Hey guys!
Welcome to my channel, I'm Loretta!
HEY!
This is my channel!
Hello FOR REAL guys!
I'm the real Loretta!
Let me start over,
Hello everyone, I'm Akkie from Sambon Juku channel!
Today we're going to try
a quiz game to test each other's Japanese/English skills
we're doing the Language Challenge!
I prepared English questions for you
you did Japanese?
Yep! I created Japanese questions
to quiz Loretta with.
my Japanese is so going to look bad.
Well, today is like a match!
Yep! Let's jump right in.
Good luck! Good luck!
The categories are
IDIOMS
FOOD
SLANG
DIALECTS
those are the four!
and each level corresponds to points.
Whoever gets more points wins.
I just got nervous!
Can I pick?
Yep, go!
OK, so lets start with something easy...
FOOD, #1
RARE, MEDIUM, WELL-DONE.
Oh, I know this!
This is the done-ness of a steak?
It's actually the same in Japanese.
Oh no!
The pronunciation is different
since its in katakana, but
rea, miidiamu, werudan
It's the same...
If I said it that way, would I be understood?
Like if I said 'werudan, werudan' at an American restaurant?
I don't think they'd understand.
RARE! MEDIUM! WELL DONE!
Oh, sounds good!
Thanks!
So, pronunciation is really important.
Dialects, #1.
So, I'm from Saitama Prefecture.
My grandmother and grandfather are from Gunma.
But Gunma and Saitama dialect are kind of similar
so today I thought I'd represent
the Saitama and Gunma dialect!
So Dialects #1...
is "NANNAN"
Like, "WTF?!"
Ahh...kind of close!
Here's an example,
"Something nice happened to me,"
"Oh really? nan nan?"
Oh, like "What's that?"
Yeah! Its the same as "nan nanno?"
I like that it's even shorter.
OK, let's get through these!
Slang #1 !
I R L
WHAT?!
I R L ?!
I have no idea!
YASSSSS!
I don't know. I give up!
So close!
It means, "In Real Life"
So if you said LOL... IRL
Well, maybe you wouldn't write that but
it means that you are ACTUALLY laughing, not just writing LOL.
Like, you're in front of your computer, actually laughing out loud.
In real life.
When you're not just typing something, but actually doing the thing, in real life.
Ahh, that's how to use it?
Next!
Japanese Idioms... #1 !
KAPPA NO KAWANAGARE
Kappa are the things that bow right? A: ...WHAT?
The legends like... if they bow you defeated them somehow?
Well, they hold water on their head.
and if the water spills out, they die.
And, they love cucumbers.
What?!?! I give up.
You can figure it out!
Kappa live in rivers
and, they're good at swimming
but sometimes kappa can fall in the current.
Oh, so like, anyway can mess up?
Yeah, that's it!
Even skilled people can fail.
Ohhhh, you did it!
You get a point for figuring it out!
HOLD YOUR HORSES.
Don't let the horses run away?
So like.... take a chance?
Opposite.
Opposite?!
DON'T take chances?!
It means, HOLD ON or WAIT.
HOLD YOUR HORSES!
HOLD the horse your riding?
Yeah! Exactly.
CALPIS.
That yogurt flavored drink!
Correct!
When I was in high school,
A kid from New Zealand studied abroad at my school,
and my English pronunciation was really bad
but I tried really hard to say this drinks name,
and said COW PISS.
He was like, GROSS, what are you DRINKING?!
Hahah, right?!
Everyone thinks that!
The name sounds like Cow Piss.
The name is so unfortunate.
Yeah, that's too bad!
But its SOOOOOO delicious!
Right?
Bee-tee-dubs, I think "Pis" is supposed to sound like "Peace."
"Peace" on your body.
omg don't say PEACE ON YOUR BODY
that's way worse!
Let's do some dialects. #1
So, I'm originally from Virginia.
I've been told I talk a lot like people from there.
