The Earth's Internet: How Fungi Help Plants Communicate - Duration: 5:20.

The internet connects more than half of the world's population

through an invisible web of servers, computers, and devices.

It has changed our lives in countless ways

by allowing otherwise separated people to interact

and by providing access to vast amounts of information.

But humans aren't the only organisms on the planet

with an invisible interconnected network.

While plants might seem like isolated, solitary individuals,

they're capable of communicating with each other,

sometimes over considerable distances,

all thanks to their special relationship with fungi.

Nearly all plant species we know of have a mutually beneficial relationship

with soil fungi called mycorrhizae.

Mycorrhizae grow a network of small, branching tubes, called a mycelium,

that extends throughout the soil, including inside of or around plant roots.

And these allow the fungi to absorb nutrients from the soil,

like nitrogen and phosphorus, which plants struggle to extract.

So they basically barter: in exchange for those hard-to-get nutrients,

the plants trade the fungi carbon in the form of sugars.

And ultimately, together, both can thrive when they otherwise wouldn't.

This symbiotic relationship between plants and fungi

was discovered in the early 1900s, but it wasn't until 1997

that we understood just how deep this underground network goes.

Ecologist Suzanne Simard had a hunch

that plants weren't just sharing nutrients with fungi, but also with each other.

To test her hypothesis,

she and her colleagues infused trees in a forest

with a traceable, radioactive form of carbon,

and later took samples from neighboring trees.

And it turned out many nearby trees had the radioactive carbon, too,

proving that plants could send nutrients back and forth to one another.

Not only that,

they seemingly distributed the nutrients where they were needed most.

Plants need light energy to turn carbon dioxide and water

into sugar and oxygen

thanks to that magical process called photosynthesis.

So those in shade have less sugar to go around.

Simard found that these shaded, energy-deficient trees

ended up with more of the radioactive carbon

than their sunbathing counterparts.

So it's basically the plant-fungi equivalent of feeding the hungry.

Continued research into these underground networks,

called Common Mycelium Networks,

has revealed that plants are not only able to gain access to more nutrients,

they can also engage in sophisticated communication

by "talking" chemically through mycelia.

And, it turns out, they're saying quite a bit!

Generally, any seedling that's plugged into the Common Mycelium Network,

or CMN, has a higher likelihood of surviving.

And plants that are "online" are generally healthier, too.

Researchers think this has to do with having access

to an early warning system.

When a plant is attacked, it releases chemicals

that tell nearby plants something bad is coming their way.

This communication happens with airborne compounds,

but also through a CMN.

And other plants heed this warning.

For example, when tomato plants are connected by a CMN,

and one plant is attacked by a pest,

nearby plants will activate their defenses before the pest reaches them.

Scientists are only just starting to understand

how important these plant networks are.

They've discovered that entire forests can be interconnected,

but like with our internet,

connectivity throughout an ecosystem isn't evenly distributed.

Older, larger trees are more connected,

kind of like some servers in the human internet.

These highly connected trees are called hub or mother trees.

They have big root networks that host a greater diversity of mycorrhizal fungi,

and that allows them to interact with a lot of other plants.

They do play favorites, though…

Scientists have shown they can send 'care packages' of extra nutrients

to their kin to help them survive, which is how they got the mommy moniker.

And they also can help forests transition during times of change.

When they're injured or dying, they release a surge of carbon

into the network which nurtures the next generation of trees,

even if they're a different species.

Of course, no internet is complete without hackers.

Some plants can claim territory and influence community dynamics

by sending toxins into the CMN.

Black Walnuts will use these networks

to release toxins into the soil, for example.

Those that are immune to the toxins thrive, while others struggle or die off.

And harmful worms, parasitic plants, and fungi

can find their way to the plants they target by following chemical trails

emitted by the mycorrhizae underground.

It's amazing to think that this chemical information superhighway

was right below our noses for eons and yet we had no clue.

But now that we can finally plug in, it might just help us connect

with the planet's flora in much more constructive ways.

Knowledge of this interconnectivity is helping improve our relationship to plants,

including things like forest conservation and agriculture.

For example, preserving the highly connected mother trees from deforestation

ensures mycorrhizal fungal diversity,

and helps forest regrowth happen more quickly.

And farming in soil with a CMN means plants can warn each other

of invading pests, which may reduce the need for pesticides.

Like with the human internet, the internet of the earth increases security,

awareness, and knowledge for those connected to it—including us.

