7月18日(水)～25日(水)に新作公演顔!!!」が下北沢・駅前劇場で上演される

同劇団は、2013年に旗揚げし、作が第九回公演

新作公演は「顔」をテーマに、男女の価値観違いを描き出す

今回は、劇中音楽として、R-1グランプリテーマに「ロックンロールキャバレー」が使されるなど、話題のエンタメ系ブラスロックンド「カルメラ」の西崎ゴウシが参加

女性特有の視点でコンプレックスを描く「艶ポリス」作品に新たな彩りが加わる

本公演の脚本・演出を務め、自らも演する岸本鮎佳は、7月スタートのドラマ「康で文化的な最低限度の生活」(関西テレビフジテレビ系)で本編脚本と、放映直後に配されるチェインストーリーの脚本を手掛けてる

注目度が急上昇中の脚本家・岸本に新作公演見どころを聞いた

"人があえて口に出さないけど、心ので感じている面白さ"を魅せる ―― めて簡単に自己紹介と、劇団の紹介をお願います！「艶∞ポリス(つやぽりす) という劇団の主宰で、脚本、演出をしている本鮎佳です

「艶∞ポリス」という劇団は、"人あえて口に出さないけど、心の底で感じてい面白さ"を、会話劇で魅せる作風が特徴だとってます

――今公演を作り上げていく中で一苦労した瞬間は？今回一番悩んだの "舞台となる場所、設定"です

お寺、空港、葬儀斎場、アパレル、パ地下、学校…など、今までいろんな設定でって来ました

いつも自分がワクワクするような場所がいい思ってるのですが、もう結構やっちゃったの (笑)、なかなか思い浮かばず苦戦しました

執筆に関しては、テーマが難しいだに、しっかりプロットを作り込まないといけいので、プロットにとにかく時間がかかりまた

苦労しながらも強く生きる女性の姿を現 ――今回の舞台に、キャッチフレズをつけるなら？『絶対に目をそらてはならない女の生きざま』です

「男尊女卑」という言葉があると思ますが、そんな昔の言葉で表現できないほど今の社会において男と女の関係は複雑で、特なルールがあるように感じます

今の世の中、たくさんの女性が活躍ているけど、そこに至るまでの苦労はたぶん性とは違って、どうしても「女」というフィターがかかってしまっていると思うんです

彼女たちはそれを分かってるし「仕ないことだ」と流すしかない

女性なら誰でも経験したことある、"あの想 "を抱えながら生きていく強い女を描いてま

キャラクターのリアルな描写がカギ ――脚本を執筆する際に、特に意識してることは？ "キャラクター"ですね

今回は初めましての方が多かったの、稽古が始まる前にワークショップのようなのをやって、役者さんそれぞれのキャラクタを見定めました

その人の性格、癖、芝居の仕方…なを見て、その人の面白いところを引き出してげることで、芝居がよりリアルになるんです

だから、とにかくキャラクターの描写はかな細かいです

本編には描かれてないバックボーン、役者さんに役柄表を渡して細かく役作りしもらいます

キャラクターさえ決まれば、それだけで「面くなることは確実だ」と思っているくらい、にかくキャラクターには時間をかけています

――実際に、男女それぞれの「顔」の意識の違いをどう表現したのでしょうか

それは…ぜひ作品を観てください！観劇後に訪れるのは「怖さ」と「爽快感 !? ――そうですね(笑)、どう描分けているのか楽しみです

観劇したあとはどんな気持ちになる作品です？「ゾッとする喜劇」と言っているよに、観終わったあと、「怖！　でも、スッキしたぁー!!」って思ってもらえたら、うれいですね

Il carattere artigianale dei video, specie se confrontati con i laccatissimi film prodotti nella "Porn Valley" (la San Fernando Valley, una zona collinare vicino a Los Angeles dove ha sede l'industria del porno) lungi dal costituire una problema rappresentava invece la principale ragione del suo successo

«La gente nel porno vuole vedere passione, che è proprio quello che spesso manca nelle produzioni delle majors

Mi è capitato di avere rapporti con attori che non mi trovavano attraente, e il risultato era la completa mancanza di autenticità

Con i miei fans accadeva l'esatto contrario: di passione ne avevano fin troppa». Mentre altre attrici presero a copiarle l'idea, dando origine a una nouvelle vague di porno accessibile alla gente comune, il passo successivo, per la Deep, fu trasformarsi in imprenditrice, vendendo direttamente i propri contenuti sulla sua piattaforma online

«Lavorare nel porno è un mestiere estremamente usurante, sia dal punto di vista fisico che personale

Spesso questo lavoro non viene retribuito adeguatamente, nel senso che i profitti che percepisce chi interpreta i video non sono minimamente commisurati al volume di soldi che poi gli stessi video generano

L'intero settore, insomma, si basa su uno squilibrio: vale miliardi di dollari, ma chi sta davanti alla camera viene sistematicamente tagliato fuori dal grosso dei profitti

