Hi, everybody and welcome back to my channel Little Pearls of Randomness
My name is Lauren and today we're covering a rather heavy topic of depression
Last week a member of one of my favorite Bands committed suicide - Linkin Park
And I'm pretty sure every YouTuber in the world is going to be doing a segment on depression
However living in New Zealand
teen suicide rates is one of the highest. I think it is the highest in the developed world which is really awful
And it's tragic, absolutely tragic, and it's still a taboo subject.
It's becoming a bit more vocal with things like the Netflix seriew 13 Reasons Why
and people wanting to make sure that other people could help so that's always a good thing
Having been in depression myself a while ago, a long while ago
it's not easy to pull yourself out of that rut
So I'm going to be looking at the New Zealand depression site
Just going to be pulling out some tidbits and stuff
from those things to potentially help you recognise if someone is going through depression
Okay, so just looking at the depression.org.nz site
Depression and anxiety affects us all differently. We all face challenges to our mental health.
Depression and anxiety changes the way, we think, feel and deal with tough times
Okay, so according to the site again, we all get stressed out and anxious at times.
This happens in my life all the time
Particularly at work, I get about stressed out and anxious about certain things that I can't control sometimes
So a bit of stress is fine
You know, life again full of ups and downs, and stress is a part of that down bit
But sometimes stress can help you through. You know gives you that extra adrenaline that you need
In that stress and that anxiety,
you're getting huge amounts of adrenaline through your body
it can take a toll on your body and your mental health
So, yeah, when everything gets absolutely overwhelming
And it stops you from doing things and feeling
how you want to feel and feeling normal
It makes you feel totally miserable
Yeah, sometimes having anxiety problems causes you to respond in ways that actually makes things worse and not better
Its absolutely awful sitting in bed thinking about things and not being able to sleep because you're so anxious
about what people said to you, what you could have done better and things like that
Not being able to get quality sleep as well just makes the problem even worse
Okay, so if you think that you have an anxiety probably as the things that you need to look for
Feelings when you're upset, you're worried, you're irritable, you can't relax ,
and you have difficulty concentrating.
So that's from the mental side and then from the physical side,
you get a sore head or a sore stomach or crippling headaches, and you get shaky and dizzy, your heartbeat is racing,
you get short of breath, you get butterflies in the stomach (that's awful that feeling), you feel tired all the time,
you might need to go to the bathroom a lot, you find it very difficult to sleep,
you either don't eat normal amounts of food so that could be overeating or undereating,
you get very jumpy, you get sweaty hands, and you feel hot ... and that feeling of getting hot and cold suddenly
From a behavioral side
you could lose your sense of humor,
be unable to decide what you want to do or be able to make decisions,
and need to perform certain rituals to try and relieve those worries
What potentially could be going through your head is "something terrible is going to happen", "people are looking at me", "I'm going crazy",
"I'll get it wrong and everyone will laugh at me", and "I can't control myself"
I have had anxiety in the past
I think as a young teen I had a lot of anxieties because I never felt like I was normal
Honestly I think normal is such an awful term. Everybody brings something unique into the world
and society shouldn't judge on what they think normal is because we're all beautiful individuals
and we all offer something different to offer
Saying that, there isn't a cure for anxiety or anything like that
So at the end of this video
I will give the New Zealand helpline numbers of where you can find resources and
potentially talk to someone who will be able to help you through this
Asking for help is not a weakness. It is, I think its one of the most bravest things that you could do
Going to talk about depression now which is just awful
Just imagine that someone's broken up with you, and you've got that awful feeling for a while
and then you're able to sort of pick yourself back up and and feel like life is getting back on track
Massive depression disorders means that you actually can't claw yourself back from that feeling
So those feelings last for a really long time and then they start getting away of your everyday life
Which it can come from... it can come from things like breaking up or someone close to you dies
or sometimes you can't explain what the cause is it just happens and
you just can't put your finger on why this is happening
Chemicals control, like your body is full of chemicals, and sometimes those chemicals even control your mood
Sometimes those chemicals get a little bit out of balance
Somethings things can make it worse
and it sort of feeds on itself so it just feels like everything's just piling on top of you
Just can't continue on with that rate of of things piling on top of you
So different types of depression needs different types of treatment
For mild depression apparently there's some self-help techniques out there for you which can be really, really helpful
For severe depressions, you likely need to go and get help from a professional
and they have been specifically trained in this
and, you know, sometimes even having just an outside person to talk to
about what's going on in your life that someone who has got no judgment
and no background knowledge can be very, very helpful
Just going on that point some businesses have a service called EAP
which you can utilise so I definitely recommend utilising that service
Its like a helpline and they will link you up with a professional who isn't related to your business
and is completely separate so it's a great service
Depression can get really really bad
When you feel like it's not worth going on and that everybody would be better off without you
When you're feeling this way
This is when you need to get help
Even before you get to that stage, you need to reach out and get help
Sometimes you don't want to ovverburden someone with what you're feeling
Please do! Don't forget that there is somebody out there that cares about you
So one of the most important things to prevent issues of mental health is to ensure that you are healthy
Eating a balanced diet, exercising
Exercise is fantastic!
Make sure that you can try and get some sleep. Turn off your phone
Find it very helpful listen to audiobooks. I sort of struggled to sleep without white noise
Sometimes I find having a bath is really helpful
So just, you know, making sure that you take care of yourself
Yep, bit of a heavy subject
And as mentioned ad-nosium, life is full of ups and downs
and if that down is continuing to go down at a rate that's making you feel overwhelmed,
please get help!

Please look up to find what services are available in your area and who you can reach out and talk to about this issue
I know this is a lifestyle channel and things but I think it's really important that we talk about depression
We don't make it a taboo subject in our society. That is recognized for what it is - it is a mental illness

that way in their life, that you can possibly help guide them to get the help that they need