So I put together some words that are particular to the area.
Lightning Bug!
Firefly?
yeah!
Oh, you know?
Firefly right?
I got it!
Have you heard of that?
Nope, but you can kind of figure it out.
Interesting!
Saitama, Gunma Dialects...#2!
Chittonbe.
That doesn't even sound Japanese?!
My grandfather uses it a lot.
Is it katsudon?
like "tonbe" sounds like... pork and rice?
It's not the name of a thing.
I have no idea!
For example, "Can you speak English?" "Chittonbe."
Oh, like "just a little?"
TOE BEANS!
Beans from your toes?
not edible beans,
but the dirty beans between your toes?
EW?!\ NO NO NO NO WHAT?!
As a kind of internet slang,
it means an animals... A: oh, their paws!
The little paw pads look like beans.
I see! I didn't know that one!
No points for you! Look at the toe beans!
Idioms #2. "SHIKII GA TAKAI"
Shchi ?! Russian soup?
I have no idea.
For example, if we got in a fight today
then the next time we had to meet
I'd be like... ah...shikii ga takai ne.
Like, you feel a wall? A: Yeah, cuz you feel guilty.
You feel weird to see them next L: like, an awkward feeling between people?
The rail beneath a sliding door is called "SHIKII" in Japanese
So it's as if the rail is too tall and you don't wanna trip on it.
Japanese people misuse this phrase
saying like it's hard to enter a high-end restaurants.
But there's nothing to feel guilty or fault about
so it's not SHIKII GA TAKAI in that case. You can just say "it's hard to go in."
Cool! Ok, next one!
LOX. A: how do you spell that?
It sounds like a soap brand. L: You mean LUX from Japan right???
I don't know this one!
I think it comes from German originally?
A: Is it in Japan L: Recently I saw it!
But only in a few places. A: It's German cuisine?
Not German, it's Yiddish. From American Jewish culture.
In New York its a really common topping to put on a bagel.
On a BAGEL?!
It's sour. A: SOUR?!
Just tell me, I won't know this one.
It's a brined salmon! I saw this at Haneda airport actually.
I was so shocked to find bagels and lox at the airport in Japan!
If you go to any bagel shop in NYC and say "bagel and lox!' they'll bring it right out.
HATENKOU.
The Kanji looks like the weather is terrible.
Yeah, the Kanji looks kinda bad
but it means a good thing actually.
It kind of means like a pioneer.
Someone who does something amazing that's never been done before. Something ground-breaking.
Like an Elon Musk type?
MOONBOUNCE.
The moon is... bouncing?
Kids play with this.
Ah, like a trampoline? Close!!
What's similar to a trampoline?!
But bigger.
That thing you go inside of?
Yep! That's called a MOONBOUNCE where I'm from.
Around Virginia.
Because you can walk on it like you're bouncing on the moon!
Ahhh i get it!
Apparently other people just call it a Bouncy House?
Food #2 !
Do you know "ABURA SOBA" ?
I love it! Ramen without the soup!
To put it frankly.
You just mix it, smile, and eat.
ROOM FOR MILK
I know this! Like at starbucks
when you order a coffee
"Do you want milk? Should I leave room so you can pour it?"
Correct!
Do you need room for milk? WHAT?!
I was confused at first by this.
Food #3, is SAKURA, BOTAN, MOMIJI, KASHIWA
What are these names of?
L: Sizes? A: Not sizes.
Japanese sake?
Not sake.
What is it? I give up.
They're types of meat.
Horse meat is called "Sakura".
Boar is called "Botan" (peony).
Deer is called "Momiji" (Autumn leaves.)
Last is rabbit?
Last is Bird, called "Kashiwa" (oak).
It's pretty much only used
like in a restaurant or bar, on the menu.
When you can't actually say the name of the meat,
it's written as these plants to sound prettier.
Idiom, #1 !
Cat got your tongue!