Per me, quindi, si è trattato di un percorso di emancipazione da logiche vicine allo sfruttamento»

Ma il sogno di Sabrina Deep, la pornostar del popolo, di rendere il mondo del porno "great again" sia per chi ci lavora che per chi lo fruisce, è oggi minacciato dalla cosiddetta "Porn Apocalypse", una tendenza in atto in America che punta a mettere al bando l'intera industria

Una legge approvata lo scorso aprile per contrastare la prostituzione online è stata usata come pretesto dalla popolare piattaforma "Patreon", (che permette a un artista di ricevere regolarmente donazioni economiche dai propri fans) per eliminare tutti i profili di chiunque abbia a che fare con il mondo dell'erotismo

Dopo una protesta virale, alcuni profili bloccati sono stati riattivati ma per Sabrina Deep il problema è molto più profondo

«Il problema principale sono le piattaforme per i pagamenti, a cominciare da Paypal, che da anni blocca e chiude gli account di chiunque abbia a che fare con la pornografia

Non parlo di prostituzione o cose del genere, parlo di video prodotti da adulti consenzienti o di modelle che svolgono performance davanti alla web cam per adulti consenzienti

E quando dico "chiunque" intendo davvero chiunque: un web designer che si trovi a realizzare l'interfaccia di un sito web per adulti, che magari in vita sua non ha neppure sbirciato un video pornografico, non può utilizzare Paypal per farsi pagare: se lo fa viene bannato e i suoi soldi sono congelati

Questo accade in Paesi in cui girare film porno è perfettamente legale, per cui mi chiedo come possa essere consentito a Paypal di operare in questo modo»

Non si tratta, comunque, di una policy aziendale della sola Paypal, e questa per Sabrina non è certo una buona notizia

«Ci sono Visa o Mastercard, per esempio, che ti fanno pagare una commissione molto più alta per transazioni che riguardano contenuti per adulti (American Express, addirittura, non accetta transazioni di questo tipo)

O gli istituti bancari che rifiutano i mutui a chi lavora nel settore e chiudono i conti correnti a porno attrici e porno attori

Siamo ostracizzati da piattaforme come AirBnB, non possiamo partecipare, con donazioni, alle raccolte di fondi a favore di chi è in difficoltà e nemmeno affittare una casa solo per via del nostro lavoro su cui paghiamo regolarmente le tasse

In questo modo, oltre all'umiliazione sociale, lavorare autonomamente diventa impossibile, e si è costretti a tornare sotto l'ombrello delle corporations, che vuol dire tornare a subire un trattamento assai svantaggioso: nel settore delle web cam, per esempio, spesso su 10 dollari guadagnati con il tuo lavoro in tasca te ne rimangono 3,5 su cui poi devi ancora pagare le tasse»

Se quello che accade ai lavoratori del porno accadesse ad un'altra categoria professionale, la situazione non sarebbe tollerata

Se istituti finanziari come Paypal bloccassero gli account di tutti gli avvocati o AirBnB rifiutasse chi lavora nel settore siderurgico, sarebbe una follia e qualcuno interverrebbe

Ma siccome accade a chi lavora, a qualsiasi titolo, nel porno allora va bene così, nessuno dice niente

L'ipocrisia in atto è gigantesca: i siti web porno sono i più visitati del mondo, eppure quando si tratta di diritti fondamentali di chi lavora nel settore tutti fanno finta di niente, come se con certe cose non avessero nulla a che fare Secondo Sabrina, quella in atto contro di lei e contro tutti i lavoratori della sua industria è, a tutti gli effetti, una forma di discriminazione basata su un particolare tipo di pregiudizio: quello morale

«Se quello che accade ai lavoratori del porno accadesse ad un'altra categoria professionale, la situazione non sarebbe tollerata

Il tema centrale, per Sabrina, è quello della libertà individuale. «Rivendico la libertà di realizzare video per adulti consenzienti e di poterli vendere per mantenermi con il mio lavoro

In generale, rivendico la libertà di chi lavora legalmente nel settore pornografico di avere gli stessi diritti di tutti

Impedirlo, significa limitare la libertà di una persona sulla base di un giudizio morale

Ma questo, a mio parere, vuol dire uscire dal dominio della democrazia occidentale ed entrare in quello delle teocrazie autoritarie, dove sulla base della morale si discriminano le persone

Eppure, questo è esattamente quello che accade oggi a chi lavora nel mio settore»

Intendiamoci: l'ondata di puritanismo che sta fagocitando gli Stati Uniti dallo scorso ottobre, e che recentemente ha vietato alle ragazze di Miss America di esibirsi in bikini, stavolta non c'entra

«L'ipocrisia attorno al porno c'è sempre stata, purtroppo non è un fatto recente

Certo, sul caso Weinstein ho un'opinione un po' controcorrente». Prego. «Le vere vittime di Weinstein sono quelle che dissero di no, perché sono state vittime due volte

La prima volta perché a causa del loro rifiuto sono state discriminate, non hanno girato film e non sono diventate famose

E la seconda volta perché invece di celebrare il loro coraggio e la loro dignità, di indicarle come esempio, le abbiamo dimenticate, al punto che di alcune nemmeno conosciamo i nomi

Al contrario, abbiano celebrato quelle che presero la scorciatoia, dissero "si" al porco e divennero famose

Questa, secondo me, è un'ingiustizia. O meglio, un'altra manifestazione di ipocrisia»

Educators worry students don't know vaping health risks - Duration: 9:03.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Cigarette smoking among youth is at historic lows, but the number of kids

using electronic cigarettes has increased.

