in a not so distant past, ended up triggering the Second World War.
Therefore, the creation of the European Union came as a way of avoiding future conflicts of this kind, through the equalization of countries and also benefits for them (especially the most vulnerable).
The European Union also currently has sovereign states, and they are the ones that are appearing on the screen at the moment: Italy, Germany, Portugal, Austria, Sweden, Belgium, United Kingdom (currently in process), Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, , Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania and Bulgaria.
It should not be confused, however, the European Union with Europe itself. Europe is the entire European continent and the European Union is the political-economic and trade bloc...
which united several European countries, but not all, in order to promote equal rules between them.
But with so many seemingly defined countries and purposes, why are there any countries that are threatening to leave such a bloc?
The story:

on February 7, 1992, and the European Union itself emerged on November 1, 1993 and laid the foundation for the creation of the euro, which would be officially adopted on December 16, 1995.
The bloc had some revisions throughout its existence, the last significant one occurred in 2007, with the Treaty of Lisbon, which came into force in 2009. The de facto capital of the European Union is Brussels, but there is no official capital declared.
The European Union has developed strategically in its possibilities, since the markets of the countries that make up the current Union are open to negotiations...

To date, the United Kingdom has not officially left the European Union, and this event is dated March 29, 2019.
Brussels is the de facto capital, but unofficial capital of the European Union, since it has never officially declared a capital.
Brussels was also home to the largest number of European Union meetings.
Conclusion:
The European Union is a political-economic and trade bloc, currently composed of 28 countries (with the possible exit from the United Kingdom of the bloc, scheduled to take place officially in 2019).