Sensitive tongue?
Or, when you're drunk and slur your words?
Not drunk, but kind of like that.
The words won't come out.
When you can't get the word out.
But it sounds kind of mean.
Like "What's wrong? Cat got your tongue?"
So if you misuse it might anger someone.
It's to provoke someone kind of.
Slang #1 !
ARU ARU.
I know this! Like "Foreigners ARU ARU means,
the things they commonly talk about
or like, typical foreigner things. Yep.
On TV you see it a lot
if you use ARU ARU after anything, it's like stereotypes.
With friends you can say ARU ARU too.
DANK!
It's usually said as "dank memes" on the internet.
I've seen it but I don't know.
The real meaning of dank, is like when you leave something out
and it gets kind moldy
and moist and stinky
it's not a good think.
Oh, so like something get's old?
Out of fashion.
Yeah! Like, so lame.
So, an old meme that use to be hot.
But usually dank is just like, something old.
It's a negative image.
Dialects #3!
Bucharu!
Young kinds may not use this anymore though.
Like, your teacher would ask "OK class, turn in your homework!"
And a kid would say, "Sorry, I buchatta."
Like, you totally bombed it?
Worse than that. Buchachau.
Throw it out?! Yep!
Like, you actually threw it in the trash?
I'd be so pissed as a teacher.
Yeah, the teacher would be pissed to hear that.
That's pretty ballsy to say!
Dialects #3 !
KITTY-CORNER.
I can't even hear what you said.
I have no idea, how do you even spell that.
Kitties... in a corner?
Like, I'm imagining some random room with cats in a corner.
It's not about the cats, its about the corner.
It refers to a direction.
Like, the Starbucks kitty-corner to the supermarket.
Diagonal corner?
Yeah, that's it!
I have no idea why though.
Most people would just say "opposite corner"
It's the diagonal, opposite corner in an intersection.
That's what we say....
OK, Slang #3.
is "Member".
I'm not sure if its OK to talk about this on your channel.
Is it like... a Mens Bar?
Nope, but good guess.
"Member" isn't a bad word per se,
but it's a REALLY hot slang right now.
Because of one of Japan's most famous pop icons,
he kind of got himself into a huge scandal.
an issue of sexual harrassment.
Normally, if someone's arrested then he'd be referred to as a "SUSPECT" in the news.
but since he was never arrested
they just called him that band "MEMBER" on the news.
But like, that's so weird to use the English word "MEMBER"
so now like, if you're joking around with your friend Yamada-san
"You're yamada-MEMBER"
or if he's Nakamura, you'd say " hey, Nakamura-MEMBER"
So many people are saying this.
Like... as sarcasm though right? Yeah!
Like, if you go into a bar
"Let me try and get that girls number."
"Nah dude, don't act like that MEMBER"
Oh, like calling him out?
Yeah, basically.
To say, "don't hit on her."
Reminding them to "Be careful!"
This is a big buzz word right now.
A WALK IN THE PARK
To walk in the park....
spirits are high?
So like... I'm happy?
Close! But like, imagine, you have to give a speech in English.
You'd be nervous right?
Like Loretta, what do I do? Can I do it?
It's a walk in the park!
Like chill out, you got this!
Piece of cake?
Yeah! A Piece of cake!
I'll give you the point!
NOICE!
How nice...
Slang #2!
#2 is FLORIDA
FLORIDA? LIke... Flo Rida?
No, not FLo Rida.
This is a hot word with young people.
It's used only in text though.
What's FLO? L:...Flow?
No! It's not English!
Furo?.... A Bath?
Yeah!!
"rida" is an abbreviation.
"I'm going to go shower now?"
Correct!
"Rida" is "ridatsu", to separate
or to go away.
That's like AFK in English.
AFK. Away from Keyboard.
11 points! The special guest wins!!
Congrats, you win!
I thought so harddd.
I
How do you say sore loser?
Make-inu.