The government estimates the number is two million.

Although e-cigarettes deliver nicotine, many teens mistakenly believe there are no serious

health risks.

And since newer devices look like computer thumb drives, it's harder for educators to

detect them.

That's led to worries about e-cigarettes in schools, including the most popular one, Juul.

Special correspondent Kavitha Cardoza, with our partner Education Week, visited a school

in Milford, Connecticut, where the principal is trying to change the behavior.

It's part of our weekly series Making the Grade.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Fran Thompson, the principal of Jonathan Law High School, opens what he

calls his vaping drawer.

FRAN THOMPSON, Principal, Jonathan Law High School: These are some of the items that we

have confiscated this week.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: The items are all e-cigarettes.

The most popular brand by far is called Juul.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: This is a Juul.

I know it looks like a flash drive, right?

So, the liquid goes in here.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Basically, they're devices that heat up a liquid, often nicotine, and

you inhale the vapor.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: And then they smoke it, they vape it.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Kids can hide them anywhere.

ZANE BERKS, Student: Their socks, their backpacks, their pockets, their wallets, their bras,

back pockets, everywhere.

EMMA HUDD, Student: Anywhere, yes, because they're so small.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Students Zane Berks and Emma Hudd say that's part of a Juul's popularity.

EMMA HUDD: It's a lot easier than smoking a cigarette or drinking.

People do it in class all the time.

And kids like that it's sneaky and that they're getting away with it, because it gives you

that, like, rebellion.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: Are you really writing about Christopher Columbus?

I have athletes doing it.

I have honors kids doing it.

There's absolutely no stereotype in terms of the spectrum of who would be doing this.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: That makes this school in Milford, Connecticut, typical.

Juuling, as it's called, has spiked all over the country among youth.

But, unlike alcohol or cigarettes, often, parents aren't even sure what it is.

Parent Liz Goodwin has two teenagers in this school.

She found nicotine liquid pods in their pockets while she was doing laundry.

LIZ GOODWIN, Mother: When I found the pods, I Googled it and looked for it, and I couldn't

find anything.

I just had a photo of it and tried to describe it, and what is this?

And then I saw the amount of nicotine.

It's the equivalent of one pack of cigarettes.

I also understood some of my adult friends used e-cigarettes as a way to get off of smoking,

so I didn't know how dangerous it was.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: I will show you what was going on.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Principal Thompson says his aha moment was in the bathroom.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: So, your typical high school bathroom, right?

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Brings back memories.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: Just like watching "Grease," right?"

But what was happening was you might have five or six kids hanging out in here with

the door closed and vaping.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Teachers said groups of students were gone for more than 20, 25 minutes at

a time.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: I had boys wrestling in the bathrooms.

I had girls setting up little tent cities in the bathrooms, so they could hang out and

then come back totally lost because they missed that instructional time, and really unfocused

because they were buzzed from the vaping.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: It was hard to know for certain, though, because there are no obvious signs.

There's very little smoke and no characteristic cigarette smell.

JONAY GUZMAN, Teacher: You really can't tell.

Like, how do I know it's not a Bath and Body Works perfume that they pray that smells like

mango?

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin Runs the Yale Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science

at Yale University.

She says the flavors are a big part of e-cigarettes' popularity.

They sound playful and harmless, mango, mint, cotton candy, blueberry pie.

SUCHITRA KRISHNAN-SARIN, Yale University: These products come in over 7,000 different

flavors.

And they can also mix and match to create their own, which, again, introduces a sense

of novelty.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: But the vapors inhaled has been found to contain lead, zinc, chromium

and nickel.

And Krishnan-Sarin says nicotine, the main liquid in these devices, is extremely addictive

and can cause memory and attention loss, especially in the developing teenage brain.

SUCHITRA KRISHNAN-SARIN: There's something about nicotine that the teen brain is not

only sensitive, more sensitive to it, but it also leads to greater use of other substances,

like cocaine, marijuana.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Juuls were created as a way to help adult smokers stop smoking.

Krishnan-Sarin says there is not a lot of research available, but e-cigarettes do contain

fewer toxic chemicals than a regular cigarette.

But she says that doesn't mean they are safe for kids.

In fact, a big misconception is most kids think they're inhaling water vapor.

SUCHITRA KRISHNAN-SARIN: No, no, definitely not.