Does he help you when you have a problem or an issue? When you have problems,

I HAD TO EAT FOODS I HATE FOR 24 HOURS!! - Duration: 17:01.

This is Joss, my girlfriend. To explain how she ended up with that look on her

face let's go back to the beginning..

The other day we had lunch in the city I looked at Joss and when I noticed there

are quite a lot of things she doesn't like to eat.. A thought came to my mind:

Maybe she's only thinking she doesn't like those things... What if she would

actually try them? so this morning I made a plan I will challenge her to eat only

food that she doesn't like. While Joss was doing her makeup I took out all the

things from our fridge and brought them to a neighbor, except for eggs, milk, cheese

and tuna. I decided to be a good boyfriend and already prepared a

breakfast

Then I waited for her to come in.

-Morning!

I think she didn't like what she saw

I made breakfast for you today. Are you excited? -I'm not eating that you know I

don't eat milk and eggs. -You cannot eat milk, you drink milk. -Well you know I don't eat that

anyways. I'm gonna have cereals, whatever.. -Cereals? -Yeah I'm not drinking that.

Janik! Come here! Where's everything?

Haha look at this.. -Janik is not funny!

Look this is an experiment.. -Aaah you think you are Buzzfeed or what?

this is an experiment so I told her about my plan and as expected she was

not that happy..

luckily since I expected this reaction I already had an answer

don't like and spit it out after the first second

I don't have my old shirt cuz I had to wash it but I'm ready to be back in the game

about an hour -How are you holding up? -I've been

welcome -And it also has... cheese -It has cheese and olives! -Who buys these? it looks so disgusting!

just imagine you're gonna love it and

then you are crazy about it and then you can say: "I've been wasting my entire life I

could have eaten olives for the last 24 years" oh they are so hard...

I think I know how

to make it a little bit better take a bit of the cheese... that's gotta be better

hahaha sorry for mixing -OMG pass it already! - do you need a bag?

no oh I already passed it! pretty brave! I'm trying not to be such a wuss!

so in a world with only olives... -I would die.. -when the

60 minutes had passed we grilled the fish and Joss was so hungry that she

actually looked forward to it

even gave you this lemon I want her to put all this stuff on top because I

think maybe then she's gonna like it...

We arrived to Munich and before the grand finale I decided to give Joss one more snack

pickle when she tried it I was surprised but what looked like a happy face in the

beginning, turned into something else soon after...

it's so juicy huh huh I don't like it.. Arg I don't like it... really?

it's eatable it's eatable we still had two hours until dinner and when shopping

for a while but I guess she wasn't that thrilled knowing she still had to eat

something later I think she's angry at me

No I'm just grumpy in general, I'm hungry, I'm grumpy..

and then it

was dinner time.. What is this? so this behind us is a Japanese

restaurant, do you know what you're about to eat? -sushi or something...

okay let's go since I knew just doesn't like fish I decided to go for the inside

out mix that had shrimp salmon, and surimi sushi rolls and because I don't like

sushi either I order chicken and rice for myself

she's in a very good mood she's really not in a good mood but I'm having fun, are you

excited? -No -have you ever really had sushi? -yeah -when?

where? well like Makis? yeah -but that's not Makis is something but we are both

gonna try it we go through this together -sure.. -okay? yeah deal!

that's Janik's dish.. that's mine.. after she learned how to use chopsticks she

surprisingly said -I'm a little bit excited I mean it's the first time... -that's wasabi -Is

horrible right? -yeah I think I don't like it oh my god without anything? okay

okay drink drink something! wasabi taste like something that

is not supposed to be eaten uh I get goosebumps just thinking about it! is

horrible! The rice looks good.. I like the rice...

looks so good you're gonna like it dude! you're gonna like it! But that's not fish...

this is shrimp... oh yeah? Oh I don't like it...

Is good, since there's a lot of things going on here I don't feel the

fish so much so it's better but I didn't expect to like it I've never liked any

of these before. I'm kind of like shocked because I didn't expect her to like any

of this

I barely felt it -you barely felt it? -yeah because is mixed with stuff.. -oh I want to try

you guys man it looks

wooooh she likes sushi! wow look at her! look at that smile on her face! I'm

gonna eat it okay? in the end I think we can call this day success although from

the 10 things she tried she felt like vomiting four times and had to spit out

two other ones, she at least called two of them eatable and she actually liked

the salmon and the sushi. So guys that was it for this video

I'm so glad is over I was also very grmmpy because I was hungry most of the

but actually I am pretty happy that you did this because I

tried some stuff that I always thought I hated and some of them were not as bad as I thought

salmon we're pretty good yeah some things

There is no player like Russell Westbrook and if you've seen him play, you know he

is always going 100 miles per hour and playing angry, but why?

