he would watch 10 times the same match,
and count the number of passes.
It became something that Marcelo was always waiting for.
The match ended and he waited for that call.
I'm here today in Valdebebas recording
a part of the documentary from microsoft.
A very cool story
that I wanted to share with you
and today you will see a little bit of how it is recorded
Thanks hug.
At 7 years old, when he realized that I wanted to play,
he quit his job to try to fulfill his grandson's dream.
Man, and then...
he didn't have a car...
and he played the lottery,
using only his monthly wages.
He played the lottery and got 10 grand, I think.
The Beetle at the time, cost...
three thousand reais, man, he bought the Beetle.
But then there was the gas, maintenance and everything.
And I asked him: "Why did you buy it?"
And he was like: "If the Beetle breaks I can fix it.
I know how it works and we can save some money."
In his head, he had thought about everything to help me.
And then, man...
there was no money again.
Because I was growing up,
and there were more cousins.
Then he started working in a garage and some more money came in.
He'd get up early to go to the garage to deliver some car parts
in Maria das Graças and he'd take the car and go,
and still worked at the garage.
And that helped us as well.
And he would also take me...
to indoor soccer.
And after that he didn't stop working.
And he was working at 70 years old.
And having to take me to futsal.
And on the weekends he'd take me to the matches,
and right after this, I was at Xerém club.
And then it was an hour and a half drive to Xerém.
But, there was a point we couldn't afford gas.
It was when I began to take...
At 6:30 am, he'd take me to Central station.
There I would take the van to Xerém and he would return to work.
It is that effort that is impossible to pay back.
Everything he did for me not knowing if there would be a reward.
It's so strange saying that, because...
many people help kids in a lot of ways,
but wanting a reward in the future.
And he did all of that not wanting anything, you know?
To me it's something I can never pay him back for.
There was a moment I thought of giving up
on Xerém club.
I thought of it, because...
Caio, Clarice, Léo, everybody...
were "fooling around," you know, enjoying life.
And I was living in Xerém,
I couldn't see my friends in Rio, even though having others in Xerém,
but I wanted to go to the beach, to a party, I don't know,
just fool around like any other 15-year-old kid wants to do.
And there was a time I was at the bench, man,
I wasn't playing well, I don't know what happened.
Then I told my grandfather that I wasn't going anymore.
That I didn't want to play anymore, because...
I wanted to enjoy life at its fullest and I wasn't doing that,
that it looked like I was in the army,
a lot of things like that, you know? And then he said: "No...
You can't do this after all I've done for you,
after all I've fought for you to be where you are.
So close to become a professional, you can't throw that away."
And I said I didn't want it. All of my friends were out there,
playing for fun, going to the beach,
and me there, with time to sleep, to eat, I didn't want that for me.
And I also told him that I didn't want it because I wasn't playing,
and I said: "I'm at the bench, the coach doesn't use me."
And he said: "Listen, he will put you in the game.
Just wait for at least two weeks. You can't just give up like that,
fuck, out of nowhere.
So wait two weeks.
If he doesn't use you, fine, but I'm sure he will."
I said: "Ok, if he doesn't use me I won't come back to Xerém."
And then, I don't know how, the coach put me to play
and I never left.
And he would always tell this story to everybody:
he had persisted so much for me not to leave
that I gave up on giving up.
He would always tell this story to everybody.
And when Marcelo went to Xerém
it was the most complicated time for him.
I think he was at that age of...
the teenage years where we don't know well what we want,
we have doubts, we want to go out,
but must study,
we start dating, and...
And right at this age he went to Xerém.
It was at this time when he thought:
"Man, is this really what I want?
Should I give up?" And then Pedro was essential,
because he was the one who pushed him to...
Like: "I'll make you give up on giving up."
I stayed in Xerém all week long
and I was only coming back on the weekends
to play and hang out with my friends.
So, once I told my grandpa i did not want it anymore.
But I persisted so much he gave up on giving up.
Sometimes he makes some rabona skills and fool everyone, even me
Oh, man, the orange Beetle...
I have so many...
memories of it, because...
so much has happen in that Beetle.
At the time I played indoor, we'd go to Maria da Graça,
Penha, so many places inside that Beetle.
And it was always full.
Even far away, everybody said:
"Look at Pedro there!"
And...
he won some money on the lottery and was able to buy the car.
The car was amazing because it took us to a lot of places.
It took me to Xerém...
when I played indor soccer.
And it's still there, we have many memories.
The Beetle...
I took a few rides in the Beetle, when...
Pedro took him to play indoor soccer with my brother.
I remember when it took a turn it would shift radio stations.
By itself.
At each turn, the radio would shift by itself.
It was really funny.
He was very possessive of the Beetle.
My grandfather would say:
"I have nothing in my pockets, but I'm really happy, man."
It was so strange, we were happy because of nothing...
just to get the car and go to the beach,
and go to, I don't know...
just go to Caio's to say hello.
We were happy with these simple things, you know?
And, man...
The Beetle...
Back then, a Beetle was a Beetle.
You had it because you didn't have money to buy a better car.
But we were really happy, the Beetle helped us so much.
It was awesome.
I would drive it as well.
The lesson my grandfather taught me...
was always to respect people,
it doesn't matter where they came from, their color,
if they're older, younger, I don't know...
Just to respect.
Just: "Please" and "Thank you." Nothing more.
And...
And never give up on anything.
Even if you're sad, if things don't look so good, always...
think that deep down something will always get better.
That's what he taught me.
So, I try to teach this to my children
because I have to be a model
inside and outside the pitch, because they watch my matches.
I have to set an example, not only to them,
I have to set it to a lot of kids in the world, right?
The Brazilian National Team, Real Madrid, make you set an example.
Every time I played at Maracanã,
being able to score at Maracanã, that for me is...
At the old Maracanã, actually.
That's something I'll tell Enzo and he won't understand.
How the old Maracanã was.
Everybody at the courtside, that's priceless.
Every time I played there I would get sick in my stomach.
Looking at Maracanã...