It is not water vapor.

And I think that is a message that needs to be delivered very clearly to youth.

There are chemicals in these e-liquids.

You are vaporizing the chemicals and you are inhaling them.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Principal Thompson felt he couldn't punish students for vaping because

they didn't understand why it was wrong.

So he started educating them.

JANELLE JESSEE, St. Vincent's Medical Center: These are all the chemicals that can be found

in one single cigarette.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Janelle Jessee With St. Vincent's Medical Center has spoken to more than 16,000

students from all over Connecticut this year.

JANELLE JESSEE: I ask the question, raise your hand if you know someone your own age

that smokes cigarettes.

Very rare do I get more than five.

And then I ask the same question, do you know someone your own age that uses a Juul or a

vape?

Almost every single hand goes up from a fifth-grade classroom all the way up to a 12th grade classroom.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Students Morgan Macey and Anthony Mendez say images on social media

spread quickly.

MORGAN MACEY, Student: You see the younger celebrities are holding a Juul in their hand,

and everyone's Snapchat will post videos of them Juuling.

They just find it a way to be cool.

ANTHONY MENDEZ, Student: There's a lot of tricks.

There's like smoke bubbles, kind of like a ring around, and then a bigger ring.

There's different tricks that they do online.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: So, Jessee gives them information and answers questions.

She even has a session for their teachers.

WOMAN: So, where do you put the fluid?

Why do you need power?

I know nothing about this.

MARY MANNION, Teacher: I think not having these Juuls and this industry regulated by

federal and also state officials is outrageous.

SCOTT GOTTLIEB, FDA Commissioner: Yes, I will tell you, straight up, this is one of our

top concerns right now.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Scott Gottlieb is the commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

He says while e-cigarettes can be used by adults to stop smoking, it can't be done at

the expense of children.

SCOTT GOTTLIEB: If all we do is end up hooking a whole generation of young people on nicotine

by making these products available, we won't have done a service from a public health standpoint.

And so we need to be very aggressive in trying to take steps to crack down, prevent the youth

use of these products.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: The FDA is being sued by several organizations that are challenging

Gottlieb's decision to allow e-cigarettes to remain on the market until 2022 without

regulatory review.

Gottlieb says they needed time to set comprehensive standards for all these products, not just

Juul.

SCOTT GOTTLIEB: We also can't be in a position where we're playing Whac-A-Mole, where we're

just going after one particular product and don't have in place rules that address the

overall category.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: The FDA has requested internal research from e-cigarette companies, including

why these products are so popular with kids.

They are conducting a national undercover blitz to stop stores from selling to youth.

And, this fall, the FDA will roll out their first ever comprehensive public health campaign

about e-cigarettes.

NARRATOR: Vaping can deliver nicotine to your brain, reprogramming you to crave more and

more.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: In a statement, Juul says they cannot be more emphatic, no young person

or non-nicotine user should ever try Juul.

The company has pledged $30 million for their own education and prevention efforts.

Despite how proactive this school is about educating students against e-cigarette use,

students say Juuls are still extremely common.

None of these four students say they have vaped, but they don't hesitate.

If I asked you to get me a Juul right now, how long do you think it would it take you?

ZANE BERKS: Three minutes.

MORGAN MACEY: Five minutes or less.

EMMA HUDD: Five minutes or less, yes.

ANTHONY MENDEZ: Don't even know how to get one.

(LAUGHTER)

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Principal Thompson knows this.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: It's always going to be catch-up.

It's always going to be reactionary.

So, you do the best you can, I think.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: But he says its critical to keep educating kids about the risks.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: I consider vaping to be the next health epidemic for teenagers.

And I believe, in my heart, that this is going to have long-term effects, not dissimilar

to smoking and cancer.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: For the "PBS NewsHour" and Education Week, I'm Kavitha Cardoza in Milford,

Connecticut.

JUDY WOODRUFF: And one additional note: In June, voters in San Francisco overwhelmingly

backed a measure to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products, including vaping liquids.

It's considered the strictest in the nation.

In a Twitter thread which has since gone viral, @SamuraiKnitter pointed out that Queen Elizabeth II's choice in brooches during Donald Trump's time in England last week spoke volumes

On the day he arrived in the UK, she donned a beautiful vintage green flower brooch — which happened to be a gift to her from former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle

The American-made accessory was crafted in 1950, and is made from 14-karat yellow gold, diamonds, and moss agate

The Twitter user, called Julie in her bio, also noted that the Queen deliberately chose the most "sentimental" piece in her collection — a personal present from the Obamas, not one of the many state gifts she's been given by the US over the years

On the President's last day in the UK, she debuted the Sapphire Jubilee Brooch — given to her just last year as a special gift from Canada — in what some have speculated was a show of support for the nation and its leader Justin Trudeau, who has suffered constant criticism from Mr Trump

But that wasn't the only potential shade thrown at the Trumps. In another thread, Julie pointed out that the brooch may actually have been just the tip of the iceberg

