Hey, guys!
Welcome back!
One of my early videos was about PlayStation 2 Exclusive Games that, until now,
haven't received a facelift of any kind, or even a remaster, so
are you ready for 6 more?
Or… one, two, three, four, five, six, seven… eight more?
Let's take a look!
So, let's start things off with a PlayStation 2 exclusive racing franchise that, to this
day, hasn't received enough love from gamers, the amount of love needed to be revamped and
enhanced to the current gen systems.
The first two games on the ATV Offroad Fury series were developed by one of my favorite
studios that arose back in the end of the 90s, with the precious help from Microsoft
and their Game Studios.
I'm talking about Rainbow Studios, responsible for the Motocross Madness and Splashdown franchises,
besides others.
It would offer that same gameplay mechanics, and groundbreaking physics, but centered around
ATVs.
The third chapter was, then, handed over to another studio, Climax Racing, that was later
known as Black Rock Studio and, nowadays, a division of Disney Interactive Studios.
It improved and widely expanded beyond the previous title, that led to three new games
that I'm yet to grab:
ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails and ATV Offroad Fury Pro also exclusive, but for the PSP,
and ATV Offroad Fury 4, again exclusively on the PS2.
As a side note, Black Rock Studios later gave us the amazing Pure and Split/Second: Velocity
and sequels for both were on the making.
Disney, being Disney, ended up closing the studio somewhere around 2011 and, obviously,
rejecting those sequels.
As you all know, that same fate stroke LucasArts two years later.
Shame on you, Disney!
Ace Combat: Distant Thunder, also known as Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies, is, obviously,
the fourth chapter on the Ace Combat popular series and the first released for the PlayStation 2.
It has a perfect mix of arcade and simulation in this somewhat realistic flight combat action
driven title.
It offers around 21 different planes that are based on real models and even prototypes
that were being developed by that time, 17 years ago!
It introduced radio chatter and cutscenes to the series and the dog-fighting is highly
frenetic.
Eighteen missions awaits us, from search-and-destroy buildings to the aforementioned one-on-one
frenetic dog-fighting, and our fighter plane can be upgraded with a ton of different accessories,
devastating weapons and defense systems.
It also delivers a compelling and touching story that I'm not gonna spoil for you.
So, if you're a fan, or simply into this sort of realistic flight combat experiences,
Ace Combat 04 really deserves a look!
Again, in Europe it was known as Ace Combat: Distant Thunder.
Can't comprehend why the number "04" was dropped in this particular region of the globe.
Back in around 2005, game developers were after the perfect real driving simulator,
a trend that returned, full steam, 10 years later.
But Enthusia Professional Racing wasn't just a racing simulator.
It was the first - and last - racing simulator coming from Konami themselves that tried to
compete against Polyphony's Gran Turismo 4 that arrived in Europe and North America
right about the same time.
It doesn't have the depth of GT4, but I guess that it wasn't originally designed
to compete with Gran Turismo in that area.
This is a "pick and play" kind of simulation, being, at the same time, challenging and fun!
Mainly in what rear-wheel drive vehicles are concerned!
These are really hard to master!
Konami tried to keep things simple for those that doesn't have the time and patience
for a game like Gran Turismo, or even Forza, and I must say that they've kind of nailed
it on their first try!
Sadly, being released alongside Gran Turismo 4 didn't help, and Enthusia was forgotten
in a blink of an eye.
A pretty cool experience, nevertheless.
Back in 2002, - 2001 if you're in Japan or in the United States, FromSoftware released
yet another Armored Core game, the fifth in the franchise.
Another Age is a stand-alone expansion to Armored Core 2, that was also a PlayStation 2
exclusive game and a launch title in North America back in October of 2000.
It includes 100 new missions taking place 5 years after the events from the previous
game in where completing each one of those 100 missions will reward us with money to
upgrade our mech.
This expansion was the largest Armored Core game 'til then and runs on the same game
engine as the main, and previous, title, featuring some changes on how the player interacts with it.
Probably because this was where analog controls were introduced, for the first time, in an
Armored Core game.
GTC Africa was developed by Rage, being released, again, in 2002 exclusively for the PlayStation 2
and seen as a sort of follow up to another PS2 exclusive game:
Wild Wild Racing, that I also have in my collection and will be featured on a future video of
"Games Still Exclusive to the PlayStation 2",
but, obviously, only if you guys enjoyed this particular episode and the series in general.
GTC Africa, that stands for Global Touring Challenge Africa, is, as the name suggests,
exclusively set in Africa that offers the chance of driving 9 different cars in 19 circuits.
These circuits can be raced in three different championships:
the East Coast Championship, the North South Challenge and my favorite, the full African
Tour that includes all 19 circuits.
Don't expect it to be the Gran Turismo of rally games!
It's really far from that!
But if you want to try another PlayStation 2 racer that can't be played anywhere else,
well, just do it!
It's not that bad!
And, finally, to conclude this episode, here's AirBlade, this unique extreme sports game
from the developer Criterion Games most famous for the Burnout franchise.
In fact, AirBlade came immediately before the very first Burnout…
in Europe, at least!
As you can see here, it was still sealed from factory and this is the first time that I'm
gonna play it!
Do you recall TrickStyle for the Dreamcast, also from Criterion, and released back in '99?
That one was also available for Windows and, in 2017, was added to Steam.
AirBlade is a sort of spiritual successor to TrickStyle that offers that same vibe from
Tony Hawk's games, but in a futuristic setting and with an hoverboard, or something.
The game can be really unforgiving as you see here, extremely difficult and forcing
to start the level all over again when the time runs out.
Just like in the good old days!
But nowadays, I simply don't have the patience!
Even so, it's a gorgeous game and highly recommended for fans and, obviously, collectors
that just wants to have this exclusive PS2 gem in their collection!
It's really weird that the copies of AirBlade sold in Portugal were in Spanish language.
I bought this precise one from a local video store that also sold video games back in the
day and, besides not being localized to Portuguese or even have Portuguese subtitles, the only
language option available is Spanish.
So, guys!