It's deeper than you think.

What is up dudes, dudettes, ballers, players.

Russ has been called the fiercest competitor in the NBA today.

He looks like he is trying to kill his opponent and the rim.

Where this attitude comes from goes back to high school, but first, hit that like button

Russell Westbrook wasn't born with a highly competitive attitude.

He grew up in LA playing multiple sports including football and basketball.

He was actually more gifted in football at a younger age but would find his interest

in basketball and would play for Leuzinger High School.

Leuzinger High School had a player that had the youngest Drew League debut at 15, had

multiple college offers, was called the best high school basketball player in the nation

and no this was not Russell Westbrook.

He wasn't good.

He was only 5' 8" and wasn't even a starter for varsity.

This other star's name was Khelcey Bars.

Khelcey Bars was not only this amazing player, but lived across the street from Westbrook,

it was a 30 second walk.

Khelcey and Russ were best friends and were inseparable, spending countless hours together.

They had dreams of playing college basketball together even though it looked like Russ wouldn't

get any offers.

Khelcey, at 16 years old, seemed like he would be an NBA star.

As a 6' 6" small forward, he could shoot 3s, rebound, play make, bring the ball up,

defend.

His future was bright, but one day Khelcey suddenly collapsed playing pick-up basketball.

Everyone thought he was joking until Khelcey started rolling his eyes back.

He was revived once with CPR, but on the way to the hospital, Khelcey would pass away.

Russ had left the gym before all of this had happened and never witnessed what had happened

to Khelcey, but it was a big deal.

I mean, he just lost his best friend.

Khelcey dying when he had such a bright future shook Russell Westbrook even more.

It opened his eyes and made him realize to never take life for granted.

There's just too much to live for.

Right after his death, Russ started to push himself in basketball and everyone around

him saw it, a fire in his eyes.

Russ said that the reason he began to work even harder was because Khelcey would have

done the same.

Their assistant coach Young says that Russ is living for two people, that he has the

energy of Khelcey within him.

Russ would go Russ to this day is still impacted by his friend's death.

He refuses to slow down for a second because he knows that Khelcey was ravenous about basketball.

Khelcey spent hours in the gym, hours training, and was in love with basketball.

When the coaches came to tell Russ that Khelcey had died, Russ had already found out and was

watching game tape of the Lakers versus Spurs.

The coaches said he looked catatonic, as if he was in a spell.

He would say that I give it my all, 100 percent, because you never know what will happen the

next day.

The next year, Russ would average 25 points and 8.7 rebounds because he made basketball

his life.

He became the star of his high school basketball team and would get an offer from UCLA, the

dream school Khelcey and Russ had wanted to play for together on.

Russ to this day wears KB3 on his wristbands in honor of his best friend.

That's why he plays with such a passion on the floor, because he's living two lives.

It comes out as rage, but it's just raw emotion.

A lot of us like to hate on Russell Westbrook for his play, but I think we gotta give it

to him on loyalty.

I love Russ's relentless drive, but I don't know if that's enough for him to win a championship.

3 Easy back to school hairstyles | Natural Curly hair - Duration: 4:51.

Hey lovely people it's your girl Tiff here from transition healthy self and in today's video

I'm gonna be bringing you three quick and easy back to school or back to college hairstyles for the natural curly diva

like myself

So I'm gonna be starting off on freshly washed hair and the only two things I have in my hair right now are leaving conditioner

And oil now. I did not put too much because we have been in the water and we're gonna be going back today

So I don't want to waste my products

So if you're wondering with a couple of those little things that are flying around that's what it is

My hair is still a little wet

So that's probably some of the product just kind of flying since I'm manipulating it right now

This first hairstyle is gonna be very simple

You can get an afro pick and kind of fluff your hair out and mess with it until you get it to the style that

you like

similar to the one that I have in the intro

That's pretty much what this is. It's just a big curly afro, really simple really easy style number one

alright style number two

I'm just taking my finger and creating like a little part in the front of my hair and then I'm taking two pieces and