いつも自分がワクワクするような場所がいい思ってるのですが、もう結構やっちゃったの (笑)、なかなか思い浮かばず苦戦しました

執筆に関しては、テーマが難しいだに、しっかりプロットを作り込まないといけいので、プロットにとにかく時間がかかりまた

苦労しながらも強く生きる女性の姿を現 ――今回の舞台に、キャッチフレズをつけるなら？『絶対に目をそらてはならない女の生きざま』です

彼女たちはそれを分かってるし「仕ないことだ」と流すしかない

女性なら誰でも経験したことある、"あの想 "を抱えながら生きていく強い女を描いてま

キャラクターのリアルな描写がカギ ――脚本を執筆する際に、特に意識してることは？ "キャラクター"ですね

今回は初めましての方が多かったの、稽古が始まる前にワークショップのようなのをやって、役者さんそれぞれのキャラクタを見定めました

その人の性格、癖、芝居の仕方…なを見て、その人の面白いところを引き出してげることで、芝居がよりリアルになるんです

だから、とにかくキャラクターの描写はかな細かいです

本編には描かれてないバックボーン、役者さんに役柄表を渡して細かく役作りしもらいます

キャラクターさえ決まれば、それだけで「面くなることは確実だ」と思っているくらい、にかくキャラクターには時間をかけています

――実際に、男女それぞれの「顔」の意識の違いをどう表現したのでしょうか

Educators worry students don't know vaping health risks - Duration: 9:03.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Cigarette smoking among youth is at historic lows, but the number of kids

using electronic cigarettes has increased.

The government estimates the number is two million.

Although e-cigarettes deliver nicotine, many teens mistakenly believe there are no serious

health risks.

And since newer devices look like computer thumb drives, it's harder for educators to

detect them.

That's led to worries about e-cigarettes in schools, including the most popular one, Juul.

Special correspondent Kavitha Cardoza, with our partner Education Week, visited a school

in Milford, Connecticut, where the principal is trying to change the behavior.

It's part of our weekly series Making the Grade.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Fran Thompson, the principal of Jonathan Law High School, opens what he

calls his vaping drawer.

FRAN THOMPSON, Principal, Jonathan Law High School: These are some of the items that we

have confiscated this week.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: The items are all e-cigarettes.

The most popular brand by far is called Juul.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: This is a Juul.

I know it looks like a flash drive, right?

So, the liquid goes in here.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Basically, they're devices that heat up a liquid, often nicotine, and

you inhale the vapor.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: And then they smoke it, they vape it.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Kids can hide them anywhere.

ZANE BERKS, Student: Their socks, their backpacks, their pockets, their wallets, their bras,

back pockets, everywhere.

EMMA HUDD, Student: Anywhere, yes, because they're so small.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Students Zane Berks and Emma Hudd say that's part of a Juul's popularity.

EMMA HUDD: It's a lot easier than smoking a cigarette or drinking.

People do it in class all the time.

And kids like that it's sneaky and that they're getting away with it, because it gives you

that, like, rebellion.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: Are you really writing about Christopher Columbus?

I have athletes doing it.

I have honors kids doing it.

There's absolutely no stereotype in terms of the spectrum of who would be doing this.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: That makes this school in Milford, Connecticut, typical.

Juuling, as it's called, has spiked all over the country among youth.

But, unlike alcohol or cigarettes, often, parents aren't even sure what it is.

Parent Liz Goodwin has two teenagers in this school.

She found nicotine liquid pods in their pockets while she was doing laundry.

LIZ GOODWIN, Mother: When I found the pods, I Googled it and looked for it, and I couldn't

find anything.

I just had a photo of it and tried to describe it, and what is this?

And then I saw the amount of nicotine.

It's the equivalent of one pack of cigarettes.

I also understood some of my adult friends used e-cigarettes as a way to get off of smoking,

so I didn't know how dangerous it was.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: I will show you what was going on.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Principal Thompson says his aha moment was in the bathroom.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: So, your typical high school bathroom, right?

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Brings back memories.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: Just like watching "Grease," right?"

But what was happening was you might have five or six kids hanging out in here with

the door closed and vaping.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Teachers said groups of students were gone for more than 20, 25 minutes at

a time.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: I had boys wrestling in the bathrooms.

I had girls setting up little tent cities in the bathrooms, so they could hang out and

then come back totally lost because they missed that instructional time, and really unfocused

because they were buzzed from the vaping.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: It was hard to know for certain, though, because there are no obvious signs.

There's very little smoke and no characteristic cigarette smell.

JONAY GUZMAN, Teacher: You really can't tell.

Like, how do I know it's not a Bath and Body Works perfume that they pray that smells like

mango?

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin Runs the Yale Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science

at Yale University.

She says the flavors are a big part of e-cigarettes' popularity.

They sound playful and harmless, mango, mint, cotton candy, blueberry pie.

SUCHITRA KRISHNAN-SARIN, Yale University: These products come in over 7,000 different

flavors.