Kind of separating them very very gently and creating a twist look now this first one

Regardless of what side you decide to choose to start off with but this first one is going to be my supporter

So I'm going to twist my hair all the way down

To the back of my hair as far as I can go and I'm gonna create a bun in the back of my hair

So this side of my hair will be the support

for the bun in the back

All right moving on to the second part of my hair, I'm gonna do the same thing. I'm just gonna take two pieces

gently separate them and go ahead and start twisting and

Grab another two pieces and just add to the twist itself going all the way down

But just separating the hair very gently because like I said, I just have leave-in conditioner and very little oil

So I'm not trying to pull and yank my hair. Just creating a simple quick hairdo

It should take about two to three minutes if you do this hairstyle

Obviously if you have enough time, you can add your edges and some little gems and things like that, but totally up to you

I'm gonna go ahead and place all of this now into a bun. Like I said, I do not have a perfect part

it's just a quick simple look but you get the idea and

I'm just going to show you the back to see how it looks very simple tucked away

With the supporting side and that's it guys super super easy

This last final look is probably the easiest of them all

We've all done it before and it is just a big pineapple

Ponytail that's it. You can pull all your hair up to the top

It's up to you where you want to have it?

I find it more comfortable to not necessarily have it right on the top of my head but a little towards the back of

my hair and

Again, you can fluff it with your fingertips, or you can get an afro pick and kind of pick away at it

What I like about this

Ponytail or this style is that you can accessorize it so many different ways

You can put a flower you can put a clip in this case

what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna pull the sides of my hair and create these little baby hair kind of

Hanging off to the side of my hair and just twist it on and letting them hang

Nice and straight so just really cute accessory very simple

Now if you don't like this, look, I am going to do it option number two

Which I actually wound up

Sticking with and I'm gonna use a little bit of rose water and glycerin now you can use whatever you want

But for me, that's generally what I use

for little details like this and you just finger coil it wait for about 10 to 15 seconds and

let go and there you have it a cute little curl and

I have one on each side and you get the idea and it lasts all day

And that's all it is is just water and a finger coil

so and then I decided to accessorize a little bit more with my sunglasses and

Testing "The Green Machine": the Air Trap - Duration: 9:08.

So, here we have some "blood".

Well, really it's not blood, obviously, it's some coffee and water.

We did that to have a different color, because if we just used water, you know water is clear,

so we would not be able to see much.

So, yeah, so what we gonna demonstrate is here is how the safety mechanism of the Herrmann

machine works.

So, this is an air trap, and this is a clamp.

And the way it works is that when this air trap detects air in the line, the clamp is

triggered and it closes the line.

So, this is one of the safety mechanisms.

Then another one is that when the air trap detects air that ... it stops the pressure.

So there is no more … the infusion is basically interrupted.

And creates vacuum, exactly.

So, yeah we gonna demonstrate this here.

So, we're creating a vacuum, we're opening the clamp here of the infusion line and you

see our coffee and water mixture is being sucked in through the line, our delicious

infusion here, I hope she put some sugar in it, just kidding.

So, you see it's going up and going up and it's going into this egg-shaped bottle,

this is also, this is a unique invention of the Herrmann company.

So you see this is … what material is this?

It's a, it's medical plastic, 100% ozone durable.

OK, you heard it guys.

And here, there is a filter attached to it (a blood filter) and so this is, you have

to imagine you, you know here where our coffee is, really will be your blood, right, and

you see it's being basically sucked in.

OK, so what we're gonna do now is … we gonna …

First of all, I have to confirm that I put everything in the right order.

That's also what the machine is writing down, it is written here.

So I have the tube in the sensor, I have the tube in the clamp valve, and before I build

up pressure, there is no sign to build up pressure, I need to confirm, I as a doctor

need to confirm by pressing the silver button that everything is in order.

In the moment when I press the silver button the sign "ozone" appears.

So in the moment when I press "ozone on", the device is neutralizing the vacuum, the

rest of the vacuum, and then it is building up pressure.

So now already the re-infusion starts.

Right, we're seeing it already is going down in the egg.

So basically the re-infusion is already underway, right?

Yep.

And what we're gonna simulate in a little bit is what happened if by accident there

were some air bubbles in the line.

So, we're gonna demonstrate how the safety mechanism is triggered and how it works.

OK, so yeah, let's do this, let's (lass es leer werden - German) …

Ah ok, great, so exactly, so what we gonna do first is we're just gonna let it just

run it through.