And they can also mix and match to create their own, which, again, introduces a sense

of novelty.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: But the vapors inhaled has been found to contain lead, zinc, chromium

and nickel.

And Krishnan-Sarin says nicotine, the main liquid in these devices, is extremely addictive

and can cause memory and attention loss, especially in the developing teenage brain.

SUCHITRA KRISHNAN-SARIN: There's something about nicotine that the teen brain is not

only sensitive, more sensitive to it, but it also leads to greater use of other substances,

like cocaine, marijuana.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Juuls were created as a way to help adult smokers stop smoking.

Krishnan-Sarin says there is not a lot of research available, but e-cigarettes do contain

fewer toxic chemicals than a regular cigarette.

But she says that doesn't mean they are safe for kids.

In fact, a big misconception is most kids think they're inhaling water vapor.

SUCHITRA KRISHNAN-SARIN: No, no, definitely not.

It is not water vapor.

And I think that is a message that needs to be delivered very clearly to youth.

There are chemicals in these e-liquids.

You are vaporizing the chemicals and you are inhaling them.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Principal Thompson felt he couldn't punish students for vaping because

they didn't understand why it was wrong.

So he started educating them.

JANELLE JESSEE, St. Vincent's Medical Center: These are all the chemicals that can be found

in one single cigarette.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Janelle Jessee With St. Vincent's Medical Center has spoken to more than 16,000

students from all over Connecticut this year.

JANELLE JESSEE: I ask the question, raise your hand if you know someone your own age

that smokes cigarettes.

Very rare do I get more than five.

And then I ask the same question, do you know someone your own age that uses a Juul or a

vape?

Almost every single hand goes up from a fifth-grade classroom all the way up to a 12th grade classroom.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Students Morgan Macey and Anthony Mendez say images on social media

spread quickly.

MORGAN MACEY, Student: You see the younger celebrities are holding a Juul in their hand,

and everyone's Snapchat will post videos of them Juuling.

They just find it a way to be cool.

ANTHONY MENDEZ, Student: There's a lot of tricks.

There's like smoke bubbles, kind of like a ring around, and then a bigger ring.

There's different tricks that they do online.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: So, Jessee gives them information and answers questions.

She even has a session for their teachers.

WOMAN: So, where do you put the fluid?

Why do you need power?

I know nothing about this.

MARY MANNION, Teacher: I think not having these Juuls and this industry regulated by

federal and also state officials is outrageous.

SCOTT GOTTLIEB, FDA Commissioner: Yes, I will tell you, straight up, this is one of our

top concerns right now.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Scott Gottlieb is the commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

He says while e-cigarettes can be used by adults to stop smoking, it can't be done at

the expense of children.

SCOTT GOTTLIEB: If all we do is end up hooking a whole generation of young people on nicotine

by making these products available, we won't have done a service from a public health standpoint.

And so we need to be very aggressive in trying to take steps to crack down, prevent the youth

use of these products.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: The FDA is being sued by several organizations that are challenging

Gottlieb's decision to allow e-cigarettes to remain on the market until 2022 without

regulatory review.

Gottlieb says they needed time to set comprehensive standards for all these products, not just

Juul.

SCOTT GOTTLIEB: We also can't be in a position where we're playing Whac-A-Mole, where we're

just going after one particular product and don't have in place rules that address the

overall category.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: The FDA has requested internal research from e-cigarette companies, including

why these products are so popular with kids.

They are conducting a national undercover blitz to stop stores from selling to youth.

And, this fall, the FDA will roll out their first ever comprehensive public health campaign

about e-cigarettes.

NARRATOR: Vaping can deliver nicotine to your brain, reprogramming you to crave more and

more.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: In a statement, Juul says they cannot be more emphatic, no young person

or non-nicotine user should ever try Juul.

The company has pledged $30 million for their own education and prevention efforts.

Despite how proactive this school is about educating students against e-cigarette use,

students say Juuls are still extremely common.

None of these four students say they have vaped, but they don't hesitate.

If I asked you to get me a Juul right now, how long do you think it would it take you?

ZANE BERKS: Three minutes.

MORGAN MACEY: Five minutes or less.

EMMA HUDD: Five minutes or less, yes.

ANTHONY MENDEZ: Don't even know how to get one.

(LAUGHTER)

KAVITHA CARDOZA: Principal Thompson knows this.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: It's always going to be catch-up.

It's always going to be reactionary.

So, you do the best you can, I think.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: But he says its critical to keep educating kids about the risks.

FRANCIS THOMPSON: I consider vaping to be the next health epidemic for teenagers.

And I believe, in my heart, that this is going to have long-term effects, not dissimilar

to smoking and cancer.

KAVITHA CARDOZA: For the "PBS NewsHour" and Education Week, I'm Kavitha Cardoza in Milford,

JUDY WOODRUFF: And one additional note: In June, voters in San Francisco overwhelmingly

backed a measure to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products, including vaping liquids.

It's considered the strictest in the nation.

No, #metoo Isn't Making Dating Harder - Duration: 5:43.

The #metoo movement has been trending for quite a while, and honestly, I couldn't be

happier about it.

As a survivor of sexual violence who's experienced assault and coercion in the work place, I'm

thrilled that a social movement like #metoo is working to change a culture where victims

of sexual violence are silenced by their influential attackers.

But some people... and by some people, I mean men, are worried that the metoo movement has

made it harder for them to date.

Recently Henry Cavill came out and echoed that concern in an interview he did with GQ

Australia.

He said: "There's something wonderful about a man

chasing a woman.

There's a traditional approach to that, which is nice.

I think a woman should be wooed and chased, but maybe I'm old-fashioned for thinking

that.

It's very difficult to do that if there are certain rules in place.

Because then it's like: 'Well, I don't want to go up and talk to her, because I'm

going to be called a rapist or something'

Now?

Now you really can't pursue someone further than, 'No'.

It's like, 'OK, cool'.

But then there's the, 'Oh why'd you give up?'

And it's like, 'Well, because I didn't want to go to jail?'"

Cavill is echoing the concerns some men have felt after their idols have been revealed

as sexual predators, and subsequently lost their careers.

That one day, they'll be in that exact position, and lose everything all for a "simple misunderstanding".

But when we talk about the men who have been crucified during the metoo movement, we're

not really talking about simple misunderstandings.

We're talking about, well, clear violations,

Harvey Weinstein has ADMITTED to offering young actresses roles in exchange for sex,

and sexually harassing the women that have worked for him.

There's picture evidence of Al Franken groping a coworker while she sleeps ,and 8 women have

come forward detailing their experiences with him sexually harassing them

Congressman Blake Farenthold cornered one of his aids and told her that he had wet dreams

and sexual fantasies about her.

And there's records of him using tax payer money to settle her harassment case out of

court.

Chef Mario Batali told a woman that if she worked for him, she'd make twice the amount

she's currently making ,and then groped her breasts.

If you're a man and you heard any of these examples and said "wow, I would never do that!",

well, we're not talking about you.

We're not talking about you asking someone out for a cup of coffee or to a movie.

We're talking about clear situations where men in power have used their power to assault

women and keep them quiet.

Whenever we have these conversations, I'm reminded that "good men" exist and that we

shouldn't put all men into one category.

Which isn't what we were doing, of course.

We're talking about a very specific type of man who commits sexual violence and thinks

he can get away with it.

BUt what I don't get is why so many, supposedly "good men" fear that they'll ever be in a

scenario where they could end up like any of the men I've mentioned.

But then I realized.

Many men are socialized to approach women in a way where they don't quite get their

consent, and that's labeled as a tradition of "chasing a woman".

It's romantic to not quite get a yes from a woman.

To corner her and pressure her until she agrees.

To grab her and kiss her.

And that notion is driven by this idea of women, not as autonomous beings, but as prizes

to be won.

Accomplishments to brag about.

Women as conquests, not partners.

And of course some of Henry Cavil's fear comes from the fear of being rejected.

The fear of a woman saying no or "leave me alone" or "I'm sorry, I'm just not interested"

and how, when a man continues to pursue her, that could be interpreted as creepy or weird.

But how about this: start respecting a woman's choice and her ability to say no and mean

it and you probably won't have to worry about that.

Tarana Burke started the #MeToo movement over a decade ago to be a source of mutual support

and solidarity between, specifically, black and brown survivors of sexual violence.

What started as a workshop in Tuskeggee, Alabama has morphed into a widespread movement that,

while its focus has shifted, has always been about empowering those who have experienced

sexual violence to have a voice, to be heard and believed.

And that's important because often when you experience sexual violence, you deal with

people doubting you and suggesting that you're accusing someone for your own personal gain.

The metoo movement, has been amazing for survivors not only because it allows them to voice their

experiences and to be heard, but it also helps survivors know that they are not alone.

That is what the movement is about, and one of its many goals is changing the culture

in which these men feel comfortable assaulting these women and getting away with it.

In my opinion the men that feel like the metoo movement has made it harder for them to date

are paranoid and are making themselves seem guilty by comparing themselves to men who

have committed sexual violence.

"Good men" don't get nervous when we call to end the culture of sexual violence in the

work place and everywhere else.

They support the women that have stepped forward and said #metoo, and they hold other men accountable

for abusing women.

In my opinion, men can still make the first move and they can still pursue women.

There are a lot of"Good men" who still manage to do so and not be accused of assault; and

I think it says a lot about a man that he can't envision a way of dating without the

possibility of coercing someone into a situation where they might accuse them of assault.

As human beings, we should have social relationships with others.

so that interaction with others will not be disturbed even if they're in a bad mood.