So, let's say, you know, you're having the 10 pass done and that by accident somebody,

that the doctor or the nurse has left the room, and the blood is leaving the egg shaped

bottle, and no one is there to stop the procedure, right, so this machine is then triggered and

it interrupts the infusion so there will be no air going into your vein.

So, yeah, let's watch it now.

You see, it's going through the line, BAM!

Ok, so that's basically … so a couple of things happened: 1.

the green line … the green light turned blue so that means that the air trap was triggered,

and then immediately the clamp was, yeah, triggered.

And you see, so here is air, and here still the coffee mixture and so it was not even

able to go into the clamp because the clamp already closed up and closed the line.

So, this is a safety precaution and we demonstrated that it works, that it works really well.

OK, so now we're gonna do another thing. Right, so what we gonna do, let's say that the

nurse or the practitioner or whoever was operating it, made an error.

In the way that they forgot to put the line into the clamp, and that they falsely pressed

this button.

Because this button is basically is a .. is an "enter" button or a button that … is

a confirmation.

So, you press this … you have to press this to confirm that everything is set correctly.

But if the practitioner made a mistake or didn't pay attention and did not put the

line in the clamp, as it's supposed to be, and confirmed, right, then something like

this can happen. OK?

So, we're gonna show now what … if the safety mechanism still works in such a

case.

OK, so … uh … OK, what what's happening now?

The mixture is going down … right, so, we're already creating positive pressure, right?

So, the thing, you see the liquid is going down.

And now …. so shortly there will be air in the line.

Ok, so you see, it's leaving the egg.

And now there is air going into the line.

OK, so you see what happened: So, even though the line was not in, in this second safety

mechanism, OK, which is an operator error, OK, human error.

Right?

Due to human error.

So even though, eh, as I said the line was not in here, it's … the machine recognized

this, because it's so, OK, there is air in the line, and what it did, the

machine, it created immediately vacuum.

So, the liquid was not able to run further down.

OK?

So, here you see, here is where the liquid stopped.

So, … I mean this is really extraordinary.

You know, it basically, it accounts for human error that even if the if the somebody, if

the like the person who is operating the machine does not do everything correctly, the machine

can still, you know, the safety mechanism will still be triggered.

So now we're gonna simulate another situation.

(it's from shaking, "dass Luft reinkommt"), right exactly: So, because what can happen

is that when there is blood in the egg and you shake it in order to mix it with the ozone,

so, what can happen is that just a little bit of gas enters the line, right.

So, we're gonna try to create like a small piece basically of … of air.

Or of in that case it's oxygen in the line by tilting it.

Ok so like this, you see and BAM!

So it works the same way.

OK, hold on a second, hold on, hold it like this, so you see, OK here is coffee, here

are bubbles and here is coffee and you see there is still liquid in the bottle and you

see so those small bubbles were enough to to trigger that mechanism.

And as you see the infusion was interrupted.

OK. Great.

Hey! How are you? I'm angry today. But that has nothing to do with this video. So

let's talk about things that don't make me angry instead, like booktubeathon! Hi!

Today I'm here to share my booktubeathon TBR with you guys. I actually filmed this

on the day that the read-a-thon challenges, for the booktubeathon were

announced, but I decided that I didn't like the filming set up so I decided to

refilm it. So the first challenge for the booktubeathon read-a-thon was to flip a

coin to help you decide between two different books, and I thought it would

be kind of fun to do that as a theme. Ao I've picked two books that are either

prizewinners or like shortlisted / long listed for like prizes. And I'm gonna

flip a coin to choose between them. So the first book is... apparently this book

is shiny, so you can't see it very well, so I'm gonna put up a thing instead.

Anyway the first book is 'The Natural Way Of Things.' And the second book is 'A Case

of Exploding Mangoes,' which I got only relatively recently at a book swap that

a fellow Aussie booktuber organised a couple of weekends ago.

Coin.

I didn't choose things for the things. Wo we'll make this one heads, and this one

tails, and we'll flip it again. I'm just gonna...

Tails. Which is 'A Case of Exploding Mangoes.' So that is book one for my TBR.

How exciting. The second challenge is to read a book about something that you

have always wanted to do. So something that I have always always wanted to do

is travel to England, because my grandparents are both English. They were

the first generation of my family to come to Australia, so I've always felt a

really strong affinity with England ,and like London, and all of that kind of

stuff, so to match with that I have chosen to read 'Sense and Sensibility.'

Which is a book I was supposed to read this month for the Keep It Classic book

club. But we might have to push it to next month because ya girl is just a

hot mess and cannot achieve anything. This book is set in England and that is..

that's the link. It's not a very good link, but it's a link. Book number three

is to read a book and watch a book-to-movie adaptation, and for that I am just

basically reapplying 'Sense and Sensibility,' so that I can read that and

watch the movie adaptation with Emma Thompson in it. Because I've always

wanted to watch it, but I'm one of those really really weird people who insists

waiting until they've read the book before they watch the movie, so I haven't

watched it, because I haven't read the book, and now is the time to change both

of those things. The next challenge is to read a book with green on the cover. I

think the book that I wanted to read is this one here. Which is called 'The Palace

of Tears.' It has a tiny amount of green on the cover. This was an impulse buy

when I went to a secondhand bookshop to buy some books that I was going to use

the pages for a book-related craft. And I kept picking up books that I was like "oh

that looks small and cheap and maybe that'll do for the book craft" and then I

would read the blurb and be like "no I want to read that one" and this is one of

them. So that's kind of cool. Challenge number five is to read a book while

wearing a hat the whole time. So the most important part of this challenge..

it's not actually in the book, it's the hat.

Hat, and book. So I'm gonna be reading 'The Slow Regard of Silent Things.' Number six

is to read a book with a beautiful spine, and for this I'm going to use another book

that I've only just got recently.. which was in a video that I posted recently,

I'm going to be reading 'Under The Greenwood Tree' by Tom Hardy. I'm going to

be reading this particular edition because just look at that spine. And the

final challenge is to read seven books, which I.... (two, three, four, five) ... am two

books short of. And I do want to try and do that, but I don't think I'll succeed

so this is like my main TBR. Plus 'Sense and Sensibility' which I don't own yet. In

order to aim for seven books I do have two extra books that I'll try and add to

my TBR. So first up is 'Fingersmith' by Sarah Waters which is a book that I

started reading ages ago and didn't finish because I was at uni at the time,

and had to do lots of readings for uni and therefore just.. like, couldn't handle

life. So I'm gonna try and read that and watch the television adaptation for that,

to cover challenge number three if I need to. And the other book that I

really want to read at the moment is The Enchantress of.... god the lighting here. What

is going on?? 'The Enchantress of Florence.' Which is also shiny, and apparently the

lighting is just being a bitch today, so it doesn't want to show you it at all. So

I'll have to flash up a picture for that. So there you have it! That is my TBR. So

my main TBR is this, and then I have these two extra books to try

and make it up to seven books for the challenge of reading seven books. But my

priority obviously is the first five books, which is already a lot of books

for me to read in a week, seeing as I barely even read five books in a month.

But that's what booktubeathon is all about! Yeah I'm actually really excited

to read all of these books. Lots of these are books that I've only got in the last

like three days that I'm just like "okay I wanna read these now" which almost

never happens for me.... Like, normally I buy a book and I'm like "I want to read it

now" and then I don't read it for like two years. I can't tell if I'm talking

really really fast because I'm excited, or because I'm still really really angry.

I feel like it might just be because I'm feeling, like, hella angry and aggressive

right now. But that's fine. I will see you for another video very shortly I'm sure.

National Geographic Channel Star Nicholas 'Duffy' Fudge Dies at 28 - Duration: 2:24.

 Nicholas "Duffy" Fudge, a cast member on National Geographic Channel's , has died

He was 28.  The series announced the sad news alongside a photo of Fudge in a tweet on its official Twitter account Sunday

 ".@NatGeoChannel and @Pilgrim_Studios were saddened to learn that cast member Nicholas 'Duffy' Fudge passed away this week," the statement reads

 "Duffy was the first mate on Captain Tyler McLaughlin's fishing vessel, Pinwheel," the statement continues

"We join his family and friends in mourning his untimely loss."  According to his obituary on the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home website, Fudge "passed away unexpectedly" on Thursday, July 19

 In honor of the late National Geographic Channel star, the show had a moment of silence on Twitter during Sunday evening's episode

 "As a memorial for Duffy, we will be having a moment of silence on our Twitter during tonight's episode," the series tweeted

"Rest In Peace."  "His passions were fishing and the outdoors. As a child, Nick began tuna fishing with his father and grandfather," his obituary reads