The Importance of Maintenance Schedules - Duration: 6:54.

thanks again for joining me on another episode of sealed for good today I'm

going to talk about maintenance schedules and this is one that many

customers but at both ends of the spectrum the Builder client or the asset

owner and the applicator forget to do is including a maintenance schedule into

the actual scope of works and it doesn't revolve around every application so if

things like bathrooms and what areas normally once they are covered the one

of the wonders of those is you're protecting those products and systems

during the application of construction then once they're covered with screens

or tile bears they're relatively safe from being damaged however applications

like roofing where you've got an expose membrane water tanks is another one even

planner boxes to a certain extent in critical areas you should include a

maintenance schedule no use the roof pond as an example because I've been

involved in many of these projects over the years

and what happens is great works done with the waterproofing right systems are

specified and I'm talking about any system there doesn't either be just the

grips or system you can have a system that's very very very highly durable it

could be sheet or liquid or a spraying system with a range of different

technologies but the fact is when it's exposed to the elements or exposed to

the area where you've got all sorts of traffic on top of it damage could happen

to the membrane and the problem is a lot of people died the tech the damage and

the acid owner becomes a larger this because then the leg springs ends and

then there are problems on site and things have to be fixed so if you

actually include a maintenance schedule in your scope of work for the warranty

so for example grip set as a manufacturer we would give various

warranties for roof projects it could be 10 15 years sometimes have been 20 year

systems what happens is we would then recommend to a quite the contractor the

applicator that depending on what the demands are of that roof they should go

and inspect it every three or five years or seven years depending on what's there

and you build that into your price so then you may have a price that you

quote for the work you're doing today and then you factor in that for the life

of the warranty there is a maintenance inspection that's carried out and your

time needs to be paid for that I get that and then that could be an hour

depending on the size of the project it could be three years it could be a half

a day or a day you need to work with your client on that now these sorts of

projects on large roofs potentially with is plant and equipment another traffic

the client needs understand that that is the exposed envelope of the building

that's it's there underneath that roof membrane is the substrate where if water

gets through there are a lot of issues so the costs for the wife the building

to have someone come out and spec and maintain the warranty is smart money

being spent and it's wise and you need to be paid for it and you need to factor

that in and you put that in your agreement and so you have any calendar

eyes it order eyes it that you would actually preempt the inspection you go

out there you visit that and you check all the critical points things like

drains things like expansion joints where there's a lot of traffic potential

chemical spillages where there's ten things like ladders and access points

but there's a lot of wear and tear and obviously it doesn't really matter what

membrane system you've used I know they love it some of you have they're going

to go when one membranes that tough nothing will break it let me tell you it

I've seen the best of them out there globally and I see this down variable on

the Asian countries like in Hong Kong and Korea and China some large

commercial projects and even then you still need to inspect these roofing

systems so factor it in and also by initiating that that the quoting stage

of your works it actually gives you client an understanding that you might

be different than the cowboy weather it's actually undercut you your quote

because they need to understand that it's all well and good that the

membranes being laid then you pay for that in there what's going to happen in

five years time and getting on top of things like we all know prevention is

better than cure sort that through explain that their

client and you'll find that you actually will your reputation will be listed and

you money on that because you've then tied

your client into future work on that one and there might be other projects of

their asset owners with our utilize the same sort of system knowing that they've

got that piece of a line that you're involved the other thing is if you're

using our system grip set we documented as well and we'll know about it and so

will actually preempt it with you and work with you on those inspections

because we're gonna want that report based on what you see out there when you

do that inspection now you might go and inspect it and everything's fine but if

there's any works will repairs to be done we can give you a remedial or

repair specification so the integrity of the membrane can remain in for that

period that warranty the original warranty you should in addition to that

when you aren't doing jobs for your clients with roofing jobs give them some

tips and hints on how they can help maintain and this can even be in

domestic drawings but exposed roof applications number one are the drains

at least two or three times a year the drains should be checked because doesn't

matter whether you've got trees or other debris around the the roof you're always

going to have items are going to fall in the roof and if the drive the falls are

to where they meant to be there's going to be an accumulation of things like the

leaves and the twigs or whatever it could be even dead birds were seen

around drains and they can block the water up they block the drain where the

water is flowing through and then what ends up happening is you can't you get

an overflow issue then you've got other issues that are created so ensure that

there are little things you advise your client not wait until his sort of water

coming in from under the eaves where you've got a blocked rain couple times a

year they can go and inspect that before winter before summer and and half the

winter particularly and just ensure they're all cleaned and and free just

like you would maintain the gutter around a normal home roof jobs where

there's a flat roof and this also had comes into effect with things like

pedestal paver projects where clients might be their own personal papers on

the expose decks and podiums they need to understand what those

drainage points are because and they are not visible and identify which of those

players I need to lift at that stage year just ensure there's a clear runway

for the water and they block these are the drains this is all simple stuff but

we forget it and if you actually implement it into your works and the way

you discuss with your client you're going to find that your reputation lives

that's going to live the rest the industry best problems out there and

we're all moving ahead at til next time I'll see how they reserve SIL for good
